During a recent trip to the Great Smokey Mountains National Park we took a visit to Cherokee. A lot of the town was closed but I had a very nice at Nancy's which sells all sorts of Native American crafts. The store is huge and every inch of space from the front porch into the store is crammed with clothing, dream catchers, pottery, baskets, accessories, hats, shoes, blankets, and bags. I will always remember how I attended a Pow Wow in Florida and the Native American speaker urged support for Native American crafts. He said that if you wanted your dream catchers to work, then they had to be authentically made by Native Americans, Walmart wasn't going to cut it. The dream catchers here, created in every hue of the rainbow, are so authentic that they include a card that tells you the name of the Native American artist who made it. The prices were also at least half of what was being charged at the pow wows I have attended. This is the place to shop if you too are in love with Native American crafts.

One jewelry I really liked and is unique was a necklace of an antler and turquoise stone. The antlers are naturally shed and she cuts them into pieces to put the turquoise stone on. Also got some bracelets made with turquoise stones. There was only one left of the turquoise bracelet that I wanted but it was too tight. The owner graciously offered to make it bigger so it could fit. She let me try on the bracelet to make sure it was a size I wanted. The bracelets came with one charm of my picking. There were different kinds of charms including a tree, leaf, butterfly, and dragonfly. I appreciated the owner being willing to make a deal when I bought more than one of the same jewelry. My experience was one of the best customer service I have ever received. Definitely a must stop if you're in Maggie Valley!

I was able to find some more items elsewhere in town, but if you're not the kind to hunt around, this place may suffice. This place also has a large exhibit of baskets, woodwork, and other things, with pictures of the artists and an explanation of the traditions and techniques used. A must visit after the museum. Note: there was a truck selling "fry bread", typical of AZ and NM, and so we took a chance of some Cherokee style fry bread, as the person selling it called it. It's legit.
