There are a bunch of free samples, which is great, but the prices are tourist trap elevated - not outrageous, but a bit more than you'd pay at a well socked grocery store in the area. Stopped in during a weekend visiting family, and wowza--this place is a full-on experience! Definitely give yourself time to explore because there is a ton to see and sample. The selection is massive: cheeses of all kinds (with samples!), meats, candied nuts, chocolates, jams--you name it. The fresh cheese was absolutely delicious, and yes, it squeaked like proper fresh cheese should. There's a bar where you can grab drinks and food. I smelled the fried cheese curds the moment we walked in--seriously mouthwatering--but we were too full to order anything. There was also a line for ice cream, so clearly we weren't the only ones tempted. They also have a full section for fun merchandise, including T-shirts, old-fashioned candy, toys, and quirky gifts. We stopped into Mars Cheese Castle last month on the way home from hanging out at Apple Holler. This spot has SO MANY Wine and Cheese options!!! We bought a couple of bottles of mead that we can't find in Las Vegas, and then popped over to the bar for a beer. We tried two local beers that were absolutely delicious, and ordered the "junior" charcuterie board. This thing was enormous! I'd love to see what the big version looks like, but as it was, we took a lot of it home because we'd had a big breakfast. Service in the bar was stellar. Our bartender, Lisa, gave great recommendations, and was lovely to chat with. I highly recommend stopping in if you're in the area! I know we'll be back on our next visit!!! read more

Like a mirage emerging from a fever dream, Mars Cheese Castle appeared out of nowhere as I was driving on the interstate in Wisconsin. I was in need of a potty break and a place to get a Wisconsin souvenir, and because I manifested this place into being, I stopped at this castle of cheese as soon as I spotted it. It proved to be the perfect place to use the restroom and get something to eat! I had heard that Wisconsin is the place to get a kringle -- a sweet pastry filled with cheese or cherry preserves or blueberry jam or other things. I got a cherry one to take home. There's a big display case of Mars' Cheese Castle kringles near the entrance. There's also lots of cheese here. You'll find cheese curds, string cheese, cheese boards, and everything you can think of that might go with cheese, like crackers, chocolate, bread and other delicious things. Plus fudge, local beer (New Glarus Spotted Cow) and other fun foods. This is basically a big cheese shop with local goodies everywhere. I had wanted to get a food gift while I was in Wisconsin, and Mars' Cheese Shop proved to be a great place to find one. There are two places to park here at Mars' Cheese Castle: the parking lot for the store, and the parking lot for the bar area. (P.S. There is a bar here.) It's all the same parking lot, though. I parked at the bar and then had to walk a tiny bit to get to the store, but it was all good. There are a LOT of cheese shops in Wisconsin, and while this may or may not be the best one, it's probably the most fun one! The castle theme is a hoot, and the selection of cheeses is pretty amazing for this Texan. First visited on a sightseeing trip from Chicago to Milwaukee and was drawn in by the name. Recently went back on our way to Road America and again found it enjoyable, although they didn't have as many varieties of cheese out to sample as they did on our first visit. It's way more than a cheese shop, almost more of a liquor store, with a big beer cave, a very generous cooler, and a spirits department. There's a counter service restaurant that had terrific sandwiches way above your typical roadside stop, not to mention the outstanding cheese curds. There's also a tavern with separate entry attached, which we didn't visit but which seems to be very popular given the number of cars parked on that side of the building. Stocked up on some great Wisconsin beers and cheeses. Plenty of parking, shopping carts to load up cases of beer, and numerous checkout stands. read more

What the actual F? We had never been to Wisconsin and were interested in seeing what this state had to offer, so a friend recommended the Mars Cheese Castle as a way to scratch that itch without having to wander too far from Chicago. I'm not sure that anything could have prepared us for what we encountered. Like the Disney World of cheese, maybe? And all kinds of things that you could purchase. I couldn't resist picking up a hair clip in the shape of a cow, because where else would I find something like that?! My friend recommended that we sit at the bar and have a brandy old fashioned along with the cheese spread. It was a Saturday afternoon and quite busy, so we had to wait a little while before finding two seats. Also, there is really no direction on what you're supposed to do, how to order, etc. and no hostess for the bar area that we could find. The cheese spread appeared to be complimentary (if it wasn't, oops, we didn't pay for it) as we observed others approaching the communal serving station and helping themselves. There was another food area but the line was really long and thankfully they told us that it would take a while for the food to be ready, so we decided to pass and get cheese curds elsewhere. For us locals it a place to meet for a cocktail or famous Bloody Mary and rub shoulders with those that frequent the establishment. This is a review immediately suffering from Yelp's stubbornness in not allowing reviewers to use half stars. I want to give the place a 3.5 out of 5 review but can't. Unfortunately, they are closer to a three than a four star review. First, this is always a fun, quick stop on the way to or from the Windy City. It is clean, there are lots of things to look at and stopping gives you an opportunity to refresh before you continue on the way. If you want a souvenir of Wisconsin, you can find it there. Food items, stickers , t-shirts, booze, they offer all of it. All of it comes at a high prices, but if you really need something to remember your trip by, they have. More specifically, I wanted to do a review including the little cafe they have at the back of the store. It is good enough to fill your belly before you jump back in the SUV. The prices aren't exorbitant and the portion size is reasonable. Keep in mind, you'll need to salt, pepper and condiment your food to taste, but it is edible. If you are as lucky as we were, it will also be served to you by several people who act like they would love to be anywhere other than behind the counter of the cafe (of course the lady bartending seemed equally unenthusiastic to be collecting a paycheck). I'll continue to stop by, I will probably just choose my food from somewhere else in the area. read more

Cheese Castle is one of those I wouldn't travel miles out of my way to visit places, but if you're traveling south to visit Illinois and coming from anywhere north of Milwaukee it's a great stop so your wife and kids can hit the bathroom. While there you might as well take advantage of picking up a craft beer, fresh bakery or of course fresh cheese. A convenient restaurant or snack counter to feed the kids and the chance to pick up just about anything that says Wisconsin. We did a Jeep takeover here. This place is soooo awesome, too much to see. Delicious cheeses and sausages. I loved the bar! Every bar should offer free cheese and crackers. The bloody mary was too good, they add this pickled asparagus, which was delicious. You can buy them in a jar too, which I did. The bartenders were really nice and attentive. We were on our way from Milwaukee to Chicago and we saw this castle off the freeway. It's on its own off the freeway. There's a giant bar on one side and the other side it's a grocery store. They have so much cheese and other products. You can taste a few cheese . Overall a pretty good stop to try a lot of cheese. read more
