Being a homeowner, especially on Long Island, can be a curse…read more The houses built in the Levitt & Sons era were constructed quickly and likely weren't expected to last as long as, say, the Wyckoff House in Brooklyn (built in 1641 -- go see it!). The builders of my house probably figured that by the 21st century, we'd be living in outer space like the Jetsons, not knowing that by then we'd still be in these tiny unpredictable homes, which now feel as modern the Flintstone abode, minus the animal-appliances that grunt, "It's a living." They say if anything can go wrong, it will, and with a house old enough to collect Social Security -- and I wish it could, instead of me paying off a 900-year mortgage -- everything does. It's bad enough when a toilet no longer flushes or the front door is askew and ajar. Worse are those "out of sight, not out of mind" problems like a water heater that suddenly dies, or a water from a leak appearing in a place you normally don't look. Such is the case with a roof. Unless it rains in your living room, you likely take it for granted. Earlier this year we had a contractor replace the windows that had been installed during the Kennedy Administration and they checked out our roof and returned with some grim news, the roofing equivalent of testing positive for AIDS and cancer and type-seven diabetes. The price they suggested was somewhere north of astronomical, so we decided to get estimates from other contractors. This is always a tedious process because you have to make appointments and be at the house during a time window and sit in the living room while they walk all over the roof and return with information that you can't really verify. Also, I'm terribly antisocial and hate talking to people, but that's a discussion for another Yelp post. Fortunately, and despite a wide range of diagnoses, none of the roofers I met with came off as fly-by-night ripoff artists. But we went with Charlie from USA Remodeling: he was thorough with his analysis of my roof situation and identified a problem area around my chimney that he could remedy without having to tackle the entire roof. It wasn't a major job, but I was grateful that his crew was able to complete the work in one day. He not only fixed the problem area, but he added better ventilation, including two new vents, so the roofing can breathe better and last longer. And now *I* can breathe better, and will likely hire Charlie to do my siding. As long as my cesspool holds up until then. FIVE STARS

Especially installing sheetrock. Every and I mean every cutout for the lights was measured wrong. So many sheets of sheetrock needed to be replaced. But maria ( the boss of the 2 person show ) knows everything. Or so she thinks. According to Miss Perfect its everyone else that lies. Maria and her side kick NEVER make mistakes. Gave them over $20,000 in jobs in our home total. Re-built wheel chair ramp. They were great…read morewhile doing the jobs, year and half later contacted because some of the PVC post came loose. Also requested assistance with range microwave installed for my 75yr old mother that she couldn't open and shakes. Initially contacted and understood due to covid circumstances. Stood patient for 5 months )12/20-5/21 with checkins. Always given a run around. Even lied and gave run around when my mother even called. Town finally came to inspect, gave them 4 weeks notice, still never came. Was fined by town for certain things with ramp when contacted them (ONLY Through Text, because they never answered phone) Maria the wife told me "DO NOT CONTACT US ANYMORE YOU COULD OF HAD ANY HANDY MAN REPAIR IT". Paid someone to come in and fix their mess, never secured post with screws so anyone leaning on ramp could fall, microwave never mounted to the wall plate. They take your money and don't guarantee any of their work. I recommended to other people and they said the same thing, nice while they are doing the work but don't guarantee or back their work. Remodeled enclosed patio over $8,000 installed windows, paneling gave me new sliding door they had at their house from another job, windows leak was told it will always do that nothing they can do. Really ??? Carpet to wood floors, Spacing from all the rooms to the saddles. Was told "let floor settle we'll come back and fix".........PS never came back gaps still there. Deck stairs painted few hundred $100s', year later peeled, had someone come in and do said stairs were never sanded and used wrong pain that is why it didn't last long. They took my money and my mother's (who is 75) money. We trusted them in our home gave them job after job with no hesitations to what was needed to be done, and when we contact to fix the wheel chair ramp of all things you snub us??? No way to do business. Unethical & unprofessional, they make you feel comfortable and at this point don't want another elderly person to be suckered by them.
