I'm so glad we came to Martin for our appraisal. We had a diamond ring given to us by my partner's parents that we needed appraised before getting the diamond reset. We were a little worried about the appraisal process during COVID, but Martin was so careful -- he has a plexiglass panel set up between him and customers, he checked our temperatures at the door, and he wore two masks. I really appreciate the care he takes to make folks feel safe. Now to the actual appraisal: he was very straight-forward about describing the diamond's quality and even gave us a little relevant historical context to better help us understand our diamond. The whole process took about an hour and he was transparent about the cost over the phone before we drove over, which was nice. We wanted to get a gold bracelet appraised and we saw the other great reviews so we decided on Martin Fuller Appraisals. Appraisals are by appointment so we called Martin and he was very accommodating to take us within our timeframe that day. We arrived and he was extremely cordial and friendly. He walked us through the entire appraisal process and is extremely knowledgeable. He even cleaned my necklace for me! The process really gives you a good idea of how jewelry is appraised and if you do plan on selling the jewelry it gives you a lot of knowledge about the jewelry's worth. This prevents low ball offers in the future. I would go here in the future to get other jewelry appraised and I highly recommend Martin. We actually intended to go elsewhere but was told the cost of a same-day appraisal of one piece of jewelry would be $450, so we went to Martin Fuller's instead. They were extremely accommodating and squeezed us into the schedule last minute with much more reasonable pricing. Mr. Fuller and his associates are a class act. They are extremely professional and friendly, and Martin has extensive knowledge in the field. I especially recommend his shop for antique pieces where a keen eye with his historical background is much more valuable. He was able to date my piece pretty narrowly and give me background histories of how the era influenced the ring and even the stones. That said, know that the price isn't cheap. I admittedly walked in thinking I was overpaying for my appraisal, but walked out feeling like it was worth it. Like the prior reviewer, Martin noted that the ESL cert on my diamond wasn't the most accurate thing in the world and did his own inspection and appraisal. He charged me $225 for an hour of his time (after the $25 discount for referencing PriceScope.com), vs. the local jeweler who quoted me $125 and I'm sure would have just read the certificate back to me. I trust his appraisal to be accurate as he walked me through the process, not inflated like you might find coming from a jeweler ("oh we have this $25,000 diamond here for $8,000!" - please). Additionally, the jeweler where I got my piece was kind of shady to say the least. But they offered me free sizing, so I shipped it out of state to get it sized after Martin's thumbs up. Upfront: I would recommend using Martin Fuller to do your appraisal - here's why. 1. Martin is a very experienced Master Gemologist Appraiser who is well credentialed and incredibly knowledgeable. 2. He creates and explains your appraisal with you and you get your appraisal the same day you come in. 3. You dont have to live without your piece for a week waiting for someone to get around to appraising it. This was honestly my favorite thing about Martin. My fiance and I went to Martin to have my engagement ring appraised so I could insure it with USAA (note: if you're insuring with USAA Martin has worked with them numerous times and creates an appraisal that is to their standards). Martin's personality is so fun! He and his staff made us feel like friends. He appraised our ring with us right there explaining every bit about it! He was able to date the piece all together as being from the early 1900s (which we knew) but then he told us that some of the diamonds in the ring were as old as the 17 or 1800s which we had no idea about! The experience was so educational and so worth doing. When we left we called my fiance's parents to tell them everything we had learned about this family ring. They were fascinated about all the little details we recieved and we all felt like we knew a little bit more about my fiance's great grandmother, the original owner. I am so glad I went to Martin! I had a diamond in a necklace and a loose stone. Martin was able to remove the diamond from the necklace and appraise both stones. Martin also cleaned the stones during the appraisal and they are so sparkly I haven't been able to stop looking at them! I initially thought I would need to have a stone recut, but after the cleaning it's perfect the way it is. Martin responded to my request for an appraisal quickly, fit me in the next day, and followed several COVID safety protocols (double masking, plexiglass, extended table length so we were far apart when seated, temperature checks, and waiting outside the office during the bulk of the appraisal) so I felt very safe. I recently purchased a diamond ring for my wife for our 20th anniversary. Although an appraisal was already provided by courtesy of the seller, my wife and I wanted to get a 2nd appraisal not only to verify the real value, and also to use it for the new insurance policy (we thought the seller's appraisal might have been inflated too much). I did an extensive research looking for reputable and reliable appraisers in the DC / VA / MD area, and I quickly learned that Mr. Fuller had the highest rated reviews, and his credentials were phenomenal as well. Below are a few of the experiences my wife and I had with this establishment today. 1. Making an appointment was easy on the phone, but my initial attempt to make an appointment through their website didn't work - so I'd recommend to call them if you need a new appointment. 2. The appraisal process was very enjoyable and educational. Mr. Fuller shared his appraisal process step by step with us, and also answered all our questions in a very helpful way. 3. It was truly interesting to see with our own eyes how his assessment perfectly matches the GIA report. He explained that GIA has a laser based measurement system whereas he uses a mechanical one. But guess what. His mechanical tools showed the exact numbers that were on the GIA report to the 1/100th millimeters (Or should I say 10 micrometers) 4. The appraisal report had a lot of details, and was not even comparable in its quality to the original appraisal paper we had been given by the jeweler. Let alone the fact that it was beautifully bound and also a soft-copy was shared when requested. My fiance took our engagement ring to Martin for an insurance appraisal, after hearing buzz from pricescope. They had literally just moved to another suite down the hall, but were gracious enough to fit in an appointment for us. Martin has a great demeanor, very friendly and professional at the same time. He has been doing this a long time, enjoys it, and it shows. Martin walked my fiance through the entire process of the appraisal, explaining each step as he went along, showing the GIA inscription under the microscope, his measurements, flourescence, how he calculated the market value, and so on. He has consulted for the Smithsonian on the Hope diamond, as well as many other multi-million dollar gems of royal/celebrity status, and yet still had the utmost professionalism and appreciation for our diamond. Mr. Fuller and his staff are consummate professionals. I purchased an item at auction which was advertised as an 1890s, gold Faberge Demantoid Garnet ring, surrounded by diamonds. To insure my $8500 purchase, I wanted a professional appraisal and I saw Mr. Fuller's glowing reviews on Yelp and other websites. Luckily, I was able to get an appointment quickly. After examining my 'gem' for one hour, taking measurements on how much light the 'garnet' reflected, not only did Mr. Fuller determine that the ring was NOT a Faberge item but it also wasn't even a Demantoid garnet, as had been advertised in the auction catalog. His examination, substantiated with multiple photos and a very thorough appraisal (using his microscope, you could tell that even the diamonds were glued into the ring!), was key to my getting a full refund from the auction house.
