Some definition to my abs courtesy of Pure Barre Central Park South's Pure Empower and Pure Reform classes.
Christine K.

This Pure Barre location is actually at 200 Central Park South where it relocated at the end of August 2019. Initially I missed the old space at 60th & Columbus Circle, but I've come to really like the smaller studio for the Pure Empower and Pure Reform classes (I hardly break a sweat in the Classic class, so no longer attend those). A shout out to Collier (Pure Empower) and Sara (Pure Reform). I recently reached my 100th class with this studio, and highly recommend both Empower and Reform for the challenging workouts. The 2 pound weights on your wrists and then ankles really ramps up the effort in Empower; the only other workout where I sweat as much is on the Megaformer at SLT or at [solidcore]. The studio does not have showers, but there are lockers for your belongings, two changing rooms, and a single bathroom. A friendly and welcoming vibe overall. I found the barre classes at Exhale (just up the block) to feel a bit more like a cattle call with less individual attention, although I do go to Exhale to supplement my Pure Barre workouts depending on the class schedule. Physique 57 is also in the neighborhood; Signature II classes are a great, faster paced barre workout.

Location was semi confusion to find. Very lovely staff but I didn't feel I was getting as much out of it compared to Pilates or Barry's

I have taken both Core Fusion and Barre Method before and I honestly LOVE the Pure Barre on the Upper West Side.

It was very cold outside that Sunday and the studio did not seem to have adequate heat coming from radiators. There were small space heaters in the space but they were not doing much. The floor was ice cold. I kept my socks on during class and my toes were still numb. I had to wear my hoodie during the entire class. I also had to lay a blanket over my mat during class. The window in the back was letting in a draft and I could feel it a few feet away. I could not focus on the class and so this class was not as restorative as I would have liked. Unsure if I would come back if this is how unregulated the temperature is all the time. I can only imagine that the summer must be stifling hot. FYI, The studio is up a flight of stairs, if stairs are an issue for you.

Everyone working and attending class are very friendly. They have lots of storage for everyone's personal belongings and an area to freshen up and fill up your water bottle. It feels very clean. Classes move fast with high reps that really make you feel the burn, targeting all major muscle groups in the upper body, lower body, glutes, and core. One thing I really like about Physique 57 is that the instructors do a good job of integrating rhythm/musicality into the exercises and maintaining an upbeat atmosphere throughout class. They're also great about providing individual attention and correcting form when necessary. In terms of the studio, I've visited all 3 studios in SoHo, UES, and NoMad. The NoMad location, which just opened a few months ago, is extremely new and by far the most gorgeous and spacious of the three!

I think they've been doing well with this and continuing to clean between classes. Masks no longer required in class. They've recently had a lot of new "deals" which is nice for regulars like myself. I really miss the annual unlimited, because I am paying so much more lately to take fewer classes. Thankfully, they're doing a summer three month unlimited -- I hope they continue something beyond that. More recently, I've been interacting with Brigid, their customer experience manager. I can really tell a difference in the quality of customer service since she's come on board -- she is very responsive and so pleasant, and she is extremely client oriented. For example, they transitioned from one fitness app to another to book classes, and it's been a problematic transition in so many ways. Not only did Brigid fix the issues, she also gave me some extra classes for the trouble. I finally feel valued for being a loyal client (there was a point in time when I wasn't feeling such a way). When there were some further issues, I reached out to her and she's been working through all of those issues with me. Can't say enough positive things about her. My only reason for dropping a star is that showers are still not back. I understood this immediately post pandemic (and they had to consolidate four studios' worth of belongings into one), but it's really difficult to schedule your day and get around the city without a shower option. I understand that times are tough, but class prices are higher than before, yet we also lack the amenities that we had before (showers, towels). Showers seem to be back at most other fitness studios. If the showers came back, I would definitely be more encouraged to take additional classes. The scheduling game is more of a challenge with this.

Just started my pilates/barre journey, and love Pure Barre! Great for a recovery class from…read morelagree/solidcore or strength training as each class stretches your body out extremely well. The space of the class brings your mind to a soft meditative focus. They have a variety of classes from classic (medium difficulty), define (greater focus on core and strength), and align (stretch/recovery). I've gone to the trifecta of locations (Greenwich, Flatiron, and Williamsburg), and I think this location is one of my favorites with proximity to Union Sq trains and the open space of the studio. Awesome instructors who are very supportive. Class goes quickly since it's mixed with regulars who have often gone to Pure Barre in the past, but usually if you're newer the instructor pays more attention to your form and helps. After a few classes, you learn the regular moves + positions and you're able to get a grasp much better on how your form should be. Flatiron Pure Barre is paired in a space with Cyclebar and has a massive selection of lockers + showers, Williamsburg has great lockers (both locking and shelves) but is smaller, and Union Square has nice locking lockers and changing areas. **NOTE: MAKE SURE TO BRING GRIPPY SOCKS (barre socks) or else you'll end up paying ~$20 for the socks they have in the studio (which are nice but let's be real no one should be paying $20 for grippy socks)

For an absolute beginner, the class moves quite fast, and although I was able to keep up, there were some instances where I was a bit lost. The entire class was new, and I noticed the same thing with a few of the other participants. Otherwise, it is a good class, and I was thoroughly sore the next day (a good sore). This class works you out very well. If you have injuries, just let your instructor know, and they will show you alternative movements. It's worth a test run. Just get your heating pads, icy hot and aspirin ready.

I've also been wanting to try Solidcore back at home, so it worked out that I got to try Solidcore for my drop-in visit. I noticed that the studio was minimal. They didn't appear to sell any merch, water, or even grip socks (I forgot mine). That being said, i was informed that I could use the megareformer with barefeet. I was relieved that I wasn't going to be denied for class! I noticed that was actually a common practice, unlike my home studio that requires grip socks during class. The Solidcore space reminded me a lot like how Soul Cycle is. Dimly lit, music bumping, basically working out in a club. I'm here for it. I took Marcus' 11:15am full body class, and it was fantastic. He was such a great instructor and helped to encourage deeper or more challenging movements by adjusting my form. I also appreciated him spending the time to go over how their megareformers worked. Only major difference I saw was the location of the springs on the machine, but I also thought it was cool how the resistance of the springs were recommended based on how far along you are in your Solidcore practice.

Never have I come across a fitness center that charges you to put your membership on pause or charges you for another month of membership even if you can't attend the classes because they want at least 30 days notice prior to cancellation. They also charge you for individual class cancellations if they were made 10-12 hours before the start of class as well as no shows... in any case, they should be grateful if that happened because it makes room for another to sign up. It's really off-putting and it shows that they are money-hungry without any consideration for their members. Things could come up in the last minute and not everyone is in the city full time. So the wellness aspect of this fitness center is pretty much lacking... I initially wanted to pause my membership for a few months and they said there's a fee to pause membership which was a surprise and it made absolutely no sense to me. So I changed my mind and decided opt for cancellation. Then they came up with all sorts of excuses, from saying that I had signed a contract which I never did... to asking me to email them a copy of a doctor's note which I don't have because it's not medical related... I just want my membership cancelled because I found the fees to be unethical. I just don't like unethical and controlling practices and I tend to avoid them... end of story. And yes they ended up charging me for another month knowing that I wouldn't be attending and said that I can give it to my friends or family which was so wrong... I ended up calling the credit card company to reverse it.
