I know it says "gallery" but this place is a museum too! They also have a bona fide museum of Maynard Dixon and many of his contemporary around the corner of the strip mall. But the gallery is worth a visit in and of itself. The Sublette family will have forgotten more about western art than any of us could ever know! And don't be fooled, western art isn't just Cowboys and cactuses. They have some incredible contemporary art here as well. Don't even get me started on the jewelry cases! And they're extremely kind to help you with any questions you may have. I highly recommend checking out their auctions that they have frequently on their website. You'll find some real treasures at affordable prices. I really believe they can accommodate almost any budget. And Medicine Man has artists come in all the time to do lectures. In the past, I have been an intermittent, regular customer to MMG. Was in yesterday, - Mark's arrogance and rudeness, was at a new high. His employee son, invited us and encouraged us to check out their new store/museum, around the corner from Risky Business. After picking out a saddle blanket, I set it aside, and we walked over to the musuem. Upon entering, it seemed expansive and impressive. As we began to explore, the wannabe cowboy/employee, (probably yet another coddled doctor's son) retorted - "you three need to pay $10.00 per head - to be in here!" I said "no we don't" - and we left! Rude, arrogant and ignorant - not good for a salesperson! Especially, when we were going to buy an $865.00 Saddle Blanket, after the tour, of a museum (that we were invited to go by the owner 's son) that should be free. What a joke! A true example of our service industry today. Weak and unacceptable! I can easily afford the $30.00 admission - just unimpressed by the amount, and the rudeness. We looked at a Indian pot on eBay for 6 mos. We called to see if was still available,they said yes. We drove 2 days from California ,looked at the pot ,he made us an offer about 3pm .We said we would sleep on it. Decided to buy it that night ,call at 9 am. Mark would not pick up our call, finally he texted and said the pot was sold, could not talk because he was golfing. We drove another 2 days home. Hard to believe the pot sold between 3 and 5. My husband and I came in today, we are visiting Tucson from out of town, and I'd heard about the Medicine Man Gallery and followed Dr. Sublette on social media for a while because of my interest in SouthWestern art. We are not connoisseurs, nor do we have an infinite budget, however I really wanted to visit because of the amazing knowledge that I've learned from listening to Dr. Sublette's you tube channel. We were so pleasantly surprised to find that the atmosphere in the gallery was so hospitable and friendly. Everyone we spoke to, especially Karen, was so kind from the very start. This doesn't feel like the average art gallery, it's part museum, part cultural experience. The collection is astounding and there are works of art for most budgets. It was truly a pleasure and I would highly recommend visiting the Medicine Man Gallery if you're in Tucson even if you don't think art is your thing. Maynard Dixon and I are kindred art-spirits. He sees the West the way I see it, except he was able to articulate it better than I ever could. I am still trying. So, until then, I go to Medicine Man Gallery and admire the master and pretend that one day I may even be able to articulate similarly, or otherwise be able purchase one of his pieces. I just don't feel like taking a second mortgage on my home right now. The economy is lousy. I hadn't been down to the Basha's Shopping Center on Sunrise in years even though it is relatively close by. I was checking out Tuesday Morning when I found this wonderful Art Gallery/Museum. The art work was amazing and was filled with Western Art, Contemporary Western Art, Rugs, etc. The prices were amazingly high because the quality is that of a museum I was so taken aback from the talent that covers their walls. If you are into Navajo rugs, serapes and Jewelry you will be in heaven. The best part was the Maynard Dixon Museum which is housed right on it's premises. That alone was a treat to see, old letters from the early 1900's from Dixon. Plus of course, all his amazing art work. Some of the paintings were upwards of $100,000 dollars. Others were from about $3,000 to $8,000. Some more or less. It is worthwhile to just enjoy yourself and relish the beauty of the Gallery. read more
