So disappointed, I want to give these guy 5 stars but I guess I am not. I came here yesterday at 1:00 pm to have a hair cut, and everything went fine until the moment I left and got home. My girlfriend told me that my hairline in the back is not straight, neither my sideburns, the guy was nice and friendly, but he didn't do the right job. Later on, I went to another barbershop and paid an additional $25. So basically one hair cut cost me $55. Thanks Marks! read more

I just recently moved to the midtown area and was looking around for a barbershop. I came across Mark's barber shop when I did a map search for places closest to me. All the reviews were awesome so I made my appointment for that afternoon. When I pulled up to the place, I was amazed that it was in a old train cart. The place has so much personality and that goes for the man inside as well. Mark is friendly and easy to talk so it makes the hair cut that much more enjoyable. You can tell when someone knows how to cut hair right off the bat and he was good! At a cost of 23$ you can't beat that for the service you get and the cool feel of sitting in a train cart while getting your hair cut. If your in the area and you need an awesome barber, give Mark's barber shop a try. You will not be disappointed. read more

Others have already mentioned this but it's important to reiterate, make an appointment a few days in advance and bring cash. Like most traditional barbershops, expect a good conversation. I really like Mark's. Finally I have found a barber that's reasonably priced in Houston, and a proper barber not one that's full of TV's and women wearing glasses and cutting your hair with a shaver only! At $23, this place is a bargain, and a bit of a Houston institution. He seems to have been here for ages and the great and the good come here, making it a bit of a hidden gem. Good haircut. I recommend Mark's. The first time I approached the parking lot, I thought the big red train caboose that said "Mark's Barber Shop" on it was just a splashy eye-catcher for a barber shop in the adjacent building. But nope - Mark's really is inside the caboose. He's got just one chair, so appointments are suggested, and the standard, no-frills haircut is $18 (price as of April, 2011). I've been twice so far, and Mark has given me a good haircut both times. My hair's not that difficult, but it's wavy, which throws some people for a loop; sometimes they try to make it too damn short to get down past all the waves. Mark just works *with* the waves, and does a fine job. Mark is friendly and a good conversationalist, but not one who will talk your ear off. There's a TV on the wall, some magazines, and a bench for waiting customers (though with only one barber's chair and most people making appointments half an hour apart, there usually isn't anyone sitting around waiting). read more

I just had the worst haircut. It took an hour. My sides are uneven and one sideburn is down to my skin. He left two lines in the side of my head because of the trimmers. My beard is also uneven. I am embarrassed I have to go to work with a haircut like this because I do not have time to get it fixed. I would love a refund but there was only 1 stylist who I think was under the influence Of something and no business cards for owner or manager. Terrible experience. Please do not go. read more

Mark is a professional. He's going to tell you like it is and be a gentleman about it. I've only been once but I'd go back more often if it wasn't so difficult to get in with him. He's always booked when I'm available. Which is a shame. His spot is great. It's a train car for goodness sakes. $25 is a little high but a fair price for the quality of work. Just went in for a haircut, called to make an appointment beforehand. Decent price ($23) for the area. Cut was also good, nothing great, but he didn't mess anything up. However it is only 2 stars due to the racist and sexist things both Mark and his coworker (who actually did the cut) said during my time there. I won't go into what exactly they said but they made me feel very uncomfortable and they were very unprofessional. If you are fine and comfortable with blatant racism and sexism, along with a good haircut at a decent price, then this is the place for you! read more

When my old Barber retired I spent weeks looking for a new Barber Shop. Just went to Mark's this morning and I think I've found the best Barber in town. A couple of tips though: freshen up on your Barber talk, take cash, don't be late. Let him know exactly how you want it cut. Very talented man. Best haircut I've ever had. read more

I've lived in Houston for 2 years and this was the first time I got a haircut I was happy with. It was my first time and being so used to everyone taking credit cards I just assumed, well it's cash only, when I said I'd run and get cash and be right back Mark told me to take a seat, if I didn't like the cut, I didn't have to pay otherwise I could bring him the money when he was done. I used to get my hair cut at Martin's Gentlemen's Salon but after I found out my barber Wayne no longer worked there I knew it was time for a change. The prices there were way too expensive. I looked up barbers in town and Mark's was at the top of the list with all 5 stars so I decided to give it a shot. When I walked in the door, Wayne was standing there waiting! Small world!! Well, I had high hopes. I even kinda liked Mark, good conversationalist. Even seems skilled with the scissors. But the man didn't do a good job listening, and would rather do his own thing without clarifying what the customer wants. That's very, very not good. I have a side-part cut, pushed back, longish on top. Fairly normal, but I get it cut a little different than usual because my hair's wavy and thick and my head is a bit pointier than I'd like. I basically do a Mitt Romney but cropped shorter up the sides/back. Here were the problems. 1) I asked for the sides and back as short as a 1.5, but please fade it up. Mark didn't fade it, at all. On the left side of my head it's just a simple buzz up to the part. 2) I asked very specifically, even grabbing and showing the chunk of hair to which I was referring, to please leave the upper part of the right side (which should have been more or less balanced by the upper portion of the left side but which he buzzed off, see above) alone, as I want it long enough to push back. Instead, Mark simply buzzed all the way up the side. Great, this will take 3 months to grow out before I stop looking oddly pinheaded. 3) I don't use any product in my hair. I'd have been happy to tell Mark this, but he didn't ask before he put some waxy shit in it. God damnit. Sigh. So I tip him $6 on $23 (it's apparently no longer $18, fyi), thank him and leave. I had to call when I got home because it's just totally screwed and unfixable. After 2), I pretty much cannot fix this without just waiting it out. I didn't want money back, just wanted to briefly tell Mark about 1-3. A few things happened in that conversation: a) Mark admitted that he didn't use a 1.5, he instead decided, without asking me, that a 3.5 would be better. Of course, if he'd asked, I'd have clarified that that's why I wanted it faded up. I don't think this is unusual. b) Mark admitted that he heard me request 2) above but cut it off anyway because he thought it'd be too asymmetrical. Well, if you'd done 1) properly, it wouldn't be, and further, how about you ask before you cut? You can't uncut hair, Mark. I'd think a barber of your age would understand that. c) I was interrupted nearly every sentence I tried to get out of my mouth. He wasn't upset, but rather defensive, and frankly when someone politely calls you to give you feedback, being defensive and shifting blame onto them for requesting something... well, now this is on Yelp. Buyer beware. read more

Great men's haircut for $18, I proably visited 10 different places and even was paying $40 at Visible Changes before finding Mark's.

This is the only good barber I've found within the loop. Mark runs his own shop solo, so it's important to make reservations and be on time. Also important to note it's a cash-only business, $23/cut, which is a deal compared to most. Mark is very personable and professional, great haircut without the rush or assembly line feel of most chain shops. Great little place and again, the only one I use in the city. read more

I have been looking for a good barber shop in this area of town for a couple of years. This is a good place, definitely will go back. Mark is a very nice guy, gives a good haircut, and doesn't try to push other "fancy" products and services on you like many other places. There is one chair in the shop, so you it doesn't feel like one of those mass produced haircut places. I could see that it is beneficial to call ahead.
