I just finished hiking almost 10 miles to Rangitoto volcano so I was happy to sit at the kitchen counter . Selection of NZ and Oz beers but nothing great that I tried. Quite disappointed in my fish sandwich for $20nzd. My 2 friends had the fish & chips for $26nzd and definitely got the better deal. My sandwich had one smallish piece of fish on it. My fiends received 3 nice size pieces of fish. Ample amount of fries with both. And okay amount of nice minty mushy peas. Not near enough tartar sauce and no malt vinegar offered. No check back to see if we might need anything else. I think with the amount of competition in this area they might want to step up their game. read more

I liked this place a lot, just think I ordered something that wasn't for me - but definitely willing to go back. After a day of walking along the harbor, we finally arrived at Marvel for wine, food, and people watching. I have no complaints about the service or the ambience. The experience itself was very relaxing, nice to catch s cool breeze by the water and watch the boats and seaplanes. The boy got the fish and chips (I found myself eating more of his meal than mine), while I got classic oysters and the chicken crackling Caesar salad. Starting with the good, the fish was battered and fried to crispy, golden perfection. The tarter sauce underneath had an herb essence and complimented the fish (and chips) beautifully. If I can recommend something, it'll be this dish! My salad, unfortunately was very heavy. Yes, a salad with fried chicken skin (and panko fried hard boiled egg) isn't the healthiest, but I assumed other elements would be lighter to balance out the dish. The salad was overdressed and had just too much bacon, which resulted in too much salt and heartburn. I suggest less of the bacon and dressing, perhaps some lemon on the side to brighten everything up. Besides this, I enjoyed Marvel. Wine selection is very good, mostly NZ obviously. They have monthly wine selections, as well as specialty cocktails and pitchers. read more

The main reason to come here is to have a terrific glass of wine with the fireworks smoked meat plate. Wow that dish alone is five stars. The Brisket is great so tender and savory. The pork ribs are to die for and the beef cheeks so spicy and flavorful. A great glass of a big Pinot is all you need. Plus the view is terrific. Along this vibrant stretch of harbor with great views. If you don't like the smoke everywhere get a spot across from the smoke. Also the hand cut French fries are a great accompaniment. read more

There is no happy hour, but I'd still recommend this place for their seafood! We tried their calamari, scallops, and octopus! All which I highly recommend. The octopus was smoked and cooked to perfection. Not rubbery or tough at all, but just melts in your mouth. The scallops were served with pumpkin mousse which is a combination that I've never had, but nevertheless the marriage of the two went well, something you wouldn't expect. The calamari had this southern cayenne pepper like taste to it, which was delicious and served with an avocado mousse. All three dishes were amazing, and I really appreciate the detail the chef went into cooking and presenting these wonderful dishes. However, the portions are small so I wouldn't come here and expect one dish to fill you. For dessert we got the NZ Pav - which is a meringue dish (crispy on the outside, with a soft fluffy marshmallow texture on the inside) that includes lemon curd, rhubarb, and vanilla ice cream. Marvel Grill has a very classy yet comforting atmosphere, with hanging plants, tiny strands of lights and a well-stated decor. There is a dining area around the bar and kitchen which further extends outside among heaters and another smaller bar, that is still well enclosed from the elements for cold nights. The menu has the right selection of seafood delights, both local and common, along with a good share of meats and sides. The wine list could use some variety but there were a few craft beers available and cocktails to suit. We went with the Cobb Caesar salad, a large portion fit for sharing. Panko crusted anchovies and a hard boiled egg made it a unique and tasty twist on a classic. I highly recommend it. The seafood platter wasn't the grandiose towering dish we expected but actually served us well. Just the right amount of seafood types to sample. Two kinds of oysters, two types of fish, prawns and calamari. The beetroot marinated salmon was a surprising favourite along with the spicy oyster shooters. Service was decent but was awkward when it was clearly time to leave, as our plates had been cleared, dessert refused and still no check. We had to flag down the waitress. Still, it was a fantastic meal and the view overlooking the harbour couldn't be beat, unless it was a clear night. read more

Dinner #1 in New Zealand was my fave for a long time - I eventually found better, but I still remember this clam chowder. It was actually reminiscent of oyster stew, or at least the oyster stew my family makes. Kind of milky, not thickened or creamy, with a little butter or oil floating on top. Plenty of clam and potato, etc, but also a few mussels in the shell, which I quickly liberated and dropped in to the broth, and there was a tad bit of oyster-esque flavor in there. Plus really nice grilled bread to dunk in the soup - as usual, I could eat a couple loaves of bread in one sitting if you gave me a bowl of good broth to soak it in, and this would not have been an exception. Other diners had excellent fish, and a side of broccolini with hollandaise was very good as well, crisp but not raw, with a nicely balanced hollandaise. I feel like too many places make it too bland (although I also admit I like it way more lemon-y than most people, the way my mother makes it.) Price, as we would discover throughout New Zealand for food like this, was very reasonable to my taste. I would expect to pay significantly more for food of this quality in the US. This was a theme on our visit, and we are *not* complaining about it, that's for sure. read more

We actually intended to try out Johnny Barrs, we're hunting out all of Aucklands mac n cheese options, but for some reason we felt drawn to Marvel Grill instead. The menu looked promising and they had both mac n cheese and clam chowder! We had: Clam chowder - 4/5 Tasty, hot and delicious. The bread bowl was good but we felt like a few extra pieces to dip.spoon with would have put it up in the 5/5 area. Grilled Vegetable Salad 5/5 - I wasn't expecting to like this salad so much. I don't go crazy for salads but this was delicious Mac n Cheese 1/5 - Sorry but it was kinda tasteless. I mean I could taste salt, and the texture was pretty good but without a nice cheesy flavour it didn't do anything for me. Chicken Crackling Caesar Salad 3/5 - Delicious at first, especially the anchovies but very quickly it was just salt overload. Needs something to balance it out. Has the potential to be a 5/5 but needs slight reworking. Service was great and the Maítre D' was exceptional. read more

Sorry. No. The prawns were cold (they were supposed to be hot), the oysters were warm (they were raw) and the octopus was definitely not fresh. This was a disappointment. The only good part was salmon gravlax and the wine selection. I had buyers remorse but couldn't really verbalize it cos our waiter was kind of sweet. Anyway, just avoid this place and pay nearly double for the freshness of Depot or some other place. The food here is just awful. I'll be happy if I don't get sick. had our team xmas lunch here today 17.12.18. Pre-booked lunches for 12 - 2pm to avoid waiting time, still waited over 45mins before we got our lunches. Indian (i think) waiter reached past our faces to serve the other side and got all our drink orders mixed up. Food orders were mixed up and my lunch was the last to arrive at 1.15pm and it was COLD!!! Had to ask for a takeaway container so I can pack food to go as everyone had eaten their lunches. Disappointed to pay full price for real crap service and food quality was crap...was really looking fwd to digging into those sticky pork ribs but when its served cold because of your staff muck up no thanks!! Will not recommend this place or go back to this place again - its a real shame tho cos this place is set at a perfect location. Thanks to that French waiter who served us with a smile just to cover up the flaws. I still paid full price for my food ... totally gutted! read more
