6/30/2015 I applied for scholarship as a $0/NO INCOME applicant with a strong presence in the Jewish community. I was offered to pay $110/month. YET, The regular members had a special where they would pay $140/month with a two month free discount and a decreased regular price of $245. I was stunned by the poor treatment. I talked to other scholarship recipients. I would not recommend the Marlene Meyerson JCC. I have volunteered many times at the JCC. I never thought there practices would treat community members so poorly. Baruch Hashem. I have also volunteered for Dorot, where I have delivered food items to elderly Jewish community members. I have spent time with Jewish elders and Rabbis during their times of hardship when I was able to walk. I volunteer for Repair the World, which is a Jewish organization committed to helping impoverished Jews across America. I have campaigned for peace in Israel after the October attacks on many occasions. I also have helped with TALMA, a Jewish organization that travels to Israel to help people displaced by war. Furthermore, I have volunteered for the JCC Harlem and JCC Manhattan to support Jewish programming. I am very disappointed. Baruch Hashem. read more

Afterschool Clubhouse - We are so grateful for Afterschool Clubhouse. My 5th grader is happy, and most importantly, we truly feel that she is supported and genuinely cared for there. The Private Swimming classes and the way this program is run is very poor, especially the guy in charge, Christopher Lucas, a nasty man. "trainers" really aren't and I don't know how they are qualified to be called swim coaches at all. they don't have any profiles on the JCC site, and when you ask for some bios so you can select the one best for you, you're told NO and you're just assigned some rando person according to the time you want to go. (Getting told NO is a recurring theme at the private swim program) There is only 1 time slot available during week days 2-3:30 and at the facility at all other times is so crowded that it's not pleasant to be there or especially the ladies locker room, which is utterly packed with little kids. If you become ill the day of your appointment, you can cancel but you will be charged for the session you've already paid for PLUS a penalty. But a trainer can cancel one hour before and that's fine apparently. Trainers can fail to show up for your appointment and that's ok. And when a trainer reschedules a session for a day and time when you are no longer in the city you won't be refunded. read more

The canasta class was a complete disappointment. It is not a supervised class for one. The instructor was unable and unwilling to accommodate me. She acted as oh who cares what you think. I communicated this to her with no response. read more

Organization is Fantastic. I been a member of Adaptations Program for adults learning differences. Are mixed ages. Is at Jewish Community Center. Except are activities included aren't JCC. I attended a few Yoga sessions via Health Club & yoga sessions were marvelous. Also participated sorting donations via volunteering with other people. Enjoyed being involved with a community Another activity I did was creating cards for people nursing homes with Engage Women's Group. All these events were a pleasure. very crowded with high schoolers from 530 to 730 but otherwise not too crowded. very nice locker room. But with regard to gym staff does not enforce cell phone rules so can be quite noisy. one of my family members switched to another gym due to this, but i am trying to work with the system to get the staff to switch. Hours post covid do not enable me to go to the gym before work when it is less crowded. Hours saturday night should be extended in recognition of shabbat. read more

The JCC is one of the official Jewish community centers of the city. I've gone to a few of their events over the past few months, and I'm thankful it's entered my life. They have a pool and fitness center as well as a family and daycare center with events, but I've only gone there for social events. First of all, their food is fantastic. They make everything in-house, and for kosher food, it is impressive. Their burger is, and I kid you not, the best I've ever had. Second, they have events for all the major Jewish holidays, like Hanukkah, and they also do special events, like LGBT Shabbat dinners and summer kickoffs. If you get a chance to attend an event on the rooftop, do it. It's very pretty and fun. Third, the crowd is generally 22-30. The one major negative is that it's heavily female, I'd say about 90%. They should screen who RSVPs and fix that somehow through their marketing. Keep your eyes out on the calendar for their events and activities. They also have a bulletin board on the first floor - a good place to find tutors and whatnot and post fliers. The JCC is a solid place to check out if you're looking to get more active within the city's Jewish community. L'chaim! read more

I recently joined the JCC. It serves as an official Jewish community center where lots of social events take place for the local residents here. Families bring their children here for special daycare and childcare classes. There is also a fitness center here opened for everyone regardless of your religious affiliation and this is what I joined. They have a weight room, machines, and a swimming pool. The pool can get pretty crowded especially during adult lap swim hours, but usually you can get in as long as you swim and keep in pace with the other swimmers. They also have towel service. It gets busiest between 6pm to 8:30pm after everybody gets out of work. They have yoga classes and other fitness classes. read more

I'm very sorry to say that I'm extremely unhappy with the way jcc (the little club house) is handling this situation. My kids have been going there for about a year. We were very happy with the in person classes. Since covid 19 we have left the city. They decided to tell my wife that there will only be classes on zoom. This was not a choice. This is the law according to them. My wife and my self do not like our kids using iPads or computers. Besides the fact that it's impossible to get a 2 year old to sit still and pay attention. After a month of emails to the school finally Karin finally answered and said we can have a credit to use there facilities with a very nasty attitude. This is a time where we should all be helping each other. Not taking advantage of the situation and bulling people around. It saddens me very much to say I would never recommend this place to anyone. read more

I know I am stating the obvious and expected here given the facilities name and intended purpose, but if you are like me and appreciate and thrive off of a little diversity and are not used to insanely monotonous social-economic demographics...I would advise not coming here. I signed up for a membership here because it had a pool and it was situated in between where I work and where I live (Washington Heights). As a young adult in my 20s who has waited almost 20 years to finally move to the big city with the hopes of escaping several pervasive aspects of suburbia, this was the worst choice I could have made in regards to picking the right gym/pool. Besides the fact that I can barely afford it, it is always crowded with an endless sea of similar people. Want to escape the crowds and go on a weekend? Forget it. That is when it is converted to stroller city. I've swam at several pools around New Jersey/ Connecticut and have never had such an issue with so many people not knowing how to not extend their arms over the lane line. I can't even tell you how many times I have been smacked head on by a swimmer from a parallel lane. You will get hit by an arm/ leg at least twice a week and you will be sharing a lane with 5-6 other people. You will also have to deal with swimmers who are way too slow to be in the lane that they are in. (The lanes are designated by speed) Once again, I have never had this problem in cheaper pools/ gyms in other areas. The lifeguards will rarely enforce this unless someone complains about you or you complain about someone else. The gym is alright if it wasn't for the expensive price of membership. It's size definitely does not match the cost. Half of the already small gym space is usually taken up by patrons and their personal trainers. Nanny's are in abundance on the weekends because I guess some parents work even on weekends these days. I am trying to reach out to the young adults who know what a struggle feels like and what overcoming adversity entails. Joining a community based organization with the similar goal of the JCC is extremely important and worth a financial investment...but definitely look at other options across the five boroughs.You can save a lot of money and simultaneously be immersed in a wonderful diverse population from all different social and economic backgrounds that you would be missing out on if you joined the JCC. Those special, authentic interactions has made and will continue to make this city so incredibly special and endearing. I can't complain too much about the facility itself as most of my issues are more socially and psychological in scope, but if you are young, adventurous, not wealthy and not an upper west sider I would advise to find a more accommodating place where you do not feel like you are surrounded by the population of Scarsdale New York. I hope to be able to cancel membership and join a neighborhood Y or other facility in Brooklyn where I am moving to at 1/4 the price. read more

The only thing missing at the JCC is a tool to help you navigate the schedule to find the times during which the pool is a peewee and peepee free zone. Any day of the week you must navigate through Moms, Nannies, strollers and every kid in Manhattan - and that's just to get to the elevators. I joined the JCC with a fitness/pool membership. I'm loving the pool and taking private swim instruction. Locker room is fine, the staff is nice (odd for a gym), and everything is pretty good except.... watchout!....during children's swim, family swim, children's private lessons - and then factor in the added impact of children's nannies at the pool, nannies on their cellphones talking to other nannies on the other side of the pool, nannies blowdrying children's hair in the locker rooms, mommies and daddies swimming with children and their swim noodles....you get the picture... Bottom line -I really like this place - it's convenient for me and has a nice selection of equipment, etc. But be aware this place is exceptionally family oriented - and you need to factor that in when deciding on a membership here read more

Reasons I love the the JCC gym: 1) It's a great value for what you get (gym access, classes, pool, steam rooms, towel service). There's a special discount for 18-25 year olds, making it a pretty sweet deal. 2) The classes are fantastic. The instructors are really knowledgeable and helpful, and give a lot of tips on how you can integrate the things you're learning into your own workout. 3) The space is clean and bright, and they take care of the equipment. 4) People are really, really, nice. The security guard at the front door greets me by name, the front desk staff are really friendly- it definitely doesn't have the major 'tude that some fancier gyms have (*ahem, Equinox). There are a TON of kids around though. The lobby, elevators, change rooms, and especially the pool can be a little chaotic. Doesn't matter to me- I stick to the gym area, and have yet to trample a toddle on my way to the elliptical trainer... read more

I've been taking a Hebrew class at the JCC and I must say the class and the facilities get an A+ The only thing I wish about the JCC is that the classes cost less (the ulpan and all other classes in general) and that the gym was more affordable. Love, love, love this place. The most thing I like is that its super clean, the people are super friendly, and they have so much to offer to people who may not want to join and become a member. Yes you may pay a lil more for a particular class but I think its so worth it. They have a private gym, swimming pools, steam rooms, showers, they evem offer massages, and so much more. I would say to visit there website to see what they have available. They have alot to offer for people of all ages, and race. For it to be a jewish center, and yes that does stand out, you never feel any type of discrimination or awkwardness. Besides they have all type of people of diffrent ethnicity working here. I enjoy the swimming execrise class im in, although I am the yougest, the whole group is a delight. We have our own pool separate from the others just for the class. The pool is beautiful, however, if you get there are the wrong time it's worse than Fairway on a Saturday morning. Actually, you know the prickly old ladies who would shove you out of the way to get the last sale item? They go straight from the checkout line at Fairway to the JCC pool. It's the same crowd. If you're going too slow for them, they'll swim right into your feet. Or if you're going to fast, they'll yell/scold at you at each opportunity. They'll cut in front of you at a turn. At the wrong time the pool continues to reinforce every stereotype of the entitled UWS resident, jews and gentiles alike ... they're all horrible. I was very impressed with this JCC- but then again, it's Manhattan. It should be expected. We were visiting from out of town and luckily since we are members at our local JCC, we had reciprocity and got some free passes. I have to say I really appreciated the airport-like security at the front. I feel like every JCC needs this, not just in Manhattan. The front lobby is a stroller parking lot. I honestly couldn't believe how many strollers there were! A little overwhelming since it's 8 floors, but we did our own mini-tour. Preschool, Federation, library, rooftop playground, indoor swimming and a decent workout area. One thing they didn't have which we do at our JCC is a drop off tot spot for kids while you work out. Apparently they had it in the past, but no longer. That kinda stinks. Did get a nice workout in and it wasn't too busy mid morning. Great location and very modern. Plenty of space for Manhattan. Huh. This is a really nice place in a way that kind of makes me sad that I'm not Jewish. It's clean, it's friendly, it's orderly. I went for the Mayim Bialik discussion and book signing event, and I kind of wish I had some reason to go back, but I'm not quite sure what to do at the JCC as a goy. I actually won a carseat from the raffle after the event, which was fantastic. The staff member who called me to coordinate pick-up and the security staff from whom I picked up the carseat were all awesomely professional and nice. read more

This place is huge!!! I take Krav Maga with James Sherman here. I haven't been to all the floors, but they seem to have nice facilities, and the variety of classes here is truly incredible. A little weirded out by the metal detector/bag check when you walk in though. I had developed a COPD because of the amount of chlorine/ammonia in their pool. I was told by my primary care doctor to immediately cease all exposure to the substance that triggered for what I had to terminate my membership, (I've been a pool member at the JCC Manhattan for almost 2 years), so I called their membership office. At first, I was told that I had to wait since they already charged me for the upcoming month. I thought that was definitely not right nor fair since it was a health issue caused entirely by their inability to comply with legal sanitation controls. I decided to email the Director of Member Services, Alex Clavijo, directly, and she responded relatively soon. She, understood the problem and corrected the situation as soon as she could. I believe they should definitely monitor more how the pool is sanitized and maintain. It is a shame that such beautiful facility can become so harmful. read more

I only use the GYM here. Very good place to work out, bright with lots of windows and clean. They just upgraded the TVs and added more equipment, though that has made it a little crowded. Relaxed & non-intimidating atmosphere, people of all ages working out, mostly white and middle class. Women's locker room is a little cozy, but they have amenities like hair dryers, moisturizer, etc. Be warned if you go during the day because the JCC is very child friendly and it can get kind of hectic. Worked with one trainer and was under-impressed, adequate but not great. Not as posh as the new Equinox across the street, but reasonably priced, and seem to offer a greater range of classes. read more

I LOVE this place. We have a family health club membership and this place is so spacious, accommodating and clean that we're motivated to use this gym often! And that's really saying something. The equipment is really updated, with top of the line treadmills and elliptical machines that can integrate with Nike Plus and have TVs built into them. The stretching area is large with plentiful mats and balls. There are a ton of weight machines, and I've never encountered a line for any machine whatsoever, even during rush hours. The front desk and sales office is really nice. I love Beth - I haven't found a more gracious person. You'll find all types of people working out here, from the crazy, incredibly fit athlete going full tilt on the treadmill to the old grandmother working her biceps on a weight machine. Everybody is friendly, but I do wish more people would wipe off their machines after use. I mean, the wipeys are right there! Anyway, this issue is circumvented by wiping the machine yourself before using it. I'm really happy I work out here. read more

I LOVE the JCC and normally would give this 5 stars. Pool and locker room are great...and can't say enough about all the great programs they have. Yet, I am giving them only 3 stars today because I dealt with the RUDDEST, MOST INCOMPETENT membership representative today...Jacquel. She sounded very "rushed" on the phone with me. I was trying to renew my membership...and she just wanted nothing to do with me because I wasnt a "new" sale for her. She was incredibly rude...wanted to pass me on to someone else and asked me to call back at another time... Hey..the JCC is a VERY civilized place and I was just SHOCKED that this "membership consultant" was SO RUDE. This gal Jaquel does not belong at the JCC... a civilized place. Get rid ofher her...she does not share the values of all us at the JCC... read more

There are very few heated pools in the city. The Jewish Community Center in Manhattan has a 25-meter heated lap lane pool & adjustable-depth training pool with phenomenal city views. It is much cleaner than any of the YMCA's and the people are friendlier. There are all kinds of interesting cultural programs and even a "Shabbat shabbang" on Friday nights. I have taken the Alexander technique. I like the respect given in classes not just this class but all classes given to all belief systems where you are not forced to accept the beliefs of those teaching that might not be in line with yours. That is the strength of this entire center. I have been to many different health centers where the teacher has found a method that works for them and insists it is the only truth out there. But worse are those people and places where the truth is fake and has no REAL benefit. Pretend Yoga teachers and the like. But it isn't that way here. I found it all to be effective and genuine. There are support groups for illness and stress reduction not just for the sick but for their families which in my opinion from my experience is more important. Families can go absolutely nuts when you get a diagnosis of cancer,or any other major illness and these support groups help them to cope which also helps you the sick person because then you don't have to deal with taking care of the emotional needs of loved ones who have no coping skills or no frame of reference for dealing with a major illness. I actually found this because I saw a review for a Jewish community center in California on another Yelpers page. I thought this is NYC we have them and this sounds like a great idea. So I signed up with NY Cares to throw little kids in the pool I mean help them learn to swim and play games and drown them I mean play games. And it's every other week at the JCC on the UWS. And it's an awesome facility. I am going to join it myself, and go work out with da Jews. read more

Although I have belonged to many gyms before, the JCC is my favorite. It has everything you need, including a surprisingly great weights facility, so that I can get fully jacked. Or something. It has one of the only 25 meter pools in Manhattan. The locker room is great and you can steam, which is sometimes the only reason I can get myself to go. And the membership staff is incredibly nice. As if this cake needed icing, the location is incredibly convenient (so long Chelsea Piers!). LOVE. read more

Great gym facilities. I love David Barton's facilities, but the crowd seems a little superficial. The JCC has brand new modern facilities, a full lap pool, towel service, steam room, and toiletries. Last time I checked, it is a little cheaper as well. There also a gym membership discount if you are under 25. read more

New to NYC and the JCC I was very impressed with the instructor Sarah Shaikh. She was my instructor for a cycling class and I can't say enough wonderful things about her and the class. I greatly enjoy biking outside but haven't participated in a lot of cycling classes but she made me feel very comfortable throughout the class. Her great energy and soothing voice made the ride more then enjoyable! I highly recommend taking any class with Sarah! read more

My experience only goes as far as their screening room and it was excellent. We were there for the screening of "5 broken cameras" (oscar nom doc) with Mike Moore conducting the Q&A over Skype with one of the directors from Israel. The whole event went on beautifully, and the skype connection served through a projector onto a very large screen - was flawless. The room itself is very spacious, easily 200 ppl capacity was packed.
