Marx Auto forged my signature and registered a car to me that I did not end up buying in order to expedite the sale. I had to drive 45 miles back to their dealership to sign paperwork for the DMV so that the vehicle would not be registered in my name. Now, 7 months later I just found out my license was about to be suspended for not paying excise tax on a car I never bought, because they elected not to submit the proper paperwork. I had to take a day off to drive 45 miles again, to get copies of the paperwork they should have submitted to go to the DMV and Town Clerk and straighten everything out. And it's worth noting that I did not buy the vehicle because they had dropped the sticker price by $1,000 on their website the day before I showed up to look at it, but neglected to tell me they had reduced the price. When I went online to show a family member pictures of the car and noticed it was listed for $1,000 less, I called Mark directly and he would not honor the price. Why? Because I had mentioned the BALD tires during the test drive and he replaced them, along with having a key FOB made since he did not have one for it. Shady people to buy cars from. Let me start by saying that my most common rating is 3-4 stars. So.. 3 stars isn't bad. I know some people see three stars and think, "eww", but that isn't the case here. We bought a Mini Cooper from Marx Auto Center and dealt with Marc this past December. He was very open to us taking it to a mechanic to have it looked at. My mechanic wasn't available, so we ended up taking it to an official dealer. There were some issues, such as a rusted out exhaust system, some slop in the transmission, ad lower tread on the tires. Marc agreed to put a new exhaust system as well as rubber on the car. The slop, the dealer said, was minor and didn't need immediate attention unless it was grinding (at the time it was not). The vehicle we purchased was in wonderful physical shape, $2k under blue book, and had super low miles (under 75k and it's an '02). Aside from some wear on the driver's(leather) seat backrest, the car would physically pass for new in my book. Marc even delivered it about 120 miles since we had one car at the time and it wouldn't get plates for another week. One thing to note is that you will have to go to the RMV if you buy from this dealership. They are not licensed to do this paperwork for you (we recently moved to MA and you guys do things a little differently than in the states we've lived previously). We did end up replacing the gear shift linkage (cause of the slop) because there was some grinding going into second. My mechanic (who had time this time around) said since there was grinding, it would essentially wear the gears faster ad recommended swapping it. The work was $500 and required dropping the exhaust. I wish I would have been more vocal about this originally, since apparently 90% of the labor (the part was $120) was dropping the transmission. This isn't the fault of Marx, and, frankly, even the Mini dealer said it likely wasn't an issue. The reason I dropped to three stars from four was that Marc called us multiple times while we were deciding on finances and what we wanted to do about repairs. After the car was purchased we had absolutely zero contact from Marc or the dealership. This was our first used car from an actual used car dealer, but when buying from new car dealers we have always been contacted and asked how we were feeling about our new purchase. I feel it is just a nice, usually final, part of customer service that shows that the dealership actually cares. We did get an automated text message that reminded us that the time for our first oil change was approaching, which is nice, but nothing like a personal call or quick email. read more

Once they took a look they showed us what was needed and how it can be fix. I highly recommend, that you stop by and see what they can do for you. My neighbor, a recent NB high graduate who is going into the Marines next month had bought his 2nd car from Marx and got the car, a Volvo, for a very reasonable price. I have no problems with this. My problem begins some time after he's been driving the car for a while. He had some type of incident while driving, shattered the radiator and somehow caused a major electrical short. Knowing that he was going to deploy soon and didn't have a lot of cash I offered to help him fix the car. He told me Marx informed him that they did a compression test and determined that the head gasket was blown. Knowing, from 25+ years of working on cars, that a compression test is in NO WAY able to definitively condemn a head gasket I went over to look at the car. The first thing I discovered is that the "mechanic" over there had left the car outside with the hood up and the ignition coils and spark plugs removed during a week where we had almost daily rain. You CANNOT leave the cylinders open with that kind of moisture in the air. The 2nd thing I noticed is that there was a hard electrical short so the engine could NOT POSSIBLY have been cranked over X 5 cylinders to do accurate compression tests. The only and proper test to do would have been a cylinder leakage test. So anyhow, without actually knowing the head gasket was bad the "mechanic" swapped engines. Obviously that didn't start as the main trouble, the electrical short hadn't been addressed yet. I believe he was charged $2k. If the head gasket did need to be changed a good mechanic would replace the head gasket, not swap motors with another motor nobody knows the history off. All the mechanics I know, and myself would have replaced the head gasket and components and swap in a good radiator for around $1000. I have absolutely no confidence in the ability of whatever mechanic worked on my neighbors car or even a manager that would approve $2k in repairs on a car he just recently sold for $2800. And one other bone to pick is the car had an absolutely filthy black air filter element in it. That is a completely inexcusable, inexpensive maintenance item to have ignored on any car sold. So, I did put a new filter element in for him as it apparently wasn't important enough for the dealer to do for him when he bought the car. They appear to have some good cars over there but I would not have them do any maintenance for me if they were the last shop in North America. Maybe I should go apply for a mechanics position there. I sincerely hope that this is an isolated incident but the more I hear the less I believe that is the case. Always bring a qualified mechanic with you if you even have a shadow of a doubt about how you're being treated. Also there were no missing pieces. There were 4 bolts that for the cooling fan and they were in the cup holder like you were told. A mechanic doesn't unnecessarily replace an engine and lie about performing tests they could not possibly have done. If that makes your guys experts you need to look up the definition of "expert." Also the cooling fans were immediately brought to you so you can keep your crap about missing parts. read more

Wow, really fast. I went in only for an oil change and the receptionist brought out about 15 min later my air filter and showed me how gross it was. there was black gunk everywhere with leaves. She said it was one of the worst ones she's ever seen. Only twenty bucks more to get a new one in there so I added it to the bill :) very impressed so far. read more

This is a family run business. You will often find Hurmbeto and his son Mark I the shop. They are honest and fair. They listen to the issue you are having and will then bring you I to the shop to show what they are going to fix. They will give you a ride if your car needs to stay a little longer. They also organized a food and clothing drive when hurricane sandy hit. These are generous caring people in this business. read more

Expect to walk in and be treated like family. They have continued to earn our business over several years now, and when there is the need for service Melissa somehow finds a way to get us in, and most often on the same or the following day. Between car dealerships, repair shops and "courtesy garages" at some gas stations I probably pass 25 of them on my way home from Providence and I will continue to pass right by them. I have purchased 2 cars and maintain all 3 of our cars here. In my experience, they do not up-sell and there are no gimmicks, and no one in the building is afraid to give you their word and stand by it with plenty of expertise to go around. No one likes the expense of maintaining vehicles, but I constantly feel like this is is a true find - where they do the right things the right way - where the real win is when a customer, whether as a car buyer or for repairs, decides to come back again. I am making these comments with the thought after your first trip here, for which ever reason, you'll keep coming back too. The owner's handshake here means something, and in an industry in which it can be nearly impossible to find a mechanic or auto dealership to trust, in my experience this is absolutely one place where that kind of trust, for me, was there from day one. read more

My wife and I have had some bad luck with finding a trustworthy mechanic in recent years and Marx was no exception. I had a pretty nasty oil leak in my Jeep and brought it in to get it diagnosed and repaired. Turns out all it needed was some new valve cover gaskets. When the work was complete, I got a call from the shop asking me if I had had any problems with my heat prior to that, which I didn't. They said they were going to keep it there for another hour or so to let it run. After about an hour, I got another call in which i was told "all set." When I picked it up, I no longer had heat coming from the driver's side vents. When I called them back, they told me that they had disconnected the heater hoses to gain access to the valve cover gaskets, and in the same breath, said that the problem had nothing to do with them. They told me they were more than willing to take a look at the problem, but I would be charged accordingly should I choose to have the work done. I don't think it's asking too much to expect a professional mechanic to fix any new problem on their own dime that did not exist before it was brought in. In addition to that, my wife's Dodge was previously experiencing some sort of electrical problem which was subsequently misdiagnosed as a bad alternator. We agreed to have it replaced, only to have it short out multiple times in the following days. We have since gotten it correctly diagnosed and repaired...it was some damage to the battery cable wires due to a loose connection creating sparks and melting away the fitting. Last but not least, the final straw was when we were given "free" brake pads for the Dodge only to experience some disturbing grinding noise about 2 weeks later. When we had it looked at by a trusted friend, the pad had actually been installed so poorly that it was hanging off and causing damage to the rotor. I have no doubt that the free brake pads were simply the carrot to earn enough trust to get it back in for a more expensive repair in the near future. Needless to say, we will not be bringing our vehicles back to Marx..EVER...and I suggest you do the same. read more
