In general, it's just a Price Chopper. It's ok . . but it could be so much better.
Out of curiosity I stopped in one day after work. On the plus side - it's impressive to look at. I do enjoy that they have included a cooking classroom.
Now for the meat and potatoes:
Underneath the beautiful dressing, it is really nothing more than a regular old price chopper. The food court is really nothing all that spectacular. Most of the 'restaurants' are just glamorous renditions of all the regular things you can find at most other price chopper. For example:
Most PC's have a pizza station within the hot deli area. This Market Bistro simply broke the pizza section out and gave it it's very own food court spot. It still looks like the same old Price Chopper pizza (which is not all that bad - just not all that good).
There is a wings, brisket, ribs area (again, I have purchased smoked brisket, wings at other PC's in their hot deli. . . this is the same stuff, just now given it's very own food court location. Same ol sides (mac n cheese, mashed potatoes, etc).
There is a fried seafood section: Most PC's offer this right in the seafood department. Again . . they simply gave it it's very own location in the food court.
There are a few new eating options - a Salad Area, Burgers (which kinda looked tempting - but I prefer grass fed), and there is a Ben & Bill's which is a big plus. I am a sucker for the B&B Turkey Club (sub Russian for mayo). It's a sandwich as big as your head.
I was also excited to see an Italian area with sausages and pasta by the pound. I asked the gentleman behind the counter where the pasta was made, and he informed me that it was made in Vermont. Vermont??? I am only interested in buying over priced pasta if it is made right in the store - or it is something special imported. But not - imported from Vermont.
Once you get past the food court, the ambiance is very "Fresh Market". The floors are cheap fake hard wood and takes away from the attempt at an upscale look. Up and down the isles: It's mostly the same old Price Chopper with the same ol items you find at all the other PC's.
There is an 'Ethnic ' aisle - and I was excited to see this - but very quickly let down. Kikoman and Goya . . . Keep moving folks . . . nothing to see here.
One of the items on my shopping list was stick pepperoni (I NEVER buy pre sliced - yuck). Unfortunately - all they carry is the cheap Hormel or Margarita brand. You know the plastic slimy pepperoni. Now HERE is where you can import from VERMONT. There are many small time smokers in Vermont that make outstanding pepperoni - smoked on sight!. Get some of that! But Hormel???? Oh boy.
They have a nice sized bakery, and it's split into a few areas (bread, sweets). Within the sweets area, there is a small case dedicated to higher end items. They have some chocolate dipped strawberries (never understood this . . but who am I to judge), chocolate bark, and a few desserts like Eclairs and macarons.
I purchased an eclair because it was pretty to look at. It had mounds of what appeared to be chocolate and vanilla cream on top. The counter girl (who was very very nice) told me that she believed it was something like a mousse. It was . . . abominable. It was very much like a mousse that had stabilizers to help prolong it's shelf life - very very pasty. The choux was rubbery (possibly not made in store, but arrives pre made frozen and they only fill it in store? dunno). It could of been stale, but I specifically asked if it was made today, and was told yes (but who knows).
I bought one of every flavor French macaron too. Ehhhh. . . the shells were decent but the filings were odd. A very off taste . . . in all of them. Hard to know what flavors they were as they all tasted the same. Although one kinda had a nutella flavor that came out slightly.
The bright side: The Market Bistro did a VERY GOOD job in hiring some great staff. Although they don't know all they answers yet and are still finding their sea legs, they are very eager to help. That is worth its weight in gold. I am tired of patronizing a business where employees are rude or could care less. Every single employee that I interacted with was A++. The woman from the Italian sausage and pasta area literally left the counter and walked me around the store in hopes of finding a better quality pepperoni.
For now - I think it's a pretty store to walk around in. I do enjoy the ambiance and the helpful staff. My fear is that once the newness wears off - PC will find they spent a lot of money providing smoke and mirrors.
Bring me something (product wise) that I can't get in other stores. . . otherwise, after the newness wears . . . the sales will drop, the store will cut staff and hours, customer service will suffer, product quality will suffer . . . and just like every other PC, it will become "Meh" read more
