I wandered in yesterday as part of my short afternoon road trip from Genoa. On first glace, this is a California Lottery Business, that has a gift shop, light groceries, and a Deli on the side. I don't think there is another Lottery location for miles, as I've driven past a few times to see a line out the door. What I saw inside were 2 significant lines - one for the CA Lottery Machine and one at a dedicated counter. A few tables were then occupied by folks scratching away. There is a separate gift shop room that is very nice and they do sell branded clothing in the main room. And even with the Lottery traffic, it seemed pretty easy to buy a sandwich at the Deli and have a seat. The folks here also seemed very pleasant and organized. Tip: While you're in the area, drive on down the road and pay a visit to the very cool Markleeville General Store. read more

Asking me to rate my experience is peculiar. I went in and bought a lottery ticket. I paid cash. Asking me to rate my experience actually hit me like a ton of bricks. I know that very little that we do is private, and I know we are tracked, but to know that me driving out to Woodfords to get a lottery ticket and the internet accessing my location via GPS (of course, I had my cell with me!) and then actually asking about my experience? This makes me sick. But I have to say, I've been out there numerous times and everybody's having a good time. The restaurant is cookin' busy and the people are happy. The place itself is spotless. But mostly, what I think is the star of the show is their employees. Every person I have interacted with has been just awesome. Always smiling, kind and patient, and they don't mind answering questions. So despite the fact that I think it sucks that I was tracked and asked, I don't mind saying that I like the place a lot. read more

I was looking around Markleeville for a place to eat on a Tuesday and the lady at the general store directed me here. Good food, good people, this place has almost everything you can think of besides food. Two little old ladies enjoying their meal next to me were talking about dove season opening day and made me wish I grew up in this area. We stopped in here for some lottery tickets and decided to have breakfast. I ordered the breakfast burrito and it did not disappoint. I would definitely recommend trying it. My husband had a sandwich and it was huge. He could only eat half. We love the girls who work here, too. We go at least one a month just to have food! read more

Apparently, if you're a tight-assed bicyclist from the Bay Area you won't like this place. Unfortunately, they keep heading back up this hill... and doing as much destruction to the area as the recent fire. Not physically of course, but their better-than-thou attitude puts a real stink in the air. Since the Bay Area is downhill from here, they can get out of town even faster than they came in. OK folks here we go on anthoer rip off junction! I found myself stranded by the highway on a hot Sunday afternoon my car had just blown a radiator and I needed to use the phone. I found a sign that said phone at Woodfords Station a few clicks down the road. Having lived in the area I walked down to use the phone. I walked in and of course do you think these people would even say hello to you? hell no I asked for some change to use the phone, sorry no phone i was told by Dave Kirby the fat ass that owns the place. He said he had the phone torn out years ago because he was tired of having to stock quarters for folks to use the phone. He stated that I could drive two miles down the highway to get a cell signal. Again I told him that i had no car was stuck here and needed to call a local friend to pick me up. I asked if I could use his personal phone and that I would pay for the call. No I was told that if he did that for everyone he would have a line out the door and wouldn't be able to sell any of his needless marked up retail items. Are you kidding me? if you need ice, beer, a soda or camping supplies, keep driving about 20 mins you will run into a town called Gardnerville they have a better selection and actual want your business. I will never step another foot in this crap again. Dont believe the early reviews on this place it sucks and is a rip off. I have had the pie it tastes old, the last time I was in the store I witnessed a rat run across the street to the restaurant in the back. Not a good place to eat. I say keep driving ! read more

The fake newspaper at the Deli counter talks about how Woodfords has been around so long, it's burned three times. Since the late 1800's, actually, when it was the last stop for traveling folks and their horses to rest up before heading over the pass. Dave and Lynda, who have obviously been running Woodfords for as long as they've been alive, make sandwhiches to order fresh and pies every day. Today's was cherry pie. What's really fabulous about Woodford's is how it's what you crave on the Diamond Valley Loop when road cycling. It was heaven today for lunch time. Don't stay stupid stuff or act like an idiot, or they'll treat you accordingly. This is small town, one store really to the whole place, and dumbness is not tolerated. Locals are local and everyone else is plainly and clearly not. There's probably a sign on the wall somewhere to tell you that. read more

For everyone that hasn't seen the new and improved Woodfords Station it's under Brand New Owners it is now called the Mad Dog Cafe. Yes they cater to runners, bike riders and anyone else that happens to stop in and visit . Henry the stores Mascot is a sweet gentle golden lab and loves the attention he gets.Hot or cold sandwiches are sold and fresh baked goods are also available so if you haven't already stopped by this year give it a try you won't be unhappy . read more

This place is under new (ish) ownership, the current owner has had the place for about a year and a half. She is always kind when we stop in. She keeps the place clean and cute. Sometimes the kids and I stop there in the summer on our way home from playing at the river. read more

Stopped here today after a 10 mile bike ride to use the restroom (which had about 10 Death Ride posters in it) I bought two beverages to be polite, and asked "who's the death rider here?" The woman ringing me up (who grumpily yelled "wait, wait" as I tried to swipe my card too soon, and grumbled "everyone's in a hurry") said "there is no death rider...we hate them, they come thru here every year" I left thinking, Wow, then how come you even run a business, as they probably bring in quite a bit of revenue that day to your store! I too, will most likely not patronize this place again...I would rather spend my money where people actually want my business! read more

This place is terrible... The young man with zero personality made us the worse sandwiches with stale bread. For two awful sandwiches, bag of chips, three waters and four beers $53. I wanted to exchange my lottery ticket but the young man was entering $160 worth of powerball one at a time.. Never will I ever stop at this place again. read more

The new owners are Ok. The wife Lisa is really nice, and the gals that serve the food, but the husband thinks he is being nice, but he has an edge to him that comes off as rude....I hope he reads this and changes his approach to the customers. And lowers some of the store prices (drinks and stuff) because they are a bit high even for a convenience stop. read more

Yes, Dave is a man with an opinion, as is everyone, and after 27 years of getting people of ALL sorts in that store, which is his life and livelihood, he has a right to it. I personally have seen him use tact and kindness whenever he could and have also seen him get ripped off as a result of that kindness. So, before you pass judgment and refer to a person as a "fat as s"(potty mouth Tim H.), relax. Put yourself in someone else's shoes for a minute. You could be treated the same almost anywhere in this fine country, and that is the beauty of that. His exacting standards assured you fresh food, his wife's wonderful cooking and a nice long bench out front to sit a spell if you choose to do so, although I see that particular point was lost on the bicyclist. Dave does not "hate" anyone and as is also offered on this site, more than one person from the area, his Bread and Butter if you will, Love the Dave and his wife Lynda. Yes, Woodford's Station is no more, at least not the ambiance of Dave and Lynda. Yes, their rent was to be raised by over 200% by the new owner of the building so Mr. and Mrs. Kirby were treated shabbily and given 30 days to get out. "Could only get better" (Mike B.)? We shall see what you think is better about this place when someone moves in and turns a piece of Americana (the southernmost pass over the Sierra Nevada's, the earliest of the building's that currently housed Woodford's Station was the last stop for the Pony Express before the rider headed over said pass) into a $5.00 cup of coffee I respected the Kirby's perseverance and the comfort of always finding the same faces we saw when my husband and I would go up to fish the many lakes and streams in the area.
