As luck would have it, I found an Indian grocery nearby at 151 Spruce Street, across from the hospital parking lot. It's Aapnar Bazar. And what a surprise. The store is bright and sparkling clean. It has many staples for Indian cooking, including curry leaves. Among other surprises there, I spotted some tiny masoor dal lentils and bought a bag. Yesterday I cooked up a batch based on a recipe from Raghavan Iyer's masterpiece, 600 Curries. The dish was delicious. Aapnar Bazar has lots of very fresh vegetables and quite a lot of good looking frozen fish. I was very impressed with the shop and have been recommending it to everyone interested in the best ingredients for home style Indian cuisine. Many items, particularly the vegetables, are suitable for any style cuisine.

Inside, it is exactly what you would expect from a classic mom and pop Italian deli. Small, warm, welcoming, decently lit, and clean. They also have a huge menu with tons of options, not even counting everything available at the deli counter. I took my time looking over the menu and the staff was patient while I decided. I ordered a sausage, egg, and cheese with black pepper on a wedge and a bacon, egg, and cheese lightly toasted on white bread. The wedge was the highlight. Big portion, very filling, and everything tasted fresh and high quality. It was cooked and put together really well. My only small critique is that the bread was very soft and the eggs were falling out a bit, but I also did not ask for it toasted so that may be on me. The bacon, egg, and cheese on white bread was good as well. The only downside was that it was very lightly toasted, almost not toasted at all, and it used bacon pieces instead of strips. Overall, this is an excellent local deli with quality food, generous portions, and a welcoming feel. I would definitely recommend stopping by, and I will absolutely be back.

This location is a little smaller than the other location we visited on our day or two in the area, but it has more seating for enjoying what they make/offer. Another really nice shop/store whether you need to do some grocery shopping or are hungry for a snack, lunch, or dinner (those fresh onigiri looked delicious)!

I got a Yuzu tea while my friends got a matcha latte and we got a strawberry cream tart to share. The Yuzu was fragrant and the tart was nice and light, exactly what you'd expect from an Asian dessert -- "not too sweet". When we were done, we happily perused all of the goods in the store. They had so many different Japanese offerings, it was so nice to see -- ceramics, teas, snacks, cooked food, etc. There was SO much, and on top of that, they seemed to have almost all of the Harney & Son's offerings, including the special edition teas like the Death of the Nile and Murder on The Orient Express.
