Blake hands down is the best trainer ever. We had so much fun shooting shotguns. He was so patient and once we were comfortable shooting he made shooting the clay desk into a game. I was Chilling at the pad recharging my Ankle Bracelet . When I received a call from my friend Casey he invited me out to Shoot Trap at the Martinez Gun Club . Of course I accepted . So I jumped into my Whip and rolled out to Martinez Gun Club . Its in a Low Key location out by the Oil Refinery's . They have a Nice Facility with Multiple Trap Ranges and a really Big Clubhouse with a Bar , Pro shop and LCD TVs . The Trap Ranges are voice activated so when you talk it will launch a Clay Pigeon . I met my friends Casey & Amy in the Clubhouse where we purchased Tokens for 3 Rounds of 25 Clay Pigeons per person . Casey & Amy are more advanced shooters so they gave me some useful pointers and let me use one of their Shotguns . If you haven't shot Trap before , You should give it a try . Its definitely a sport of skill and technique , Its also a nice way to socialize. The Staff out there are quite Friendly and have a lot of knowledge to share . I cant wait to go back and shoot more Trap I'm hooked ! LOL. read more

I wanted to do something really memorable for my last "Daddy & Daughter Day." I thought we should try some clay shooting but neither of us had ever been to a shotgun range before so I was a little skeptical about how our day would go. I'm so glad I chose this range because we were immediately greeted at the door by Blake, one of their instructors, who offered us a lesson and loaned us each a gun to shoot with. We both felt so much more confident afterwards and even started hitting our targets. I totally recommend this establishment, it's very family friendly, and will be going back for sure. read more

I had a 3-hour training session with Blake yesterday and found him to be an excellent coach. I am a complete novice with shotguns - this was my first time shooting one ever- and Blake took me from zero experience to having fun shooting trap and skeet in less than 2 hours. Blake is a very thorough teacher, he is very patient and encouraging and this was a great experience. I came in knowing nothing about clay shooting and ended the session with confidence in both my gun and my abilities, as well as with enough understanding of logistics to comfortably go back for some unguided shooting. Review is for the Club and for lessons: I have had two lessons so far with Blake Fahmie ... he is an amazing teacher! Patient, encouraging, friendly and great sense of humor ... he has a perfectly terrific style of coaching new shooters. Check out his YouTube videos if you want to be totally impressed at his incredible shooting skills! Blake provides a large selection of shotguns in all types for the lessons (or you can bring your own). He provides 20 gauge & 12 gauge ... pump-action, semi-auto, and break-action ... compact/youth sizes and full sizes. It was very enlightening being able to try all kinds of guns to see what works best for me (5'4" woman). Blake even helped me get connected with the on-site gunsmith to shorten the stock of my vintage Zoli so I can use it while I decide if I want to invest in a new gun. The Club itself is fantastic ... it's like a scenic park with a lot of shade and great equipment, plus a clubhouse and bar, with plenty of outdoor seating too. Everyone who works there and the members all seem to be very helpful and friendly to new shooters. Lots of families and women shooters ... not just a "guys club". The Club has a fun "night shoot" on Wednesdays with dinner too. It's nice that you can take advantage of the range and clubhouse even if you're not a member, but the membership pays for itself in discounts on the range fees. read more

We went to the Martinez Gun Club yesterday to try Trap Shooting and got a lesson from Blake. We had the absolute best time! Blake was a great instructor, his instruction was clear, safe, fun and interesting. There were 5 of us and only one had done it before so he had his work cut out for him. A friend planned a birthday party here. There was something about a request to come early, only for us to sit and wait a bit before we could get started..not sure if that was planning miscommunication or where it stemmed from. One or two grabbed a beer during the wait. But the actual experience was a blast! (pun intended). Blake oriented us and had us choose our rifles. I was very dubious, never having touched a gun before, and now I'm supposed to hit a moving target? But it turned out I hit more than any others in our group! It's an interesting sensation that something done in hand has such an immediate effect on something so far away. Blake set us up with a few different circumstances, some kind of individual, some done more simultaneous with the group. He even threw in a bit of extra ammo for us. Came here for the first time with a few friends for skeet shooting. The facility is a bit of a drive, but well worth it. Upon parking you walk into the range front store that has a large amount of seating, large TVs, and an open bar for drinks. We decided to shoot a couple rounds of skeet and upon paying they give you tokens to put into the machines. There were multiple areas to choose to shoot in on a Saturday afternoon. The facility is large, clean, and very open. Though it doesn't have the best view, it was still a lot of fun watching the clay discs shatter as each person shot. The machine was also good about shooting out the clay discs in random directions which made it much more fun. There were also minimal (2-3) broken clay discs shot out during our 2 hours there. I would definitely come back again to maybe try the trap shooting. read more

Blake was awesome, he first explained about firearm safety, about the shot guns and gauges and preparation before we head out trap shooting. Blake hung around and watched our shots carefully to give us tips for better aim/less recoil pain! I've had experience with guns before (handgun ranges) but haven't had any trap shooting experience. I came here with a group of my friends for trap shooting lessons from Groupon. After visitng this gun club, I can tell you that trap shooting is a blast and great way to spend a sunny afternoon! Blake was a great instructor. He was very encouraging, enthusiastic, and made the overall experience very fun. He also offered tips on how to shoot better which actually helped. I enjoyed his teaching style and I could tell he's had a ton of experience with the sport. He also gave us advice on any gun recommendations, and events happening at the club which was very nice. There's a little cafe/bar (offering food, drinks, and even some alcohol) where you can buy some ammo (a box of 25 12-gauge ammo was $8.50) or just to hang out and relax. The staff was very friendly and made us feel welcomed. On the actual range, there are about 7 to 8 stations with different types of trap shooting (ie Doubles) that can hold about 4 people on the line. There weren't many people on the day we went which was great as we didn't have to wait to use any of the stations. I am definitely considering trap shooting to become a hobby of mine. My first experience with the sport was fun, relaxing, and made me want to get better. If you have any interest in trap shooting or shooting a gun in general, give this place a shot. Is that a mouthful and somewhat confusing? You bet it is, especially to an inexperienced shotgunner like me. But don't let that frighten you - the owners and employees here are super helpful and will answer any questions you might have, and it'll run you $9 for a round of clays ($6 if you're a member). Sure, it's a bit steep for clay pigeon shooting, but you're paying for quality, here. So we've established that you can shoot the style of clay that suits your fancy for the day. I've also glossed over the fact that the owners are really friendly and will answer your questions over a glass of beer (after you shoot, of course). Which, incidentally, brings me to my next point. The Martinez Gun Club has a fully stocked bar and a dining hall for special events. The range is in a constant state of improvement, so odds are you'll find something new with each visit. So go swing by. Bring two boxes of shells and your scattergun - doesn't matter if it's an 870 Express or a fancy-ass break action bird gun - and have yourself a great time at this range, putting clay birds down without the need to eat them afterward. Oh, and mega bonus points for being a family-owned operation, with a focus on spreading their love for sport shooting to more people. They even have a youth program open to the children of club members, but only if the kids can prove that they're maintaining a C-average in school. How cool is that? read more

I shot trap for my first time last weekend at the MGC and had a great time. They were out of ammo so we were lucky we brought our own (went through 300 rounds). It's $8.50 for non-members to shoot 25 clays (trap or skeet). There was almost nobody there so we moved around to have different views. The only negatives: The trap is voice-activated and the recognition was pretty sensitive. If you made other comments it'd fire off another clay. Also, you can only have one round in your gun at a time; you have to re-load between each shot (so if you accidentally fire a second clay by talking to someone else, it's pretty much gone because you're still reloading). You can shoot doubles: you're both sharing the 25 clays. This was a lot of fun too! Had a great time. Surprised there weren't more people on a weekend with beautiful weather. But I'd always call first to see if it's crowded since there were probably only 9 ranges or so! There was a guy out front (Lance Keller) in a mobile trailer. He's a mobile gun fitter and checked out our shotgun for free and offered some advice that improved our shooting. He was really nice, as were his two dogs. :) We had a soda and beer inside while we waited for our friends. The bar looked like it was fully stocked. I saw they also sold snack foods (chips, peanuts, etc). You can smoke on the range but alcohol is not permitted. Can't wait to go back. read more

This review is late but I promised Blake I wanted to be sure to put in a great review because my group's experience was awesome and we had such a great time shooting and learning from Blake! It was my friend's birthday and she wanted to go to a shooting range. I found Blake on GroupOn and he had great reviews on there as well as Yelp. So I contacted him and he got back to be pretty quickly and was an awesome communicator when ever I needed to call him back to ask a question or update him on how many people were coming. He was also very open, flexible and super friendly. We started off with Blake showing us his shotguns and learned about the different types and proper way to handle them. He had each person practice holding the guns properly and assessed which may be best for each person to use. Some of us have never shot a real firearm but felt really comfortable as he talked us through the process and details from how to hold the gun, re-load it, and also how to be safe. I was intimidated by firearms but now I feel confident in handling one! He was flexible with the groupon deal since we had more people and gave us a great deal that included all the equipment. Not only was this a good experience from beginning to end but it was such a smooth and easy experience that he made worth wanting to go back to again! HIGHLY recommend this for a group outing or if you want to learn more about shotguns from a great and championship shotgun teacher!!! read more

I used to shoot here a lot 25 years ago and watched the club deteriorate to the point where we didn't know from day to day if it would survive. I have returned to shooting and was delighted to see how well the club is being run. It has been completely refurbished and is one of the nicest and best managed around. I have taken two shooting lessons from Blake and, having taken lessons from at least 10 top notch instructors over the years, am qualified to state that Blake is a good as they get. Easy to work with and he has the patience to figure out the key element that is negatively impacting your shooting which keeps things simple and effective. I intend to take several more as i develop my game in skeet, trap, and 5 stand. read more

This i place is a gem. Very laid back and welcoming establishment. I've been here several times and the experiences have been great. I come here with friends to skit shoot and have hours of fun. This was the first place I ever shot my shotgun...well, officially. I won a 12 gauge Charles Daly over-under at a sportsman's dinner - I had not owned a gun before that. Everyone here was so nice and accepting of my novis gun owner status. It was a lot of pressure for a first timer! There are so many rules - how to carry your gun, one shot loaded at a time, don't load and wait - you better be ready to shoot - I guess these are unwritten rules *shrugs* guess it makes sense. The only reasons they didn't get 5 stars was because of the idiot kids they have working there. They run around with their pants around their butts, not really doing much. I loved how the old timers that we were sharing a station with kept telling me to leave my shells on the ground so those "yahoo's" actually work. I loved it. I wasn't a huge fan of the dogs running around either - what if it ran infront of me!?!?! ALSO, you can smoke cigars and drink on the range. Such a fun, funny, perfect place. read more
