Astoria continues to be one of my favorite spots in DC. While the service can occasionally be a bit spotty, the food and overall vibe are exceptional. Every dish I've tried has been mouthwatering, consistently flavorful and generously portioned. We knew it was stone crab season, so we were excited to include this in our eats - we ordered the Mala Lobster, which was prepared in fermented chili sauce with ginger garlic scallion; we also ordered the Pea Shoots (stir-fried in garlic; we liked that this didn't come 'watery'), the Walnut Shrimp (with a nice honey sauce with candied walnuts), Mapo Tofu (with beef, chili, garlic, scallions, and sichuan peppercorns), and the OG La-Zi (a fried chicken thigh with peanuts, chili, and sichuan peppercorns). This is a hipster Asian Fusion-Street Food restaurant in Dupont Circle...in this long, retro train-esque layout. We sat right by the bar...quite tight, and not too comfy...and the table was too small for multiple small plates. This is one thing I still don't get...how restaurants that feature small plates have these teeny-tiny tables. How do they expect us to order several plates when we're given such a small table space?!? Makes no sense to me. ANYWAY, small space and table aside, I will say that it definitely had a cool vibe...with this retro jazz overhead music to match! We ordered Chili Wontons to share, then as entrees, I got the Dan Dan Noodles and my husband chose Crab Fried Rice. I personally loved the foods...but then I love Schezuan spicy flavors! My husband liked it, but wasn't too thrilled with it...but then he's been eating way too much Fried Rice on this trip lol. Def worth the hype! A smaller, darker place than I was expecting. They have goldfish as food to snack on. I loved the beef noodles so much, wow. I did enjoy the mapo tofu and mala ribs as well. The ribs feels like it's missing something to me; maybe needed rice or something lighter since it was a heavier dish, but still good. I'd say this place uses spice and mala well but in a balanced way so that it isn't too overpowering or spicy that people may think with Szechuan food. So good; have to go again! I'm honestly a little puzzled with Astoria. I've was so excited to try this place after hearing so much about it and not being able to get a reservation for a while. But I think I set my expectations too high. We were informed that the spice rating for each dish is as the bottom of each box on the menu. Look for the cat and how many fireballs it's breathing. The prices on the menu kind of cover this up on most of the boxes so that's definitely a design flaw. We ordered several dishes that were supposed to be spicy and found that none of them really were very spicy. The food is definitely spiced, but not spicy. There's a lot of seasoning that it kind overwhelms the food and makes it salty. Both of my friends tried the Dan Dan noodles and then gave them rest to me as they said it was too salty. For the chili oil wontons, I genuinely could not taste the pork inside. I could only taste the chili oil. The pea shoots were my least favorite as it's $20 for pea shoots with just garlic. The cumin lamb is decent as someone who generally doesn't like lamb. However, you should have it with the rice and lots of water because it makes your mouth very dry. The beef noodles were my favorite as the noodles were perfectly cooked and the beef was nice and tender. However the portion size is small and doesn't make much sense for sharing. The hostess and servers were all friendly and the food didn't take too long to come out. The restaurant has a cozy atmosphere and would be nice for a date night or small group dinner. As a gluten free girly, I was so excited to see 2 options for us - one for gluten free with soy and one for gluten free without. Good luck getting a reservation... I see why this place is so loved and highly rated! The beef noodles are probably the best ones I've ever had. It was so soft yet had a bounce and the most delicious flavor! It was spicy and had umami flavor and also perfectly cooked sliced beef. The mapo tofu was also very flavorful and paired perfect with rice! It's not a restaurant with a bar, it's a bar that's sort of a restaurant (and partly why it's hard to get a reservation there--it's basically a narrow bar with about 4 tables (that are only for big parties). Expect to eat and imbibe in high chairs on a countertop, as that's basically Astoria. The second reason it's hard to get a reservation, is that it's probably the best, and most authentic Szechuan/Chinese food in DC. The defect mix of sweetness and tropical flavors took me far away from the grey, snowy DC evening. The food itself was separated into noodle dishes, and small/large/XL plates. I walked in on a Monday night without a reservation and was able to snag a standing spot at the bar while we waited for an open table. We split 4 dishes between 2 ppl and enjoyed our experience. Chili Wontons: 10/10 these were my man's favorite! He still talked about them for days! Gong Bao Chicken: 8/10 good but not great. Late evening meals in DC can be hard to find on a Tuesday night. My friends and I were hungry after a Capitals game, though, and fast food was not ideal. We found Astoria through Yelp, whose kitchen was open until 11:00. The restaurant has a nice outdoor area which was packed when we arrived so we were given a table inside, near the kitchen. That gave us an opportunity to check out the unique decoration of the dining area and bar. Our server pointed us to the menu QR code on the coasters and gave some recommendations. Finally tried Astoria for my bestie's birthday dinner, and overall it was a solid experience with a few highs and lows. The restaurant has limited seating, but they offer both indoor and outdoor options (yes, they do keep the outdoor area warm even in the winter with heaters, which was a nice touch). There were four of us, so we ordered a good variety: Baby Bok Choy, Chili Wontons, Scallion Lamb, La-Zi Chicken, Walnut Shrimp, Beef Noodles, and Green Pepper Fish. I'll be honest a lot of the dishes leaned spicier than I prefer (my spice tolerance is low), and we all agreed several items were a bit on the salty side. The one dish none of us enjoyed was the La-Zi Chicken; the flavor profile just didn't land, and the chili oil completely overpowered everything else. That said, the portions were generous, a few dishes stood out in a good way (wontons, shrimp, beef noodles), and the overall dining environment was cozy. If you love bold, spicy flavors, this might be more up your alley but if you're sensitive to heat like me, just be sure to ask which dishes are milder. read more

I had been wanting to try this place for a while, but it was always hard to make a reservation since they fill up fast (friends tell me that if you go at opening, you can do a walk-in), but my friend scored a recent reservation for six. It was great going with a group as we got to try a lot of different dishes. Some favorites were the water boiled fish, Basil Eggplant and Shrimp, but everything we had was delicious and something we would order again. Be warned that most of the food is at least a little spicy. Everyone in my group was able to eat everything, even those who don't love spicy food. Astoria is a tiny, extremely chic, loungey restaurant in the heart of DuPont Circle specializes in modern Chinese cuisine. The wait staff was as attentive as they could be with the restaurant being so packed for its size. Inside is gorgeous. Dark reds and browns, very trendy. The Painkiller was delicious! But it is also filled to the brim with ice so has VERY little actual drink. Unfortunately, my friend spilled his full drink and there was so little actual liquid that it didn't even go off the table, just sat in the middle and we were able to clean it up with napkins. The waitress was incredibly nice though and gave him a new drink. We tried the gong bao chicken and chili wontons. They were large portions and cooked well. But the sauce was so overpowering I couldn't really taste anything else. I would have liked some other ingredients to cut that chili flavor to make it more robust. It's the chili oil, for sure, because while it's not super hot, you could clearly taste it when you tried to drink water or eat anything else. It just coats your mouth. Service was very lovely. Astoria DC absolutely lived up to the hype -- and then some. This Michelin-starred gem served up some of the best flavors I've had in a while. We ordered the Dan Dan noodles, chili wontons, and shrimp, and every single dish was a knockout. Bold, perfectly balanced, and packed with that signature Sichuan punch. We didn't have reservations, so we ended up waiting about an hour. No complaints though -- we grabbed drinks at the bar next door and came back ready to feast. Totally worth the wait. The espresso martinis were a surprisingly great pairing with all the spice -- smooth, rich, and just the right amount of kick. There is definitely a wait for this place, which based on historical reviews, seems to be par for the course. What I wasn't expecting was the hour it would take for our food to come after we had been seated and ordered. The hostess and waitress were kind but seemed a bit stretched thin, as the hostess was bussing tables between helping new guests. We sat on the outside porch, which, while not unpleasant, did expose us to the mosquitos which seem so prevalent in restaurants in DC. Our beef noodles would probably have been good had they not been stone cold by the time they came to us. But it seems like they had been sitting on some back counter of the kitchen for a long time before they reached us. Very, very salty and a bit spicy - almost too much flavor in each bite. The meat was good, the noodles had a nice chewiness to them. By the time the fish came out, we were ready to leave. I wish someone had recommended that we mix the whole thing together more, because a layer of spicy oil sat on the top and left a lot to be desired when most of the sauce and flavor was actually hidden beneath all the dried chilis and fish at the bottom. Pretty tasty once we'd stirred everything up but our initial reaction was that it was all spicy oil and no other seasoning. I probably wouldn't go back given how long it took to receive our food after the wait for the table and given the quality of the food that eventually arrived. Plenty will write about the food, but I want to start off with mixologist making it happen behind the bar. I did not get her name, but we sat across from her as she was putting on a masterclass of making drinks. Most of all I saw that she was using all fresh ingredients which makes a huge difference to what we ordered. Fresh ingredients go so much further in drinks such as the ones we ordered which included the mojito, painkiller, and even the zombie. The extra effort to actual muddle the mint leaves with sugar and lime to make the mojito is greatly appreciated. It might just be me, but I do enjoy seeing drinks made especially when done by a pro that is present at Astoria. The food is good at Astoria. The menu is not overwhelming but I still found myself having difficulty deciding. When it says small plates or large plates will it be enough for me? Also, if sitting at the high-top tables, space is very limited so remember to space your food selections. This is very true if you have a slow eater. The chili wontons are a great go to when wanting to share something close to an appetizer. The heat was quick and went away quickly if you are afraid of the word chili. The dumplings were packed with pork and were a good-sized portion for sharing. Trust me, it will not have you reaching for water but reaching for another. If you are not adept at using chopsticks do yourself a favor, use the fork provided. Your shirt and the floor will appreciate it. For my main course I went with the cumin lamb which is considered a smaller dish. I am a fan of lamb and much like the wontons it had a little kick that slowly built up but faded away. Two dipping sauces were included if you wanted to pump up the heat. I used it for dipping but decided to pour it over my rice instead. Cannot go wrong either way. Lamb was tender and still had a very teeny, miniscule, small bit of that gaminess I enjoy in some foods. Would I come back? Yes, I would but have your reservations because it is too much of a chance to try a walk in. If it is just, you and one other, you will most likely just get a high top. This is truly the perfect date night spot. It is so cozy inside and has a perfect cocktail list with so many fun choices. As an avid Chinese food fan, the menu had almost too many choices for my husband and I to try. We went here pretty late in the night around 10 PM and originally just went in for drinks but could not resist getting (second) dinner as well. As for food, we got the scallion lamb, dan dan noodles and chili wontons. My husbands favorite were the dan dan noodles, as they had that perfect amount of mouth numbing Sichuan peppers in it. The flavors are just perfect. My personal favorite was the chili wontons which were the perfect soft texture and also had a ton of heat. Came here to celebrate our anniversary this weekend! You have to make reservations two weeks in advance so pick a date and mark your calendar!! We were sat upon arrival on the patio - the heaters WORK so don't worry if that's your table. We ate GOOD! To start we had the garlic pea shoots and gong bao chicken - the gong bao chicken was perfectly spicy and the garlic pea shoots were a nice touch of greens. Astoria DC is the place for deliciously spicy Sichuan. I made a reservation weeks in advance to celebrate my husband's birthday. The only open seating around dinnertime was their outdoor, open air patio. Although slightly inconvenient they did have space heaters mounted above the covered patio resulting in a bearable dining experience for late March. The food was amazing and bursting with spicy flavor. The drinks are phenomenal and made very well. So well, birthday boy ordered their mojito twice! Luckily we were able to get a reservation. We ordered a bunch of items and share them all which is probably the best way to go. The dishes that stood out were the beef noodles, walnut shrimp, and chili wonton. If you tell them your preferred flavors, they can curate the perfect Mock-tail or cocktail for you. April 26, 2026 I came alone for dinner. The host said no tables were available and told me to wait at the bar. About half the tables were empty, but I assumed they were reserved. I waited near the bar for 15 minutes - no one acknowledged me or gave me an update. So I left. Right outside, I ran into a white friend who was also coming for dinner alone. We decided to eat together. I told him the wait was long, but he said he'd go ask. I stayed a few steps away from the restaurant . He walked in alone, asked the host, and got us a table immediately, seated us in 5 mins and placed the order in 10 mins. Everything went just fantastic. I don't know if this was intentional, but the difference in treatment was impossible to miss. I hope management looks into how their staff treats customers. I will not be returning. read more

I came here with my sister and cousin for a late dinner. We ran late for our reservation but kept them in the loop as to when we'd be arriving, which didn't seem to be an issue. Upon arrival, we were informed that we were there on a less busier night and next time, they wouldn't be able to hold our table. It felt like we were being scolded and reprimanded. We awkwardly laughed it off, apologized and got seated. The esthetic inside is that of a dark train station. It was pretty cool and different from anywhere I've been. For food we ordered the following: Pea shoots 9/10 Chili wontons- 10/10 Salt 'n pepper eggplant- 10/10 Salt 'n pepper shrimp- 10/10. I believe there was a different chef during our 2nd visit because the salt and pepper eggplant and the salt shrimp both had an excessive amount of whole cloves in them. It overpowered the dishes in the most egregious way and almost made them inedible. Those previous 10s quickly turned to 4s. Throughout the night, our waiter made snarky, rude and condescending comments to us when we would ask simple questions about the menu. The restaurant is located near Dupont Circle. Parking wasn't impossible but quite difficult. Found a spot 2 blocks away in 15 mins. Astoria is more of a bar style restaurant: Dark, small, crowded and energetic. We reserved bar seating since regular tables are almost impossible to book. We knew the bar seats would be tight and not very comfortable, but still wanted to try this place due to its popularity. We ordered the Beef Noodles as our starter. Love the wide flat belt noodles (The texture is great), beef was tender and tasty, but the overall dish was very salty and strong favors. We also ordered the Walnut Shrimp, creamy honey sauce covered the fried shrimp, it is decent but nothing particularly impressive. For veggies, we ordered the Watercress, highlight of the night, the sauce/seasoning reminded me of home, simple but flavorful, highly recommended. Lastly, the Water Boiled Fish. It was supposed to be the highlight of the night, but I am kinda disappointed, it looked like the Sichuan-style water boiled fish, but the flavor wasn't the same. It only keep the spiciness but lacked of the numbing peppercorn flavor and richness. Overall, the restaurant is on the expensive side (Considering the small portion sizes). They will ignore patrons in line for 30min+ instead of communicating timeline or wait or taking down names. It's all very off putting to treat your guests like they simply do not exist. It's extra weird that there are tons of open tables during these periods of time. And if you can't seat someone for two hours...just tell them? Don't have them aimlessly stand around thinking, "maybe they'll talk to me if I wait 5min more" In terms of food, we like the chili wontons, the walnut shrimp and the Dan Dan. I've been wanting to come here for months and its a hard reservation to snag because it is a smaller spot - the inside is very intimate and they do have a decent size outdoor patio. We came in for our 7pm reservation and didn't actually get our table until close to 7:20ish which was a disappointment but the host did bring us waters and do her best in finding us somewhere to sit while we waited. When we did get sat we had a nice seat right near the bar. Our drinks were always the quickest thing to arrive- we got the bourbon smash, the old fashion, the frozen pina colada, and the caipirinha - all the drinks were fantastic and really paired well with the Szechuan food. For the food we got: dan dan noodles, beef noodles, veggie platter, scallion lamb, and the chili wontons, which yes was a ton of food but we brought home about 1/3 in leftovers. The chili wontons did have a great level of heat but could have used a bit more filling. The beef noodles were fantastic, probably the star of the show and the beef was really well done. The dan dan noodles were ok - good spice level but a bit boring in flavor, and the veggie platter was great, tons of veggies and all really well cooked. The lamb was nice as well, not too gamey. Service: server was great, no complaints on him and drinks came out quick. They did forgot our rice at the beginning and then our vegetable platter took probably 30+ minutes to come out when the wontons and beef noodles came out immediately. 3.5 stars. I was REALLY excited to try Astoria. I put my phone away so I could be fully mentally present for this meal. I love Chinese food and many friends talked this place up. Service: 4/5 nice folks, very cute interior, upsized one of our dishes for free for our anniversary Drinks: 4/5 The Moscow mule just tasted like ginger. I didn't mind it at first but it was overpowering to the point that I couldn't finish it. My partner got the bramble which we both loved. Food: sorely disappointed. I don't eat pork but my partner said the Dan Dan noodles tasted like they were made with spaghetti. We got the water boiled beef at the recommendation of our waitress, and it honestly lacked flavor - it tasted like it was seasoned with chili oil alone. I had high hopes for that dish and the meat quality was good but it fell flat. The pea shoots were good but bordered on being too salty. The gong bao chicken was great but had more chili/peanuts than pieces of chicken. I would come back to try other dishes simply because of how much people seem to love this restaurant, but this was an almost comedically disappointing meal!
