I just feel like I HAVE to leave a review of this Trader Joe's because I have received extraordinary customer service on multiple occasions when visiting. First - my roommate and I visited Trader Joe's right after moving to Portsmouth. The cashier looked at our IDs since we were buying wine, and when she found out that we had just moved to the area, she gave us a reusable bag as a welcome gift. We were so touched by this welcome and really appreciated the gesture as we had just arrived and were starting to settle in. Second, and most recently, my partner and I were picking up a couple of items on a Sunday night. We went to get in the checkout line and then remembered that we needed to grab one more thing. Just then, the bagging attendant told us "I'll open another lane for you guys" to which we responded that we needed to grab another thing. He told us it was not a problem and he'd be ready when we got back, and returned to bagging. We went, got our item, and upon our return to the checkout line, the attendant immediately opened up another lane. Although this may seem small, I was so appreciative that the attendant not only wanted to improve our experience initially, but cared enough to keep an eye on us while we picked up another item and opened up another lane for us as soon as we returned. I felt that it truly went above and beyond and I wish I remembered his name to give him a shoutout. I would be remiss if I concluded this review with no mention of the Trader Joe's food. Their frozen meals are amazing and all of their food is so high quality; I've never had a product that disappointed. read more

If you live in Southern maine, you have two options for Trader Joe's. You can go here or go to Portland. Since this one is closer than the Portland location, we opted to visit this location. There is ample parking and the staff are friendly. Plenty of fresh produce, flowers, beverages, and frozen meal options. I personally prefer to go here than Hannaford. read more

We drive 25-30 minutes away to go here...so that says something. Staff are always amazing. The upkeep of the store, even amidst the busier days is always fantastic. We're creatures of habit, but this TJ's has offered up suggestions, given samples and nudged us to give new items a try...so now our list of every day's has grown. So many good choices! This is definitely one of my favorite Trader Joe's location, spacious, no lines to pay, abundance of products plus wines and beers for purchase whenever you want! What more do you need? Alcohol shops in MA and NY all have a strict time to begin buying wines, we learned that the hard way last time when we were outside of Boston at a Trader Joe's and had to walk around for an hour waiting around. So hubby was glad there was no time restriction. We were in and out of this shop very quickly, and did I mention no lines! A great TJ's very pleasant cashier, well stocked and lots of choices.. Try to make it to this store when we are in NH on vacation. We do have a local store in Albany, NY that we frequent but this is just a great stop for everything we forgot across the state line from York, ME where are camping. Check out all the orchids and succulents they have... they look very hearty and well kept. Courteous cashier (didn't get her name) was so pleasant greeting me and listening to me as I rambled on about my vacation. Traveling here is such a pleasure! Big, bright, well-stocked and organized, this is one of the shiniest pennies in the Trader Joe's store collection. Unusually wide aisles and easy-to-find items, the store followed the conventional layout that made zipping in for a few items so easy. And, thank you someone smart for locating the spice section within an aisle rather than at the end of the row: I didn't get bumped or feel rushed to grab 'n' go because I was in people's way. Come here multiple times a week to pick up pre-made salads, snacks, fruits, and cheeses. The staff are all very friendly and although they are a small store, they have a wide variety of items. The prices are pretty reasonable but I usually end of spending little more than I planned as I usually find something else I would like to try. Not extremely busy as it was in the Summer time but still lots of people are always in the store shopping. read more

Really like to come here. Never had a bad experience here. Unlike some other stores I could shop at. There's another store I can get groceries at but the checkout lines are Always crazy. A bunch of people that look like that want to fight with everyone in Line. But here at Trader Joe's is perfect, never ever a bad experience. It's really neat and clean. Great products, great employees, terrible shopping experience every time. That really isn't the fault of any member of staff; it's simply that we need more TJ's locations in this area because this one is absolutely MOBBED every time I set foot inside it. Well worth the fun items you can't get anywhere else and the prices are generally comparable to anywhere else, but I don't go more than once or twice a year any more because I lack the intestinal fortitude required to plow through a massive crowd in order to get the handful of things I want. Being able to casually browse is simply not a thing in this store, and that's a shame. read more

A Trader Joe's is a Trader Joe's is a Trader Joe's, right? No. I can't put my finger on it, but I'm not as big of a fan of this place as I am of the Portland location. This one feels, I don't know, like a soulless clone from some sci-fi novel about the monotony of grocery shopping. The layout seems fragmented and the staff's (usually overt) friendliness seems dialed down. There's nothing wrong with this location (I'm being mega picky here, and in the grand scheme of things it's just a grocery store, I get it), but compared to Portland it just seems watered down. Still love all the amazing Trader Joe's seasonal products, fun products, vegan products, etc. It's a great place to shop and if I lived nearby - and didn't know the Portland, ME one existed - I'd happily shop here. read more

Want to know how exciting it is to walk into a Trader Joe's that actually has wine? Also want to know how hard it is to refrain from buying every single bottle because you can? (I'm from Pennsylvania, where we still live in the 19th century...at least when it comes to alcohol purchasing) I was super excited to find TJ's when I was out looking for snacks. I know that they are one place where I will be able to grab things that are going to be friendly to my allergies. No, I'm not one of those people that ram it down your throat that my allergies matter, I am one of those that politely decline your food and read the labels when I'm in the store. I enjoy the amount of organic items offered because that affords me a better shopping experience. I really like that I can actually grocery shop and not wonder if I'm buying something I can't consume. And I just actually like how everything I have picked up here tastes good. Walking out with a bag full for under $20 is also a good feeling. That's with a bottle of wine included. I went a little overboard and had stuff left over to take home after this trip. read more

I had no idea until recently that Trader Joes is actually owned by one of the brothers who own Aldi (the other one has the rights to the Aldi name in North America). In size, it's somewhere between an Aldi in Britain and a main supermarket here. I liked the display ethos with the hand-lettered signage, which gives it a slightly old-school friendly appearance. There's a good selection of food stuff and the prices seem reasonable, but I'm not well-acquainted enough with the US shopping scene to give a decent comparison with other places. read more

Every location has helpful nice people. Today here it was there in force. I first noticed it in the chip and peanut butter pretzel aisle. A gentleman could tell everyone had the million mile stare . He helped a woman find the last bag of plantain chips. Why do I remember because she was thanking him so much. Like he found gold for her. He continued to help everyone in the aisle who need it . Typically, if you've been in one Trader Joe's you've been in all of them. This store is not an exception to that. This one however, is getting 4 stars because the crew member was very helpful. She went out of her way to get me what I wanted. They don't get 5 stars because like a lot of their other stores they're often out of what you want and need. This doesn't bode well with me considering it's so far away. One thing she told me that was very helpful was to call ahead on the day of your visit to see if they have what you want. If they do they will hold it for you on that day. They are really scoring major points here but they are just not worthy of 5 stars. Lots of organics at this store. I don't know if it's any different than most but it seemed to be. I think the store is bigger than most of the TJ's I've been in. They have wine and that is a huge bonus. It's strange though. The liquor police have a strangle hold on establishments like this and determine when and how much wine is released to a store. It's bizarre really. Being from the West Coast such tight liquor control is foreign to me. As a result, they are sometimes out of favorites. The person at the store in full Halloween costume was very helpful and helped me decide on a moderately priced Pinot Grigio that she said is very good. It's often hit or miss at Trader Joe's and this store is no exception. I think it's a problem with suppliers, or so they say, but sometimes I wonder how much of it is the person placing the orders. They were out of one of my staples. The organic salted crunchy peanut butter. I usually stock up on this stuff but today they had 1 jar left. Really like it in here. The minute you walk in, the place just feels and smells... clean, natural. They have a wide variety of natural foods, some of which (like the dried Kale) are for the more brave-hearted. Just an overall fun store to get good, quality groceries. I love Trader Joe's for a lot of things! They have some items I can't find anywhere else. I shop at this one weekly for weekend dinners and certain snacks. I love there dessert items, dried fruit items especially the coconut chips! They also carry my favorite iced tea, Teajava. They have a nice selection of items, but I couldn't do my whole grocery shopping here as it's too expensive for me and there are certain things they don't carry. Love Trader Joe's no matter which 1 we visit and this one is no exception. Lots of variety in their offerings---all kinds of healthy, yummy choices to make. Lots of organic products, produce, snacks, frozen items, flowers, great cheeses---the list goes on! Always busy, so you may not find what you're looking for because they have run out. It can be hit or miss, which can be tough if you don't live in the area and you've stopped for something specific. Staff is always friendly and helpful. Check out lines seem long at times, but due to efficient cashiers, move very quickly. Prices are reasonable, especially Two Buck Chuck which is now a bit higher than $2, but still a good price for a bottle of everyday wine! I just spent about 40mins in a line outside to get in this place thinking it was this big organic grocery store like Sprout's, boy what a huge disappointment. They really didn't have much of anything if you need wine, chips or dog food they had more of that. I found more at Ocean State Job Lots. We really need a Sprout's on this side of the country. I am among those who greatly anticipated the new store. Unfortunately, the general manager both has staffed the store almost entirely with rookies and seems determined to let the learning curve run its course without any help or consideration for customers who suffer through it. The store was laid out like any other TJs but the checkout lines were both long and chaotic. Most registers had TJ rookie customers lining up in front of the counter and us veterans lining up behind it. NO ONE from the store was doing ANYTHING to alleviate this. One employee admitted that the problem of having rookie cashiers was compounded by TJs registers being configured differently than most other store's setups. The store manager was largely apathetic regarding the whole matter when I discussed the matter the next day. He just said that nothing is going to change and that the higher ups defer to him. As an aside, I discovered that TJs has discontinued yet another favorite item; this time it is the family-sized frozen cheese enchiladas. Nothing at TJs warrants thus aggravation or contributing to the bank account of its 1940s era German army owner. read more

And if it couldn't be any better, yesterday one of the cashiers witnessed the rudeness of another customer to me and, without a word, went over to the flower display and put a lovely plant in my cart, and apologized for the woman's poor behavior. I absolutely love Trader Joe's! This is the closest location to me but it's still a 30 minute drive to get here...I totally wish they would open one closer but for now I hit this store up a couple times a month to stock up. The people that work here are usually very helpful...I do run into a couple stock associates that seem annoyed when asking them for help. It's a rare occasion though. Some of my favorite foods here are the Carne Asada Steak (great for grilling and putting in burritos!), the Sriracha BBQ Sauce, half & half lemonade tea, sweet potato tortilla chips, and all their cheeses! Wish there was a Trader Joe's closer to us. Choices are either this Newington store, or Nashua, so we usually make a stop when we are in those locations for other errands. Even though the store is a small footprint, having the aisles on an angle and shelves not super high, makes it feel more open. Even when really busy, it doesn't feel too crowded and the checkout lines go fairly quickly. Staff are always cheerful and helpful. Prices are reasonable and good product range, including a large selection of beers (can mix and match) and wines. Sometimes fresh foods are short dates, e.g. the sushi was expiring the day we visited (one package had already gone past date). But organic chickens for $2.69/lb were a great buy! We scored five boxes of pumpkin dog treats. They might not be there next week being a popular seasonal item. Learned that lesson last year much to the dog's dismay. People were selling them on eBay for more than 5x the price! read more

I moved from Dover to the Northshore last March and I haven't been to the Portsmouth TJs. Reading the reviews I noticed the same comments when they opened the Saugus store on Route 1 north. I would go in there and the inventoey was limited and the staff was inexperienced but trying hard to please. I would go back every month or so auntil they got their act together.
