In my opinion the best pizza in DC, and maybe the best caesar salad in DC as well. This place is not a tourist spot, is not on the way from much unless you live in the neighborhood, and isn't open on Mondays or Tuesdays, but if you can get here, it is AMAZING pizza. Every cocktail i've had is well balanced and perfectly served. I'm not sure if they batch them or what the deal is, but they're all good and highly consistent. The caesar salad is out of this world and has amazing breadcrumbs made from their pizza dough and a good amount of anchovy on it. It is what we want in a caesar salad and I LOVE it. I also like the whipped ricotta quite a bit, but don't get that intsead of a pizza - you'll be sad if you do - get it in addition to the pizza! The pizza list changes with frequency, you can look up the specials on the internet, they keep their website up to date unlike many other restaurants. The pepperoni and peppers i think is relatively consistent and is great. I've had it or something quite similar a couple times. I've also had the white pie more than once and that is great. this time they had a ramp pie and I added nduja to it and it was maybe one of the best pizzas i've ever had....truly out of this world! A true hidden gem! Delicious Greek pizza with seasonal ingredients in the Mount Pleasant neighborhood. We made a reservation (highly encouraged) on a Friday evening - space was a bit crowded when we were seated at counter but we enjoyed watching the pizzas being made. We started with a Caesar salad (worth the hype) and a 500 ml bottle of a Greek wine ($16, which seemed very reasonable). We absolutely love Martha Dear, but our main complaint is that they close WAY too early and such limited hours. This is the ultimate neighborhood spot, with some delicious pizza, wine and Greek appetizers. It is closed on both Mondays and Tuesdays. But then is only open from 5 to 8:30 PM. Many times, they shut down even earlier if the weather isn't great. We love coming to this restaurant but due to the limited hours, it's hard to plan a trip here. It is a 5 star experience but would love to be a regular if they stayed open a bit later. read more

A very nice hidden gem in Mt. Pleasant! I love how open the kitchen area is and how initiate the restaurant feels. You really feel like you're part of the action here. Highlight of the meal: the halloumi pizza! The crust was great, the seasoning was perfect, and the halloumi absolutely hit the spot. I ordered it with dill sauce on the side, and it absolutely slapped. Hands down the best pizza I've had in DC. Everything else was a little lackluster. I loved the flavor of the spanakopita toast but was really put off by the high price point. The baklava cheesecake was a little soggy, and the olive oil cake was slightly too salty. For the high price, I don't think the quantity and quality were totally there, but it was close! I would come back here again specifically for that halloumi pizza. Outside of that, it's not bad! Came here to catch up with a friend during the week. We were quickly seated and it wasn't too busy on a Tuesday evening. The inside is dimly lit and kind of romantic - great for date night! We had some trouble with the menu since there weren't any physical menus available. The QR code for the menu wouldn't load on our phones and we had not so great cell service in the restaurant and couldn't connect to the WiFi. Our sever came to our rescue with a separate phone where the menu was preloaded, but it was still a pain to have to share a phone and pinch and zoom. We each ordered a pizza and shared. I got the White Pie which contained garlic, basil, mozzarella, kefalograviera, myzithra, and lemon. I was pleasantly surprised by how well all the different cheeses worked. I'm a big fan! Ok long overdue update, Martha Dear is an awesome spot. Not quite neapolitan for me but a very good pie, nice chewy dough, great toppings and they do lots of seasonal stuff. The apps and salads are great. Service is good. Drink/wine list is pretty short, most of the wines are Greek/Mediterranean at least offered by the glass. It gets busy but still possible to walk in. Once ordered, food comes pretty quickly. Main issue is they have a barcode menu, with absolutely no service down there and they don't offer guest wifi. So if you don't have service, you have to wait for the single iPad with the menu to look things over (it took 10 minutes sitting before I could even look at a menu - they probably need another 1-2 ipads if they're gonna do things this way). read more

I was really not impressed by this place. It's just another wannabe pizza place with some fancy sounding things on the menu but really all not to quality. Let's start with their tiny pizza. You can always judge a pizza place by its margherita (which they have with some modifications that they call "classic cheese"). They have a gas oven that takes a very long time to cook the pizza. The dough is slightly thick and a very plain flavor. I've been doing sourdough for many years, and there is no way this is full sourdough. At best its sourdough mixed into artificial yeast dough. (artificial yeast kills natural yeast and therefore you benefit just a bit from the sour flavor). Or they don't proof it enough to develop a more complex flavor. In any case, the tomato sauce they use is bitter and overbearing (almost as if it was made with concentrate). With such overpowering tomato flavor you can barely taste the mozzarella (not even the basil). As the pizza spends too much time in the gas oven, you get a dark char (you can see from a lot of the pics online) rather than the light char from a 90 second pizza. It's somewhere between an American style and Italian style pizza. In general, well below the quality you could get from renown places like 2Amys, Etto or the original Menomale (at lower costs). Even Il Canale or Pupatella are are above this place. Only other thing I tried was the cesar's salad which was adimtedly pretty good. The biggest issue I had about this place was the service. The door staff was rude and unaccommodating. The place was empty. We came in at 6.50 and were forced to eat at the bar because they said they supposedly had reservations. I worked in the restaurant business long enough to know that they are pushed to fill bar seating prior to tables. I told them we would be done well before 7.30 to which I got a snarky remark that it wouldn't be enough time for us to fully enjoy the experience :-/ We were done around 7.30 and to no ones surprise there were tables still unseated. The ambiance is good. No complaints there. An overall score of 3 I think reflects what this place has to offer. With such good pizza places in DC, no point in coming back. read more

FOOD: So this place is known for its pizza, but we opted for a few non-za menu items! The mushroom moussaka was absolutely divine - rich without being overbearing, and perfectly cooked. The ribs were tangy with a kick of heat and sticky with honey the way they should be. We set some land speed records with how fast we are these! SERVICE: Our food came out so fast we barely had time to pull our silverware out - wow! Our server was attentive, kind, and gave great recommendations. Martha Dear is what Mount Pleasant is all about: quaint and quality. This pizza joint is a gem you don't want to miss. The pizza is delicious. They use high quality ingredients that shine. The white pie highlights the soft and sharp cheese grated across it, and the nduja pizza highlights a high quality nduja (a spicy, spreadable pork sausage from Italy). You don't need to add toppings, the pizzas are thoughtfully designed. And the crust is perfect! The chocolate olive oil cake is also delicious. While it's tempting to go upstairs to Mount Pleasant Ice Cream (which is also great), I highly recommend ordering this cake. It's rich and decadent. They should offer to serve it a La mode with ice cream from upstairs! The atmosphere inside is intimate and cozy. Warm and softly lit. Any table is a great table and if you sit at the bar you can watch them make pizzas and use the large pizza oven. They also have an outdoor area. Finally, the service is great. Having been on a bit of a pizza kick recently, the thin crust pizzas here were a bit hit or miss, but generally closer to a hit than a miss. Opening things up with cooked veggies, the broccoli rabe was a great start, not too large in portion, although in retrospect we all could have used a lot more veggies in our diet this trip... The tomato and cheese pizza came out first (spinach, cherry tomato, halloumi), and holy cow it was the best one by far. The balance and flavor of the thin crust with the perfect amount of cheese, aided by fresh cherry tomatoes and spinach... plus the extra flavor of the halloumi... sooooo good. We did a classic cheese with meat added as well as a 'nduja + peppers, neither was of the level of the first. Crusts were good but not quite as good as the tomato and cheese for some reason, and intensity of the 'nduja was not quite enough to keep up. Service was excellent and the decor inside appropriate, a bit dark, but given it was a whitewashed basement dominated by a bar and a pizza oven, everything melded together just about right. read more

The seasonal Halloumi, Spinach, and Butternut Squash Pizza is truly a culinary experience and bursting with flavor in every bite! The ingredients surprisingly blend really well together and perfectly complement the flavors. The chunky Halloumi cheese was delightful and have never spotted it on pizza! While I generally go with a simple and classic Margherita pizza, the unique pies loaded with toppings is the way to go! The Margherita pizza was a bit bland. The pies are quite tasty albeit not wood-fired (propane gas) and missing that smoky, charred taste and the crust was a bit burned. The cozy pizzeria is in the basement with no indoor seating (there's a great ice cream shop Mount Desert Island upstairs!) with al fresco dining in front of the restaurant. I went to Martha Dear because many people kept recommending it hailing it as one of the best pizzas in DC... I've had better in DC and wouldn't recommend Martha Dear for several reasons. The pizzas are pretty tiny and that would be okay if I enjoyed them but unfortunately, they fell flat. Their cheese pizza is nothing special it tastes like any standard pizza and the sauce needs a little more salt. I don't know how to describe the taste but it's a little flat. Their white does have a better taste and could have something going for it but the pizzas were cold and burnt so I couldn't rate it fully. I shared this feedback with staff and they said the pizzas were burnt it was Neapolitan style and approved by their chef. I've had Neapolitan and this pizza tasted burnt, not a "nice char." Take a look yourself and tell me this isn't burnt. Another thing is they don't have very great customer service. One they change all checks and take out orders with a "gratuity" but they don't even have the decency to pick up their phone, you'll have to ring several times before anyone picks up. And I get it you might be busy but when a staff did pick up they were rude and was slightly condescending. overall a negative experience. read more

The staff is very nice and the ambience is cozy. It seems like there's a lot of seating at the bar that is first come first serve so you probably okay without a reservation but come earlier. I wanted to like this place but the food was disappointing. We got the roasted root veggie salad where the flavors were nice but overall way too much dressing that soaked the salad and made it too heavy. We also got the nduja and pepper pizza, which was really just that - normal pizza with those two toppings that didn't really help differentiate it from a normal plain pizza for me. There was too much cheese and it made the top kind of soggy and just left pools of oil. We had some really creative drinks and a great asparagus and bean appetizer, as well as tasty olive oil cake. I didn't know really anything about the place going into dinner, but afterwards when I read a bit online about the couple that started the place I was unsurprised to learn they have a background in high end restaurants. Everything about the food here had that finesse of really gifted and trained cooking, all while maintaining a very approachable "neighborhood spot" vibe. The service was also tops. We were well looked after and had a great time talking with one of the owners. Overall, I think we may have found a new favorite spot in the neighborhood and I'm excited to come back. read more
