Markleeville is a gem and so is this charming general store. I stopped by on my way to the Woollystar Music Festival. Super friendly staff. The rustic vibes made me feel like I had stepped back in time. They carry a lot of essentials you'd need for a weekend in a cabin or camping beneath the stars, and they have a surprisingly good selection of alcohol. Best of luck to the new owners! read more

Headed out for a nice sunny backroads drive before the weather turns and Monitor Pass will close. Passing through Markleeville, I wanted to pick up a few snacks and road food and drinks and the General Store here is just the place as I pull into Markleeville. Parking is easy, right in front of the store. It's all organized and clean inside but still has they old timey feel. Sure, the prices are higher than Walmart for a bag of Doritos, but look where you are! Service was friendly and he asked where I was headed. Over Monitor Pass, I replied. This is about the last chance to get over to the other side. Yep. Off I go with my munchies and plenty of gas. The gas prices here in Markleeville will kill you! I love this store! They are so friendly here and have some really neat items! I was excited about the local handmade jewelry and much more! They had a nice selection of fishing gear and it was fun to see all the good catch photos on the wall and where they were caught! Definitely worth the stop and instead of just grabbing our energy drinks and leaving, we had a nice time going through the store and seeing all the fun and unique items they had to offer! I give this sweet spot in Markleeville high scores all around! Clean, friendly atmosphere. A nostalgic hit of the past, minus the dust! haha! Not only did I find an incredible selection of my favorite beverages and munchies, but I was also able to buy some cute gifts for the family, and managed to find a unique artisan-made turquoise necklace for myself! I was suprised by the array of items they carried, seems like they had something for everyone. Next time I return to Woollystar I will definitely hit this place up! read more

Markleeville (population 210) is a cute little Sierra Nevada town that I've passed through either on my way back to the Bay Area (via Highway 4) or for a visit to Grover Hot Springs. Markleeville also hosts an annual bicycle ride called the Death Ride. The route goes over five passes for a total distance of 129 miles and over 15,000 feet of elevation gain. This town is also the Alpine County Seat, so watch the speed and the alcohol as there's usually a clear law enforcement presence here. Markleeville traces its beginnings to the land claim of Jacob Marklee who established a toll bridge across a tributary of the Carson River in 1861 during the height of the silver mining boom at nearby Silver Mountain City. He recorded his land claim of 160 acres in 1862, in Douglas County, Nevada. However a subsequent boundary survey put his claim was in California. During the rush to the Comstock Lode, the town of Markleeville was built upon Marklee's land. Marklee hoped to prosper from the freight and supplies headed to the mining camps, but was instead killed in a gunfight in 1863, his killer going free on a plea of self defense. When the mines shut down, Markleeville assumed the county seat. The Alpine County Courthouse now occupies the site of Marklee's cabin. The Markleville General Store has been a welcome stop along whatever route I have been taking. That usually involves soft drinks, beer (for later), snacks, and using the handy ATM. There's also an antique selection and perhaps a fun conversation while you're creaking along inside. I like the old rustic vibe and perhaps the only thing missing is 2 guys on the porch "Picking and Grinning". There's also a small surrounding "downtown" area that's worth hanging around for. read more

Very well stocked for such a tiny store. Somehow they manage to have most of the basics including even a tiny refrigerated section with carrots, meats etc. No other produce other than what can go into the refrigerated section. And yes, you'll likely pay above average prices. Place can get really crowded with people looking to stock up with food for camping or their cabins. They have a decent selection of alcohol. yes, I count that as one of the basics. read more

No, it's not Walmart prices, you idiot, you're in the middle of nowhere and you are paying not only for the item you need, but for the transportation to get it to the middle of nowhere. I agree with all other comments, this place gives you the true small, rural town vibe. AND it takes cards! If you forgot something from home, you'll be able to find it. Firewood? Check. Suds? Check Check. Cool "old guy" hats with Markleeville printed on the front to flaunt to your loser friends that didn't go on the fishing trip? CHECK! Granted you will be paying a premium price, but when you are where you are, you don't have much of a choice. But your dollar is going to a good cause: supporting local, small town, establishments. Don't you just love these little stores that have just about anything you could need on a hot summer or cold winter day? Climb the stairs and enter the cool dimness to be greeted by the little dog who welcomes one and all. Do you need ice for your cooler or an ice cream for your children? You can get that and alot more including an antique commode. Yep folks, general means general, and you can shop for antiques and then select your favorite adult beverage. One comment though on a previous review that directs you to a different store down the road...which earned one star from that same reviewer. Thankful they are there! The information center of town and the store that truly has it all! I was surprised to see that the prices were actually less than the closest Raley's 40 minutes away. The customer service was excellent as usual and they have a wine room and awesome beer selection! Looking forward to the Christmas tree permits and Fall drives. It has been a beautiful summer of camping and fishing in the area and the hiking is amazing, and of course a soak in the hot springs nearby. I am glad they have swim shorts and towels since I forgot mine! This is the most reliable business in town. read more

Just a small old general store in the middle of nowhere. But that nowhere is the most beautiful area in California, the backside Alps. It is so nice to be driving along, hungry, thirsty, hot, sweaty and see this little gem coming up in the distance. So welcome. So old. So rustic. Be careful about drinking beer and getting into your car with alcohol, the store is right next to the courthouse. No mercy either. read more

The Markleeville General Store, has been a long time favorite of our family to stop in and visit with Bob and Dee, now that they have passed on their daughter is running it and she is doing a great job carrying on the family tradition of happy friendly customer service. You can find here anything that a 'general store' would have back in the olden days, from eggs in the full grocery area to a quart of oil or pepto bismol. They have a great selection of gifts and antiques as well as hot coffee and their prices aren't bad either. We have been coming for years and will continue to do so. Our stop always includes ice, firewood, ice cream and fishing supplies. I would encourage everyone to stop in and check it out, stay a while and enjoy an ice cream on the front porch! They have the only ATM for $ for the hot springs too. and the previous writer is correct they do take credit cards! read more

The markleeville General Store is the place to be if you are in need of anything! I mean anything! They are amazingly well stocked and the owners are people you can stay and talk to forever. Very kind and helpful. They make our anual trip worth going on every year. Fishing and hiking and camping are what we go for. Annie their dog will greet you with a howl and a smile! They have done a great job in there store, a real old general store and they have an ATM and they aren't over priced at all. I highly recommend this store for any fishing and camping gear, license, ice, beer, GREAT WINE selection! and full grocery. They even have christmas tree permits for $10 bucks! read more
