We stayed at the Halber Mond for 3 nights (it's part hotel, restaurant, brewery) and highly recommend. Our room was a family suite, which required 67 steps to top floor (no elevator to this room) but the climb was worth it -- we had beautiful views of the village and Starkenburg castle, one of the medieval castles along the Bergstrasse. Rooms were clean, large, well-maintained and comfortable. Breakfast was typical for Germany, a generous selections of eggs, juices, cereals, fruits, meats, etc. Didn't eat in the restaurant but did spend one evening in their biergarten, enjoying bratwurst, wienerschnitzel, and their excellent beer.

Schnitzel, while not from the freezer as one German reviewer claims, was OK but nothing spectacular. That being said it came in one Euro higher on the final bill than as advertised on the menu. Things like that really, really bug me. Service was, as some German reviewers mentioned, not particularly friedly or fast. We also complained that there was something off with the wine and cheese in the fondue. At the end of the meal, those who did not get a meal asked to speak to the owner because they felt they should not pay 24,90 euro for a meal they did not receive only to be threatened by the owner that he would call the polizei if they did not pay. After a long back and forth conversation, he explained to us that he did not need our business.
