As luck would have it, I found an Indian grocery nearby at 151 Spruce Street, across from the hospital parking lot. It's Aapnar Bazar. And what a surprise. The store is bright and sparkling clean. It has many staples for Indian cooking, including curry leaves. Among other surprises there, I spotted some tiny masoor dal lentils and bought a bag. Yesterday I cooked up a batch based on a recipe from Raghavan Iyer's masterpiece, 600 Curries. The dish was delicious. Aapnar Bazar has lots of very fresh vegetables and quite a lot of good looking frozen fish. I was very impressed with the shop and have been recommending it to everyone interested in the best ingredients for home style Indian cuisine. Many items, particularly the vegetables, are suitable for any style cuisine.

Inside, it is exactly what you would expect from a classic mom and pop Italian deli. Small, warm, welcoming, decently lit, and clean. They also have a huge menu with tons of options, not even counting everything available at the deli counter. I took my time looking over the menu and the staff was patient while I decided. I ordered a sausage, egg, and cheese with black pepper on a wedge and a bacon, egg, and cheese lightly toasted on white bread. The wedge was the highlight. Big portion, very filling, and everything tasted fresh and high quality. It was cooked and put together really well. My only small critique is that the bread was very soft and the eggs were falling out a bit, but I also did not ask for it toasted so that may be on me. The bacon, egg, and cheese on white bread was good as well. The only downside was that it was very lightly toasted, almost not toasted at all, and it used bacon pieces instead of strips. Overall, this is an excellent local deli with quality food, generous portions, and a welcoming feel. I would definitely recommend stopping by, and I will absolutely be back.

They just toss food and items into paper bags. They don't ask if you'd like chopsticks, and they remain so unfriendly that customers have to pack everything into the bag themselves--they do nothing until you specifically ask for chopsticks. Can this really be called a Japanese restaurant? Given my position, I'm quite particular about discipline and manners, but I rarely reprimand people I don't know. However, since the situation was so bad, I did speak up--but they must have held a grudge, because their attitude has been even worse ever since.
