Located right on the Soque River. It's in a former mill, with part of the original building still in the basement. All local, handmade pottery creations including vases, mugs, platters, serving dishes, decor, ornaments and jewelry. I bought a cute oil dispenser with a ladybug on it and a bunch of individual stationery cards created by a local artist. Oh, and a rabbit magnet that my toddler just had to have, of course. Very sweet staff that will carefully wrap your purchases. I think they do classes occasionally, but check their website or Facebook page to make sure I didn't make that up. My husband was amused at the huge fish that gather right below the deck. Very close to Helen and the other popular little towns/pockets up there so be sure to stop in next time you're in the area! read more

Drove by and decided to stop & I am so glad that I did. This store was absolutely adorable and is such a hidden gem. This store hosts several local & in house potters as well as artists from all over the country. All of the artwork was incredible and the staff was so nice. The cashier was personable and talked us through the history of both the building and the art. When walking in we were unaware that the building was an old mill. When you walk into the store you can go below and see a small waterfall where there is usually trout. Such a great place to stop by. read more

Very nice pottery studio displaying works by many artists. Physical location is unique and interesting. Old gristmill turned into retail store. Items are a bit north on price but I guess art is expensive... Nice running creek behind the building full of SUPER SIZED TROUT! Fishing is not allowed. Bottom line: Not my cup of tea, but interesting anyway. Worth a day trip if in the area. read more

My favorite pottery place in Georgia. Super cool location in an antique grain mill next to a trout stream with the biggest trout in the state. They sell food for them, or just bring an old loaf of bread. The fish are entertaining. Go downstairs and see the remains of the mills mechanical structure... It's interesting Thre is usually a potter throwing some creation on the wheel in the back. They are interesting to talk with. Rack of the four resident potters has a stamp that they mark their creations with - giving the name "mark of the potter" meaning. I've been buying here for maybe 15 years??? Sorting through my favorite coffee mugs and bowls, I see mostly one mark so I seem to have a favorite potter. It's worth the trip just to see even if you don't want to buy anything. read more

Great place to stop. We go often to feed the fish out back. Its a cool little pottery shop, in an old grain mill. The pottery is very nice, a bit on the pricy side, but still very nice. Seriously though, I go for the views, and to feed the fish. Very pretty. I have taken probably 100 pictures in and around the place. Iv'e only bought two or three things over the years. My second time at this interesting little pottery and craft shop - built in a former grist mill and next to an amazing waterfall and trout estuary. You can feed, but not fish the trout from the rear deck over the waterfall. Feeding the trout are the best part of this experience for me, but my wife always finds something she likes to buy. I recommend it and will stop in again if we are nearby. read more

I love this place. This place has a great selection of pottery from local Georgia and North Carolina artists. You have to go out to the porch and feed the fish. It is very relaxing. My girlfriend and I made the mistake of not getting everything we were looking for at this place instead of waiting to go to Asheville. The prices are cheaper here than at the Folk Art Museum in Asheville or at Arrowcraft in Gatlinburg. I will be coming here again for Christmas gifts. This is just not pottery but art and I believe that it will accrue in value over the years. It is a wonderful place with wonderful people. read more

I've been going to Mark of the Potter annually for over 30+ years. Saw on an Atlanta channel an add and immediately wanted to go. My birthday gift to myself to swing my troubles away on the back porch swing and feed the fish. I feel like a 5 year old all over again. Pure delight and of course I have numerous pieces of pottery over the years. And gifted some as well but you had better be special in my book to get a gift of pottery from here. The fish are huge and no I could not eat a pet. They watch you as much as you watch them. Never had anyone get "rude " in fact I believe they recognize me at this point in time. Was greeted at the door by Welcome Home , last fall. Like going to your granmother's house. Feeling the wood creak under your feet and the smell of the fire in the pot belly stove. My family and I visit the Clarkesville/Allen area 2 to 4 times a year. Normally, one of our hallmarks from this visit is to visit Mark of the Potter. But this week we visited the store and had a very unpleasant experience with a man who worked at the store who I would presume to be a manager or manager. The store has posted that masks are required. My wife, 12-year-old son, and I visited the store and followed that rule. While in the store we had on our masks as requested as well. But my son took a quick mass break while standing with us with our permission. And this man came by and directed my son to put his mask back on. My son was with his parents and had our permission. Instead of talking to me, emailed the need to you what are my son to follow the rule himself. If my son of been alone with the mask down I would expect that. But he was with his parents and the man should have had a conversation with me and not my son. We left the store as soon as the incident occurred. I will be reluctant to visit again. read more

Great location and a fun trip to N. Georgia to see some really nice pottery. However, the owner was grouchy and kind of ruined the trip for my family. He also was unwilling to give any discounts on multiple pieces that I wanted to purchase. There are many other friendlier places in N. Georgia to buy pottery. Since I'm a Chamblee, GA, native circa 1948, I've had a chance to roam around all over metro Atlanta and all points around it. When wife and I feel like taking a relaxing drive, many's the time we've taken backroads to Clarkesville, then out to Mark of the Potter. This is one of the most successful private potteries in the South. It sits adjacent to a picturesque waterfall on the Soque (pronounced sooky) River. The building is 80 years old, and the original waterwheel and wooden gears that used to drive the potter's wheels are still intact. Nowadays they use electric equipment, but it's all still handcrafted pottery. Our kitchen at home is well stocked with ceramic creations from this place. It's very usable art, mostly ovensafe and microwave safe. As for objets d'art, they create unusual original one-off vases and wall art. An interesting diversion here is the millpond overhung by a porch off the rear of the building. The pond is populated by a tribe of ENORMOUS trout, some of which weigh over 20 pounds. Don't get ideas for trout filets, because they are jealously guarded by the owners. It is fun to drop a quarter in an old gumball machine to get a handful of fish food and then watch the whales go into a feeding frenzy when you toss it in. It's a very relaxing spot to watch the water, the fish, and let the gentle roar of the waterfall take your cares down a coupla notches. read more

Been coming here since before it was popular. The pottery selection is some of the best in the mountains. They have a great porch out back with fish food you can use to feed the trout in the stream. They also are good to recommend local coffee shops and restaurants. A little off the beaten path, but well worth the detour. read more
