I had McKinnon's pizza today and I loved it. I've been going to McKinnon's for groceries and supermarket items, but didn't try the pizza until now. It reminded me of tasty New York City pizza, which is hard to find in much of New England. I lived in NYC and haven't found many places they have anything like it outside of NYC. I bought an individual sized pot roast that had been made at McKinnon's. What I actually saw was a pie full of starch, two small pieces of chicken, two slices of carrots, and several balls of cooked starch. It was disgusting. McKinnons, do us all a favor and stop selling it. Additionally, the "seafood" stuffed mushrooms are filled with ritz crackers and some kind of stuffing. Been going to this McKinnon's since it opened. Used to recommend it to everyone as the butcher shop always had great cuts at great prices. You could also find fun new niche products to try all the time. I've probably spent over $30,000 doing some quick calculations. Over the last roughly year or so, the downfall of this place as been incredible. The steaks are miserable looking, nothing like a two pack of ribeyes that look like dog food for $50. The chicken and sausage are always a day away from expiration. They're frequently out of products. If I had to guess, bought out by private equity, or family got too greedy. Very unfortunate because I was going here at least once a week and now I'll only go in a pinch for larger cuts on the smoker (pork shoulders, pork belly etc.) I know they won't see this, but if they do, please get it together. read more

Mckinnons provided excellent appetizers and customer service for our wedding. We worked with Nellie and are so glad we did! She answered all of our questions about what to order, sizes, and specifics. The food was excellent! Custom cheese platters, mediterranean platters, lemon grass potstickers, florentine stuffed mushrooms, shrimp platter, antipasto platter. They took extra care to make sure everything was presented beautifully: for example they drew tuxedos on the chocolate covered strawberries! Cannot emphasize enough how excellent the communication was: for example they worked with us to build a custom cheese platter, ensured we had the right amount of food for our guests, and had everything ready to go in the day of the wedding. The apps went so quickly during cocktail hour a people raved about our food! Highly recommend! read more

I heard about McKinnon's from two people who live in the Granite State and they are spot on that this store is *the* place to go for meat. We came to do a recon mission for Christmas Eve dinner ideas and maybe pick up "a few things." We definitely dinged the credit card splurging on massive black pepper beef & vegetable skewers, a smoked ham and enough Italian deli to satisfy my boyfriend with the heavy New England accent and whose "last name ends in a vowel". We did other shopping, too, for everyday things like milk, olive oil, laundry detergent. For some items, prices are very competitive but I got clipped $5 more on the same bottle of olive oil I saw at Market Basket for 35% less. I guess it all evens out in the end. But- if you want to treat yourself to outstanding meats from wagyu, alligator, goose, ultra thick pork chops, McKinnon's is the place to go. Service was great, really nice staff who go out of their way to be helpful and personable. If there was one improvement I could make, McKinnon's needs to step up their produce game. I'm used to jam-packed, beautiful displays in a riot of colors and as interesting as an English garden: Escarole, leeks, four kinds of basil, kefir lime leaves, watercress, carrots, sprouts, fresh tumeric and lemongrass- you name it. Not that everything at McKinnon's wasn't fresh, it was but a vegetable abondanza like their meat displays/cases it was not - and should be. We used McKinnon's for a 13-person sit-down dinner party, and it was fabulous! We had 3 pescatarians, one vegetarian, one dairy-free. We got steak tips, baked haddock, and a meatless lasagna, herb roasted potatoes, green beans almondine. All looked and tasted delicious. When my husband picked up, everything was fresh and hot. I did my own appetizers and desserts, the night before and the day of the party. It was great to have such a nice meal for everyone and still be able to spend the time with our guests. This place is unbelievably amazing. We went here for the first time last weekend to pick up some stuff to grill, had to wait outside because there were so many people inside the building, but the line went quickly and it was worth the wait!! Upon walking in you're greeted with the beautifully laid out butcher shop with SO many different marinated meats, burgers, ribs, kabobs, you name it, they have it! We ended up getting the black pepper marinated sirloin tips, buffalo marinated chicken kabobs, cowboy filet mignon tips, and barbecue marinated kielbasa. ALL of it was fantastic!! Prices were good, the quality was phenomenal, we will be going here more often now that we know what we've been missing!! read more

A good option for meats in the area. Most other goods are expensive. Wrap City chips are $3.50 at MB but $7+ here. My biggest gripe with this store is the self checkout. I made the mistake of buying a cartload of groceries and used the self checkout, NEVER AGAIN! The process treats you like a thief/criminal. A loud voice tells you what to do throughout the process, because thats exactly what you want during the checkout process is a robotic voice micromanaging your every decision. I load up a plastic bag and place it in my cart and loud voice and beeping tells you to put the bag back on the register. Well with a shopping cart full of groceries this isnt only obnoxious but its also inconvenient and impossible. Then every single package of meat you scan puts the transaction on hold until a store associate comes and allows you to continue. Now picture a carriage full of meat... stupidly annoying process that literally treats you as a thief! There was no way to keep all the bagged items on the register station and ive never experienced a self checkout like this one before. It was such a pain in the ass that I dont want to visit that store again, nevermind the outlandish pricing of most goods compared to competitors. If I return for meat I will obviously never use that self checkout system again! read more

Went to get the roast beef that was on sale at 615 at night. Noone in deli and was told to go to pre packaged section. There was one package of pre packaged roast beef that wasn't even a pound and 2 days old. I dont mind prepackaged meats but if u are going to close the deli 2 hours before closing it would be nice if u made sure there was enough meat packaged for people traveling a distance to buy your products. We love shopping for our meats here and always loved that they still had a butcher counter. Last 2 times we used them, the filets (27.99/lb) and rib eyes (18.99/lb) were tough and absolutely tasteless and tough. Not any where near prime or choice ! I will no longer use the butcher counter. Also there were some prepared kebabs that actually had gray meat in them. Date was not expired. Then around the corner, gray sausages, kielbasa, etc. Not sure if there is a refrigeration issue or selling slightly off-meats is okay. read more

So McKinnon's keeps on-a-growing and I have no issues with that. Hint, hint....we have a few empty Shaw's locations in the Medford area that could use a full sized McKinnon's like the Portsmouth location. What I didn't like is that the price points don't align with the Boston stores and I have no idea why. I understand the lease may be a bit more on a full sized grocery store but those that know and love McKinnon's 60 miles south are going to notice. I got lost in here since it is seriously an old grocery store locale. I love the intimacy of my store in Everett where I know that there is only one row for red meats and the other side are the white meats, I was overwhelmed at first and it was definitely not what I was expecting. Here, you can get fresh seafood and any other typical grocer accoutrements. But I came here because we were visiting P-Mouth (is that how the locals refer to it?) and then immediately heading back to Boston for a backyard grilling get together. While I did leave with meats, the chicken thighs were 50% more per lb. than what I'm used to at home and some of the other meats like steaks had a similar markup so I didn't end up picking those up. I did grab a pineapple for only $3 and a handful of veggies to grill that didn't break the wallet. The girl at the checkout was really nice and the lines were short, even on a Saturday afternoon. I didn't like how at the end of the store past the meats and seafood, you literally cannot go any further. Why is there no connection to the checkout area? Good for the McKinnon's to be expanding all over New England, just keep those prices in line because customers notice. Do that and you'll be in business for another 100 years. read more

I've been helped without me initiating it just once, from the Cheesemonger, who was great. At the desserts, the conversation goes back and forth between workers, am I bothering you guys? Today at the deli there were 3 clearly annoyed workers. It was noon, I was the only one there and they needed to look at each other to see who should help. We like McKinnon's, but as it's a bit of a drive, we wait until they have a good sale on something to make the trip worthwhile. Or if we are going up Portsmouth way for some other purpose we will stop in. Usually we end up buying way more than we need! Had to limit things this time because both freezers are almost full to the brim, but wanted to take advantage of the awesome deal on whole pork loins. We feed raw to our dogs, so buy meat when it's a good price and stock up. Got some chicken necks for $.99/lb in the freezer section. Sometimes they have really good deals on ground beef in bulk packaging. Not this time. But then, very few places are dropping the price on beef these days. We picked up some teriyaki marinated steak tips, a nice piece of London broil, and maple bourbon turkey tips. There was some good grillin' this weekend, and enough leftovers to make meals for the freezer. Huge seafood department and there's quite a decent prepped food section. Clam chowder isn't bad. Produce department is a good size. Little more expensive than typical grocery stores. They have a selection of New England dairy products too. They used to carry NH made dog treats, from a Nashua company that employed people with disabilities and helped raise funds for Operation Delta Dog; shelter dogs get trained as service dogs for veterans needing assistance. I love beer and meat so I LOVE McKinnon's. Their meat selection is excellent and the butchers are very helpful. They will go in the back and give you fresh cuts to your liking. They had Delmonico Ribeye that had prime quality marbling for 10.99/lb. That's incredible. Their steak seasoning is awesome. You can get sides for two, such as southwestern corn, green beans, butternut squash, etc. for under $3 each. Last week I made two Smith & Wollensky quality steaks with McKinnon's prepared onion rings and vegetables for $14.88. Amazing! If it was Not so Fresh Market it would have been over $20 and it would have been disappointing, The beer selection is as good as the Hampton Falls Village Market and almost every kind can be found refrigerated. The prepared foods are the best I've had (compared to Fresh market & On the vine). Desserts are from a Boston bakery and the prices are all reasonable. There is no circumstance where I would go to Fresh Market (which is hardly ever fresh!!!) rather than McKinnon's. Plus Shio, the best sushi place in the state is in the same mall. If NH got a Trader Joe's as well there would be no reason to ever leave the state! The BAD: It is very unclear what to do with the shopping carts in the parking lot. I always see people abandoning their carts in empty parking spots. I returned to my car and found a shopping cart up against my car along with 2 deep gouges. I also saw an unattended cart rolling at quite a high speed. Luckily it crashed into a curb. I have since spoken with Susan the manager and she indicated that the cart issue is a priority and is being dealt with. read more

I live in Back Bay across from While Foods. Whenever I get to Portsmouth, I always stop by here to stock my freezer. The meat quality and variety, especially in the sous video ready pre-marinated cuts is unparalleled. The steaks I bought last week, beautiful 1.5"+ NY Strips were superior-simply seared in cast iron and finished with garlic butter and fresh parsley. Produce is also very well stocked and super fresh. Had to grab and go on a busy Sunday afternoon. Picked up a container of Beef Stew to go with this wet evening. I added a little vegetable stock and warmed the stew slowly and let it simmer for about 45 minutes. What a waste of my money. The stew beef was so tough and stringy. It was not browned properly and may have been added raw or microwaved to the stock. A few pieces of potato. The peas looked and had the consistency of undercooked split peas. At least the salad I made and my cheddar cheese bread, helped ease my anger. read more

The Best BBQ Giant Chicken Leg dinner I ever had!!! Yes I know it is a fanatastic butcher shop but they have the best take out meals of anywhere. I have enjoy the roast beef dinners (Only $9.99!) and a their chinese spare rib. ( The also have fresh cook pizzas and other surprises. But for only $5.99!!! I got this giant BBQ Chicken Leg. And I do mean giant. And it was perfectly cooked all the way through without being dry, either. With mash potatos or rich it was an excellant take home meal. Their policy changed. If you're buying wine or beer, they want to see your ID. You can be a white haired, retired person and they'll still hold up the line to make sure you're not some 19 year old wearing a disguise. This is a shame because they've done a good job of getting interesting beers and wines, and it makes me wonder what kind of other dumb decisions management is making. In some ways, McKinnon's is nice. The meat section is impressive, though you have to pay attention to the prices. The produce seems to last longer than most but the produce section feels disorganized to me. There are some good prices here but you have to look for them. And not everything is guaranteed to be good. Not too long ago, I picked up some very disappointing marinated turkey. McKinnons deserves less than 4 stars but more than 3. Since I can't give them 3.5, I'm sticking with four for the time being. read more

I've been shopping McKinnon's right along since they opened where Shaws used to be in Portsmouth. The butcher shop has always impressed me with selection and prices. Now they have brought in tons of Organic produce and dairy items and all natural and Organic groceries at prices I have never seen..YA! Keep up the good work McKinnon's...I tried the organic tortilla chips and they rock...for just two bucks a bag. Oh, and the Applegate Farms deli meats are great too! read more

I'm in love with this store ! I saw this store by accident while I was waiting in line for a ride at Water Country. I needed a few groceries for the week so we stopped by afterwards. I was IN LOVE with the marinated meat section. a WHOLE aisle with fridges on both sides dedicated to marinated chicken, pork and beef. I loved that the meat are vacuumed sealed so it last longer in the fridge. Prices are very reasonable, well in line with market basket. Some of the marinated meats on sale was actually LESS than Market basket's non marinated steak tips. I will definitely be back and buy a whole cart! read more

I live right down the street from this location and love the convenience. The deli section is great, love the huge pistachio muffins here, turkey burger is very good. They sell IGA store brand on a lot of items which can definitely save you a few bucks. The prepared dinners, roasted chickens, marinated and stuffed meats, yummy decadent desserts, excellent produce, coffee and wine and cheese sections keep me coming back. The staff is friendly and courteous. I love the pink shopping carts and distinctive yellow grocery bags too. McKinnon's rocks! Plus they do community service and raise $$ and awareness for abused and homeless animals. read more
