Canyon sports is an awesome gun store! The staff is very knowledgeable and they have a great selection. They have a great sense of humour too, if you're waiting in line, you will hear some banter and non-pc joking. The shop dog named Target gets a shout out in this review, she's a good girl and always brightens my day! The prices seem comparable to every other gun store and the quick service definitely beats the big box stores. If you want to be talked down to, disrespected, and have a horrible customer service experience then this is your place! The first person that helped us was condescending in the sense that he continuously used terminology that we had no idea of. I think he was trying to assert his intelligence which was clearly lacking. The next person that help us was a pleasant older gentleman who was kind, polite, and nice to hold a conversation with. I would return just for him if I had no other option. The great thing is that we did have another option and the manager could care less with the attitude she was serving. You could smell her stank from a mile away just by looking at her rude face. The second she opened her mouth we knew we would not be doing business with Canyon Sports because the face of their business, their manager is a disheveled atrocity. Being that their selection is so poor you would think they would be more welcoming to their clientele. Let's move on to the value of what they're selling. We were in the market for a specific item which they were selling for $1200ish after taxes and fees. We called around and found a different business selling the same exact item for $749 after taxes and fees. The second business was flabbergasted that Canyon Sports was price gouging their customers likely due to a lack of inventory. Highly do not recommend this business. I live quite a distance from Canyon Sports. However, they are reputed to have a large selection of guns so I thought I would make the drive to see what they might have in stock. On my first visit, I met Zack and a young lady, both working behind the counter. The young lady was quiet and efficient. She was very helpful in filling out all the necessary forms required to purchase a handgun. Zack is a big man with a watchful eye. Nothing gets past him. As far as I am concerned this is what makes a gun shop a safe place for customers. Zak knows what he is talking about when it comes to guns. If you came looking for a warm welcome, a friendly discussion about politics, or "hold your hand" customer service then maybe you should look elsewhere. If you came to buy a gun from a place with a very good selection, in a safe environment, from professionals who know their business far better than any I know, then this is the place for you. Zac and his coworker helped me purchase the right gun for the right purpose. He offered me advice on protecting my family and staying within the confines of the law. I was always taught that God gave us one mouth and two ears meaning we should listen twice as much as we talk. I listened to what Zac and the young lady had to say and now I am the richer for it. Over the years I have made more than a few purchases here, a bit over $3000 now. But that was out of ignorance. To be fair these guys are knowledgeable, and the inventory is good. I live close by so this was an obvious choice for some purchases. The staff seem borderline hostile and aggressive. If it was not for the convenience of the location I would never come here. I could feel them looking at me with some level of distain and anger when I would ask some basic questions about ammo as if I was expected to know the answer. Unlike some of these other reviews, I thought the customer service here was A+. No bs wasting time and they know their products. I guess if you want to be coddled this might not be the place for you, but for me personally I found them to be honest, attentive, and very knowledgeable. All of my questions were answered, respectfully (and I'm inexperienced, so asked quite a few questions), and knowledge was shared with me about guns that I was considering, plus changes in laws recently and newer guns to consider as similar alternatives. I'd done a decent amount of research beforehand, was initially planning on ordering from Bud's Guns and paying transfer fees but found Canyon Sports to be about the same cost so was happy to buy from them and support local instead. read more

Don't bother. I called ahead/ looking for a specific Kimber 1911. They had it.. Went in the following day to go start paperwork on it if it was still in stock. Big dude/beard seemed busy with other people so I waited for an opening. then asked if everything in the case was "display only" or all for sale. and he said "that's a stupid question, why would a store not f*ckin sell what they have in front of you" and i looked up at him, and said "excuse me? Guns, fishing and other stuff is like that." "well why the fuck did you go there? should only be shopping here" and I said "well they were closer to where I was, when i was looking" and shook my head. then he backtracked and goes "only stuff that's display only is law enforcement unless you show me a badge. This industry is a fellowship that this business does not care about. I've known the owner of this store since before they had a store and I've known the manager for 17 years. Myself and my family as well as friends and coworkers have spent massive money in the store. The loyalty they show me is a 200% mark up over what their sticker that they scratched out shows... After complaining they give me the deal of a lifetime which is still 60% over the sticker. The sticker on the box has their mark up and profit built into it which equates to roughly 80% mark up at best probably 90 over cost... And identical item on their shelf that they have on sale for $1100 I bought from another local store for 549... this other local store has 1/10 of their buying power and made money at 549... Enjoy your millions gentlemen I'm not gonna help you get there! Update: since apparently this establishment feels the need to mention this review two other friends upon entering the store I feel I should get a little more accurate. The above story was not actually me in the store it was my father in the store with me on the phone. The reason that it was that way is because I had already told my father I would never shop at the store again because of the way I saw them treating people that we're not experienced gun people. Not to mention when I was in the store is when I noticed the $1100 glocks. When I asked about the price Zack simply replied with I am the only one that has them I can charge what I want. That comment is definitely entertaining because I just bought one a week prior at another local shop for the above mentioned $549. when I was in the shop I did buy a biometric pistol safe made a couple of comments that Zack completely blew off and then I left the store. since this is happened not only have I heard from a few people that Zack has mentioned this with you to people that he knows know me. on top of that my father was looking for some powder and called Canyon sports and I am told that Zack said I recognize this voice for you it's $100 a pound. My father continued making phone calls found a shop in Antioch and bought all the powder he needed at an extremely reasonable price. I wish the owner of the store Ron Kennedy would look at all of the reviews from longtime customers that are very similar to this one and start reaching out to them figure out how to bring them back. He thinks Zack has made him a ton of money but in my opinion what Zack has done is allowed Ron to basically retire while he has sent countless customers elsewhere myself included. A quote from my go to gun shop: the day I have to start price gouging my customers is the day I close my doors... That is a real business owner, that is somebody that I want to spend my money with. I have been a customer of Canyon Sports since 1998. My Uncle John worked for Ron Kennedy at Canyon for 10+ years and was a fixture in the store. Today after traveling an hour to get to Canyon, I went to the store to show my co-worker what was once the best gun store in the Bay Area, I was completely disrespected by the heavy set bearded guy behind the counter. After being herded like sheep in a line we were berated by the counter worker for simply talking amongst ourselves in line. There's no longer the family/friendly atmosphere that once was in this store. I simply remarked to my co worker that times had changed and was asked to leave the store, and was told by the counter worker he would call the police if I didn't move faster. I have never been so disrespected in my life. My uncle is rolling over in his grave. Ron, if you see this. You've not only lost my business but the business of my co-worker and my family who has shopped at Canyon for decades. We are all law enforcement, fire fighters and first responders. You may want to reconsider heavy set bearded gentleman's employment. We are a very respectful group of people who don't deserve to be treated the way heavy set bearded guy treated us. I called ahead of time and then went in a couple hours later, but unfortunately I cut it a little too close to closing and they had already put away their Kimber selection, including the 1911 Raptor I had called about. They were still really nice when I walked in and showed me a couple of items and I said I'd be back the next day, with the full intention of returning, but then I was able to find the same item elsewhere and save a little bit of money, so I didn't end up making it back in, but I'll def come back another time to check out their great selection! read more

I don't get the negative reviews, my experience has been nothing but great! I took up trap shooting and had never owned a gun. The staff made me feel comfortable and was very helpful in providing direction and guidance through the purchasing process. I've returned a couple of times and have again been treated with respect and a huge amount of knowledge, not to mention a large inventory of everything I could possibly need. I've visited other stores in the area (small to superstores) and much rather do business with the folks at Canyon sports. Like many of my Gun Control anti-NRA friends, I decided to buy home defense weapons. Defunding police, already noticeable slower response times, increasing general atmosphere of lawlessness, and on top of that, as a Chinese American, the increase of anti-Chinese sentiment of assaults as well as racist swearing. In the Bay Area too- my brother was called the "C" word twice. Well, the times they are a-changing AGAIN! Gun stores were rapidly selling out of popular guns, but when I called Canyon, they had a limited supply of what I wanted, a 9mm and a pump action shotgun. The woman was gruff but direct and answered all my many questions. They also gave the Firearms Safety Check which I had to pass first in order to buy that same day. I was advised to arrive around 8:30 am and so got in first. I assume it was the same gruff woman (sorry, I didn't catch your name!) I talked to, but actually she was just no-nonsense efficient, which I was when running a busy business. Also, they can only let one or two customers at a time and so please don't educate yourself there. Do your research on-line, figure out your budget, the popular brands, and what you want. Save yourself time and keep the line outside moving. And them in business. So, I after passed the test, which she administered, she expeditiously filled out my registration forms, issued me my 5-year license to buy guns, and help me select my 9mm. Zack helped me select my shotgun, answering all my questions. The woman then completed sales slips, background check forms, etc., and then told me to come back 10 days later once Cal Dept of Justice cleared to own a legal weapon. As we waited for receipts to print out, we finally had a relaxed chat. Yeah, she's a nice lady. The different forms do ask you three times if you were born in the USA, so please do not take that personal. Finally, there is a TRUMP FOR PREZ sign over the cash register. But these people are business like and respectful to everyone. Besides 2 white customers, I saw an African-American buying ammunition. No difference in attitude. I ended up with two European brands, both which rate highly in my research with US Gun enthusiasts on-line and YouTube. Can't wait to test them at a range. read more

I was curious about this place because there were so many grumpy, negative reviews. I actually went there to buy ammunition and to be honest, it was a very pleasant experience. The staff are personable and very professional - in other words, they know their shit. To be clear, I'm not your normal, gun-wielding, second amendment freak. I'm as liberal as it gets. But this isn't a nail salon. If you want "warm and fuzzy," go get a milkshake or your hair done. canyon's is a gun store and it's also a place where they have to put up with a plethora of stupid questions. I don't go there to shoot the breeze, so I was extremely happy with the way my purchase went and all of my stupid questions were answered. They are social distancing and wearing masks during COVID so kudos to them for that too. It will be my go to store following this visit. read more
