Visiting the New York area for work and I decided to try some pizza. Walked into a cool vibe with creaky floors and visible fiery brick oven. I believe I'm in for some great pizza. Instead, as I walk in there are 3 ladies all near the register, so I walk to the "wait to be seated sign" so I stood and waited. The older of the 3 began to task the younger 2 with cleaning the she walked to a back office. They all saw me but no one said a word. I stand for 5 minutes and each of them take multiple looks at me and go back about their business. After the 5 minutes another gentleman walks in and the all make an effort to go take his order, but he noticed I was waiting and said I think he's first. The older lady says "no, he's been helped, I said no I was wasn't, I've been waiting to be seated, Then pointed out they all saw me and two cleaned then hid behind the servers wall and peaked out occasionally to see if I was still there and you went to the back office and peeked out occasionally. She then says, we'll let me get this guy first. Even he said no, he was before me. I then told the guy to go ahead and I returned to my car. I simply can't eat somewhere after any type of altercation like that. If they are willing to treat a customer like that to their face, what are they willing to do to their food. read more

First time trying this place. We were looking for brick oven pizza. It was nice. We ordered personal pies, I got extra cheese and my s/o got pepperoni. We both enjoyed it. For an appetizer I would have loved garlic knots, but they didn't have so we got the garlic bread instead. It was good. Had to ask for plates though as they just set down the appetizer on a small paper plate for us to share. Service was ok, nothing special. It's a very casual kind of place. Loved the decor. Went here at 7:45 to sit down in the dining area and have dinner. Didn't leave until 9:15. Waited 1 hour, yes 1 hour, for a pizza. Not once was I given an update on my order. Very sad to see an old childhood favorite go downhill like this. read more

I thought there was no good pizza in Rockland County until I found this place. They have brixkoven pizza which is one of the best Ive had. Also the menu is extensive..The subs are great, Ive tried the veal, chicken parm and the pepper and egg. All were fantastic. They use very good bread. No delivery but worth the ride. read more

So, I'm not from Nanuet, or Rockland County, or even New York for that matter. I was passing through the area and had a craving for pizza. Luckily I stumbled onto this little gem and wasn't disappointed at all. I ordered a large pizza and it really was that good. I love thin crust pizza and these guys nailed it. It came out nice and hot, and looked delicious. And of course it was. Hell, even the salads were good. I don't see many places that put celery in their salads, but it worked. I can only guess that the dressing was homemade, because it was good too. Unfortunately, since I was only passing thru, I didn't get a chance to order any cold beverages. Maybe next time. It's too bad you guys aren't my local pizza place - I'd be a regular for sure. But then again, I like being able to fit in my pants when I want to wear them. And having you guys too close could be a problem in that regard. So thanks again Yelpers for turning me on to this place. And thank you Martio's for a completely satisfying meal. read more

This is a Nanuet institution. Sit-down is busy on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. Take out business is brisk out on most evenings. Best food here are the personal pizza (amazingly thin and crisp, but expect it to be slightly charred from the real wood burning oven), the regular slices, the cold cut combo (delicious), garlic bread, and lasagne. Decent food overall. But you must try the personal pizza... only available after 5:00pm. Small bonus is that the women on the waitstaff aren't bad looking either in their white t-shirts. Update Dec 19, 2008: Don't ever get the meatballs. The meatballs are like Matzo Balls. I mean seriously how about putting in more meat. The whole thing is mostly breading like 70%. My favorite pizza place in Rockland County!!! I LOVE the brick oven pizza. . The regular pizza is great too but i usually get the brick oven when I'm in the pizza mood. Otherwise I usually get the Baked Ziti. The side salad with mozzarella is always fresh and tasty. For desert I love the canolis!! Yum. Been coming here for many many years. Our waitress completely vanished on us. And it's not a cavernous place to get lost in either! Other tables were getting service but not ours... Our drinks ran dry and we completely finished our meals without the typical "how you doing" from our waitress. My one child never got her slice of pizza and we lost hope about having coffee or desert here. I hate having to hunt down the servers. For the service alone, we will not be coming back. The food was good. Nothing to complain about. Maybe takeout is their thing. I don't know. Net net - if you go here, you stand a very good chance of having some good food. I have been coming to this pizza restaurant for 35 years. The Italian combo I ordered in 1980 taste like the combo I ordered today outstanding. A blond woman who owns it was a waitress back then and a great person. They used to have a rope and pulley system to open the door for those carrying out pies. Some updates are probably needed in the furniture but it might take away from the ambience. How about trying some nice local top craft beers? I'll eat here till the day I die. read more

One of our favorite family-style restaurants. The main attraction is the wood fired individual pizzas, but the large non-wood fired are excellent too. Noisy but pleasant ambience with earthy wood decor. Smallish but adequate menu includes well done Italian ices and gelato. read more

I was traveling for business and this place popped up on Yelp. I try to support small businesses whenever I can. The menu isn't very big but when you do something right, keep doing it. My coworker and I ordered the same thing - a small pepperoni pizza and side salad. The food was very good. I like when you can tell that the salad was chopped by someone in the restaurant and didn't get pulled out of a bag. The pizza was the right size and none of it went to waste. Service was quick and attentive but didn't make us feel rushed. I'd go back here if I return to the area. I'd like to try some of their other Italian specialties. The place was full of locals and there are many other choices nearby. Skip the chains and support this place. read more

I have been there before and it's a 50/50 chance you get good service and food used to be better. I haven't been their for a while and forgot they don't give you refills on Ice Tea or soda. We had a few refills and got bill and BOOM they charged us for every refill and to make matters worse server never added ice and we had not so cold drinks. the pizza we had was just okay, need more sauce and cheese. When server brought check I asked her why didn't you tell us they charge for refills she just said sorry and walked away. Nanuet Restaurant down the street has much better pizza more cheese and sauce. read more

I brought some friends who live in Connecticut to Martio's the other day. They usually go for pizza at Sally's or Pepe's in New Haven, which are considered the best of the best. (Both claim to have invented pizza!) However, both my friends enthusiastically told me several times during our meal that Martio's is even BETTER! I have to agree. The crispy wood-fired thin crispy crust, just the right amount of cheese and perfect sauce. My friends liked it so much that they bought an extra pizza to bring all the way back home. We moved up to rockland county about 2 years ago and stuggled to find any good pizza in our close area. We had even been to Martios a few times before, but it wasn't until we got a sicilian pie that we were impressed. They have a really legit sicilian pie at Martios, and it rivals my top pick, Sun Ray in little falls nj. But, to get up to par, it needs a little more flavor in the dough. Pizza served with a bunch of religious bull! Really do we need to read the ten commandments and other religious quotes in order to get a table.? We ordered a couple of pies and a couple of sandwiches. The meatball parmesan sub was dry. I asked for some marinara and the waitress seemed put off. I got the feeling she just didn't like us because she never brought me the sauce and for that matter didnt serve us for the rest of our dinner. By the way the Jesus i know would never seve a dry meatball sub. Someone should do penance for that mistake! Pizza was good. Service was bad. And the dose of religion was off putting. Just finished eating a few slices of Martio's. Wished I'd stopped at one; guess I was hoping "it was just me". It's them. Martio's has been around for a while and USED TO BE excellent. I have been going to Martio's with my family for over 12 years. The place is a landmark in Rockland, and really - is worth the trip. They have a great space - that is a little rustic looking (feels really warm from the outside - and it's great and homey inside). Their special is the personal sized brick oven pizza (the edges are definitely burnt), and I have been getting that pizza for years - and it's always absolutely great. The pizza can only have 3 toppings - but is made amazingly well. I am a huge fan of it - and it's just the right size. Their soup is good, their salads are huge - they have their own gelato - which is always a great treat. The prices are also totally right ($1.75 for a beer?!). I've never gotten slices from here - but I imagine it's great. read more

Whenever I come back to see the folks (live in pizza-deprived CA now), this is my first and last stop. Martio's pizza is pretty much the touchstone upon which I compare all other pizzas and seriously, none have ever come remotely close. What is it? The brick oven? The tanginess of the sauce? The perfectly thin, but properly droopy crust? I don't know, but altogether, it's something that I long for between visits. I love that it's family owned and hasn't changed over the years. Same decor - the tiffany lamps are great. The husband and wife who run it have not changed in all of the years I've been going, either. Seriously, if you love pizza, you must go to Martio's. I lived in Nanuet for a short time and I found this gem of a pizza place. It is as old as the town and I have seen pictures on the wall there to prove it. The decor is very old, but I love the personal sized pizza and keep going back for more. The crust is very thin and crispy and just the right size plus they use a wood burning oven to add flavor. The other hot item I seem to always get is the sub sandwich, but locally there they call it a cold cut combo. They toast the roll in the wood burning oven and put the ham, salami, cheese, tomato, onions, lettuce on with some oil and vinegar and spices for the perfect combo! I would say not a great place to impress a date, but it is well respected and great people work there. And it is real so maybe your date will be impressed with you after all. read more

I am originally from Brooklyn, NY so it's been hard for me to find good pizza in Rockland County. I came in with my father and son, and we ordered a plain pie, as well as a pepperoni pie. The plain pie was delicious which is the only reason I am giving it four stars. The pepperoni pie wasn't so great only because of the pepperoni. They use some little dime sized pepperoni that is most likely packaged, and doesn't taste very good. I also ordered pasta e fagioli, it had no flavor, probably because there was no onion or prosciutto in it. The girls who work here are very friendy, however, one creeps me out a little bit because the two times I have gone there she stares at me the whole time. read more

I moved away about 10 years ago, but was in the neighborhood, so I had to try it again. Just as good as I'd remembered! The perfect pizza. We got a 16-inch pie with pepperoni and meatballs. Even the small garden salads were good. The only con was the service tonight - our glasses were sitting empty and it was hard to get the waitress' attention to get refills or the check.
