It was honestly obscene how good this was. Lamb's texture was would go back for this alone. Spanakopita Toast - would also go back for this alone. And to also try their Pork Rilletes toast as well this was house sourdough focaccia with garlic skordalia, creamy spinach, manouri cheese, dill, and crispy sesame phyllo. 100/10. classic cheese za 'Nduja + Peppers za, topped with tomato, mozzarella, onions, peppers, and 'nduja sausage. Both were delicious, but I gave Deke a lot of crap for getting the classic pie instead of... any of the other options they had don't get me wrong, it was yum, but I wanted the mushroom, spinach and halloumi as our second pie, lol. The pizza is certainly worth the hype. I'd been hearing about this place for a while and finally got to try it on a toasty, Friday night. We put our names down around 6:45pm and the wait was about an hour and a half. My friends and I popped over to Purple Patch to grab drinks beforehand (delicious, highly recommend!) and then came back to Martha Dear to wait out the remaining time until our table was ready. The hostess takes your number and gives you a call when the table is ready. Unsure what the grace period is since we were right outside the restaurant when we got the call. The patio area doesn't give that many vibes (especially compared to the cozy hole-in-the-wall feel of the inside) but it did the job! We got the whipped feta & eggplant dip. I felt pretty ambivalent about it, but it was nice to have something to snack on while waiting for the pizza. While the accompanying crispy chips were good, I feel like the dip would have benefited from a softer dipping vehicle. The main event: I got the classic pizza and added pepperoni and mushrooms as toppings! This might be one of the best decisions I made all week. The pizza was delightful and also wayyy bigger than I expected. My leftovers lasted me for two more (smallish) meals. I traded a slice with my friend who got the spinach and halloumi pizza and that was incredible as well. I don't think I would need an entire pizza of it, but boy was that one slice delicious. Perk of the patio is that you can watch the Mount Desert ice cream line get longer and longer as time passes and more people decide to end (or start) their night with ice cream. This is the best pizza spot in DC, in my opinion very lowkey, vintage, and true to their ingredients. Maybe that's because I would die for sourdough but it compliments the pizza and dishes so well. We came on a Friday evening, thought it would be packed but they had a couple of tables open and we were seated immediately. Their staff is friendly and recommends only the best. There are no reservations so come prepared to possibly wait. We started with their Dip Duo, which was whipped feta and an eggplant dip. It was served with sourdough pita chips! The dip was topped with an orange jam and olive. This was simple yet so flavorful. I recommend this! We ordered their Spinach and Halloumi pizza and their Classic Cheese pizza. The Halloumi pizza was strong and flavorful, which is what we wanted! This was SO good. We paired it with a classic cheese so we could have a nice baseline! Overall both we amazing. I highly recommend this place, again I don't say this lightly but the sourdough pizza was everything I wanted, hence my favorite pizza in DC. We will be back! read more

Couldn't have asked for a better experience! Martha dear might be the best pizza I've had in dc ! The Neapolitan style pizza hits so hard. 5/5- The squash and halloumi white pizza was perfectly balanced. 5/5 - classic with a twist. The classic pie is great own its own, but when you add pickled jalapeños and their homemade meatballs, it becomes an insanely delicious bite! As for small plates this place doesn't disappoint. The whipped feta with strips of gold on top (candied ouzo orange peel), and hot honey is addicting. Especially with the home made warm pita. The charred cabbage was another hit. With a hummus base, fresh herbs, peppers, and sesame topping I could not forget. Lastly, the gigantes (giant beans) I'm not typically a fan of these but every bite was nice. The fresh parsley on top gave it a simple yet fresh finish, making it taste like home. As for dessert, we tried the olive oil cake. It has just a subtle enough aroma and finish of the Greek olive oil without being over powering. And the salted chocolate on top was a delight. Finally, for drink well all I can say is our server Helen was on point. She knew everything about every wine, beer, and cocktail, and even helped me find a new love for orange wines! When 'life happened' and we needed to make a change, it was impossible to do so in the Resy app. I tried calling the restaurant for 30 minutes but no one picked up (and there is no voicemail; the phone just rings endlessly). When I finally got through on the phone, I spoke to the restaurant owner at length, who was deeply patronizing and gleeful to get to use her cancellation policy to make $60 off of our family. With an owner who is this rude and tone deaf, I have serious concerns about the quality of the service at Martha Dear. And if the restaurant has to rely on nickel-and-diming its customers in this way to get by, then this is probably the type of place with a ton of mystery "service fees". Save your sanity and choose a different option in Mt. Pleasant! read more

I will say it's not my favorite pie in DC (that still goes to Timber Pizza), but it's definitely up there. It's not the toppings that'll drawn you in, it's really the simplicity of the sauce and the bread. Honestly the crust alone is worth coming back for, it's better than order of bread I've gotten around town, super fluffy and just a little bit of burnt crispness. Such a gem. Mount Pleasant has needed a world class spot, and now it has one. Pair it with a movie at Suns, right across the street, and you've got one of DC's most unique nights out. We came on a Saturday around 6, and there was no wait. They don't take reservations, and around 7, people walking in had to wait. Keep that in mind. They have amazing dim lighting with exposed brick walls, which just feels like the decor a true pizza place needs. The food was top notch as well. They serve sourdough pizzas cooked in a giant wood fire oven. It takes about 30 minutes for the pizza to arrive, but it's worth the wait. It's deliciously fresh, thin and foldable crust but fluffy in back. Delicious stuff. We kept it simple with the classic cheese plus pepperoni, and we were in pizza heaven. To put a cherry on top, they offer some good local beers. Our fave was Other Half Brewing's appropriately named jumbo slice imperial ipa. Such a nice time here, we can't wait to come back. Went to Dear Martha Wednesday evening. I am from out of state and my daughter was excited to take me here as she had been several times and loved the pizza. The atmosphere is great- loved my view of the pizza oven. We wanted to splurge on a bottle of wine so I asked our server if it was possible to taste her two recommendations before deciding on a bottle. She said yes and poured us each two sips from two bottles. We enjoyed one much more than the other so told her that was the bottle we wanted. She then poured us each a glass and walked away with the bottle. Hmmm...we thought. Was she going to chill our red wine and bring it back in a bucket? My daughter went after her as she disappeared with the bottle and reminded her we had ordered a bottle. So, not long after another woman came out and explained that there had been a misunderstanding and that they had poured us glasses from a bottle that was already opened. Their mistake, however they now could not give us a bottle but would make sure we received 5 glasses. Really? I explained that we ordered a bottle so we could have it at our table and decide how to share it. Nope- not possible. We could either pay for the two glasses and then an additional bottle or let them decide when to give us refills and determine we had gotten our full bottle's worth of pours. I told the woman I thought this was confusing, but could tell she wasn't going to budge so thanked her for explaining her "reasoning" to me. So we enjoyed a pizza and great green salad. Occasionally she would stop by and refill our ( small) glass. So we did receive 5 small glasses ‍ I thought the whole thing was a bit weird. The pizza was delicious. They did include a 20% tip in our total which I think I would have left anyway as our server was nice and I think she felt badly about her mistake. read more

Good food, small pricey portions, and a big management attitude issue. I wanted to give this place a good second chance - but on two occasions the manager I interacted with was not kind. This place is fine for a good bite of overpriced artisan pizza - but not for a dining experience. There is no hospitality here or effort to make diners feel valued, and for the pricing it's just not worth it. To be fair, the pizza was yummy with a good crust and toppings. But the positives stop there. The whipped feta was a tiny portion for its price ($16). The wine glasses are cheap and small. Our server was nice and attentive and also accidentally spilled red wine on me - no biggie - accidents happen, but at the end of the day this is a genuine mistake as a server and the restaurant has a responsibility to acknowledge this kind of mistake. The server apologized and I reassured them it was an accident and I understood that. Because of my reaction nothing was done and the mistake was never addressed again, nothing was comped not even one $12 glass of wine, no appetizer or dessert was sent out to try to improve the dining experience. You shouldn't have to be angry over a mistake for that mistake to be addressed. At the end of the day spilling wine on a customer is a mistake that needs to be amended regardless of the diner's reaction. A manager came out a little later while we still had wine in our glasses and asked "are you finishing up?" Never in my life have I been asked if I was finishing up while there was still food on the table and wine in the glass. I followed up with management the next day - trying to give them another chance to show good service and care for their customers. I was told that I should have complained more in person and that next time if something goes wrong to say something then. The manager went on to blame the server which was absolutely unnecessary when this is clearly a hospitality culture and management issue. With so many other good pizza places with better prices in DC and Mount Pleasant, I will not be going back. This is a spot where your presence as a guest is seen as just as another check. read more

Usually, when an American restaurant stakes a claim to some kind of Italian style it doesn't actually translate to the food. But when Martha Dear says they're doing Neopolitan pizzas, they mean it! These pies took me straight back to Napoli - the size and shape, the deep flavor profile of the sauce, simple ingredients bursting with flavor. No canned mushrooms or tasteless peppers here! Each ingredient sang its own tune, but all came together in perfect harmony on the pie. Got to try their Kalamata olives as well (I'll forgive a Greek olive since they were so good) and the lemony brine was so bright and flavorful, yum! It's always wonderful to welcome a new restaurant to the neighborhood, but especially right now when so many old standards are closing their doors. We found this place to be just fine. They're taking reservations - which is great! - so we decided to finally make the trip up there. The vibes and service are good. We had a table near their window and felt like we were comfy and cozy rather than tight and cramped. So that's great! And the service was solid - never wanting or bothered. They include a 20% service fee, but the server mentioned it - which should be the new standard. My partner said the wine selection was a little small. She also wished the dip duo was included in the menu a la carte. So she went with the lamb hummus, which earned good remarks. I ordered the marinara pizza - which was mediocre. Crust was a bit overly crispy/crunchy and a bit dull in flavor, but the tomato sauce was pretty excellent & zippy so it balanced out. We stopped in late on a Thursday, and slipped into a comfortable seat with a couple drinks- a tequila punch number for her, and a delicious Kalamata olive martini for me. To start, we shared the dip duo, which featured beautifully served whipped feta and mashed peas, topped with herbs, nuts, and fruits and served with the crispiest pita chips in America. Next, we tried the house salad, which was a bit salty for my taste, before we settled on our entrees. She had the white pie, served on a nice rustic crust with a side of their delicious dill dipping sauce, akin to a tzatziki. I went for the non-pizza route and tried their gigantes and pepperonata dish, featuring tender white beans on a bed of white sauce topped with peppers and breadcrumbs. Served chilled, it was a delicious and creamy alternative. In addition to the food, the service was friendly and relaxed, making for an enjoyable evening. I can't picture me ever getting pizza from this place on my own, but if a friend were to say they picked up some pizzas from here and asked if i would like some, I would say, "wow, so rich! trust fund! ...sorry, but yes please, I will have some." this is pizza for the rich. Mt Pleasant has long resisted gentrification, but opening a pizza place with pizza the locals can't afford, to me, is a blatant (maybe even violent) display of gentrification and classism. You come into this place and charge $20 bucks for a kids pie? I say shame on ya, but that's just me. With all that said, the pizza was pretty great, and the woman we picked up from wore an apron and was very kind. I loved the sourdough crust, but thought it was really expensive for what you actually get. We also ordered the panzanella which was tasty (particularly the sourdough croutons!) but I think had too many onions and so the ratio was off. I love sourdough and good pizza, but I hate cheese. Martha Dear makes awesome cheese fee pizza, one of their options is to build on a cheese free base. Pizza is classic, little burnt crust.
