Life in the upper part of Fremont could not exist were it not for Marketime. Marketime is part of the Ken's Markets chain of small neighborhood groceries that dot the northend here and there. Since buying it from the retiring owner a few years ago, Ken's has kept the flavor of the place the same and it has a very different vibe than even the nearest Ken's on Greenwood. Marketime has everything you could need in a pinch. If you just forewent the whole car thing and shopped exclusively at Marketime, you could live very well indeed. They may not have a wide selection, but they have a quality selection, especially of dairy, meat and produce. The staff is extremely helpful and they don't have a high turnover rate. If you can't find something, it pays to ask because there is a safe bet that they have it but that it's tucked away somewhere. read more

Love marketime for convenience. Girlfriend has ruled out other places to live based on proximity to marketime. Seafood and poultry have been surprisingly good, Produce has never let us down and they always have plenty of whatever ice cream the lady's into at the moment. I love that I can get whatever I need/forgot at other grocer while my oven preheats. Since the main attraction here is convenience I'd feel funny about giving it a five star review. I love MarketTime. I was on the bus on the way to school and I REALLY had to pee. It crept up on me big time. I mean, I had to pee so bad I got off the bus in the middle of my twenty minute ride downtown...I desperately began searching for a place. You know how it is (or maybe you don't?), not a lot of businesses will let you use their bathroom. But I walked in and asked them where it was and they told me, and I was so pleased/relieved. So that is why I initially loved them. Then, they had these sandwiches that looked really good. So I got one, along with some other stuff (like dog treats and a coconut-chocolate haystack thing), and trekked back to the bus stop. And the sandwich was ACE. Good sandwiches, nice staff, and I got to use their bathroom - this all equals five stars! Oh, and, from what I could tell, they had a good selection! I frequent Mark-up Time; sometimes a couple times a day. I used to frequent Ken's Mark-up on top of Queen Anne. This place has it all, and really, the prices aren't all that bad, especially considering it is just a few blocks from where I reside. The best thing about this store is the staff. They're awesome. They relate to my being high most of the time I'm in the store. Plus, they can make one paper sack hold more shit than a Honey Bucket. The next best thing is that you can buy a half a pie. I tend to restrict myself to only buy produce from Marketime. Everything else is way overpriced.. even on their special milk day (usually $3.69/gal) it's still cheaper to buy it from QFC (around $2.69/gal). If you forgot an important ingredient for your batch of cupcakes and you're desperate, they are conveniently close but you have to be willing to pay an arm and a leg. I was surprised at how nice their produce looks - I am definitely going to have to start buying more produce from here instead of my regular grocery store. I probably go to Markettime anywhere from 3-10 times a week. It's so convenient and close. Though it's bit pricier and has fewer options/sale items than the big chains like QFC or Safeway, which is entirely understandable for a small time market. They do have really great sandwiches and meals to go. But my favorite Markettime item of all times and my guilty pleasure are the black and white cookies they have at near the check-out counters. This place has been critical to my lunch on the way to work for years. I love it here - it is small and easy to get in and out of very quickly. The store clerks many of whom have been here for years are very personal and the very opposite of the Safeway staff who ask every time without a moment of sincerity "did you find everything okay?" Actual real people with real questions who don't feel like robots. Plus the soup bar here is fabulous! I liked one of their soups so much that one of the managers went out of his way to go photocopy the recipe for me and now I it is one of my favorites. They are not a full service shop but if you want to get in and out in under five minutes while rushing to not make it late to work this is the spot. Love ya Marketime!! read more

If you live in Fremont you've probably been to Market Time. It is a small grocery with almost everything you need at only slightly inflated prices. We pay more to not have to spend money on gas. Anyways, if you are ever at the Zoo and need a grocery store go to Market Time. I live in the neighborhood and often stop here for last minute dinner or for ingredients I've forgotten. They do a great job keeping the shelves stocked. Everything is going to be slightly more than the larger chains, but that's to be expected. I love their hot soups and grab-n-go meals, but have never found the hot meals next to the soups very appetizing. I love their wide selection of beer/wine/ciders for such a small store! Customer service is top notch, they'll never let the checkout line get long without opening another counter. The deli counter has good options even though they don't rotate the selection much. Lots of fresh veggies and fruit, and a great place to try a new and interesting product. They stock a lot of local, sustainable, different brands and I appreciate that! I venture to Marketime pretty frequently considering it is my neighborhood market, although I don't full out grocery shop here because some of the items are a bit overpriced. Don't get me wrong though, I love Marketime! Their produce, meat, fish, and deli are all reasonably priced and fresh. I have a soft spot in my heart for Marketime's roasted chicken. I usually get it when I'm too lazy to cook and don't feel like going to the various restaurants around upper Fremont. They also have a few pastry, donuts, and cookies around the front of the store. They are so delicious especially the half dipped chocolate chip cookie. Oh yeah and I have to mention that they have a great candy selection with multiple bins that contain "fun size" candy for $.10. Those bins get me every time! Also if you're looking for plain drip coffee, then get it from Marketime instead of going to Caffe Vita that's one block down (Sorry Caffe Vita!). This is the ultimate grocery store for single people. There are many small-portion items and ready-to-go bits. They don't have the selection of a larger store, but they do seem to have at least one of everything. Having said that, I've found a few must-have items there that are hard to find in other places. I love having this market a mere 3 blocks from my apartment. Yes, it's a little pricey, but the convenience of being able to walk to great food is worth the expense. Besides it being so close, I love that they actually have quality items such as Painted Hills Beef, organic everything, a great beer/wine/drinks selection, and the best part is that they have ALL the good Ben n' Jerry's flavors plus Bluebird and Full Tilt ice cream, not to mention Old School Custard. When I was a bored teenager living in the bland and desolate suburbs of Seattle, I dreamed of one day moving to the CITY. In my mind, I had an amazing apartment in a neighborhood that had everything I needed within walking distance. Also in the dream, I had the perfect roommate - a tame and affectionate grizzly bear named Cuddles. Well, you know what they say - if you can believe it, you can achieve it. I find myself at age 29 with something close to my dream life, not the least of which is my great apartment in upper Fremont mere blocks away from two of the best places in town: Paseo and Marketime. Marketime is the best grocery store ever. It doesn't have the selection of Safeway or the endless salad bar of Whole Foods, but it beats them both handily in all other aspects. It's almost always open when I need it (until 11pm every night for those near-midnight NyQuil and lemon custard runs), it's got almost everything my pseudo-bourgeoisie lifestyle demands (five dollar gourmet salsa... iced peach mate... turkey bacon...), and it has a surprisingly extensive selection of the things that are most important: produce, ice cream, and beer. The beer section is literally 1/8 the size of the whole store and if not for the chilly temps I could stay back there for hours looking through all their varieties. There's always a good sale on basics, and they stock a good combination of name brand and gourmet food and household products. The best part is the case right up front of ready-made sandwiches and entrees for lazy... er, busy people like me. Cobb sandwich #1! The prices aren't Costco-low, but you don't have to buy sixteen pounds of what you're getting at once, either. There's always a parking spot in the lot if I'm stopping by on my way home from work, and the employees here are totally great (and, coincidentally, all extremely attractive in their own unique ways). Sometimes, they're even playing ZZ Top. I like this place so much that the thought of being without it has actually kept me from moving more than once. Five stars, Marketime... see you after work. For $4.09 per pound I can indulge my addiction to yogurt covered pretzels in the small bulk section here. Bin #947. Near the back, by the produce. Details are for authenticity and so anyone else sharing my addiction can home in easily on their fix. Oh. That's just me? Fine. This market has become my "go-to" place three work days out of five. One day is reserved for Paseo and the other day is when I guilt myself into bringing something from home for lunch. They have sandwiches and salads and take-out/heat up meals here and everything else a small grocery store usually has. I wouldn't do all my grocery shopping here, but when I realize at lunch time that I need baby carrots and mushrooms for dinner, I pick them up here for reasonable prices and because they're fresh. The bagel, lox and cream cheese sandwich is decent, the pasta salads really good, and the raspberry bran bars in the serve yourself bin near the checkout counters are amazing. They're next in line of addiction right after the pretzels. People are generally friendly and I like the old fashioned feel of a small neighborhood market with bins of flowers outside the front door. I love this small, independent grocery store in Fremont. The staff are always more than eager to help and very friendly. The prepared food you find here is the best around and the beer selection is very extensive. I find little hidden gems to try almost every time I visit! North Fremont is lucky to have Marketime Foods. Fremont is really limited in terms of grocery stores. There are times when you need things that PCC just does not have and that's where Marketime Foods comes in. Despite the outside appearance, it's quite a large space and they really pack in a lot of foods, beverages, and other items with the space that they have. They especially have a large beer and wine selection. Prices for everything are reasonable. There's also a $5 off $30 coupon in the Chinook book. It's definitely worth checking out if you're local, especially given the recent growth of the neighborhood with new restaurants and shops (Hunger, Uneeda Burger, Dot's Deli, and more like old favorite Paseo's. I still like Ballard Town & Country more, but Marketime Foods is closer than BT&C and Fred Meyer's in Ballard. read more

I stopped by here one night for the first time, after going to the gym because I had a coupon from my Chinook Book for the place. I wanted a salad and checked out their pre-made salads at the deli. (The deli was closed by this time.) Besides being overpriced, they were OLD. Like, I flipped them over and there was lettuce slime on the bottom. Gross. No salad for me. I also wanted some hummus since I was feeling lazy and not feeling like making my own, so I picked up a tub from an Oregon company. I get it home, open it up and it was seriously the worst hummus I had ever tasted. I don't think it had anything to do with the company that made it either. It was just old and EXPIRED. I'm one of those people that always checks the date of something before I even put it in my cart. I didn't notice until I got home though that a sticker with a more recent date was put on TOP of the original one, it had expired a month ago. I would have taken it back but for four bucks, it really isn't worth my time and effort. I just know I won't be shopping here again unless it's absolutely necessary and it's for non-perishable items. I'm sticking to PCC. I like the idea that this is a locally-owned market but shady tactics like that don't fly with me. The staff was courteous and it is a cute little store. A bit overpriced though. Did have a very decent wine selection. Their produce selection though leaves much to be desired and no organic options. read more
