Wow what an amazing experience I just had. I wish there where more places like this. A true gentleman salon. I think one of the saddest parts about moving away from Houston was not being able to get my hair cut here regularly. I still try and take trips back when I can and always book my haircut with Nassar. He has great attention to detail, knows exactly what I'm looking for and gets me in and out quickly looking so much better than when I walked in. TL;DR - I'd give this place a million stars if I could. Martin is an excellent stylist who is friendly, professional, and very knowledgeable! Service - I went in for the long to short hair transformation ($75) and was immediately greeted by Martin with a warm welcome and an offer for something to drink. I sat down and we discussed what we should do with my hair and his recommendations. I then got my hair shampooed, a hot towel for my face, a short neck massage, and then my haircut. While $75 for a haircut sounds a bit steep when compared to a Great Clips $12 haircut, I think it's so worth it because you get Martin's 35 years of experience and expert opinion. For most barbers, you'd usually just tell them what you want and they cut it, but I was looking for someone who could tell me what I should do with my hair and give their expert opinion. I really enjoyed the service here and will definitely be back! Vibe - the interior is modern and clean. The chairs are nice and sturdy, and the mirrors are spotless. Good place for a haircut. However I was confused, because online it says the gentlemen haircut is $57 with a hair wash and hot towel. I paid $57 plus tip, and just got a haircut. A bit steep for this. If you're going to play over $60 for a haircut it's best to avoid this place and go to somewhere where you get more value. read more

I wanted to leave a review for this place. First the service is great. Sam and Martin have always been fantastic to me when I get my haircut. The problem arises with a phone call I had today. A gentleman answered the phone and I asked for Sam. She wasn't available and then so I asked for Martin. He wasn't either but then the gentleman offered me other hairdressers that were available at the time. When I kindly refused, he said in an annoyed voice "whatever" and promptly hung up. I'm not sure that this is the way you're supposed to treat guests of your services. The guy left a sour taste in my mouth and not wanting to call in to book an appointment again. read more

MGS is both "the place for well groomed men," & those who value their personal hairstyle. I enjoy the cut, and trim services by either Olga, Gretchen, but especially by Angel. A single word that best describes Angel is careful. She neatly handles her scissors, glides the clippers and meticulously handworks hair product deftly across to shape & hold your hairstyle. I'm probably the most picky haircut client a stylist will ever meet, and I don't give reviews lightly, but I was immensely impressed with the folks at Martin's. From the moment I walked in, I knew I had made the right choice. The lady behind the receptionist station greeted me immediately and offered me a drink. My stylist, Laura, came over and greeted me right away and also offered me a drink, sat me down and asked what I would like to do with my hair. I told her a few things I didn't like about it, and she asked me a few questions as she tousled my hair about to get a feel for what she was working with, then made several suggestions, asked me what I thought and reassured me that it would look amazing when she got finished with it. Instead of walking me over to another area of the salon to wash my hair, she merely swung my chair around, slid open a section of her station counter top, revealing a hidden wash basin that was built right in (very Kingsman-esque!) and gave me a nice, relaxing shampooing and scalp massage. After that was all done, she informed me that they also include a neck massage with every haircut and asked me if I would be ok with that (umm...yeah!!) After a glorious 3-4 minute neck massage, I awoke from my nearly catatonic state and she started trimming away, all the while engaging me in interesting conversation. Once she was done, she handed me a mirror to look a 360° view of her masterpiece, I asked her to take a little more off the back, which she obliged with enthusiasm, and then...perfection! As we walked back to the front, I asked her about their shampoo selection, to which she responded with a couple of options based on my fine hair type, searched vigorously for a small sample size to try out, then handed me off to the lady at the register, who booked my next appointment and sent me a reminder confirmation via text and I was off to the races. I took a chance on this place based on Yelp reviews and I'm so glad that I did. I was greeted politely and professionally at the door. I was also served a delicious espresso. I asked the beautiful young lady at the front desk who she would recommend that had great skills with tight fades and clean lines. She suggested a hair stylist named Laura (Nicholson). Laura was fantastic. Her skills, conversation, politeness, delicate touch and cleanliness were all top notch. I am very happy to recommend this stylist and shop. I took the rest of the day to contemplate this review and after thinking it over.... I'm really disappointed in this place this time around. The last time I brought my bf here for his birthday, Tanesha (no longer there) did a great job and gave him a great cut and what was better was her service. This time .....I did not feel like my bf got the proper treatment. First of all if you're charging $50 for a haircut, for a guy... it better be spectacular. Normally they wash your hair, cut, massage and hot towel you... which to me is the reason for such a pricey haircut. This time I made my bfs appointment with Rhoda. When we arrived we weren't greeted by anyone. Then I believe one of the assistant hairstylists asked if we had an appointment and my bf gave her the info. I asked to use the restroom (since we literally traveled an HOUR from our area to get get this AMAZING cut). When I came out my bf was already in her chair near the back. She didn't say hello really but I didn't want to disturb them so I just said I'd be in the front if they needed me (for my opinion in case) Prior to the coming I looked at their Yelp and saw a previous cut done by Trent (I think) and snapshotted it to my bf so he could show her what he was going for . * I have posted the picture below that we wanted and his cut ... for comparison purposes.* People often cut his hair too short and because he has fine, straight hair, it tends to make his head look a bit strange. I sat across the room waiting... I looked over and noticed they weren't having much conversation which bothered me but everyone is different so I ignored my anxiousness. I waited to see him relax and get his head washed and neck massaged (like the last time).... did NOT see any of that happen. I notice his hair kept getting shorter and shorter. I didn't want to run across the room and make a fuss so I hoped that my bf has showed her the picture and that she was trying to match it. (He did show her the picture btw) After about 20 mins I see her blow dry his a head for a few seconds and add product and then take off the hair bib. No hot towel? No treatment like I saw pretty much every other guy in the room. He walks toward me and I can tell it's too short. My bf is the type of person to not make a fuss but I could tell he felt it was too short. They walked up and he asked me what I thought and I said "I think it's a bit short... not really what I had in mind" Rhoda's response "well that was the picture"... not professional or concerned at all. I didn't say anything except thank you. Martin (owner) was actually in the room and it took all the "chill" in me to not walk over and show him the pictures we had shown her so he could observe for himself whether they were similar. When we checked out the girl asked if he got a shampoo'd and he said no so the charge was $43.... to me that cut was worth maybe $25-30 and with the lack luster treatment... we could have gotten better at a Sportsclips(which is the most annoying place ). On top of that, while she did give him a quick beard shave .... she totally nicked his necked leaving a red rash on his neck (see photo) with razor marks that he told me burned. Overall, we walked out and my bf was kinda disappointed. He left $50 so he still tipped (because he's a decent person and professional) her but the feeling was less than satisfactory and I couldn't believe her response. I wish they did more to make sure he felt like an important client and I wish that the reference picture was actually what he got. Decide for yourself. If they don't reach out to rectify ... then I can say this will be the last time we visit this place. Which is a bummer because the first experience was great. Maybe I should have picked a different stylist? But when your advertising an experience, everyone should make it special. read more

Came here at the reconnection of a friend who goes to Martin himself. I looked at the stylists and moved Laura's work so I went with her and I live in Austin - but she will be my new hairstylist for good - hell I would make drives out there because she is that good! She's super funny, gives great advice about styling and keeping hair healthy and does an an amazing job! Look. If your the kind of person who thinks a haircut is a haircut, then you should just go to cost cutters or great clips. Nasser couldn't have been more friendly and non-invasive. I hate stylists that are one of two things- overly friendly or a complete blank page (not one word). It was easy to tell when I walked in that the service would be more expensive than the chain salons, but it's worth it! My stylist and Ingot a laugh from the 'damage' done 4 weeks earlier by the great clips lady, and he knew immediately what I've been asking others to do all along! My only regret is that I'm not a permanent resident of Houston, and eventually I will have to find a salon that can do this well. The 48$ price isn't a problem when you consider wether or not you will look good- or terrible. I got the former from Nasser! I'm sold! read more

Sam is amazing!! I have gotten my hair cut at countless upscale men's salon's and no one has given me the custom haircut Sam does. 10/10 recommend her. I am currently in school to be a dentist. Sam displays the attention to detail and artistical knack for cutting hair equivalent which is equivalent to what we must produce when when restoring teeth. She is truly a hair wizard! I have a terrible cowlick on the back of my head. No one has been able to correct it. Same has truly customized my haircut. Over our several visits she has honed in on exactly my needs. You can't even tell the cowlick is there. I don't know how she does it, but she does! Aside from Sam, the salon is great and very welcoming. The owner is very personable and a friendly face in the store. You can tell her cares about his business. Super convenient and relaxing, especially after a long week of tests. I have recommended this place to many of my classmates already and will continue to do so. read more

Edson has been my most recent barber and he is truly talented. He has great skill with the straight razor and attention to detail. I look and feel cooler with this haircut, a very fresh fade. When I was first told "they serve you whiskey while getting your hair cut" I was like: " SIGN ME UP!" After two visits, and assurance that having Bourbon on the rocks at 11am does not make me a raging alcoholic, I think I have enough to do a proper review. First off, it's pricey. $60 for a haircut before tip (that's including beard trim, shampoo, and hot towel). For the past 15+ years I've been going to Sport Clips with usually good results. So why trade in the $25 cut for nearly $60 when all is said and done? My story is: I grew a beard that got pretty long, and with hair getting a little thinner in the front, My girlfriend agreed, time for a new look. I needed a stylist who could help me figure out that look. Rhoda did a good job of doing just that. Over sport clips, I like the atmosphere better, the consistency of having the same stylist each time (possible at sport clips, but turnover and timing can make this tricky, so I only ever used whomever was first available), and having a drink definitely is the icing on the cake. If the price of the quality and quantity of the services is worth it to you, Martin's is definitely a great choice. Oh and if whiskey at 11am isn't for you (?!), they have coffee as well for you weirdos. read more

The service is excellent and the attention to detail is impressive. As soon as you walk in, they're quick to check you in and assign you to someone if you don't have a preference. While you wait, they even offer a beverage (anything from simple water to a stiff one if you're in the mood). I'd say the best part of this establishment is they're the only barber/salon I've been to (in 3 different states in the last 5 years) that isn't afraid to provide suggestions about what kind of cut that would suit you or how to style your hair. I found this to be extremely helpful and refreshing as I've been exasperated when some of my previous barbers would look on with annoyance and continually ask, "Just tell me what you want." There are people who know what they want and are familiar with their "numbers" but some people have no idea and are open to new ideas/experimenting, and I fall into the latter category. The only thing I would mention is that typical men's cuts are a little pricier here than what I'm used to (I usually like to spend somewhere between $20-30) but after several bad experiences with incompetence, apathy, and carelessness on the part of other barbershops, I'm happy to shell out a little more for service that works with you to help you figure out what style works best for each individual since we're all very different.
