I visited Achikian Goldsmiths this past Friday to inquire about resizing a half eternity ring I had purchased while abroad. I was greeted by a woman who examined my ring and told me it would be impossible to resize because the diamonds in the ring would be loosened and fall off. She then chastised me for not buying a custom fitted ring. She told me the only way that I could get it to fit would be to add a horseshoe-shaped piece of gold to the inner part of the ring, and she quoted me $125 for the cost of the (14 karat!) gold and labor to put it in, and said the order would take at least a week. I was skeptical that a half eternity band could not be resized, and I also thought the price she was quoting for the gold was unreasonable. I decided to get a second opinion and when I told the saleswoman so, she packed up my things, sarcastically said "good luck", and walked away. I took the ring to another jeweler recommended by a friend, who told me that the band could definitely be resized, and he has resized hundreds of similar bands before. He charged me $35 dollars and gave me a timeline of only 4 days. I am writing this review only because I found the service at Achikian to be unhelpful and I would have liked to have seen a review like this while deciding where to take my ring. I am glad I trusted my gut and walked away. read more

We got the opportunity to see the Achikians' handiwork twice over the holiday season, with an unusual custom order for a ring (pictured) as well as cleaning and restringing on an ancient family set of pearls. We could not have been more pleased with how each came out. The ring especially was a unique ask and we are thrilled with the result. We've done custom work at other jewelry stores before but this was the first time we got to work directly with the jeweler who would make our piece. Love it. We were also impressed by their honesty. We paid an appraisal fee for a different family ring and when the results came back, to indicate that the ring was 14k gold and not platinum (as we initially thought), they credited part of the appraisal fee back to us. My finger changes sizes based on season, salt intake, etc. If I buy a ring on a day that my finger is swollen, then it looks floppy on days that my finger is not swollen. If I have it resized to fit those days, then there are days that the ring is too tight to wear. I looked into the little sizing balls that they put inside rings. They are fine until you put pressure on the balls. Then they hurt your finger. A friend had a horseshoe shaped spring insert in her ring. It seemed like a better solution. Recently I bought a new ring/setting for my diamond at an upscale arts & crafts show. I wanted to have the horseshoe shaped sizer put in it & contacted multiple jewelers. Two never heard of it. Achikian Goldsmiths knew exactly what I wanted. Ken suggested that I try the sizer for a week before resetting the diamond to insure that it was what I wanted. It is exactly what I wanted. A week later, I brought the ring back to set my diamond into the ring. They did a great job and rushed the order to accommodate me having to leave town a few days later. I had purchased these rings online knowing they would need to be resized, the first shop I called close to home quoted me a price over the phone much higher than Achikian for sizing and appraisal, I decided to shop around as I thought the price was excessive. I then went to another shop close by my office they examined the rings and told me they could not be resized due to the placement of the diamonds. This store is a little gem. My fiance found this place by searching on Yelp and we're so glad we did. He picked out the most beautiful custom engagement ring and the customer service was just terrific. Everyone was super helpful and patient with him. They make sure to not rush you and have really great suggestions. I am sensitive to nickel and other alloys that can be found in platinum so we eventually went with palladium and they walked us through everything - explained the different metals and how to clean/take care of them, etc. We went back to pick out our wedding bands and were reminded of how fortunate we are to have them as our local jeweler. We discovered Achikian when we were looking for a wedding band option that would go with my sister's oddly shaped vintage engagement ring. She had explored a number of shops, and most were out of her price range or generally sold jewelry off the shelf rather than tailoring it. We felt that Kent was very helpful and informative. He seemed straightforward and honest. He gave my sister some options and ultimately designed her a ring with engravings to match her engagement ring--and at a reasonable price. Everything went smoothly--it fit great, it was completed on time, the shop was accommodating in arranging delivery options (my sister lives out of town). We were all very pleased. Next, my mom (who didn't know of a jeweler she could trust in her city) asked Achikian about options for resizing some of her rings. Her discussions with them gave her a clear understanding of her options and gave her some extra information to consider. She had them resize and fix up one of her rings as a test case. She was so pleased that when she next came back to town, she asked Achikian to resize 10 more rings. They all turned out VERY well. I found Achikian Goldsmiths through reviews on Yelp and several other sites and had an excellent experience with them. I always prefer supporting smaller, family-run businesses over big box stores. I visited Achikian to rework a pair of gold earrings which would not fit through my pierced ears, to replace a small gemstone in an old bracelet, and to sell some pieces of jewelry that were no longer to my liking or broken and not worth fixing. They did excellent work on the earrings, redesigning the wire and its clasp, and on replacing the gemstone in the bracelet. They clearly explained the policy and procedures on selling the jewelry and offered either a cash (check) option or a higher amount to be applied to a purchase in store. I was very much tempted by the beautiful jewelry they carry but decided to go with the check as the last thing I need is more jewelry.....but if I change my mind or need a jeweler for any other reason, Achikian Goldsmiths will be my first choice! read more
