I moved to a different t part of town so I decided to try a few places closer to me in Montrose. Not only was the $50 haircut a kick in the @$$, but the quality wasn't even close... and these were high end shops. Adolfo is a true master at his craft, a true barber. Great barber shop and I'm thankful to Yelp for helping me find it! While visiting Houston, I needed a haircut and this place popped up at the top of the list. It was a little bit of a distance from my hotel, but based on the reviews I knew it would be worth the trek. Walking in, you can tell it's an old school barber shop (which is what I like). I waited a few minutes and then Joe Lee himself comes out from the back and puts me in a chair. In addition to a nice haircut, I learned a lot about how Houston has grown in the 50+ years that Joe Lee has been there. It was a nice, leisurely cut and I felt very welcome in the store. Now, from my perspective, $23 is a little pricey for a buzz cut (which is what I get) and it's $9 more than I pay in NYC, but I'm not going to complain about that. It doesn't hurt that it's just down the street from me either, but Joe Lee and the other barbers all do a great job when I need a trim. Probably the worst shop in Htown. Most of the decent reviews are based on barbers that are no longer there. I went in to get a CLEAN UP and BEARD EDGE. Only shop open for walk ins on Mondays In the area and had a flight to catch later in the afternoon. Told the old guy to follow the hair line, and then repeated it throughout. FOLLOW THE HAIR LINE. Dude cut in nearly 1 inch down from my hair line on my face, talking about "had to even It out", and argued with me when I kept pointing out his terrible work. Line wasn't even straight!!! Needless to say, walked out with no beard, razor marks on my face from straight edge and a fucked up taper... wish I could give this place 0 stars... You been warned. good luck! read more

Ambrose cut my son's hair. My son tried to cut his own hair and left himself a bald spot on top of his head!! Ambrose did an awesome job fixing it. Plus my son wanted to stop going to a "little kids salon" and go somewhere were a Man gets his hair cut, cause according to him he's a man now. So we took him to an old school barbershop. I had a similar experience to one of the reviewers. My barbershop was closed for the holidays and I have I job interview in a few days. I called this place on a Saturday to make sure they're open. The gentleman on the phone said they close at 4:30 pm. When I went there, a costumer asked the same question and the answer was 5 pm. Ok no big deal. Without greeting, I was asked to come over to the chair. I told the young barber how I like my hair cut. Most of the time, he wasn't even looking at me while I was explaining. The guy was chatting with his colleagues and suddenly was looking for a screwdriver. I thought he was going to disassemble my head or something. Anyway, he gave me a mirror to check the back part and it was way too short. When I complained about that, his answer was "OK". I wasn't satisfied with my haircut but I don't usually complain too much. It was too short and unfixable anyway. I paid the $23 which wasn't worth it and said thank you. The guy didn't even reply. If you go there, I think you should ask for one of the older gentlemen. I'm never coming back to this place though. read more

Well, today I accompanied my Roommate to his Barber of choice. Joe Lee's Barber Shop. He's been talking the place up for as long as he has been living in Houston, and after today, I can testify that he's not lying. I'm a Barber Junkie. I love to have someone competent cut my hair, and not charge me an arm and a leg to do it. I walked into the 4 chair room, and after waiting a very few minutes, one of the Barbers asked "Are you here to get a cut?" I said sure am, and seconds later, she had slipped the cover over me and buttoned it up. Lightest touch I've ever had from a barber. Simply Amazing haircut, did all the right things, provided me with a complete grooming experience, hot steamed towel for my neck, shaved all the hair off it, and left me completely satisfied. My roommate got his hair cut by Joe Lee, and while he was engaged in that, had the person who did shoe shine's take his shoes and do a complete treatment while he was in the chair. Awesome service, great haircut, and a personable, low key place. I will return next month and every month after that so long as I'm in Houston. read more

No clippers, scissors only - great haircut. This is the one of the best haircuts I've gotten in years. Asked me several questions about how I wanted it cut and how long since last cut, etc. They didn't rely on the clippers at all except for edges around the ear and neck area, scissors only and it shows. It's unfortunate most barbers live and die by their electric clippers. The best haircuts are done without them. Shoe shine was very thorough and well worth the $. I actually had to come here after another local barbershop (which is very highly rated on yelp) gave me terrible haircut. Alex performed a great salvage and I walked out with a great hair cut. The barbers here take their time and are detail oriented. I have gone to Alex the last 5 times I have been here and he is my go to barber. Although I have only tried two barbershops in Houston, I have to say this is the one I will stick to. This place is a legitimate, old school barbershop. Prices are reasonable for Houston. This place is awesome!!! Has a classic timeless feel...I really like how small it is (4 chairs). Open 6 days a week and conveniently located downtown. I come here once every 2 weeks and have never had to wait in line even for a second. I don't know how they do it! It's like 4.5 stars... I walked in with a crazy overgrown mop of hair and came out looking crisp and clean. The shop is relaxed and friendly - totally manland, but without pretense or attitude - just is what it is. The barbers all appeared to be taking all appropriate time with each customer to ensure they had a fine, high quality hair cut. With all four chairs operating, the wait was really minimal - esp considering I was there late-lunchtime on a Friday afternoon. The prices were totally reasonable, the parking free and easy-peasy... Gosh. Just returning to Houston after 25 years away in Austin, I was not looking forward to finding a new barber shop... it can be a difficult road littered with disappointment. I needed a haircut for an upcoming interview and I was relatively short on time. This place looked pretty good based on reviews and was nearby, so I took a chance. The location is a little awkward and the parking lot was a little small, but that didn't bug me too much. It's a pretty old school shop on the inside with a nice unpretentious vibe. Cops was on TV, a mix of blue collar and business people customers, and healthy banter you expect in a shop. I really liked my barber personally, but it was pretty clear about halfway through the cut that he was the least experienced guy in the shop. I asked for a simple scissors cut without anything special. He went about his work, trimming here and there, paying a lot of attention to my hairline in the back. When he finished, he left my hair somewhat wet and it looked ok. I didn't think to ask him to dry it up a bit so I could see how it would 'really' look, and this would be my downfall. I was kind of irritated by the cash only policy, especially since their convenient ATM charges $3 on top of whatever my bank will end up gouging me, but whatever - I was in a rush. When I got home and actually dried my hair off completely, I was shocked at how much worse it looked. My guy didn't even pretend to blend the slightly longer top with the shorter sides, resulting in this weird pseudo-bowl line around the middle of my head. Also my bangs in front needed some extra trimming to match the overall look. This experience taught me an important lesson: never leave a barber shop without seeing your hair dry and without product (or however you normally wear your hair). The wet hair obscured the horrendous nature of the cut, and I'm going to look slightly absurd tomorrow at my interview. The only reason this isn't one star is that when I called the place and spoke to the manager, they were very nice and told me to come right back in for a fix. Sadly I didn't have the time and didn't have a lot of faith in them. I imagine if I had been taken care of by one of the older guys there it would have been just fine, but as a new customer at a place you are pretty much obligated to get cut by the first available guy. read more

Went to Adolfo today, for the first time, around 530p. Plenty of parking on their lot which isn't the norm for downtown so this is a big plus. It's an old school joint, they offer haircuts and shoe shine, I think the last place I've seen anybody shine shoes was at the airport. They only take cash but there's an ATM inside. Adolfo's been cutting hair for a long time and his attention to detail shows it. Great experience, I think I'll be coming back. It is a little on the expensive side$25.00 but way cheaper than a high end salon and they do cash only so it's inconvenience . I do need to find a cheaper one for my touch ups/cleaning. Go there - the place is a real bonafide barber shop. The barber took his time giving me one of the best haircuts I have had in a long time. It's unpretentious, clean, and inexpensive. I paid 22 plus tip. I noticed they had barbers in each age range to give haircuts that suited their customers. You had "old timers" sitting next to oil and gas young professionals. I have to say the place is old-fashioned in the best sense. It's great for guys who want a simple haircut and the barbers seem to do a really good job. My guy really paid attention to detail and he didn't make me feel like he was rushing me out of there despite the fact there was a couple of people waiting. It sort of feels like you're stepping back in time a little bit, but that's part of its charm. The guys seem extremely professional there, to-the-point, polite, and friendly.
