Won't be back. I shop here weekly and sometimes more. The woman in the deli with the brunette hair pulled back in a bun is typically rude, but today was the last time I will have to deal with her. What bothered me the most wasn't that she ordered sweet Elsie to write down what I wanted, or that she took pleasure in informing me "it was going to be a while because we have a lot of orders", "just so ya know", as if my ordering a chicken salad and a tuna wrap at their deli was a inconvenience. What was problematic, was after waiting 20 minutes (and filling my carriage while shopping and checking back in), I then witnessed 3 men (who seemed to be regulars) place their order, which was then expedited, and their sandwiches were then handed to them within minutes. When I finally received my 2 sandwiches, I checked to make sure they were what I had ordered and they were missing most of the ingredients that sweet Elsie had so painstakingly transcribed. When I brought it to the brunette's attention that the sandwiches were missing ingredients she wasn't pleased. She grabbed a pad of paper to take my order once again and I informed her she keep her sandwiches and the carriage full of food I had collected while waiting and being passed over for customers who are prioritized. I am fairly certain this is a family owned business. She's probably part owner. She obviously hates her job. It's unfortunate, but I don't have time for this nonsense. I'll spend my money else where. Making a review for their cakes. We got an awesome birthday cake from them. Chocolate and vanilla two layer with coconut filling between the layers and chocolate frosting. They allowed total customization with each layer, filling and frosting. And their top embellishments of various chocolate pieces and twirls were unexpected and exquisite. All arranged with utmost courtesy and with only needing a reasonable amount of lead time. We were incredibly happy with the cake and it was a quick order and make. read more

We ordered to go monthly & I'm aware this can happen BUT no way this many X's we'd find that 7" red hair in the midst. The Saga continued. Was it a 1 off, fluke or intentional? I was in another room, all of a sudden my husband raises his voice "you're not going to Freaking believe it!!" Freak wasn't the word. I said "not again, are you freaking kidding me!" "Nope!" I went into our comfortable dining area &:he showed me the 5th" red hair. This happened repeatedly, it seemed it was intentional with the deli sandmaker aka S.M man. Idk if he who was in the back room laughing with deviant hahahahaha, rubbing his hands together with the grim sly look & loving every minute of it! We tipped at least 20---30% consistently. After the 4th or 5th final hair it appeared to be conveniently between meats & cheeses, Russian dressing, layering of hair in red was lined w/perfection very specific! It was obvious this dude had something against some or a few by the hairs! I will never know. I'd go in & tell myself "geez I hope he's not the sandwich maker if he was in was leaving. He's what I acronymed~SNARL~Sneak Attack Redhair Lurks! Gross yuk & I refuse to eat anything even from my kinfolk! The final straw~ seeing the red hair pasted deliberately in between the meat/cheese Russian distressing. The hair was pulled back at the hairnets, let them wear their own tightly fitting caps or hats, this hair wasn't a loosey goosey fluttering down from the skies! I purchased 4 garlic/cheese sausage today and was having them for dinner this evening. I had to throw them away as they had such a horrible freezer burn taste that they could not even be eaten. It doesn't tell you that they were previously frozen but there was other sausage in the case that were just put out and frozen. With that said - a week ago I purchased 2 lbs of "house" tips and they were so blend with no flavor at all. We have been customers of OTV for many years and the quality and service has gone down hill. Will be looking to shop elsewhere. Very disappointed. read more

I love On the Vine! The service is top notch, from the deli to the hot food to the bakery and everywhere in between. On my last trip, I picked up some steak tips (love the maple bourbon especially), bacon, fresh salmon, and cupcakes. All were delicious! Not to mention how nice of a space it is. Everything is easy to find, but the staff are always more than happy to help. The prices are a bit higher, but that is to be expected in this day and age, especially with so many locally sourced products. (The salad bar is also a great choice for lunch). read more

Lovely small grocery store with a fabulous variety of fresh vegetables, prepared foods, bakery items, wine, meats and bulk snack items. They also stock some gift items. The store is an unexpected gem tucked in a strip mall. This is the perfect place to find a thoughtful gift or just the right thing to bring as a dinner guest. read more

However they don't enforce the mask mandate for their employees and it's especially offensive when the guy making sandwiches never wears a mask. The Good: The meat in their butcher shop is awesome. Pricey, but top quality stuff. They sell a lot of cuts that you're never in a million years going to find at Hannaford or Shaws. The beer and wine selection is also great. The So-so: The dessert counter and the prepared foods are nutty expensive. I mean, over the top, great jumpin' Jehosephat, how the hell do they charge $30 for this little bitty cake expensive. The Bad: Their employees and their technology... let's just say I admire their dedication to continuing to employ some of these people. And their credit card readers are, no joke, the biggest pieces of junk in retail. They barely work, when they're not down. read more

I really thought I had reviewed this place a long while back. I'm almost glad I didn't, as it would have changed, over the past two years. Of note: the Maine location has a different vibe and puts out a more consistent product. The good: When they are "on", their sandwiches are quite good - in fact, I used to send folks here, rather than other local alternatives. If you are looking for a plain cup of coffee, it's nice to have this place as a local option, since they have better hours than some other nearby cafes. Coffee won't be life altering (like Horseshoe Cafe or Flight), but it also won't be burnt Starbucks for a buck extra. Handy place to buy a small dessert, say for a gift. Options are fantastic, quality/aesthetics are all you could hope for (for a non-specialty bakery), though the prices are a bit steep. Very small dining area (three tables), gives customers an option to eat there. Atmosphere is as good as they can make it, considering it's just tables in the front of the registers. Still, it's appreciated. The not-so-good: Produce prices are high, as expected; as is the cost of many specialty items (also, as expected). Sandwiches used to seem expensive, then everyone else caught up. They don't seem to believe in COVID. This was the first place that prepared my food with no hint of face protection. To make the contrast more stark, some employees in the food prep area (one or two), were wearing masks (pre and post vaccine availability) - none of those sensible people ever made my sandwich, however. I've been told that some other employees are just as troubled as customers by the laxity, but nothing is done about it. And any "medical exemption" feels pretty flimsy, in light of the current death toll. A few of said dead-eyed, maskless employees put out crap product. Mismade and uncut sandwiches, 1/4 sub with nothing but bread, wildly variable portions...you name it. Which is made more awful by how good their product can be, when the employee making the food is one who cares about their output and customers. I'm thinking it may no longer be worth the crap-shoot to come here. Espresso drinks. The difference between a small and large cappuccino is foam level. The difference between a small and large latte is milk level. The difference between a small and large Americano is the addition of more water. There is no coffee difference (to match the cost difference); this has been confirmed. WHY!? This area has too many options to make this place a regular stop, as it once was - at least not until they get back to pushing out a quality product. It should be said that I have no experience with the meat counter in the back of the store, so please don't let these comments reflect their work. read more

I was shocked at the way the person who made sandwiches treated my son when he was shopping in the store and picking up stuff for me along with getting a sandwich. The weird thing is I knew who he was referring to as I had an incident months ago with the same individual but seeing as I had never encountered them again...I thought it was a one shot deal.... Whoever is in charge of who makes sandwiches for customers needs to sort that area out....customers sandwiches should not be slammed down when they are completed and disrespecting the customer does not bring in business.... This is a fantastic store that I've shopped at for years, so I'm going to rate according to that. They generally sell high quality stuff and the service is good. However, the lack of masks on the employees (May 17th, 2020) was ridiculous. I saw zero. Virtually all of the customers I saw were wearing them. I'm not returning until that changes. read more

On the Vine should train their Deli and Fish Dept personnel in customer service. First let me say that we love On the Vine and shop there multiple times a week, especially for Meat, Produce and Wine. The staff in the Meat Dept are super friendly and anyone I have met while selecting Produce is equally as friendly. Then the Deli, UGH. Every single time I go it is like they are not interested in actually helping customers. There have been more times than I can count where I am the only one at the counter, staff makes eye contact, turns away and continues to wipe the counters, prep food, wash utensils, or chat to each other. It's infuriating and it's not just me, I have walked up when one or two other customers at the counter and nobody is waiting on them. Several times other customers have just walked away. After every visit I say never again, then about a month later I decide to get something from the Deli and receive the same poor service. Yesterday was the last straw, I walked up to the counter, the man looked right at me, and before I could even say hello, he turned his back, went to the back of the deli and made himself busy, there were also 2 women behind the counter, finally one looked at me, walked over and asked if she could help me. They are constantly talking amongst themselves, on more than one occasion, I have seen someone texting, and they never actively try to help anyone. And depending on who is working in the Fish Dept I have either received great service or non existent service. One time the man (older and kind of balding) looked right at me, turned around and walked into the cold room, never to be seen again. I bought steaks instead that night and received great service from the Meat Dept. A few weeks ago I went to the Fish counter and a younger employee waited on me, the service was great. I will never buy from the Deli again, and will decide on Fish based on who is behind the counter. I am also seriously rethinking my weekly visits as it is just not worth it to have such hit or miss service. I really hope Management will look into this, I am sure I am not the only one with these concerns. I wish they actually had employees who liked their jobs and the customers, it's such a shame as small independent stores like this need to maintain a loyal customer base to survive against the bigger chains. read more

Friendly staff, and just had a positive experience with Ed, the manager, who made sure I was satisfied with a recent purchase. We used On The Vines Bakery for our Baby Shower this weekend and oh my god. I cannot get over how incredible our cake and cupcakes came out. We got a beautiful custom cake and 50 cupcakes for the most reasonable price. Not to mention everything was absolutely delicious. We had 50 guests and we've been receiving non stop calls about how incredible the cupcakes were and where we got them. They were honestly the best cupcakes I've ever had in my entire life. Not to mention the head baker was so lovely to work with. She took the vision of the cake I wanted and just blew it out of the water and exceeded all my expectations. The On the Vine bakery is a true hidden gem as it's part of a mid-high end supermarket. However, it really needs to be treated as its own entity. Cindy and Hannah are remarkably experienced pastry chefs whose products can rival the fanciest and most expensive pastries in country. I've tried just about everything and every variety they serve, including pies and cupcakes. My wife had two cakes made for my last birthday. One was a custom $400 cake made elsewhere and the other was a $50 cake from On the Vine. The guests overwhelmingly preferred the On the Vine cake. They made a Rhubarb pie that made my mother's jaw drop after one bite. She said in her 70 years she never had anything so delicious. I recently bought an egg nog cupcake which I thought I would hate since I'm not an egg nog fan. I polished that thing off, loosened my belt, and then ate half of one of their peanut butter brownies (which I think are the best I've ever had). The crime is that the awesome talent possessed by Cindy and Hannah is credited to On the Vine. If I had the money and time, I'd start my own bakery, hire the girls, double their salaries, and shock the seacoast with the best desserts ever to touch their palates Minor update: Cindy and Hanna are gone. I am not sure if the superior quality went with them. I tried some cupcakes in September 2011 and I noticed a difference. read more

I waited in line to enter the grocery store on 6/7/20. When it was my turn to enter the building a young employee (without a mask) told me to stand by her and wait. I then looked around and observed that none of the employees had masks on. I asked the young lady why not and she replied that the owner said he had no control over it and ultimately did not feel it was a risk. Discouraged, I turned around and exited the building. This policy, or lack thereof, demonstrates that the owner and management are not concerned with the well-being of their patrons. Especially in a town (Scarborough) that has so many elderly residents; this is flagrantly irresponsible. For the sake of our vulnerable residents, I will shop elsewhere. read more

I really like this market. They have some nice quality items you can't get anywhere else in the area. Their bakery has some unique goods and their seafood is always fresh. Same for the butcher shop. While there last week, I noticed not all employees were wearing masks and some of those wearing them weren't wearing them correctly. People, there is currently a pandemic. Employees should be protecting the food they serve and package, and the customers who continue to support their market. Some customers also were not sporting a mask and this is disheartening. Another customer was complaining about the employees as well. Wont be back until this changes. read more

Sent my son to buy some steaks for his Birthday. They are usually very expensive but the quality is ALMOST worth it, but not quite. When he came home I was shocked.
