Markoff's was a big disappointment. It had been about 20 years since I last went to a haunted house/forest and I had heard good things about Markoff's, so I was excited to visit. I found the Midway boring, the Town small, the Trail extensive but not very scary/surprising, and the prices outrageous. Markoff's charged $70 for a Town + Trail combo ticket. Ok, fine, for a unique experience I paid it. I don't think it's terrible compared to concerts, Renn Fest, and other experiences. But I thought the overall quality would be higher. At the Midway, I expected more entertainment and activities. Compared to a Renn Fest, which has tons of shows and activities going on, there is almost nothing at the Markoff's Midway. There were a few food stands (tacos, nachos, and pupusas; cotton candy; donuts; waffles; cotton candy; smores), one bar, a merch store, a small art store, face painting, a zip line, and a log rolling activity. The only entertainment I saw was a pretty tame fire dancer at one point. They played DJ music but song choices were often odd, like Elton John (doesn't say "Haunted Forest" to me). Everything cost more money to do. Beer was an outrageous $15. Tacos $8 for one (but did get good reviews from my friends). Lines were long because they only had one person checking IDs and one cashier, and no one had any hustle. Overall, it was boring. I did the Town first. You wait in a line to be driven in a group to the town. The ride there didn't have any decorations or scares which was a missed opportunity. The Town itself was a fairly basic path in and out of some rooms. Some of the decorations were neat. There were some attempted scares and surprises, but this heavily depends on where you are in your group and if you are close to the group ahead of you -- either people in your own group or the next group can spoil the scare/surprise. There were some actors and some dummies and animatronics. Actors were okay but some were overacting high schoolers. It was pretty short. My immediate reaction was, "That's it?" The Trail was much longer and more substantial than the Town. It is clear this is the main event. It was very long and winding, had lots of different themed areas, and lots of props, decor, animatronics, and actors. But everything felt a little low quality. Many of the themes were old timey, like a crypt; I would have liked a few more modern horror settings like a morgue or hospital. Some of my favorite decor was some old cars near the end because they felt more real than other area. I also would have liked some longer, more involved themed areas; instead, the themes felt short and shallow. Like, give me a whole haunted church to explore instead of just one room. They could also have more creative scares/surprises, like with people above you or below you. Scares/surprises could have been good if not often ruined by people ahead. I'm glad I gave it a shot but I don't recommend it. I would read reviews carefully before doing another haunted house/forest. read more

I love the haunted forest. It's fun every year. Recently, they've added a couple lights on nights. These are great for families. My 12 year old isn't quite ready for the real fun, but lights on gives her a chance to get used it. My favorite Markoff's event, though, is their new Christmas trail and village. If you have the chance to go, you must! It's a wonderful representation of various Christmas traditions. I can't recommend it enough! read more

As a haunted house afficianado, I can honestly say this is the best haunt I've ever been to. The permanent structures and props are impressive (because they are not props). When is the last time you walked under an active, ancient working ferris wheel packed with clown corpses? Or a post-apocalyptic boneyard complete with an airplane crash and dubstep DJ? Imagine sitting around the largest bonfire you've ever seen (there are three of them) watching people attempt to cross a high ropes course ninja warrior style rolling death log 50 feet up, then strolling through a carnival, hell, castle, church, expansive cemetery, bayou, viking village, dinosaur bones, wood shacks, alien spaceship and more (the continuity makes absolutely no sense but it's cool). Lots of neat animatronics. The alien that spun around and said, "anal probe." DEAD. My only "complaint" is that some of the skeletons littered about are a bit small and there was an absolutely atrocious heart prop an actor in the town was showing off that didn't even have proper coronary arteries. But these are niche healthcare worker quips the majority of attendees wouldn't notice. If you're limited in budget, stick with the trail. The town is ok, but not as expansive (and it smells like gasoline). Go earlier for less wait time. We went at 7 pm the Friday before Halloween. read more

$7 for a cotton candy is insane! Too expensive to enjoy any food in the central hub. We held it for dinner at Sheetz The visuals of the trail are great - when the effects are working and the lighting to see them is working. I was there before the crowds on Saturday. They were pushing people through too quickly. We (a party of 5) walked in a group of about 25 people. The kids behind us talked the entire time - naming what was coming up next and identifying actors by name. They should have been corrected or removed by staff. They ruined the experience. Visited two years ago - the experience was better - 5starts. Perhaps just a bad night. I will give it one more shot. I'll be sure to eat before I go! read more

This is by far the best haunt in our neck of the woods. Actually, I think this one surpasses Universal HHN imho. The lines are minimal because they have entry times. Instead of waiting in line you're wandering around giant bonfires, taking pictures at photo spots, enjoying fire spinning entertainment and a DJ booth among food and drink vendors. I'm always raving about the static haunt structures. I don't want to do spoilers but the structures are incredible. The scare actors are always amazing. Everyone we drag here annually always make plans to come back. I can't recommend enough. read more

Going to Markoff's is my favorite time of the fall season. It's been a tradition to go each year since I moved here in 2014 and I'll always come back year after year. I've never done The Town, only the trail (I've heard The Town isn't as good so I just stick with the trail). There are a couple parts on the trail that remain the same each year but they're incredible so I always look forward to them. Otherwise there are parts on the trail that are different year to year, so you get some variety. I'm always amazed at the intense level of commitment to detail and everything is unbelievably realistic. I'm not too easily spooked but some of the jump scares from the scareactors are impressive and legitimately freak me out! I definitely recommend going with a group of at least 4 (but more is always better!), make sure to dress warm enough, and be prepared for some minor hiking. The trail can be pretty uneven as it does go through an actual forest, so be aware of that for anyone in your party who might have trouble with balance. Also be sure to leave yourself some time either before or after your trail time to check out the grounds! There's plenty of places to eat, get fun snacks (like a s'mores kit with a marshmallow roasting area!), and grab a drink (alcoholic or non), and a few cool activities too. Reception is pretty poor out there so put that phone away and enjoy the spooky! read more

What a fantastic spooky season experience! The production of this place was impressive and it made for a fun and entertaining experience for our group! Be ready to put in a couple of hours when you get here. There's lots of walking and bump terrain as you walk around the forest. Remember it's dark and so if you're not steady on your feet, it may not be the best experience. We had a group of 8 who were of various ages and we all had an awesome time. They have an area that you gather in with foods and drinks for you to pass the time before and after your forest experience. We did the town and forest pass and enjoyed both. The town experience is a haunted town that you're transported to by shuttle pulled by a tractor. Wear stable shoes. I'd suggest hiking boots or sneakers with treads. Don't carry too much with you. You don't need it and since it's so dark you won't want to lose it. Have a blast! read more

I'm a connoisseur of all things haunted and this is by far the best one I've ever been to. I've been multiple years in a row but I hadn't been since pre-Covid and was blown away by all of the updates, from food and drink, to activities (trail and town). The actors were top notch. Two suggestions, bring back the headless horsemen and the crazy clowns at the end. It was a great way to finish. Lastly, please please upgrade the porta potties, they were truly disgusting and as u walk in and leave, you smell piss. Which isn't a great send off after such an incredible experience. read more

The sets in the forest were certainly amazing. It was so much fun to hang out there in the middle with the food, drinks, the music was great. It just wasn't scary enough. The actors were pretty tame and kind of boring. They didn't really make much, if any, attempt to make you actually jump and scream. They just kind of casual walked up to you, or slowly 'jumped' out from a corner, or just stood there as you walked by. Literally the only thing that made me "jump" was a surprise blast of air on my feet while walking through one of the sets. The Town was much better in that regard, but not by much, and again, didn't jump out from nowhere or yell and scare us at all. read more

We've been going to Markoff's haunted forest for a few years now and every year is good. But this year it's outstanding. The actors are really giving it their all. The set pieces and buildings are elaborate and immersive. It always helps to go with a few friends who really get scared, so you get the maximum experience. And they do an excellent job of spreading out the groups to ensure you enjoy the full experience. Would recommend to any haunted forest or haunted house fan! read more

It's a great trail. We've been doing haunted trails for a while now, and this one is up there as one of the best. The special effects are great, and you can tell that the actors are really trying and spot on with staying in character. What I appreciate more than anything is the consideration to crowd control throughout the trail. Making sure the line isn't backed up is key in making sure everyone gets their scare on. I can't stand spending a ton of money only to get stuck behind a line within a haunted trail. That sucks! But, luckily not the case here. If they keep that up, then it'll continue to be one of the best. Another thing worth noting is that there is so much more to do there. There's a psychic reading, waffles, donuts, tacos, burgers, fries cotton candy, a bar, and more! There are also games such as zip lining, walking along a rolling log, a slingshot game and more. The vibe is similar to a fair, but with a little more spookiness. Good stuff! read more

Waited 2 hours past our appointment time (scheduled time 10-10:30 pm waited til 12:15 am) for a half hour of fun. Also parking lot closes at 9:00 pm so if you have a late appointment you have to show up super early anyway. Don't get me wrong there is plenty of stuff to do while you wait. For example, pay $15 for a beer, cider, or wine and $14 for a plain waffle. Negatives aside, the trail is very good with plenty of scares and the bonfires are pleasant to sit next to. There are some activities and they were doing a bake sale that night with good prices on treats ($5 a bag of cookies, candy, trail mix, etc and at the end of the night it was $1). Obviously it was Halloween night so it was packed, but still not overcrowded. I enjoyed my time because my friends are great to be around, but other than that too much waiting. read more

I felt compelled to write a review because of how amazing this year's haunted trail was. I brought my parents to Markhoff's Haunted Forest for the first time a few years back and the first thing they requested when they were coming to town this year was to go again. We only did the trail, but were BLOWN AWAY by the production value and money that clearly went into every single area. This year's trail was the best one yet! The number of structures that were erected to walk through, the numerous themes, and the number of actors and volunteers sets Markhoff's apart. Shout out to all the actors and workers who made it such a memorable time with my family. My one wish (which Markhoff's has no control over) is that White's Ferry opens back up, or a bridge is built in its place. Having to go east towards DC or east towards Lovettsville, VA just to get to Maryland in 2025, when the population is 100x what it was 20 years ago, is just wild. read more

The forest, the production, the costumes, everything. It was a long wait for us to get on the actual trail but lots of fun things to do while we waited. Our group of 7 women, in our 50s and 60s, had a blast. We went into "The Town" and, while it wasn't terrifying, it had enough scary to satisfy our purpose. The bonfires were awesome! We were very impressed. The reason I gave 4stars, instead of 5, is because the price of the food was too high. Most in our group didn't eat, but I was starving, so had a cheese burger. I've attended Markoff's Haunted Forest for three years in a row, and each time I'm amazed by the dedication to detail that goes into the trail. The actors are incredible, really bringing the experience to life, and the staff is always friendly and helpful. This year, however, the price was a bit of a downside. It seems like the cost goes up every year, and the forest and town combo felt a little steep. I understand that it's for a good cause, so I can accept that, but what really surprised me was the $19 price tag for a cheeseburger--especially considering it was just bread, a thin patty, and a slice of cheese. One suggestion I have is that those who pay for the forest/town combo should receive a discount on food, while visitors who are just hanging out in the village could pay full price. Since ticket holders already have wristbands or stickers, it would be easy to apply the discount. Just my two cents. Overall, though, it was a fantastic time, and I'm already looking forward to next year! read more

The Forrest and the town was super fun and super scary! I enjoyed the effort the actors put into making the haunted house scary. My group really enjoyed themselves. I will have to say what I appreciated the most was the multiple bonfires because he kept the food area warm! It was so freezing but we didn't feel it because of the heat from the bonfire. The only thing I was disappointed about was that the s'mores ended earlier than I was told. I was told they were be done at 11:30 and I arrived to the booth at 10 to find there was no one there selling s'mores. Other than that everything else was great. read more

Markoffs gets better and better every year. The crew puts in so much effort and it shows. It's creepy without being terrifying (to me, at least). We did the town and haunted forest on a Sunday night. The town was good but I'm not sure if it was really worth the extra $$. We got through it in about 20 minutes. The town could've used a story line of some sort. The haunted forest, their bread and butter, was the highlight. It was so well done on all accounts. We also enjoyed hanging out around the bonfires before entering. My only complaint is that we bought our tickets for 9:30pm but weren't called in until 11pm, on a Sunday. We didn't realize we'd be waiting a full 1.5 hours past our ticket time to get in. Plenty of parking available. We came here toward the end of the Halloween season, and this was definitely a nice touch of spookiness. When we arrived, we were ushered into the park area, where they had food, alcohol, gorgeous displays of spooky/colorful lights (check the picture), and a massive bonfire that would occasionally spur ashes. The huge fire and décor was one of my highlights of this trip. There were also some actors wandering around to spook people. It wasn't as crowded as my friends (who had been going here for the past 10+ years) said it normally was. This is possibly due to the staggered timing they had implemented. I love this staggered timing actually since we did not have to wait that long for us to actually go through the walkthrough/maze. The ticket we had purchased allowed us to enter both the maze and to also do a mini hayride to the village that underwent radiation poisoning. Regarding the first part, I would say this was the main highlight of the night for me. All of the effort they put in creating a tilted building, floating laser lights, and a portion that was spiraling was Hollywood-like. I enjoyed looking at all of the work they put into creating the decor. This portion was also the scariest portion of the night. There was a group in front of us and behind us, so we couldn't really enjoy all of the fine details. A few people in my group has some good screams (and I caused one of them too ;) haha). This year it was the longest trait they've had in their 29 year history because they combined both Trail 1 and Trail 2. Bring some flats not heels, even if it's date night time! Regarding the Town this year, according to my friends, was disappointing and not as scary as usual. In the past, they would sometimes throw you down a slide and separate you from the group. No one was separated from out group and there was no slide this time. I love the storyline of the radiation poisoning and how interactive the actors were, but I wish they had separated us to create more of that spooky scare! There were very few actors in the corn maze portion. These Halloween Haunts/scares don't really scare me, to be honest, but I enjoy the atmosphere and seeing others get scared! The actors definitely prey on those who seem to be frightened, while I had a blast challenging them and pseudo-befriending them! read more

My friends and I came here on the weekend before Halloween this year. (I know, I'm writing this review a bit late...) We really enjoyed The Trail - it was filled with cool scary decorations, and the scare actors did an excellent job at setting the mood. The Trail had many different sections that you walk through, each with a different spooky theme (think haunted house, aliens, chainsaws in woods, etc). It is also entirely outdoors, so make sure to dress in warm clothing and layers! Now for the negatives of our visit... We purchased tickets to enter The Trail at 10pm, but we did not get a chance to go in until after midnight. No matter what time your tickets were purchased for, when you arrive, they give you wristbands with a number on them, and they just pick the next number they have. So if you have tickets to 10pm but arrive very early, you would get an earlier number and potentially be able to enter The Trail earlier than 10pm. My group arrived just before 9pm, more than an entire hour before our scheduled entry time of 10pm, yet we were not allowed to enter The Trail until after midnight. We spent over three hours waiting in the "free" Halloween Town area. This area was filled with stands selling very expensive food, drinks, or art. There were also some nice large bonfires where we could warm up. And there were a few different activities you could do for an additional cost: zipline, axe throwing, or walk across a balance beam in the air. We browsed through everything and watched other groups do some of the paid activities but didn't try any ourselves. The decor here is nice too, but it definitely got boring after waiting for over three hours. I strongly recommend that if you visit, you arrive very early. Much earlier than whatever time your ticket states. For next year, I would hope that the organizers of this event structure it better so that people can actually enter at the time they purchased tickets for. read more

Way better than I expected. The actual forest walk was great; I wouldn't have minded a little bit longer. They are letting groups of 6 go at a time during the pandemic. It's actually perfect because workers get to reset into spooking position before the next group comes through. The wait to actually go was quit long though. Five to ten minutes or each group of numbers called, so you could be waiting 1 to 1.5 hours before starting you walk. Having alcohol during the waiting period would have alleviated the boredom. read more

Last time I went was about 16 years ago. It was much scarier then. Reason being there are too many tickets sold and groups are running into each other. When the group right in front of you screams you know its coming. Kind of ruined it for me. I wanted to be scared but only jumped twice all night and that was to animated attractions, not humans. Regarding the live attractions, I either knew they were there due to front groups reaction or I could see them. Also years ago you came walking up the trail towards a field and knew you were almost out and then guys with chain saws would come running after you. Now you walk in a little cabin and guys have chain saws and just gesture them towards you. Not scary and it smells of gas engine fumes in there. Besides you hear the chain saws before you walk in because the group before you is there. Sadly I will have to stop recommending this Haunt. read more

This has been for 5+ years now an annual tradition in my family. Each year my oldest kids (up to 3 of the 8 now) each pick 2 friends they want to bring to a scary, heart-pounding adventure. We do love it. There is only one thing I would tweak if I had my druthers, and I'm not sure it's possible considering how many people want to take part in this really great adventure. However, it would be even more fun if somehow they could separate the groups walking down the paths by larger distances. Without fail, every year, we are held up by the group in front of us. There are signs and people telling you to keep up the pace, and they also tell you that if you keep catching up to a group to ask nicely to pass them (like playing through in a round of golf). While this is a very reasonable strategy, the groups are often teenagers unaccompanied by an adult and having too much fun to pay attention to reasonable social expectations. This year we asked multiple times at various "scare stations" if we could please go through so we could move faster. Virtually every scare opportunity was spoiled because no matter how slow we went the group in front of us would always wait and hesitate so long that by the time they were ready to enter it was only because we were asking if we could pass them. Perhaps they can station some spooky guides along the route to pay attention to this sort of situation and basically make a top down decision on whether one group out to let another group pass. This may take some of the difficulty and confusion out of the equation. In any case, we love Markoff's Haunted Forest. Unlike some other local places, It's very hands on and authentically scary. They do everything they can to make the experience fun and frightening. We love what they do and will continue to return, but it could be made to be even more exciting for all of their guests by coming up with some solutions to group crowding on the trail. The actors are allowed to gently tap guests, but guests are NOT allowed to touch them. The actors engagement made the experience scarier. We went this past Saturday (Oct 5th) and had the best time! My husband and I went before we had children several years ago, and this time took our 9 and 11 yr old girls! We were able to snag tickets at 50% off through a discount website which made the price much cheaper and brought our tickets down to $30/pp vs $60. The details on the trail are out of this world incredible and the actors all did their job well! We didn't eat on premises because we went to a restaurant beforehand, so I can't speak of the pricing for that. However, we were interested in buying T-shirts but $35 a pop was a little absurd (this isn't Disney...) so we passed. Our kiddos were by far the youngest there (that we saw), but are very knowledgeable about theater and stage productions and fully understand it's just a show, so they had no issues. In general though for most kids, I would say the recommended 12+ should be followed. Absolutely none of their friends would've been able to handle it. All in all we had a fantastic time and something we will do again. Getting there early is key and the earlier you go in the season, will also help as far as crowds are concerned. read more

Poor customer service and way over priced! The only reason I came to this location is because an employee gave me a discount code to use. I get to the counter and get lied to, told 2 different things. One person told me "oh that code only worked the first week." The second person, a man, who I assumed was a manager or owner told me "oh that never worked that's something our employees made up." I asked if there was any other additional discounts because I drove 2 hours for this and thought $50 for the town was EXTREMELY high, he said "I know it's not your fault but I can't help you" of course it's not my fault it's YOURS because your employees were doing something illegal and morally wrong. Yet me not knowing any better, had to suffer. Against my will because the rest of the people in my group were extremely upset that was drove all the way there, decided to bite the bullet and pay $50 each to do the town. Let me tell you, ITS NOT WORTH $50, maybe $25 at best. Looks like something I could have made in my backyard and it's not scary at all. All Markoff's cares about is making money, not quality or customer service. Do yourself a favor and skip out. You'll regret it if you go and waste money. If anything I think they owe me a refund for such a terrible experience. read more

I know I'm late but writing this review based on my first time experience last year (Oct 2022). I only have three complaints. 1. More signs and lights on the road leading up to the haunt. Additionally, at the front entrance. Almost got lost and went towards the right instead of left. We were coming from Waldorf MD far far away so didnt know our way even with GPS. Plus, GPS was spotty at times so signs wouldve helped. 2. The lines was extremely long even after purchasing tickets. You still had to wait like hoursssss passed the time you purchased the tickets for. Please fix this!!!!!Maybe cut down on the availability of tickets, extend the haunt longer, add more stands/activities, open extra hours for the amount of tickets sold, & more staff to help with the flow of traffic/concession stands. 3. Spacing. Lots more spacing between groups please I beg of you. This is where alot of haunted attractions fail at. We found our selves catching up with the group infront of us and seen the acts before we got a chance to experience them. A waist of time, money, and fun for our group. Maybe have a timer for each group with staff monitoring with cameras (hidden cameras) throughout the haunt or put some staff members walking the haunt discreetly or way back farther from the woods but can still communicate the flow of the haunt to other staff members to allow the next group or not. Or better yet have a staff member go with each group to monitor things. The staff member can be in the back and follow ..sort of like a guided tour guide but in the back. Let the group know withing the explaining of the rules of the guide prensence but only there for assistance purposes only. Have a discount night! For firsg responders, teachers, veterans, active miltary, law enforcement , health care workers... Even for students in college maybe! read more

If this your first time visiting Markoff's Haunted Forest, be prepared to be blinded folded during one of experiences, asked to hold a rope to guide you while the staff grabs your ankles, wraps their arms around your chest, grabs your shoulder, and then snatches the blind fold off your face without communicating that the experience is over. Markoff's staff should not touch their patrons during experiences especially when the patrons are blindfolded. Please note there is an older woman who unexpectedly snatches the blindfolds off your face and spends her energy finding ways to destroy any sense of enjoyment by hollering at the patrons and accusing them of one thing or the other. In other experiences you will be chased down stairs in dimly lit areas nearly rolling your ankles. What should have been a great memory for my child and diverse set of friends turned into a drive home with my child sharing the traumatic experience with tears streaming down. My child and kind-natured friends were chaperoned by a parent who stayed with them throughout the visit. read more

This was such a fun time! I would recommend the trail and the town! I would start with the town because it's not as scary, but it's still awesome to see and beautifully done. They also have zip lining and a death roll. I didn't do the zip line due to time constraints, but the death roll is something you should look into. It was only $24 and not a long wait at all. The hot cider was delicious if you're 21, and the fire pits really add to the ambiance! read more

I've heard a lot of good things about Markoff's so I felt like I was in for a treat coming here. This is for the year 2019. First off, I have give them credit for the super efficient number calling. It's incredibly useful to give customers a waiting number while they waiting in the center while they play games and eating food. The bonfire was a cool concept and the mini-games and food were decent. As for the actual forest itself, it was quite underwhelming. I heard it was really interactive in previous years where you have to navigate and perform activities to make your way around. Nope, just walked in a straight line on level ground for the most. The scares were mostly limited to just cheap jump scares. I was grabbed by the ankle once. I don't know. I went during Halloween weekend and expected a lot more workers but they seemed pretty scarce. All in all, great bonfire center and waiting line concept, but subpar haunted forest. Save your money and skip the forest. 40 bucks for 20 minutes, you really leave there with a sour taste. read more

The Haunted Forest is always my favorite part of October! I've been going for years and I love everything about my night in the woods. The front area is so beautiful with big bonfires, scary actors, and lots of great food. And the forest walk is so fun. Lots of great big scares and just incredible scenes. Love it! This haunted attraction has grown over the years, and they even have a 21+ area which is awesome! The trail is at least twice as long as it was 15-20 years ago when I first went. Great times years after years. Will continue to return every fall, best haunted night in DC-metro area. read more

Markoff's Haunted Forest - Entrance to the MHF trail - Haunted Houses Near Me - Dickerson, Maryland

We visited Markoff's this weekend with a group of friends and as usual, it did not disappoint. Due to everything going on with Covid, this was our first haunted attraction visit in two years. Pre-pandemic we have visited Markoff's many times and have done both The Trail and The Town. Every year Markoff's brings it with a mix of movie-grade and antique props and scenes, animatronics, and many scare actors in each section. This year's trail was definitely the best yet and felt very long with so much to look at while being scared and entertained. Markoff's has always been great with its timed entry system. After entering the property, they have huge fire pits, concession stands, and outdoor adventure games if you have to wait awhile. You can freely move through the waiting area instead of being stuck in a long, zigzagging line for hours. We have visited many haunted attractions in several states and Markoff's is one of the best, especially in the DMV area. read more
