Since we've moved to Charlotte we have heard over and over again about the "gas station fried chicken". We finally caved and gave it a try and it did not disappoint. The woman working was so kind and she was all over every person that walked in the door. The chicken was juicy, breading was incredible without being too much, and the sides were great as well. They have both jumbo and regular sizes, as well as spicy and non. This definitely beats any fast food fried chicken. I would say to get there earlier, they were nearly sold out of some of the stuff around 630 pm. You know it's good if all of the construction workers pop in right after their shift. It's not the best fried chicken I've had, but it was pretty darn good and exceeded expectations. I'll hit this spot again before going to a fast food joint for sure! read more

Yes, it's a gas station and inside, amongst the counters with lottery tickets and cigarettes and coolers with drinks, there's a counter with a huge pile of chicken and fixings! The young lady who took my order put the chicken in the box with a biscuit and my side of green beans (I wanted cole slaw, but she warned me that it was a very small container). I paid for it at the register and took it with me. The main concern here is that it's an extremely small parking lot and there really isn't any other parking nearby. If you're filling up with gas (it's not cheap), that would work. Okay, the chicken. Hot. Crispy. A little spicy. Delicious. Was it better than Bojangles? Don't ask me to answer that. Everyone talks about this fried chicken. It took me forever to try it, but we finally had it this week. It's probably not the best choice as far as social distancing goes. I thought I would beat the crowds at 4, but it was crowded. It's a small space with a lot of people crowded in it. We got three piece meals (a leg and two thighs). One we got a side of mashed potatoes and the other tater wedges. We got a mix of spicy and non-spicy. The chicken was delicious. Get the spicy. It's not really spicy, just has seasoning. The non-spicy was good as well, but not quite as good. The sides weren't that memorable. The mashed potatoes were pretty good. The tater wedges weren't good. The rolls weren't good. So we're in town driving around from bar to bar as usual and Mr Mathews suggests we get some breakfast! What a great idea! Inside the Quick Shoppe is a hot box full of all things breakfasty, and lunchy, and kinda dinnery too but it's 8:30am and that means sausage, egg and cheese sandwich on toast! not a biscuit, not a croissant or an english muffin or brioche, it's toasted bread. two slices. mustards and mayos. $2.50 each when you by two. plus $2.00 hash browns for the boss. I've always been a fan of gas-n-grubs so I'm good here. yeah it's kind of a train wreck getting in/out/food but it's 2-for-$5 breakfast sandwiches so deal with it. The sign on the window says best fried chicken in town and I would have to agree. This isn't your typical QT, Sheetz, Wawa or even 7-11 where you know they sell food, driving past here you wouldn't give it even a thought that they sold food. Well they do! And it's good. Definitely some of the best fried chicken that I have had in Charlotte. The spicy chicken is the best but all of the chicken is seasoned very well. The chicken gets 5 stars but overall it's about a 3.5 star experience but it's a gas station so expectations aren't too high on the service. Perfect choice for National Fried Chicken day. For just north of 7 bucks i got 3 piece chicken with 1 side. The side was the famous wedges. In my opnion they were just ok. Too large and have had better. The mac and cheese would've been a better choice. It comes with a roll as well which conpletes it. Plenty of optilons and can opt for a bucket if you prefer. They are super fast as it is already prepared. My tip would get there early so that you get fresh. We got there around 11 i think. After getting your food you then take it to the cashier. I went back and fourth between 3 stars or 4 stars. The over all experience was just okay but then again it is chicken from a gas station. So i gave them a little leeway. Because they are in a gas station the parking situation wasnt the best. Luckily the service is fast. I stopped in on national friend chicken day and was disappointed they didnt have any mac and cheese. So I went with their so called famous potato wedges. I'm not a huge fan of potato wedges but I still think they hyped them up a little too much. They are huge which resulted in one of mine not being cooked all the way through. I've had a few colleagues swear by this chicken. Well, I've tried it 2x now so I can write about it and let you know - you're not missing anything AND ESPECIALLY AT THESE PRICES. Sides are limited. They offer breakfast. Chicken before 11am is worthwhile as most fastfood places don't open until 11am and it's nice not to have to have breakfast items. They serve breakfast items; chicken wings that are larger for the wing combo's; potato wedges and of course, you can use your Shell gas card here. ATM on site. Harder than most places to get in and out but pretty ok for the location as South Blvd can get ridiculous with the traffic flow. Staff at the gas station service counter always friendly and personable. Never bought gas here - go figure. read more

Aka, I snuck out of work early to eat a 10:45 am lunch...no shame, no shame. I got the dark meat (my jam), spicy drumstick meal with a side of mac&cheese and green beans, because vegetables, y'know? Couple of packets of hot sauce and I was all set to go eat in the privacy of my own house where I could lick my grease covered fingers free of judgment. The fried chicken was salty, skin was crisp but kind of slid off the meat in a sad way that left me wanting more crunch to it. That being said, I still ate it and the every single piece of dark meat on the bone. The mac and cheese was delicious, the green beans...meh. The final verdict? After some thorough research on the intranets for the best fried chicken in charlotte, I came across the shell gas station on the corner of east and south. The quik shoppe is literally located in between the candy rack and the windshield washer fluid. My Uber driver told me it was a place only locals know about and at midnight or so, the line is wrapped around pump #5 with drunkards getting it in. Yes. My kind of place nothing fancy. Cheap food. And a mean ole lady who didn't help me at all. Well not mean, just uncaring. But who cares about the lunch lady, let's see what the hype is all about. I ended up with a modest 12 piece, wedges, and mac and cheese. Perhaps I had made some mistakes. I don't know. I went there at noon and not midnight. But the chicken was piping hot. Maybe i was sober. Maybe I had my hopes up too high. The chicken. There was good In it. For one, the meat had a texture and consistency which I've never had in chicken. It was soft and velvety. Almost like a chocolate mousse. The crust was perfectly crunchy with plenty of black pepper and spices. But beyond the crust and cloud like texture, the meat wasn't seasoned. I've been taught how to make chicken by the best. Rule 1 is always add a shot load of seasoning before you coat in flour. Rule 2 is never season the flour much. It tends to burn off in the oil. But I gotta say though, this was some pretty legit chicken. Better than bojangles to say the least. Not better than Popeyes. Damn. Imagine Popeyes flavor with this places texture. Damn. The wedges. Holy crap. Some damn good wedges. And they weren't skimpy with it. Lovely lunch lady gave me an entire containers worth. At least 25 spears worth. Lightly coated and fried. Heavily flavored. Lots of folks use this place too and between buying gas, fried chicken or beer, there is always folks waiting in some line. The Quik Shoppe fried chicken vs the legendary "other place nearby that only takes cash."... So we ordered 80 pieces of spicy friend chicken and a butt load (yes, a butt load) of potato wedges (because vegetables) and carted them back to the office. Quik Shoppe, oh how I wanted to rate you higher. Great chicken, cheap, and accessible. However, the 3 star average it has is fair. So, why give them a 3 with great chicken? Well, it's because all the other choices go from not great to ok. The mac and cheese is not great (my wife sampled a bite of mine and immediately said "No! No!" and spit it out) and the potato wedges are just ok (soggy and not crispy). The wings are good, but the big chicken pieces is where it's at. However, you are best served by getting some fried chicken, a bag of chips and a coke or Mountain Dew. Don't worry about any of the other choices. This is why I give it a 3. The service is ok, once again, not great. You combine that with 1 great thing on the menu, means a 3 is the best I could do. It's a good choice if you have on a little time and also need some gas. However, if you have time, there are better places to get fried chicken. Also, if you like your chicken paired with mashed potatoes or mac and cheese like I do, there are places you could get those pairings with both the meat and side shining. P.S. the roll is banging . However, since you could just buy these rolls at your local supermarket or at your family cookout, I can't up their score for it. The store was stocked and a little grimy on the floors...but hey this a gas station and you definitely won't be eating in there. Take out only. If you're looking for conveniently located, super-greasy drunk-food fried chicken, you've come to the right place. From the outside, it looks pretty dirty and gross. From the inside, it smells a little dirty and gross. But once you bite into the BEST POTATO WEDGES in Charlotte, you won't care where you are. Truthfully, you should probably only come here after you've head plenty of drinks and already don't know where you are. In all seriousness, the food is perfect drunk food although slightly overpriced. The convenience store has generic inventory, and the gas is competitively price. The staff could be a little friendlier. Again, if you're stumbling around South End looking for drunk food, you've stumbled into the right place. Yeah, I'm reviewing a Shell gas station. Why? Because this is the closest gas station to my house and yes, I've experienced better. The high points: As mentioned, it's conveniently located - South & East Blvd. They have gas. They also have ice and the typical soft drinks, snacks and other gas station expected items inside. The guys behind the counter have always been friendly. The low points: OMG the traffic getting in and out of here is redic...be super careful coming and going. The number of people trying to turn out of here *across* traffic on South or East boulevards borders on insane. As others have mentioned there are some shady characters that frequent this lot to do what looks like to be less than desirable business. And lastly, because of its convenient location, this gas station usually sells gas for at least a $.05-$.10 per gallon premium. I'll be back to this Shell...unfortunately. read more

I had the spicy chicken breast meal with collard greens and a roll. The collard greens were great and a little spicy (which I love). The chicken was INCREDIBLE!!! I think the chicken might be great here. It looked great. People told me it was great. I went in yesterday and I was not only the only person attempting to buy fried chicken but I was the only patron in the entire store. The lady behind the counter glanced at me so I smiled & nodded cause I was expecting, "what can I get for you". That didn't happen, no biggie. She continued to work for 3-4 minutes, glancing my way a couple times. She went about her work as I waited to share my order. She never asked. After 4-5 minutes she said, "I'll be right with you". She then turned away to go cook more chicken. I waited about 30-45 more seconds as she tended to the frying chicken, then gave up. It was the oddest encounter Ive had trying to order food IN MY ENTIRE LIFE. So, I guess expect great chicken cause I heard it was great but maybe not expect kind, friendly, prompt service. I was in the shop on Wednesday June 10 around 2:30 and this review is regarding the food counter. It was a cheat day and wanted to order the fried chicken because the Quik Shoppe .,East Blvd. is listed as one of the best places to get fried chicken in Charlotte. Even if it is from a gas station. The lady behind the Food market counter needs some training. I found her to be rude and/or unfriendly. (Bad customer service.) She told me to take a real good look at the menu and that she would be back. Well she never really came back. She-continued doing something in the back leaving me standing there for quite some time. So, I stated that I'm ready to order whenever you are and proceeded to tell her my order. She rudely stated I cannot hear you! There is an exhaust running back here and you're wearing a mask. Well if she had come back to the counter perhaps she can hear the customer(s). This lady has no customer service skills. I felt bad for her because it was obvious that she dislikes her job. I stop there every morning on the way to work. The staff that is there has always been super friendly and I look forward to seeing them. The main problem right now are the pan handlers. The are always there in the morning and lately they have become very aggressive and belligerent if you don't give them anything. This morning one came up and grabbed my car door before I closed it. Had to tell him three times to walk away. Last time telling him he was going to loose his hand if he didn't let go of my door.
