Jim Fisher was my original funding specialist. Marlin was willing to take a chance on me with very little to no prior business credit history. My personal credit was middle of the road and hence I received an interest rate that was less than desirable, but they provided the funding that I needed. I went back 2 years later after several months of positive payment history to get additional funding and they were eager to supply the funding I needed for my next project. My personal credit had risen over 100 points and my rate was cut in half for the following loan. Erick Dronski was my next funding specialist after Jim left the company during the pandemic. Erick provided the information needed in a timely manner. The only reason these guys don't get 5 stars is because the type of lending they do does not offer a pre-payment interest savings benefit. They loan you P and calculate I for full term and stick it to you without the option to save interest by paying off your loan early. So, even though now that my business is flourishing and I am able to pay this loan off 24 months early, there is no point in doing so. I will be paying the same amount over 24 months as I will if I were to pay it off today. I don't agree with this type of lending, but I can't say too much because they were there when others turned me away. It is possible that I will do business with them again in the future, but now that my business credit is established and my personal credit is nearing perfection, they will likely have to come to the table with some pretty attractive rates. read more

Absolutely Horrible. Nasty ass people. They financed a vehicle for us which took 6 months to License and when we were finally able to drive it required 4,000 of repairs. They sold the vehilce knowing full well it couldn't be licensed. Stuck us with thousands in fees when we were able to License vehicle Regardless, they demanded payments be made and even pulled unauthorized funds from my account! read more

The auto emails and return process needs improvement. Once I was getting toward the end of my lease I was able to bi-pass other people and get some straight answers to my questions. Very difficult company to work with. We are a managing agent for a Condominium. There are financial controls in place to make sure that the client's funds are protected from misuse. Procedurally, we get and invoice, send it to our A/P team, then it gets reviewed to make sure it is not a duplicate. Then we code it to a G/L and checks get cut. Because there are two separate entities sharing the expense, two checks, for half of the invoice amount, are cut and mailed at the same time. Per their request, they asked us to call in a payment to avoid delays as there is only a 15 day window between the time they prepare the invoice to the time they expect a check in hand. Our A/P department called them, but because the bill is split they ended up having to send checks anyway. Two checks were sent and they only posted one. But they were in the same envelope! Every month there is a different issue. They didn't get the payment, we have to communicate with them, they say its late or they didn't get it, and then we get statements saying we are delinquent. We have NO other issues with vendors we work with, but every month we have to spend time correcting or addressing a problem with Marlin. We do not know why. The people we speak with try to be helpful, this isn't a company with rude people handling calls. But we spend several hours a month trying to get this account sorted. read more

Stay far away from this company unless you want to pay double the cost of whatever piece of large equipment you're purchasing. Like many other reviews, they were not honest about the additional interest charges that occur and that you are responsible for whether you pay it off early or not. The representative working with me kept using the word lease up until the time that i signed the "Financial Agreement". I purchased a $19,800 dance floor for a dance studio that I opened up and by the time i'm finished paying it off, it will have cost me over $40,000. Shady is the best word that I can find to describe this company. They charge you these outrageous late payment fees and are quick to hound your place of business if you are running a day behind on a payment. Probably one of the most regretful transactions that i've ever done. I'll chalk it up to lesson learned. PS, i'm not interested in your generic automated response to this review. Update: Briana contacted me and worked diligently to fix the problems. She was successful with all but one. They charged me for insurance when I had and proved I had insurance. The reason given is it took me a few months to add them to the policy. The asset was insured since day one, listing them isn't required for it to be covered. All in all an adequate but not completely satisfying resolution. What a train wreck of a finance company. I purchased a copier and asked to lease it. They connected me with Marlin. The copier company made a mistake and gave them them wrong company - same company name, different city. That started a chain reaction that ended in all sorts of charges and fees. Marlin has been horrible with helping us clear it up. I ended up just paying it and moving on. read more

this place is a scam, no one will give you the accurate numbers for a loan break down. We took a loan for 45000.00 and it shows we owe 68000.00 how did that happen , and when we ask the company , they give us the runaround and will not disclose to us and finance charges or tax. Never let anyone sign you up with this company for a lease or anything else. Stay Away! This is a very disreputable company and they have more "Creative ways" to finance and add in fees than there are grains of sand on this earth. I ordered equipment from Janitor's Closet in Tampa, Florida and told them under no circumstances did I want a lease. I wanted nothing but a straight loan. They called be back and said they had approved me for an 8% equipment loan from Marlin Bank and I agreed. I drove our van down to Tampa over the weekend to have the equipment installed on Monday. On Saturday night I received the worst news in my life, that my daughter who only days before had turned 25 was dead. Needless to say My son and I drove all night night Saturday and the installation was put off. Two days after my daughters funeral we returned to have the equipment installed. All I wanted to do was get it done and get out of there because of my emotional state so I didn't do due diligence when I signed those papers. It was indeed not only a lease but the worst possible kind of lease and nowhere close to 8%. I'm afraid to set up automatic payment with these people because I don't trust anything these people say. I'm told there's no prepay penalty but I'm sure that's a lie. (They added hundreds of dollars in "Rental Fees?" which they told me on the phone were not supposed to have been added and would be removed but are still on my account) You'd be better off putting your equipment purchases on your highest % rip off rate worst credit card you own than dealing with these people. We haven't even put the equipment into service and I'm debating whether to give these people another dime or to just return it to Janitor's Closet and tell them to take this stuff out. read more

1 star is too high of a rating. I have a loan from this Marlin, Ive never missed any payments and have never had any issues with them. Even during the beginning of the pandemic, I was able AND willing to continue making my payments as I was fortunate enough to be an essential business and keep my doors open. I never told them to seize payments or give me some kind of break, I never contacted them as I had no reason to. However in April, out of nowhere, THEY (Marlin) cancelled their auto payments from my bank account without my knowledge. Because I had always had auto payments, the last thing on my mind was to make sure they made their scheduled transactions. Yesterday I received a letter in the mail telling me its MY fault and Im subject to late fees aswell as having my "delinquencies" reported to Dun & Bradstreet and PayNet. I have tried on multiple occasions to get in touch with them ever since I learned they stopped their auto payments back in June. It took me multiple calls to finally get ahold of a rep, who did nothing but bounce me around. Eventually I was advised to file for an "extension" on the lease, which I did because I just wanted to get on with it and get back to work and life. As stated earlier, I got a letter in the mail yesterday and immediately tried to contact them. I spent about 20 minutes on the phone waiting to be connected to a rep and had to hang up because I had customers come in. Today, I spent about 45 minutes on wait to no avail. I have never written a review for any company because as a business owner, understand set backs and flops, we're all human and mistakes can and do happen. But this is so incredibly frustrating, I cannot get ahold of this company to fix a problem that THEY made for themselves, so hopefully they see this review and finally get back to me. In 4 years Ive never missed a payment, and I have a little over a grand ($1,000) left on the loan, which is honestly NOTHING compared to the original loan, and they are acting this way. Their customer service told my my equipment finance agreement is not a loan and therefore they don't charge interest. However, there is a vast difference in the amount of the equipment financed and the total of the payments. SCAM BUSINESS/ BEWARE/ HAVE ATTORNEY READ CONTRACT. 1) Late fees are more than the lease charge. ie: contract payment $88.48/mo. late charge $99.50/mo. for one day late, no grace period. The invoice usually arrives my office after the due date! They mail invoice 22 days before due date. Not enough time to receive, pay and mail payment back, conveniently kicking in late fees. I believe that they have intentionally set up a system stacking the deck against small businesses so that they can charge these fees. This is where they make their money. read more

The pandemic closed my shop and they threat to charge me the entire contract after I paid for 30 months like clockwork. This company treats an individual regular PRINTER lease like a multimillion dollar contract. They are relentless with calls and emails, and again they always remind you of how serious it is that despite that I'm almost broke. My lease was only $200 a month, and only had 24 months pending. Here are the facts: -An individual called Marlin representing himself as my landlord - he wasn't. - Said Individual purported that I was evicted - I wasn't. - Marlin sold my contract to said individual without notifying me of their intent to do so at beginning of August and without proper due diligence. -I received a letter from Marlin 3 weeks later that my account was in default and was at risk unless payment was made by the end of August despite contract already being sold. -Marlin attempted to debit my bank account for that same contract the month of September. This banking institution is not someone you would need to bank with. They will add hidden fees and list them as other charges. They charged me $110.00 extra on my account and said it was for property tax on my item (not a vehicle or home) But when you look at statement it says $0.00 charged for property tax. It's listed as billing charge $110.00. They also charged for insurance when I already have insurance. Asked for payoff and price went up 350.00 more than I owed. This is the worst company you can ever get associated with. I made a mistake of getting a loan for an Ice Machine (cost maximum $2k) ended up paying more than $6K. They are not upfront on the cost details and additional costs related to insurance, property taxes, monthly fee, etc.,etc., and make you pay interest even if you are paying early. Scam, scam, scam!! I will never do business with these snakes ever again. We now are paying our bill almost 30 days EARLY just so we incur no fake late fees. The so-called property tax amount they tack on each year has never been proven to be accurate even though we have made repeated requests for a copy of the tax bill! I have another year on this lease and it just sickens me. The equipment I leased is worth about 1/10th of what I will have paid once the lease is up. It was foolish of me to get talked into this one, but Marlin has made me a believer in never signing another lease agreement with a bank or financial institution I cannot visit face to face. These guys are terrible!!! We paid our lease term in full and they added unauthorized charges at the end. We refused to pay since they were not a part of the original agreement. This set their collections machine in motion with threatening letters, rude and unrelenting phone calls, etc. This went on for five years until finally we got someone on the phone that agree that the charges were in error. They said they would take them off. There was never a sorry or an apology or anything like that. Everything was going well until......... We found a charge on our account that did not line up. Upon calling Marlin said it was for property tax. We asked them to prove that they had been charged, they could not. We also went to our state and county offices and the treasurer office to see if Marlin had been charged property tax. The said "property tax" was never charged to them but they charged us anyway, but for what? An amount that was never charged to them? Their response was to send us a copy of the signed contract. This is the slowest leasing company we have ever dealt with . Marlin organized two leases with our customer. We are the seller and our customer organized the lease for roughly 12K and our customer waited over a week for the lease to be approved and eventually funded. We expected overnight delivery of a check but Marlin sent it on a Thursday and it arrived on a Monday. The second add/on related lease for over 5K request was submitted on a March 2nd and took until March 8th for us to receive a check. Other leasing firms we have worked with have been almost aggressive requesting equipment lists and invoices. Find a smaller leasing company. They are typically are chomping at the bit to get a lease finalized. I have had a account with marlin sense 2017. Up until now I thought nothing but good things about them. Recently I was looking to purchase new equipment for my shop. The company got me rates from their in house financing. I thought they were horrible $17000 to finance $7000 worth of equipment. I decided to look into my contracts through marlin and thought about contacting them about this new equipment. I soon realized my contracts were not what I thought they were. I feel I was mislead on my initial contracts weather it was the vender or marlin. I'm a young business owner and really never understood what the contracts said. I knew I needed the equipment and could afford the payment. I signed them in a rush without really reading into them. I know that is my fault. I have come to find I will be paying more than $40000 for $26000 worth of equipment. I feel that's a bit over the top. I found out about all of this in October. I ended up financing equipment through another company recently called taycor. I found out this morning that marlin and taycor must be related in some way because the new contract showed up on my marlin account. I wouldn't have financed through tatcor if I had known. I really didn't want to give marlin any more of my money. I called awhile back to see if there was any chance of renegotiating my contracts but had no luck. I'm not out to bash marlin. Marlin has not asked me to write this review and I do so of my own accord without compensation. My business has financed about $250,000 of equipment over the past 5 years with Marlin. First with their leasing company and then with the bank side of their operations. Marlin financed our business that few at the time would consider giving money to. I run a equipment rental company and after the financial market meltdown it was hard for us to get financing for the type of business we are and the asset we had wanted to finance. We paid off the first couple of contracts and it opened up a much larger financing approval at a rate that even my bank would be hard pressed to lend at. I am not saying Marlin is perfect. The way they have quoted rates to me a few years back personally is not transparent and in my opinion, not an an industry standard. It could have been that specific salesperson at Marlin. My recent experiences have been great. Kudos to Brian McMahon, Tom Lockhart and Nick Polaise for their efforts. Now we have grown our business ten fold in the last five years with millions of dollars in equipment financing borrowed and paid off from a number of commercial banks including Marlin. With our financing history we are able to secure financing without a personal guarantee at rates that are highly competitive. Something your bank will probably never be able to offer. I can get a huge line of credit at our bank but choose not to because of the control they want on our business. I would say that if you are disappointed with Marlin, then you should look at yourself first. Harsh words I know. As business owners we should be making ourselves aware of the contracts we are agreeing to and that we should know better to take anyone's word as a contract. Yes, there can be gotcha's in a leasing contract. There will be in every contract. Contracts are written by a single party to benefit that party and not you. It's your job as a business owner to scrutinize every transaction before agreeing to it and making the changes that benefit you before signing. Some tips on financing with any bank. Before applying, get a sense of your personal and business credit. Correct any mistakes. For personal credit get your real FICO score for all three bureaus. For business credit use Dun and Bradstreet. Equifax and Experian also have a commercial credit reporting division. There's also PayNet which is widely used to report lease and net payment accounts. You'll spend a couple hundred getting all this information but it is invaluable to know what your credit looks like prior to applying. If you have bad credit, a startup company, or a underperforming or undesirable business classification you will pay higher rates or be denied entirely. Verify the type of financing to make sure it is in line with your business needs and life of the equipment. e.g. $1 buyout or EFA on asset likely to have significant value at end of term or you will likely want to keep. FMV on asset likely to have little value (use or value) to business at end of term. Ensure the equipment will add a significant multiple of the investment to your bottom line. E.g. $200 monthly cost adds $800 to bottom line. 36 month term with $1 buyout equals $7201 investment which enables at $28800 return + value of the asset at end of term. Totally worth it! If you cannot justify an equipment purchase without a reasonable return on your investment then do not buy it. Request documentation of all fees. UCC fees, Wire fees, Doc fees, Inspection fees.. These are negotiable! Make sure all fields of the contract are filled out before signing. Monthly payment, Term length, Advance or Deposit amounts, Commencement or start date. If there's something you don't understand, google it or better yet, hire an attorney. A $500 investment for a licensed attorney could save you tens of thousands of dollars. Get a quote from other banks or leasing agents. Do not allow them to pull your personal credit each time. Ask them to give you a quote based on your personal and business credit findings with the understanding that if figures are different at the time then the quote may not be valid. Sign up for automatic payments immediately! You can do this by signing up online or by getting the forms from customer service. The complaints about Marlin not offering autopay make no sense at all. I have paid my 8+ contracts for years on ACH and there was never a late charge. Get a quote from other Vendors! I require my staff to get three quotes. You'd be surprised what you can save when you shop around. Thanks for reading. Throughout our communication over the last couple of months, we have had the opportunity to speak to a live person only a couple of times, all other calls have been met with "the person is not available."
