Maru was a quiet surprise for us. Only two employees working and two customers but the food spoke for itself. They have a large menu but of course we came for sushi. We shared three rolls and scarfed them down! We got the Dragon Roll, 007, and the Maru Special Roll. They really go heavy with the sauces which we loved!! Korean food is almost always underrepresented in most areas. I would happily take a few fewer mediocre Chinese restaurants if it meant a few more Korean restaurants. Until that happens, Omaha can enjoy Maru's strong Korean dishes, while also getting a terrific selection of freshly made sushi rolls. We started with a freshly brewed tea, though there are many other options. The caterpillar roll is substantial with perfectly cooked rice and wonderfully fresh avocado on top. And, look at that cool caterpillar look from the top view. I got the pork bibimbap, which is billed as a 2-pepper spicy level, but it was only mildly spicy. It doesn't normally get served with an egg, but I added one. And...yes, it does what a great bibimbap does so well: it lets you scoop up sizzling rice along with substantial meat and vegetables. There's so much here that I couldn't possibly eat it all. My mom and brother got the traditional (beef) bulgogi and chicken bulgogi, respectively. The seasoning is robust on both, but it really suits the beef better. On the other hand, the beef had a huge oval-shaped bone through every piece. There wasn't much meat left once you cut around it. You will also receive a plate with kimchi, potato, broccoli, and bean sprouts, which helped as an additional mix-in for your dish. The service was fast, and patient considering how long it took us to order. There were so many terrific options on the menu that you could come here several times and get something great every time. read more

This was the place I've been searching for! I was craving sushi and with being new to the area I have been meaning to try Maru. I am so happy I did as everything exceeded my expectations. The pork bulgogi was flavorful in all the right ways. Huge portion of meat and order includes rice, veggies, kimchi & potatoes. I could have filled up on the pork but wanted to try other dishes being a first timer. The chicken Udon was out of this world, another large portion and super tasty. It wasn't overloaded with veggies, good amount of chicken - perfect balance. Crab rangoons were ideally made. I also got three sushi rolls, shrimp tempura, spicy shrimp tempura and spider. After all this is what I was craving, needless to say I got sidetracked by the appealing menu. Sushi was darn good, but not exceptional. The rolls were a little loose and kept falling apart but that didn't impact the fresh flavor, I just felt super white having to eat it with a fork haha. Will I get it it again? Likely. I like the Korean food here but we haven't been back in a while. They used to have really good sushi too but it seems the last few times we've tried it, it's been so-so. The ambience is great and the service has always been good. We haven't found amazing Korean food in Omaha but it's worth a try here. read more

My boyfriend and I headed out here for dinner one night when it was almost hitting warmer weather. Year 2020 threw us all in a bind that created a new sense of norm. As more restaurants and retailers began welcoming customers more and relaxing some of the restrictions based on state mandates we decided to actually have a dine in meal somewhere. We both LOVE Korean food, well, almost all food, but Asian food specifically so this place was on the top of our list to dine at. The restaurant is well equipped to handle crowds if need be but on this evening there was one other table occupied and two people waiting for carry out orders via grubhub or door dash. We were seated at the far end of the restaurant next to the wall, a good distance away from the other table allowing for social distancing. The waitress serving us was pleasant and friendly, remembered to fill our waters appropriately and gave us enough time to study the menu. I decided on the grilled mackerel while my boyfriend had the chicken bibimbap bowl. We also had an order of the spicy tuna rolls and ceviche. We loved the spicy tuna rolls, the ceviche was okay. I'm glad we tried it but the winner for the small bites were the rolls and the accompaniments with our main meals. My mackerel was one of those dishes where looks are very much deceiving. It looked underwhelming to me but I was oh so wrong as soon as I took my first bite. The fist was cooked perfectly, no fishy taste or weird toughness. It was tender and the flavors managed to seep in throughout the entire piece of meat. I loved it! My boyfriend's bowl of bibimbap was steaming with heat and a huge portion for one person. He also loved his bowl! He loved it so much he order the same thing as a to go order a few weeks later!! I'm so glad this restaurant is still going strong. My son and I stopped on our way through town. We started with calamari and I had the Lion King roll. I'd never seen a roll lit on fire. The roll had so many flavors and textures. The alcohol they used gave the sushi a sweet, smoky depth. For dessert we had tempura green tea icecream. The best icecream I've ever had. read more

Our first experience with Korean food! Yummy. Service was awesome. Daughter and I had traditional bibimbap and hubby had beef bibimbap. It's served in a hot stone bowl and stays sizzling for a long time. Rice is on the bottom. Ours was spicier than just beef. Son-in-law had sushi. We waited about ten minutes before she asked us if we wanted anything to drink. I tried to get her attention to let her know and she told me to wait she will be back. She answered her phone and walked to the back while she was laughing and carrying on a conversation on the phone. I was pleasantly surprised by Maru. I saw the mix of Japanese and Korean and wondered if they would be able to pull it off (it is Omaha after all) but I really enjoyed the dish I ordered. I got the pork bulgogi, which was basically a spicy stir fry served with steamed white rice. The flavor profile was fantastic...ginger, sesame, and the right amount of heat. The pork was tender and juicy. The dish also came with a few cold "side dishes" which were small dishes of pickled vegetables, kimchi, sweet potatoes, etc. most of these were pretty tasty, and was nice to have another temperature. The atmosphere was comfortable and modern. Our waiter was polite but very quiet. I am intrigued by some of the other items on their menu and will be back to try them! read more

Bulgogi and Bibimbap and Banchan, Oh My! Maru has been on my "to try" list for probably well over a year now, and finally we end up near enough and hungry enough to get there and fill my belly. Clearly I was very happy with the results. We were the only diners in the place when we arrived around 8pm, but a couple other tables filled in as the evening wore on. We were treated to a TV in the corner of the bar playing some kind of WWE wresting (which I'm slightly embarrassed to say I couldn't take my eyes off of for some reason), and a gigantic picture of rocks, which had a nice calming effect. As you'd expect we had really great service and all of the food came out H-O-T. Maybe it was the fact that its been a while since I've actually had Korean food, but wow! The crunchy rice, the spicy potatoes, the fried pot stickers, and obviously the kimchi. Wow wow wow. When can I come back? The Bibimbap I ordered, "A large granite stone bowl of Korean short grained rice topped with refreshing Korean garden vegetable side dishes," was topped off with pork-bulgogi. But next time I'm kicking it up a notch with a fried egg too! Ooooh, I can't wait. The only challenge for me, and this is by no means a disadvantage, is that the food was almost TOO hot. Not spicy... temperature. Apparently I prefer my meals just hot, not 'piping hot and continuing to cook at the table.' Though I was pretty delighted by the sizzling of the sesame oil as it crisped up the rice to perfection... like it was telling me naughty food secrets... The Mandoo were good too (we opted for these as a more 'traditional' starter, since I'd never had them... but I did, and still do, have my eye on the avocado boat. If they execute all their food here as well as the items we tried, Maru will pretty quickly climb my favorites list for sure. read more

We don't drive through Omaha very often but when we do we always try to have lunch here at Maru Sushi and Korean Grill. After our first visit for lunch we were hooked. Much as I want to explore the menu, I had to order the Beef Bulgogi again, just because. It came with traditional Korean sides: marinated bean sprouts, spicy pickles, and potatoes with hot peppers. My wife ordered the Hoi-Dup Bab Korean fusion lunch special; basically a bowl of sashimi and vegetables with a sweet chili sauce. Everything showed up in a few quick minutes and we were having a delicious lunch. About ten minutes after I ate potatoes and peppers, my mouth started the road to recovery. One of the best Bulgogi dishes I've ever had. My wife was very happy with her choice as well. Last time she had the Bibimbab that was also excellent. Next time I will try harder to explore the menu.
