We had a small problem with a smoked ham at Easter. I called to let them know. David said to stop by and he would take care of it. I told him we really just wanted them to know about the problem and that we ate the ham, so there was no need for anything on their side. He said I should stop in anyway. Nice store with a nice assortment of beef, Steaks, chops etc. We decided to purchase waygu chop meat and some stew meat. My boyfriend's family adores Fred the Butcher, and that's why I decided to give them a try! When I think of Fred the Butcher, the first things that come to mind are fresh, high-quality meats and great prices! I've only visited the Bistro in the back for their subs and burgers, and they never disappoint. Most recently, I had the Black & Bleu Burger--a bleu cheese-stuffed patty encrusted in blackened seasoning. I'm actually not a huge fan of bleu cheese, but I really enjoyed this burger. I also had their Cuban sandwich, which was yummy. The portions are huge--we usually only finish half and save the rest for later. Best bang for your buck! Everyone working here is always so kind and humble, and there's both indoor and outdoor seating available. It can get a bit busy, so there may be a bit of a wait, but it's always worth it! read more

My friend and I took our families here yesterday. We are from out of state but my friend makes it a point to stop here every time for the great meat selections the sandwiches. We all got variations of their pastrami sandwiches. Everyone loved their meal. Delicious, generous portions and pleasant customer service. A few people in line at the butchers, so there was about a 5-minute wait. People were buying a lot of meat and special cuts take a few minutes. 3.5 stars and have to round down, unfortunately... After 2 visits for take out subs on the way to SPAC, I can confidently say that Fred's the Butcher in CP is a solid 3.5 stars. Fred's came highly recommended from both people I know in that area and also from a Facebook poll/food group asking for take out sandwich's on the way north from Albany. For my first visit, it was a Sunday. I checked the hours online ang also called to verify. Was told last order on hot side was 430 Also, studied the menu before I arrived. I walked in before 4:15 and was told the hot grill was closed. OK. They got an early start on closing procedures on a Sunday - fine. I asked if I could order a hot sandwich but have it cold. The friendly girl whom seems to be the boss said certainly, can always do that. She had a great attitude and was friendly. I ordered the Rachel, to go. Got to SPAC and opened the sandwich and it was HUGE. Tons of meat (turkey). Almost too big. She hooked me up - thanks! But there was very little Cole slaw and basically no dressing so the sandwich was very dry and the worst part, was on dry white bread instead of rye, like the menu stated. That wouldn't have been a problem with me if I was just told and I may've opted for a different bread choice Fast forward to a few weeks later and a Saturday, since we knew the menu and our orders, we called it in before arriving. Asked to order 2 subs for pickup. Immediately, the girl on the phone said we are out of large (12" sub rolls) but do have small 8". It was late afternoon. 1 wanted the Cuban on a large sub roll, gold. I said a small sub roll Cuban is fine, please and do not grill it (just have it made cold). My friend ordered small sub. We arrived for pickup and we were in a hurry. (My mistake). Grabbed 2 Mac salads from the prepared foods case and went to cafe register to get my pickup order and pay. Everything was bagged up and ready for me so I grabbed the order and left. As we were driving and had gotten on 87, we opened the bag to discover 1 sub and 1 sandwich. Apparently either the person taking the order OR the person making the order didn't get it right. That's twice in 2 visits. The Cuban sandwich cold was OK/good. The Rachel was good. Both visits and both sandwiches both certainly weren't great or very good and with mistakes and the price, have to conclude it's just a 3 star place with many areas available for improvement. read more

I bought ground sirloin hamburger today and I bought a 10 pound bag of it because the counter guy said I could save money, which I did! I thought I was buying lean ground hamburger meat and when I started making the hamburgers, I knew I was in trouble! I have never bought such greasy hamburger meat in my life and I will never shop at Fred the Butchers ever again! I cooked the hamburgers for dinner and I thought I was going to have to call the fire Company, because my grill was on fire!!! Shame on you Fred the Butcher!!! read more

Love this place but a couple things should be tweaked. The last 3 times i have purchased potato salad, some of the potatoes were not fully cooked. Ew. Also potato salad needs to have more red onion, celery, egg (or whatever ingredients in use). Too much potato and not enough "salad.". They have a really fun, eclectic selection of upscale groceries. The deli and prepared food seems amazing as well. But I primarily go there for lunch which is always excellent. Subs and grilled items ... nothing exciting ... nothing except the top-end quality of the ingredients. And this is what sets them apart. Seating is kind of sparse so you might be wise to get your selection to go. Staff has always been polite and friendly. Highly recommended. read more

Sunday morning on 9/1/24, I called Fred's to see if they had store made bratwurst and kielbasa. The person who answered the phone said, "Possibly, but I'm not sure." I informed this person that I was coming from an hour away, and I didn't want to make a 2 hour round trip for nothing. The response from the employee was "We should have kielbasa, but I don't know about the bratwurst." Apparently, this employee has no concept of customer service. This employee should have put me on hold and gone to the meat case to check. Fred's is one of the premier butcher shops in the area, possibly the region. I've gotten products from Fred's many times, and they have always been excellent. Today, I went to my local supermarket. read more

Fred the Butcher represents a revelation for me that if I am ever in the area in the future and need a sandwich I will immediately drive to Fred's. Outstanding quality and inexpensive. It's a high end butcher shop and specialty grocery, but tucked in a corner by the front is a sandwich counter where they have a host of deli options. My go to is usually a pastrami Reuben, but they had a triple decker corned beef and turkey with Russian dressing and slaw called the Jersey Boy that I couldn't turn down. Delicious house made corned beef and turkey. Piled high, grilled and served hot, I could only finish half the mammoth sandwich and took the rest home for a second lunch. My lunch partner loved their steak n cheese. Both sandwiches were enormous, but each cost under $9. A definitive bargain for one meal, let alone stretching it effortlessly into two. Oh yeah...try the soups. They're great. I tried a couple of steaks from their butcher and was happy with the quality. Happy to recommend Fred's to all of my friends! read more

I went in today, May 28 2023 to pick up some steaks and burgers. The burgers and Delmonico and strip steaks were very fresh with an adequate amount of marble. They have a team of workers that constantly work the counter, which is very efficient. The only thing I have to say is that when selecting to meet, they need to pay attention to what they're doing at times as I was supposed to get two Delmonico steaks, but instead it appeared I received a Delmonico steak with an Angus strip steak in the package. I called them up and let them know that it wasn't a big deal as the Delmonico's were a couple of dollars less per pound then the Angus strip steak. They informed me that I could bring the item back and get an exchange for the right item. I declined, noting the cost in the amount of gas, I would have to use to bring the item back.. I also ordered six hamburgers which were super size. I immediately had a hamburger when I got home and it was delicious. All in all I was satisfied for the most part. I shall return again to select more very fresh cuts of meat from this location. read more

I've waited a couple of months before writing this. I had called to order subs which I had done many times before. I was told 30 minute, I arrived in 25 minutes but went to get salads first which took over 15 minutes. I then went to the counter to get my subs but there were other customers in line so I had to wait my turn which took another 10 minutes so it's been an hour since I called when I got to the counter and told him I called in an order he just said I didn't make them yet, so I said never mind and I left. I called a couple of days later to talk to a manager and basically I didn't even get an apology for what happened. And just a week ago my fiancé was waiting at the meat counter and when it was her turn the guy behind the counter took the person behind her how rude are these people at Fred's. If you reconstitute the sun dried tomatoes before putting them in the stuffed rice ball, the stuffed rice ball won't have leathery sun dried tomatoes in your bite. Also you won't have to use as many, considering it's probably the most expensive ingredient. Reconstitute them in hot wine for a treat. Service and ambience were excellent. read more
