I was happy to find such a well-stocked local hardware store upon moving to Charlottesville. I have visited multiple times, always with a clear goal/item in mind. The store clerk has always been able to point me exactly to where I can find my desired item. Employees have generally been friendly and helpful when prompted with questions about a project etc. The store has a whole downstairs so it's bigger than it looks from outside. Parking is limited, but there is a designated lot and I've never had an issue grabbing a spot. Always feel good to support the local places, especially institutions like Martin's which has been around for over 100 years I think?! read more

I visit Martin's many times a month, and all the employees are always ready and willing to help me find what I need. The checkout clerk Rosemary is always so warm and welcoming and ready to help. Decent selection, love being able to go here instead of giving a big box store my money. However, during a visit on 7/6/21, an associate got off of the phone with a customer who had called looking for some help/advice and he turned to the cashier-in full view and earshot of myself and other customers-and proceeded to curse and trash talk the caller. Classy. I called him out in front of the cashier but he stalked off. Tall guy with a rat tail mullet. I'm sure "in these trying times" that kind of customer relations should be frowned upon. read more

Went in this morning looking for help with a small fix up project and the employee was super helpful even though the two pieces of hardware I needed only cost .48 cents each. I bought some other things just because I felt I "owed" it to them. With the big box stores' domination of markets these days, we are so fortunate to have a store like this in Charlottesville. Great customer service! I came in search of a few missing parts for a project I was working on. Being that I'm self taught w/ certain tools for DIY projects, I definitely needed some insight on what items to use and where to find them in the store. Upon arrival, I could tell that searching on my own would take a lot of time being that the selection was quite extensive. Rather than aimlessly wander back and forth, I asked a sales associate for someone to assist me. Since I learn by doing, I brought the small tools with me to show the associate first hand. While it was a little awkward lugging in my tools, the sales associates were very chill about it and worked with me to answer my questions. In the end, it helped the associate find the right parts a lot easier as he was able to quickly try a few different sizes to find the parts. I also asked if I could open a few of the packages (that I was already planning to purchase) to make sure they fit correctly on the ends/attachments - and they were completely fine with that. This was really fantastic since I don't live nearby, and the thought of driving back to return small parts was very daunting! I really appreciated the time the associate took to talk me through how to set things up, as well as what additional items may help. There was zero pressure to purchase anything beyond what I had come for, and I did not feel rushed at all. I ended up picking up all the suggested bits and the prices were very competitive (if not better!) than other retailers I had looked at (including online). All in all, I thought the service today was top notch and I would recommend Martin Hardware for those looking to support local places with great customer service. read more

This might be my favorite store in Charlottesville. Fully stocked with all the best brands and materials, they really do have everything you need for home projects and more. The people are always friendly, knowledgeable, and reliable. Front desk always points you in the right direction and employees on the floor are quick to ask if you need help. I had to get a simple apartment key copied when I went in for my last visit and I was out of there in 3 minutes. GREAT customer service and efficiency! Thank you Martin Hardware! read more

I've shopped at Martin for years, and appreciate that you can always find someone knowledgeable to assist you. This week Brian helped me replace a transponder key for my car, including recommending a place to get the bizarrely tightened screw in the new housing open. I appreciate their patience! My only caveats are that this is not a hardware "superstore," so if you're looking for eight different kinds of potting soil and custom miniblinds, this is not the place. Also, women, be prepared to get called 'darlin' a lot. But, for quick trips or things that require knowledge and customer service? These guys are great. read more

Martin's Hardware- where the customer comes other than First. I asked for Brian at the register and was told he was in the back office. I went to the back office where three employees were talking and asked for Brian. After a female pointed him out - he was standing right in front of her - Brian never even acknowledged my presence. After I waited over 5 minutes while they continued to talk and ignore me they retreated to a secluded office still ignoring me. I left unserved and barely acknowledged. I expected BETTER. read more

We went in to have reel mower blades sharpened, had the mower with us and were told it would be $20. Went to pick up and charged $80 (different person). They would not back down and refused to believe or care that someone else said it would be $20. Surprised to see that from a local store. read more

This is my favorite hardware store in Virginia. It's locally owned so you will see the same faces each time you go in. The owners are extremely helpful and friendly. It may not have absolutely everything you might be looking for, but they sure do have a lot of stuff. And if you're not sure if they will have it, you can easily call ahead and ask so you don't waste a trip. One of the things that is not apparent when you walk around the store is that there are steps to the basement where they have a great selection of Weber grills...a nice place to find if your feeling claustrophobic and want to look at well-made Weber grills that will last more then one season. Check this place out, because it feels better giving your dollar to another person just like you instead of a corporation that sends your money out of town. read more
