My "half" sandwich had 2 halves and the quality of the meat was excellent. I also got a large container of soup and a big bag of homemade potato chips. I also drank a classic pumpkin spice latte from Starbucks. My companion got 2 slices of pizza. He liked them. There are lots of options to choose from when everyone in the group wants different things. Market bistros fish fry is beyond good. Really anything you order is good there but today, I decided to try the shrimp tacos. Omg these were delicious. A sure burst of flavors with purple cabbage, pico de gallo, avocado with a remoulade sauce and lightly breaded shrimp. It's just a light meal. It was perfect for dinner. The price is right too. I've been kinda critical of most of the Albany area shopping center grocery stores. This is only because I spent over 20 years in Texas enjoying my favorite ever grocery story chain, HEB, and its high end store, Central Market. So, when I first moved to Albany, I was introduced to Hannaford, only because it was walking distance to the apartment I moved into the weekend I arrived. It was a decent set up on Sand Creek Road, and I liked it. Didn't have everything an HEB Plus or Central Market had, but enough for me and my little apartment. Then, I was introduced to Shop Rite, only because they just opened a brand new one on West Central Avenue, which was really nice. I ended up bouncing between both the Hannaford on Sand Creek Road and ShopRite on West Central Avenue. Fast forward a year later, and I moved to downtown Albany, NY. Don't ask. Anyways, there were Hannafords, Shop Rites, and PriceChoppers much closer to where I lived. I shopped all of them, and I think I rated all of them. They are all decent, but missing what I miss from Texas. Fast forward a year after that, and someone from work told me about the amazing Market 32 in Latham, that should have been named Market 32 PLUS like HEB did with their upscale supermarkets. I went there and I was hooked. It was almost nearly similar to an HEB Plus. Not just in all the produce and products they had available, but also in the service. Now, it is about a 10 minute - 15 minute drive, versus a couple minutes for the others. But the nice thing is that if I need to shop for EVERYTHING, I can find it here. I don't need to take a side stop to Whole Paycheck or Dishonest Weight CoOp. This place has it all, and I love it until the next late and great super shopping center in the area. read more

I stopped in to get a pound of cranberry chicken salad. There was no prepackaged in the case so I had to join the queue at the deli counter. My number was 79 and they were currently serving number 74. I wanted to go and do some other shopping, but was afraid I would be absent when they called my number. It took over 20 minutes for my number to be called. How hard would it be to have an app that shows a listing of the numbers waiting to be called and showing the number being currently served? Then, you could do your other shopping and get back to the deli when they are ready to serve your number. read more

Five stars awarded for Lobster Rolls from the Seafood Station. Ate on site at a private booth in the dining area of the food court. The two Lobsters Rolls I ordered for my daughter and me were filled with succulent fresh lobster pieces. There was so much lobster, forks were used to eat some lobster before roll could be bitten into easily. The roll was lightly buttered and toasted nicely. The wait was less than 10 minutes. Very generous portion of premium LOBSTER for only $19.99! Small side of tasty cole slaw was served with the roll. Could have had bag of chips instead. I ordered a breakfast burger and fries. Good old fashioned all American Lunch. It was great, with the fried egg on top of brioche bun. I loved it. The patty used are frozen ones, and you do get those white hard cartilage pieces in your bites as well. You can tell them to make it well done. Convenience and quality. At this point I have given up on this establishment food court . Over the years it has become fill with employees that don't care about the cleanliness or preparation of the food stations . The management team and standards are out the window . They don't care what a customer would like and how they want their food prepare and package. As a person that has been in hospitality and customer service industry his whole life this was one of the places in the capital region chain of supermarkets that I would visit because of the food,service and ambiance . I told my family over the weekend this is the last time we buy anything from the food court area including deli section and bakery section . If a food inspector in the area would regularly visit this establishment and had any morals or ethics the company would have to fired 90 percent of the staff . read more

After hearing about Market Bistro's award winning lobster roll, I knew I had to give it a shot. I ventured towards Back Bay Fish Fry which is the place that serves the lobster roll located in Market Bistro. I scanned the menu and I spotted the lobster roll with kettle chips for $20. Subsequent, I placed my order and waited for this "award winning" lobster roll. Finally, it was ready and so was I. I bit into the lobster roll and I immediately recognized the freshness of the lobster, but there were some problems. In light of this, the roll was a bit soggy and the roll tasted cheap. In similar fashion, there were some pieces of shell still on the lobster which upset me very much. On the flip side, the lobster itself was incredibly fresh and tender. Plus, the butter helped make the lobster melt in right your mouth. With this said, it was a good lobster roll, but I definitely had better. This store keeps changing it's name, but to me it will always be Price Chopper! This used to be located at the other end of the strip mall years ago. I will freely admit, this store is a bit pricier than the Hannaford that is across the street. I've lived all over the USA in much larger cities than Albany and I'm still impressed by all of the amenities this store has. The food court is really neat and offers a lot of diverse options. I like that there is also some seating in the middle of the store. The bakery had some really nice looking items that didn't look like what you would typically find at a grocery store. The produce section is also quite great and fresh looking. The only place I can really compare this store to is the Flagship Wegman's in one of Rochester's suburbs. I don't come here on a regular basis, but during the short time I was home I visited a few times. The shelves seemed well stocked. I can only address the floral department. The pre-made arrangements are beautiful and reasonable. They also sell So many different bundles and types abs colors of flowers that anyone can throw a quick arrangement together and it will be beautiful! If you are looking for flowers, this a great place, whether you are looking to buy flowers to do it yourself or have them make an arrangement for you or grab a pre-made arrangement quickly! The nicest thing about Market Bistro in the Latham Price Chopper is that it offers a different environment. It's not a Wegman's, it's not a Fresh Market, it's not a Hannaford nor is it a Shop Rite nor a Seven Eleven. Maybe I'll tire of it a year or five from now, but right now, it offers me an alternative I didn't have before. I like that. I also like the Growler filling station where I can buy a quart of Ubu ($4.99 without a coupon) for less than the price of a pint at most pubs. I also like the Triple Decker Sandwiches from Ben & Bill's Deli. Two of the sandwiches on their menu are the same as what the old Joe's Deli offered on Madison Avenue in Albany (the Vincentian and the Londoner). But my wife and I decided to share The Special ($9.49) - imported ham, Swiss cheese, roast turkey, lettuce, tomato, and Russian dressing on rye. It was served with a crisp pickle and possibly the crispiest potato chips I've ever had. We're likely to try another of the Triples in the future. Recently, I also picked up a full rack of the smoked ribs at the Market Bistro ($19.99) to bring home. While they were not totally fall-off-the-bone tender, they were tender enough and nicely smoked. What's NOT nice about Market Bistro? The crowds if you have to go during prime shopping time - I usually don't! Another pet peeve, is the short, double-decker shopping carts where the bottom basket protrudes forward more than the upper basket. I'm almost tempted to review each part of this place separately, as my opinion differs on the bistro side versus the grocery side. I get what they're trying to do here, i.e., be "The Wegman's of Albany" in the style of food provided (IMO Wegman's still does it better, and you know Price Chopper doesn't want Wegman's in the area). Still, I can't fault them for what they've done here with all the options. And they continue to do well the things I've liked about some of their other stores, such as their seafood department, their bagels, etc. Actually, all the different "food court type stations" more closely resemble what newer Market Baskets are doing in New England. I think I checked them all out, but I can't recall if I saw any places with decent options for cooked vegetables or a salad bar. But no matter about the salad bar; if I'm in the area and want a salad, I'll drive 1 mile south to Crisp. I was not as excited about the grocery side, i.e., "more of the same." The prices were typical. There's always a few good deals and a few loss leaders, but if you comparison shop, you'll find better deals on many products in other nearby grocery stores (or department stores now featuring grocery sections) within 5 miles. It also felt like certain departments were deliberately smaller than usual. It took me a long time to find the bread department, for example, and it would up being 1/4 of an aisle... perhaps the inventory is reduced to incite you to buy more of the specialty items in the bakery area? If you're okay with what's offered and at the prices offered, you'll like it. This can certainly be a good place for "get groceries and something for tonight's dinner" place to shop. If you're here primarily for grocery shopping, and you comparison shop, maybe not so much. read more

This was the coolest Price Chopper that I've ever seen. The food court area rivaled an upper end mall food court. Lots and lots of choices with freshly cooked food. I had already eaten otherwise some of the places would have tempted me. The food selection is fantastic too. Lots of items I haven't seen anywhere else. Prices were a bit high but I think you're getting quality that you don't get at all grocery stores so it's expected. It was busy when I was there on a Friday afternoon but never felt overly crowded. We are in quarantine and just wanted a couple of sandwiches from Ben and Bill's. Julie answered and initially said they do not don't do curbside service. However she kindly checked further and arranged curbside I know this was out of the norm for that department but she so very pleasantly made the arrangements. She said it would take 20 minutes because they were busy ( admittedly it was noon time). Barbara C is easily the worst employee in this store, she was approached politely and at a time where she was waiting on a customer alone at the register and responded with incredible impoliteness and attitude. She was asked where an uncommon food item was located (it turned out to be sold out anyway) and first sighed and ignored me but then turned back around to yell how busy she was (again, she was waiting on a customer who had left the line) and them she basically told me to f-off. Food court meets grocery store!! Even if this were just a grocery store, it would be a damn good grocery store! They have a huge selection of everything. The store is immaculately clean, the bakery serves some of the best baked goods, cases of fresh pasta and sausage, and the cashiers are pretty friendly. However, what makes this even better is that they have a food court inside! Too lazy to cook after doing grocery shopping? Pick up some ready-made dinner! Just got done with a workout and want a snack before getting the week's food essentials? Pick up a salad at salad bar! Whatever the situation, whatever you're hungry for, you are bound to find something to eat right away. While I've only been there once, I did try a few things from a few of the different "stations." Everything was good. From a Pastrami Sandwich to Pizza to Chicken Strips, all more than suitable. read more

So there's Price Chopper, Market 32, and then there's Market Bistro. All owned by the same people. And one fancier than the next. Market Bistro is a really cute place with lots to offer from fresh fruits and veggies to freshly made goods ready to pack and take home! They have pretty much everything you could need from a grocery store and pre-cooked food pick up place. Prices are okay. Not too pricy, but not the cheapest place in town either. Closest thing to a Wegman's in this area. Definitely check it out for any groceries needs you may have! read more

This review is for the subs specifically, but bear with me because I will get to other aspects of Market Bistro shortly. It is a sin to eat a bad sub. That's because it is doing terrible things to your body and if it's not delicious and succulent, you're adding inches to your waistline and taking years off your life for nothing. Unfortunately, the sub I ate at Market Bistro today was not good. There were some hopeful elements. The buns were properly puffy and the lettuce was shredded. But the Italian included regular ham which should have caused me to flee like the wind. And not only was sharp provolone not available, but the server did not know what it was. The result was carelessly assembled with none of the careful latticework which characterizes a good sub and served with "Italian dressing" which was one of those sickly sweet artificially thickened abominations; oil and vinegar was available in a common area if I wanted to go and get it myself; oregano was not mentioned. On a scale where Roma is 5 and Subway is 3, this scores a low 3. But I know there are great things to be had at Market Bistro. For one thing there's Ben and Bill's which is a real kosher deli. For another the smoked meats are spectacular. Unfortunately the sides offered with the smoked meats are starch bombs. The best meal here might be a half pound of brisket or ribs combined with a quarter pound each of cole slaw and potato salad from Ben and Bill's. Also, the salads! Right next to the sub station is the salad station and I could not keep my eyes off an enormous Cobb that was being mixed, I assumed it was to fill a cold bin but in fact it was one serving. That's where I'm headed next time. The Golub folks have said this is an experiment where they'll find out what people like and what they don't. You can help them learn and improve by eating ribs and salads and staying far, far away from the subs. read more

The in and out of an attempt to redesign (reboot? remake?) Price Chopper into a competitor for "high end" grocery stores can be summarized in two words: fish stench. There's basically two components to this stab to go someplace parallel, if not on the same track, as the Wegman's and Whole Foods and maybe Fresh Markets out there, all of which are encroaching into the Capital Region, as we prepare in these parts to enter the 21st century. The parts are what amounts to basically a food court, with burgers/sushi/fish fry/deli sandwich/pizza/substore options, plus an unironically named "sit down" restaurant called the Chef's Grill. The second part is a remade grocery store, with imitation wood floors and better lighting and jazzier bad signage. I hate to rain on the parade here but when you look past the fact the menus are on computer screens this is pretty much just a run of the mill Price Chopper and a run of the mill mall food court. I am very tempted to add a fourth star to the venture for having the two combined into one destination grocery shopping zone -- the kids certainly think they love to come here, but I suspect it's for the whirl-a-gig and the delusion they're going to be able to pick anything they want from the food court, excuse me, bistro -- but that's when we get back to Fish Stench. I sort of like the smell of a large seafood place (think Pike Place market) with its authentic briny, fishy whiff. But I don't like it when I'm sitting down to a non-fish lunch, which is what we got here because of the really poorly-designed seating area for the mall food court (excuse me: bistro dining experience) that is cheek and jowl with the fish counter and right in the downwind area of the store's HVAC system. That is emblematic of the general lack of attention to planning traffic flow and space in this store. The entrances are stuck at ends of the building making ingress and egress difficult without crowds, and a painful exercise with crowds (and every pensioner in the Latham area seems to be coming in here to shop in the morning at present, to add to the traffic delights in both the parking lot and, ouch my aching knees that got hit by shopping carts thrice, in the store). The aisles are mostly the traditional long, rectilinear organization of yore. The produce department has been opened up a bit, but they have made the shopping experience grotesque by requiring circulating in the "bistro" and readymade section for some foods (hummus, deli items, bakery, fish, et alia), with cart in tow if you have one. The checkouts weren't rethought at all, ala Trader Joe's system or the occasional Hannaford's in the area that employees the single-queue for all-registers dispatch method to speed you through checkout. And then they failed to widen the aisles out: you simply cannot pass in many areas of the store, and with the meandering clientele it roughly doubles the amount of shopping time. All of which I would gladly put up with if the quality was higher. But it's not there. There just aren't that many new brands or options here compared to a regular Price Chopper; they crammed an aisle with "natural" items (packaged foods) without as much variety as the shorter similar aisle at Shop Rite, and the organic produce items are partly grouped together in one place and partly spread around without much of a rational scheme, which makes shopping for specific items rather problematic (check here; check there; check back here again, rinse, lather, repeat). They mostly seem to have crammed more volume of the same items on the shelves, without even the benefit of avoiding the constant bumpings of restockers. The food court similar suffers from an attack of tha banals. Premade salads: yellow and white iceberg. Pizza kitchen: chewy cardboard reheat for $2.79 a slice. Deli sandwiches: take forever for $10. Sushi: sits around and tastes more like dead raw fish than it should. I could go on, but with the kids we have now tried literally every counter and I can't say any of them struck me as any different from normal Price Chopper hot food lines, other than the fancy computer menus and new signage. (The hot burger line is new, and a modest exception, but for the same price I can get much better fare at Five Guys or even across the road at Red Robin.) I would almost say "hey, at least it's better than regular Price Chopper" but it's not, because of the aforementioned traffic and flow problems, and of course the need to inhale, while eating your Bistro purchase, if you are lucky enough to find a table in the poorly-designed seating area, Fish Stench. It all feels in the end like the proverbial exercise of putting lipstick on a pig, which I suppose is better than no lipstick if you have to kiss a pig. But I like to think I have other, better options in the barnyard. read more

They have one of the best lobster rolls I've ever had in my entire life. There must be like 27 lobsters in every roll, and it's only $19.99. The first time I got one, I thought maybe the woman making it threw some extra lobster in because it was near the end of the day, but this time I saw the guy weighing it out and I realized, nope, they actually intend to give you a massive pile of sweet, tender, claw-and-knuckle heavy lobster. This new Market Bistro Price Chopper is as close as we are going to get to a Wegman's like experience. Not only is the actual grocery area roomy, clean, and well stocked but the "carry out" food section is very impressive. Nothing like what I think of when I think Price (Ghetto) Chopper. I think because this store isn't officially open because this feed hasn't gotten a lot of reviews yet but I'm looking forward to this place really taking off and setting a bar for other grocery stores around the area. Instant good food without a wait on a Sat. night. PLUS a great selection and interesting enough to please my picky daughter. That alone gets a grocery store 4 stars. We fed 4 people and took some home for $42... not bad. I was happy to see the chicken liver from the Slingerlands deli here and got a half sandwich with egg, bacon, LTO, mustard and mayo on rye. It was very good and came with a crunchy garlic pickle and chips. My wife got a chicken dinner with 3 sides. She liked it and brought much of the heaped up sides home. My daughter got their calamari and fries, their cocktail sauce has a good amount of horseradish and the fresh lemon was good as well. Mixed review. For grocery shopping, I don't favor this store. It's crowded, there's not enough room in the aisles. It's hard to find things, however, you can find just about ANYTHING in this store. If you are looking for speciality items, they probably have it. They have a large assortment of ethnic foods and that can be fun. The produce section is very nice, pricey, but nice. As for the restaurant portion, it's basically an over priced food court. The positive is that if you go with your family, everyone can find something they like. The seating can get congested and sometimes difficult. The prices are a bit high for grocery store food, however the portions are quite generous. The order and checkout is confusing. They've changed it a few times and it's still awkward. The customer service in this part of the store is pretty good. The seafood department in the food court portion is good, the soup is ok. The salad and subs are generously sized and made to order (as is most of the foods there). They serve Perry's ice cream, which is pretty good. The added Starbucks is a plus for me, as I like to have a beverage while I shop. We've eaten at the Chef's grill for breakfast only, twice. It is fair. The menu is good, but the food quality is not. $18 for breakfast for two is a little steep for the quality of the food. I probably wouldn't go back for the Chef's grill. I gotta give this place a 2. The burgers aren't that great (mine was over cooked and dry) and the lobster roll was so-so. For $11 for a burger, fries and a drink I expect a little more and for almost $20 for the lobster roll, I expect a boatload of real lobster meat on there. My biggest gripe with the bistro is the one tiny soda machine that is supposed to service EVERYONE who eats there. Both my trips to eat at the bistro has left me deciding if I want to stand in a 5 person deep line to get a refill on my soda or just go thirsty and forget about it. So far, I haven't had the patience to wait in a line of 5 people who are all unfamiliar with the new soda machine. So please, get 2 more identical soda machines and stop making people on a 30 minute lunch, wait 5 of it in line for a soda refill. I do like that they give samples. I had a rib sample today (too fatty) and a brisket sample (too dry). At least I know what to steer clear of now. 6/17/14 - EDIT: Someone told me that there is another identical soda machine on the other side, in the seating area. My girlfriend and I came here to check this place out, we stopped by the food court and grabbed a soft shell crab roll and a clam roll. It was good and flavorful on the soft shell crab but the fried clam roll was very greasy. It seems like they didn't let the oil drain enough before serving it on the bun. The whole bun looked like it had been dipped in the deep fryer. We didn't bother eating the bun and just picked the clams out. I had circled around to the sushi department in my eyes the selections are very limited and I wish they had Uni, maybe there isn't a big enough market for Uni in the capital region. During the time I was in the sushi section I got hassled by a Christian recruiter! I had told him that I was not religious but he kept on forcing his beliefs on me. I guess that is just part of his job. The italian section with a wide selection of cured meat and cheese looked good but everything else in the store it was "ok". I probably wouldn't come back here as you can get better stuff outside the market at selected stores around the area. We only grabbed a handful of items to check out and the check out time took a while, there were wayyyyy toooo manyyyy people here especially on a Friday night. It is definitely not worth the time to shop here. It's a very crowded place. read more

I'm a glutton for punishment. I figure I'd give it a few more months. So I came back. Like an idiot. 10 minute wait to get my order taken( there was only one couple ahead if us) , and another 15 min (No Exaggeration) to make two salads - first because they realized they were out of a few ingredients. But they realized it one at a time. So it was repeat trip away after repeat trip away. Slooooowly. Then the person making it, after hearing me say no olives five times plops diced olives on it. And so it goes. The salad was fine. The ordeal to get it - as before- exasperating. Stay away. read more
