My daughter is 4 and half and this was our first dentist visit. She has Rett syndrome, none verbal and unable to follow direction. I was understandably nervous about the dentist. Their office staff is so kind, the front desk ladies are great on the phone, fast with insurance, they worked SO well with my daughter. she was able to get X-rays and a fluoride treatment without sedation or any difficulty or tears at all. I have been going here for 14 years with both of my children. My daughter had a cleft palate repair and Mary has always been wonderful with my daughter always making my daughter feel comfortable. My son is on the spectrum and she has always been very patient, gentle and kind with him, and he isn't the easiest when it comes to DR. Visits or Dentist visits but once she comes in the room she makes it goes so smoothly. Before putting silver in kids mouth think about it. It causes too many problems. Dr. O'Connor didn't even consult with me before putting the silver in my special needs daughter mouth. Then when she was having severe swelling in her face due to the silver crown she would not even take the time to see her. Fortunately we did find a wonderful dentist in our area and had to pay out of pocket. She had to have 3 teeth removed due to the silver crown. In the future Dr. O'Connor, I recommend you consult with the parents before putting silver crowns in a anybody's mouth. Unfortunately I was not given that respect. read more

Dr. Mary is AWESOME! We saw her Ad on the St.Didacus weekly bulletin. A little bit about us, we fell into a challenging situation at my employment and I lost my dental PPO insurance. We used to go to a different Dentist who refused to take us in because now we fell in the hands of MEDI-CAL. As if thats a bad thing? But during this time of my need Dr. Mary answered the phone one day and took us in. I had to go through her assistants and they scheduled my daughter in without much hesitation because Dr. Mary approved! Beware. They messed up my son's tooth and now he needs a root canal. My son had a cavity that they filled and the filling fell out. They then drilled out a larger hole filled it again and guess what, the filling fell out. Went back again, they drilled it, filled it and the filling fell out. We took him to an adult dentist and he was livid. Said he had never had a filling fall out and had never seen a dentist need to drill out so much tooth to fill it. Same reaction from the endodontist. Lots of good dentists in SD but this is not one. read more

15 years ago two of my siblings went to Dr.Mary regularly. The staff are all nice and VERY patient. Dr.Mary is very knowledgeable and quick. So when I wanted to take my three year old to his first dentist we went to Dr.Mary O'Connor. My son got his teeth cleaned, x-rayed and sealed in 30 minutes. The wait in the waiting room is never that long, either. Besides, there is a video game machine, books and lots of toys. I don't know why someone complained about Dr.Mary using swear words, she would never do that. The reason they don't allow parents in after the first visit is because children listen to authoritative figures who aren't their parents better than their parents. (Case in point, my son doesn't let me brush his teeth without a fuss, but when the dental assistant told him to get in the chair and she started to clean his teeth he did what he was told and just sat there, hands on tummy, letting her work. ***I want to point out that initial visits to O'Connor were typical dental visits and boys play the video games etc. Nonetheless, our total experience is very real and not a single thing I say is "misinformation " as O'Connor response says. ****This review is an update of my experience with O'Connor and my son that happened a year ago. UNBELIEVABLY, while my son was admitted to Children's Rady's with antibiotics and awaiting a surgical extraction under anesthesia because it was too unsafe and too inhumane to do in an office, who do you think shows up as the attending dentist? O'Connor! I only found this out when the nurse spoke with me and told me what O'Connor said. *****She said "O',Connor wanted me to ask you if I'm ok for her to work on your son" . I was shocked! First of all shocked that she had access to perform extraction under anesthesia in a hospital setting, secondly that out of all pediatric dentist in SD, she is the one to show up. I was absolutely stunned. Of course I said "NO, never will I trust her.. what she did to my son in front of me, I cannot imagine what she will do while my son is asleep and no one to protect him from her choices" O'Connor had her chance to do this procedure when I ASKED a FEW times about having my son put to sleep and extractions done in a hospital BEFORE torturing my son two times. ( see first review) In fact one of the teeth to be extracted in the hospital was one she planned to extract in her office. This is the visit where she THREW THE METAL TOOLS ON THE METAL TRAY after violently yanking my poor sons tooth out! She never even gave me direction, a follow up, or write an antibiotic script to control infection. She never even gave a referral to another dentist that will tKe our insurance. We left traumatized. What is concerning is seeing how my intuition, a basic mom, proved to be spot on. In fact the doctor who admitted my boy said "you were so smart to protect him from an office extraction and amazing you knew better to come here.. The infection is very close to his brain and he is at risk" So they admitted him and immediately administered strong antibiotics via IV. The surgery was a day or two later. Complete opposite care of that which O'Connor offered. She failed to recognize the risk and vulnerability my son had and she even failed basic knowledge that the infection NEEDS to be addressed BEFORE yanking teeth out in her office. Sorry, the truth needs to be revealed. Im sure if it was only my other son as a patient with perfect results each time, I would not be writing this. But look at the reviews, scroll down, and you will see how many other children and families had frightening experiences. No, its not just me and my son. Its many others. The fact that O'Connor asked the nurse to see if its ok to perform extraction while under anesthesia says a lot. Its says O'Connor felt GUILTY and very aware how she wronged my son who was one of her patients. I would not take the time to write a negative review if I did not think it was important. Im not happy to do so nor do i feel the need to rant. Others need to know the truth. This all really happened and it could be more kids. Maybe she is on her best behavior after my posting, but she obviously was not beforehand because others posted traumatizing experiences well before I had. One more thing, O'Connor replied to my former review and mentioned policies and my display of anxiety. Never did I interfere with procedure . I rubbed my sons leg and spoke gently and only asked "is it out soon?" And "should we ho to the hospital?" Very quietly I asked it so my son would not worry. It was O'Connor who did not control her own self, angry , impatient, and worse, dismissive of my sons pain and acute dental disposition and obvious risk. My anxiety, under wraps, was a guide for me to know something is very wrong and my son is at risk. Nothing we did was deserving of such terrible and dangerous treatment. It was not even close to standard of care for any dentist. Like I said previously, shame on you, especially to blame a parent for your inhumane unprofessional and risky treatment of a child. But at least your not blaming my child this time as you did in your office. Hopefully I wont have to write again and only see O'Connor in passing at the grocery store. read more

I have been taking my almost six years old boy here since he was one year old, I actually liked the dentist and her staff, and I am writing this not so good review specifically because of the assistant that took care of my son in our last visit. My son has been always afraid of the dentist but he always collaborated well. This last visit started with the X-rays, I have being working as a dental assistant for the last ten months and have personally taken X-rays in children as young as four years old. The way this assistant handle the situation with my son was not appropriate. The way she forcibly tried to close my son's mouth with the big sensor that she was using was just not right. She did it several times until I could not watch anymore, another lady that worked there and was close by told me that that was the only size they had, and I told her that they should have one for kids that is smaller, anyways, my son was in pain and in tears, they were able to take 3 x-rays and after several attempts to take the 4th one I told them to stop, and I was actually about to leave the place. but I decided to finished the appointment since he already went through the hard part. The cleaning was suppose to be easy, and my son is a talker, he likes asking all kind of questions and usually the staff would handle him pretty well, but of course he was already traumatized, the assistant simply did not have the patience to deal with him or try to calm him down showing him or answering a few questions, he was laying down and when he was going to get a rinse he fell the water was going through his throat faster than it was being suctioned and he would ended up seating and very scared and trying to tell her, and I could tell the assistant simply did not have anymore patience, I personally had this situation with patients when performing polishing , and some people just rather raise the head when rinsing, this is not common but it happens. Anyways, she did not care and just kept on going, till finally ended up cleaning him up just with gauze. I think she was just annoyed because this was not an easy patient, I mean if you work with kids you know they like to know what are you going to do, what are you going to use, they like you to show them not just tell them, this helped him a lot before and we did not have any problems, but this time was just awful, when we went to the car and started driving, he started crying again and I told him he did good, but he kept saying he did not, he was very upset again , and I told him it was not his fault. I like Dr. O'Connor, but I will be taking my son to a place where they have the appropriate size of sensors for kids, because I know now that they exist, and it should not be that hard for a kid to have an X-ray taken, maybe the assistant had a rough day or was tired, but that should not affect how she treats kids. read more

Totally turned off. I was one of the earlier reviewers of Dr. O'connor - at a time when she had poor ratings on yelp. She was considered militant and unpleasant. My review at the time had been glowing, heartfelt and sincere - but it was also relevant to that particular point in time, and our very specific and peculiar situation: our daughter needed very extensive dental work done, at age 2, and under general anaesthesia! This was in 2009. As the years went by, we noticed that the maintenance procedures for the original work done were frequent, quick and swift, but also very shoddy. My daughters fillings were always falling out. All the time. We would go back, spend a few quick seconds with Dr. Mary and with a couple of days the fillings would be out again, and the cycle continued. I initially chalked this up to my older daughter's particularly challenging dental work, and gave this practice the benefit of the doubt. However, with the second one going in for her first dental treatment and that filling falling out within a couple of days, I started reviewing our experience and paying attention to the quality of the work. My older daughter, sadly, now has two abscesses in her gums under her teeth that were capped by Dr. Mary, leading me to wonder if the clean up job of the decay below the cap was not done properly to cause this chronic infection. Add to this, the front office staff is OBNOXIOUS and RUDE and RACIST. I am Indian, and snide comments were first made about Hispanics (because the older lady at the front desk assumed that that is what I must have been), and then quickly turned into disparaging comments about India. Unfortunately for this practice, my suspicion is, that it is like a gaggle of older women that sit around and gossip. There is a level of arrogance in the way that the front office staff behaves, that in our opinion, can only come from permission and/or encouragement from the boss. Overall unwarranted unpleasantness from the front office staff (the two ladies that are always there) and quick and sub-quality dental work is what finally turned the tide for us. That said, there is a wonderful, wonderful hygienist in that office. We will miss her and I wish her the very best for maintaining a spot of light in that otherwise awful place. Terrible experience!!!! The only reason to bring your kids here is if you want them to have a lifetime fear of the dentist. My son was getting his first set of X-rays ( they also didn't ask me and whisked away my 4 year old while I filled out forms and looked after my 2 year old and I assumed he was starting his cleaning). Upon finding him I say he saw getting x-rays and was doing well but starting to get wiggly. One set was hard to get and he started to cry, the staff then started to hold him down. The next moment A gruff lady was in the room yelling at my child to sit down and he was terrified in tears. I was shocked to look at the name tag and find it was the dentist herself!!! I informed her the visit was over and we would no longer be patients and she then yelled at me. This person obviously has no idea how to gently redirect children to make the comfortable. I had taken my son at one there and remember him crying and being held and as a new mom assumed that was how it had to be. Now I know better!!!!! She should not be allowed near children let alone to treat them. Very upsetting. My son cried for 15 minutes in my arms in her parking lot and he isn't a crier. read more

We discovered Doctor O'Connor on Yelp as a result of no longer being happy with the current dentist. We are always promptly helped and acknowledged when we come to the office. I have three kids ages 5,7, and 9 and we are able to schedule everyone's cleanings on the same day! The kids like coming here, so that is a huge plus! They all get a bag of goodies which include: toothbrush, floss, tooth paste, and toys! Our previous dentist seemed to be drilling on my kids teeth to much and he lost my trust. I've been taking my daughter to Dr. Mary since her first dental appointment at age 2. Dr. Mary and her staff have a wonderful gift with children...the children listen to the staff and do as they are told. At the first appointment I was allowed to go with my daughter for her cleaning and xrays, but was told that at subsequent appointments I would be asked to wait in the waiting room. I was nervous about that, but it has worked out spendidly. My daughter listens to the doctor and nurses, and is happy as a clam when she leaves. My husband and I brought our 2 year old here yesterday for her 1st dental exam. We felt at ease as soon as we stepped into the office. The dental assistant that cleaned my daughter's teeth was very friendly and gave my little one clear and simple directions, which were followed! The entire staff was very good with kids of all ages, didn't hear an single crying child or tantrum the entire time we were there. Dr. Mary was excellent also, I am so glad I found this office. I was nervous about taking my kids to a new dentist in the San Diego area as they do not enjoy having their teeth worked on. I was referred to Dr. O'Connor's office through my insurance company and was impressed from the first phone call. The receptionist was very nice and helpful and they sent out a packet by mail for new patients to fill out before their initial visit. I thought this was very useful because sitting in a waiting room filling out paperwork with two kids is not fun! The entire office was comfortable, there are lots of toys for the kids to play with and the staff was amazing! You can tell that Dr. O'Connor is passionate about her job and loves children. My daughter's cavity filling was fast and convenient. They even gave my son a prize for waiting for his sister's appointment! I thought a smaller practice was going to be a more pleasant experience... the waiting room is small but nice. Parents will love the PacMan machine and kids have plenty of toys to keep them entertained. The staff wasn't as kid friendly as I'd hoped. Pleasant, yes, but I don't feel like my daughter warmed up to them very well. She did enjoy the small prize at the end, however. My biggest complaint is that the facial veneer they placed fell off after about a week. She went in a second time and that one fell off the next day! My next complaint, which is somewhat understandable, is that they book so far out in advanced for afternoon appointments. All they had available was morning appointments and my daughter had to miss school a couple times. We won't be going back; it's incredibly inconvenient. read more

If I could I would give this practice no stars!!! Very disgusted with the entire team at this practice, especially Dr. O'Connor. My special needs brother had been a patient of Dr. O'Connor for 19 years, he is currently 20 years old. Last year we realized his wisdom teeth were coming in after he hadn't been eating and complaining about pain. We called to request an appointment with Dr. O'Connor for a consult on his wisdom teeth and we were told that their was no way his wisdom teeth were coming in that we could discard that as being the possibility he was having pain or wasn't eating, she diagnosed without a visual or x-ray consult. We took my brother to another dental office for a consult and x-ray to re-assure his wisdom teeth weren't coming in. The other dental office confirmed that his wisdom teeth were impacted and pushing on to his front molars which indeed was causing the pain and affecting his eating habits, we were told he needed surgery for the removal of all 4 wisdom teeth. After the consult with the other dental office which did not take his insurance we called Dr. O'Connor office and demanded to have a consult with her about my brothers wisdom teeth and informed them we had our own x-rays. They agreed to schedule an appointment for a consult within a week. Once at the appointment Dr. O'Connor seems a bit frustrated for the fact that we had gone to a different dental office for a second opinion. The doctor looked at the x-rays we had brought in and once again said that he didn't need his wisdom teeth extracted. We mentioned to her that we would like to get a referral for consultation from an oral surgeon and she immediately responded they had no oral surgeons they worked with directly that we had to look on our own for an oral surgeon that was willing to see him because of this special needs and that also took his dental insurance. After a month of looking all over the county for an oral surgeon that was willing to see my brother because of his special needs and that also took his dental insurance we found one in South Bay. Within that month we were contacted by Dr. O'Connor office about confirmation of a dental hygiene appointment, we requested that the appointment be cancelled because we didn't think it was a good idea that he have his teeth cleaned when he was still having pain from the wisdom teeth. They went ahead and confirmed the appointment cancellation and we were asked to contact the office about scheduling his next appointment once he had had his wisdom teeth extracted. Shortly after this incident we contacted Dr. O'Connor office about requesting a referral from them to be able to be seen by the oral surgeon and we were told they would not release a referral form unless we scheduled his next dental cleaning appointment. We mentioned we were unsure when he would have his surgery for the wisdom teeth removal so we rather no schedule anything, they re-assured they would not give a referral for the specialist, at that point we decided to schedule an appointment for his dental cleaning but we mentioned to them it was only a tentative appointment because everything depended on when he would have his surgery. Between the consultation with the oral surgeon , waiting on approval for the oral surgery to be performed at a local hospital 5 months went by until we had a surgery date scheduled for April 2016. Once again Dr. O'Connor office called to confirm his dental cleaning appointment a couple weeks before his surgery and we again proceeded with canceling the appointment for the same reason as before, we wanted to wait until after he was fully healed from his upcoming surgery. And again Dr. O'Connor office cancelled the appointment and asked us to call once we were ready to schedule his dental cleaning appointment. On June 28th we contacted Dr. O'Connor office about scheduling an appointment for my brothers dental cleaning and we were informed by the front office staff that Dr. O'Connor no longer wished to see him as a patient because he had missed 2 dental cleaning appointments. They did not give us the opportunity to proof he had a long recovery from his extractions because of complications that had occurred while he was in surgery at the hospital. After 19 years of being a patient at Dr. O'Connor's practice and not ever missing a dental appointment we feel we were treated unfairly and were unlawfully treated. read more

I took my son here a couple years ago and I would not recommend her. She strapped my 4 year old to get teeth extracted, caps and cleaning. He's 7 1/2 and he is still traumatized from this experience. He doesn't like going to the dentist. Even cleaning is hard to do. It's going to be a long struggle but I'm hoping this bad event will pass. read more

This doctor is the reason that I have so much anxiety going to a dental office at 37. I saw her as a 13 year old on Medi-Cal and while getting fillings done I would often complain about the pain. Rather than giving me additional medication to numb the area I was told it would be "just a few more seconds." That seemed like an eternity! My only reasoning that the additional meds weren't administered was cost associated with dealing with the state. Years after the family and I were having a conversation about dentists and my other siblings piped up about the horror stories they had with this "doctor" and the trauma inflicted upon us all. My mom was pretty mortified that we all had similar experiences. I guess when you lure poor kids in with arcade games in the front you can get away with torture and trauma in the back. For the record, my mouth still has a hard time getting numb, even with far superior dentists. Sad to see that after 24 years that not much has changed. Dr Mary has always been pretty great and my 11 year old is autistic so I needed carrying people... We went to another dentist and I didn't like them, it was the super dentist, east lake, so we went back to Dr Mary...things were fine. My daughter had a permanent front tooth come completely out of her head last memorial day, two days before she was supposed to start braces. I called the new dentist but Dr Mary called back first. She was a little annoyed with my daughter, but I didn't think much of it because I was there to comfort her. Anyway, she did a route canal under anesthesia, the tooth came or great and w went back about 6 months later for regular check ups...my daughter was doing amazing with the hygienist, I was with my 2 year old and trying to stay back because she tends to get whiny when I'm in the room...She had her hands down, was fairly relaxed and when she came to me, the broad had twisted one of the brackets on get tooth and didn't even tell me! I know that hurt and after such progress for my daughter, we went back 10 steps...we have an appt today with another new dentist that another Yelper told me about, fingers crossed it'll go well! read more

Initially went to Dr Poiset for my 4 year old dental check up. She needed filling from both sides of her mouth and the dentist required that she would give her some liquid drink before the treatment. The dentist refused to do the treat without that. I then found Dr. O'Conner and came to her for a second opinion. She stated that she doesn't use any gas or liquids to sedate the children and uses local anesthetic (shot). From the first visit it was an amazing experience. Friendly and fast! Not only did they get my toddler in and out of the chair ASAP (priceless to any toddler mom) they spoiled her with toys to entertain her in the wait room, more toys to distract her in the cleaning room and even gave her a toy at parting. Dr. Oconner is amazing. Office is appropriate and ethical. Other Doctors (Dr. Adams) gauged us charging us over $1000 for in office sedation that of course is not covered by insurance. Dr. OConner did the same work as the other dentist but with local anesthetics, in and out in less than 15 minutes for root canal and crown. A breath of fresh air! After a terrible experience at another dentist, we were so relieved to find Mary O'Conner. The other place quoted us at $800 to get one cavity fixed for my four year old daughter and they wanted to do an IV sedation. At Mary's office, it cost only $100 and there was not sedation needed! Dr. O'conner is such a caring dentist she met all of my sons needs her staff always welcomes us by name, they ask Mason questions from the last time about how school is how soccer is, personal stuff etc. They are always so professional and they always make me feel comfortable about sending my son back by himself!! read more

We have been coming here for the last four years. Both of my children started their first visit here when they turned one year and go twice a year. I have found the staff to be very friendly. They have always allowed me to be with my children at all times with the exception of X-rays, makes sense. My kids like going there because of all the toys and prize at the end of their appointment.
