Just plain great doctor. I was experiening pain in my lower groin area and thought I was having a serious infection of the bladder or fallopian tube and got in to see her the next day. She did an exam and review of my medications and diagnosed the problem in a few minutes. Due to medications that I recently started taking she realized that these medications could cause the bowel to slow down and result in hard to pass stools. The pain that I was experiencing was due to straining to pass stools. She recommended drinking more fluids, changing the diet etc., The pain subsided from excruciating to barely noticeable within a few days. Thank You Dr. O'Neil. read more

I appreciated the straightforward, yet kind manner that Dr asked me about my past medical history. She also was knowledgeable and answered all my concerns. Pregnancy is a very special and beautiful journey or at least it should be. I came here for my first appt and walked out feeling the exact opposite. I wasn't walked through anything that was going on, Dr. O'Niell laughed at me when I wasn't able to answer a question to the best of my knowledge about my birth control, I had an ultrasound done vaginally without any part of the process being broken down or explained. I was told not to get excited because of a positive pregnancy test being that miscarriages are very high. Why wouldn't I get excited? Miscarriages are just as common as healthy pregnancies. She made my first visit feel very scary, she does not show a soft or caring demeanor by any means. I would not recommend if you are looking for a sweet and gentle experience. read more

I came by for my annual check up. Of course Dr. O'Neill was there. She is a wonderful obgyn and I am so grateful to have her as my doctor.

Dr Mary-Margaret O'Neill was a butcher and an antisocial monster. She left me with a hideous c-section scar and never once in the length of my pregnancy looked me in the face. When she finally delivered my son in April 2006, she was pushy & rude with a terrible bedside manner. She left my husband & I in shock with her behavior. Avoid her if you can. Her midwives were wonderful, though that was the only reason I stayed. But learned my lesson. I had my second child with a much better Ob. In this day and age, in a developed country, with so many well-rounded Ob Gyn providers available, there is no reason - NONE - to tolerate a doctor like Mary-Margaret O'Neill. After all, if your doctor has crappy surgical skill AND crappy social & communication skills the likelihood of a good treatment experience are severely reduced. Real date of this review: 3/11/12 I dont think so. First off, you pull up, to a HOUSE. No dr.s office sign just a backdoor that reads entrance and a sign on the window that says 'dogs on premises'..okay.. I walked in and the place wreaked like dogs, ew. Dont exactly wanna have my lady parts examined in a place that smelt like a vet! But, i made the appt, i love dogs, maybe the house atmosphere could be cozier than a cold dr.s office.... I went with it. Nurse was cold, so was reception, def not a friendly vibe in the air meanwhile im still sitting in someones house? I get put in the room, speak to a nurse, dress from waste down and wait for what seems like a half hour for someone to come in, mind you the place wasnt even busy. A woman comes in, not the obgyn or the nurse, but a midwife. She goes over a couple things, seems nicer than the others, and proceeds to give me an ultrasound. During this, she informs me shes not an expert at it and isnt really sure what shes seeing??(im very early in my pregnancy) thats comforting. We discuss how im going to have to go somewhere else now for blood work and that was that. Dr. O'neil neglected to even come in to shake hands with me!!!! Mind you, i am in my first pregnancy, im worried, little scared, looking for the right doctor to follow me through with caring for my baby until the big day, and she didnt even bother meeting me! I walked out to reception, if you want to call it that? And O'neil is just standing there looking over papers, milling around, doesnt even look up to make eye contact or introduce herself when im RIGHT THERE. And i get scheduled for my next appointment. Which i am surely NOT going to. I considered giving them a second chance which is crazy, you know maybe it was just an off day there, but no. I call today to get my hgc results they told me theyd call me about today, reception put me on hold three times, then rudely asked what my name and number is and shed leave a message for me?? Havent heard back since. Unbelievable. I am def going somewhere else. And btw, look her up on the CA Medical Board site, she got her license yanked in new york in 09! Over "medical conduct' hm, thats nice... That was just a cherry on top. What a waste of my time. WORSE then the movie knocked up! Before you read on, I want it to be know that I am in the health care professional who works at a local hospital. I only interacted with this MD once when I went with my wife to an appointment. This is some updated feedback. After thinking about this MD and hearing other horror stories I would tell anyone thinking of using this MD as your provider to re-think. There are so many compassionate, intelligent, and knowledgeable MDs out. Trust me...don't put medical care of a love one in this woman's hands. Those other people who have had experiences with this MD should seriously think about contact the state board and file a formal complaint. I am so thankful that my wife found care from a truely amazing OB. Has anyone see the movie, "knocked up"? That scene when they meet the MD for the first time and Seth Rogans character has to talk to the MD outside privately? I only thought those types of cold incompassionate doctors only existed in hollywood movies, but Dr O'neil comes pretty close (I actually wanted to ask her to step outside halfway through our visit and give her a piece of my mind). I understand that she is a very knowledgable MD and has a lot of experience, but typically you want your OB, the person who is going to guide you through the ups and downs of childbirth to have good bedside manner. I would not recommend this MD to a patient who wants to use her as the MD who is going to help deliver her baby. Maybe for women past the child bearing age who need a OB/GYN to help them through menopause or HRT she would be a good choice. But I just dont understand what the patients who have used her to deliver their first baby and think she is a kind and warm MD. I am so thankful that my wife and I switched to another MD to help us through her pregnancy. Besides not being warm and compassionate, she really didnt answer any of our questions and I remember leaving her office confused and not quite understanding what had just happened. After talking to our current OB, i feel like she didnt run enough tests. Overall I would say that O'neil may be a good MD but as far as bedside manner and personality she scores only 1 star. read more

I have been a patient of Dr. O'Neill's for about 11 years now and I am very satisfied with the care that I receive each time I show up there. Dr. O'Neill is very knowledgeable and thorough. She is very kind and cares very much about her patient's care. I would highly recommend Dr. O'Neill. Her staff is also very friendly. There were two times when I needed an urgent appointment they were able to see me the same day. *I was pregnant with my son at 16-years-old (He is now 10-years-old) and this was the first time that I met Dr. O'Neill. I've been using Dr. O'Neill for several years now, but only recently had a baby, so the number of visits went way up. I really like Dr. O'Neill - her practice as a whole was very supportive of the type of birth I wanted to have and I like that she uses midwives. I saw midwives for most of my prenatal appointments, and one of the midwives (Kavita) ended up delivering my baby (Kavita was great, by the way!). At one point during my pregnancy, I had some concern because I felt a lack of fetal movement and called the after-hours number on a Saturday. I got called back RIGHT AWAY and they sent me into the hospital for a NST and continued to follow up with me while I was at the hospital for testing. In summary, I found that if you have an issue or needed attention, they are very responsive and proactive. If all is going fine, they let mother nature do it's work and aren't overly invasive (which I like). Also, worth noting - my appointments were usually in the afternoon and I rarely waited more than 5 minutes or so after my appointment time to be seen... any woman knows that is quite remarkable for an OB/GYN office!! read more

If I could give ZERO stars then I would! This doctor belongs in the mental hospital and nowhere else! I am still so offended and hurt by the way I was treated. It went something like this: I got there and my presence was not acknowledged at all. I thought, ok the receptionist is on the phone so this just is how she works. I sat down and got called into a room in this house that they rented and turned into a medical office. VERY makeshift. I also thought, well, at least I do not have to have the baby on the highway (because my doctor is in Santa Cruz and I did nearly have my last baby in the car...oh how I wish I could live in Santa Cruz so I could go so Margann Mentor and Dr. Doherty still....oh well!) So I sat in the exam room and waited for the doctor. Note that I had never met this doctor before. She came in and said "Dr. O Neill, do you have any questions?" No "how are you today? or maybe nice to meet you..." Then she asked me or I should say interrogated me about my exercise habits "are you exercising? I said Yes. She says "what are you doing" I say "walking" She says "every day?" I say "yes" (I wanted to say " no usually I use my wheelchair I got because I am too lazy to walk, but refrained...) Next thing on the agenda was my weight gain....my pre pregnancy weight is 132 and I am 5,9 tall. I gained 20 pounds so far and am 30 weeks pregnant. So the doctor tells me "your weight gain should slow down by now. We have two holidays coming up, I hope you survive those." I asked her if I gained too much and she replies "no" SO then I was just beyond confused and just offended and sad about this disrespectful behavior. So now she starts to talk about the glucose blood test that I took which Kay had instructed me not to fast for. But the doctor now wants to know what I ate that day (I think - is this a trick?) whether I fasted or not. I said I don't know and that she did not instruct me to so of course I would not be sure. Who should be sure?? Probably the doctor in this case. Not so much! She said "your blood sugar is too high for fasting (assuming I fasted when I told her I was not sure because she instructed me not to fast) so then you will take the glucose test. I said "no" Then she said "well, then we are going to treat you like a diabetic." At that point I completely abandoned all respect I had tried to muster up for this doctor until then. I told her I could possibly take the blood test again and she might want to instruct me to fast that time. I left the office, picked up my records the next day and will NEVER ever set foot in that unprofessional office again!! In the car I realized she had told me I was anemic, but did not offer me advice on what to do about it - I was too disoriented to even ask her...they also do not take a urine sample which I think is completely unprofessional! Too bad I am completely without any doctor or place to give birth and at 30 weeks no one else has said they would take me...not sure...I might try to go to SAnta Cruz and have my baby on the freeway/in the car or just show up at el camino hospital los gatos and hope for the best...I am terrified but was even more terrified at the prospect of having to deal with this lunatic of a doctor. If it wasn't for the midwives and new Dr. in this practice, I probably would not be going in to this office. As stated by the previous reviewers, Dr. O'Neil doesn't have the best bedside manner. She's very direct and to the point and not very friendly. But I do have to admit that she is a good doctor in terms of the care that her practice provides. They do have a new Dr. there now and she is VERY friendly! I'd make it a point to see her instead of Dr. O'Neil. The one person that I do dislike in this practice is the receptionist. She's very rude and if you make an appointment to see one of the doctors, she acts like it's the most inconvinient thing in the world for her. Early last month, I suffered a miscarriage after I was almost 3 months along.. I called the office and said "I went to the ER last night and they confirmed that I miscarried. They said I need to see the doctor for follow up." She gave a huge sigh and acted as if it was such a bother for her to get me an appt. Hello, please be a little more considerate to someone that's just suffered a loss! The reason I keep coming back though is that with so many people that you can see (3 midwives and 2 doctors), you really don't have to wait much if you have an appointment. read more

I started at the practice when there was another OB-Gyn and stayed after she left because of my initial positive feelings about the practice. My experiences with Kavita Noble, one of the midwives on staff, were always very positive, but after a couple of negative experiences with Dr. O'Neill, a billing error that I'm still dealing with years later, and a bunch of prohibitive red tape from within the practice regarding getting an IUD, I left the practice and switched all of my care over to Stanford. Kavita is just wonderful, and I'd happily give her five stars. If you're looking for a great certified nurse midwife and are willing to deal with a little bit of bureaucracy from Dr. O'Neill's practice, I highly, highly recommend her. When it comes to Dr. O'Neill herself, I was willing to get past the brusqueness since I tend to like the no-nonsense types and want someone skilled (which she certainly is), but I wasn't willing to overlook her shrugging off some of my questions and, in one case, giving me blatant, outdated misinformation as a scare tactic to get me to agree to a course of treatment I had doubts about. I truly believe that she did it thinking it was for the best, but it made me uncomfortable continuing to use her practice. I think some of these bad reviews come down to personality conflict, though, and I certainly believe some women could have a positive experience with her as long as they see eye-to-eye. read more

I'm super happy that, when I got pregnant, my family doctor recommended me Dr O'Neill office. I had most of my prenatal appointment with the midwives but I saw Dr. O'Neill once every trimester, she is not as sweet as the Kavita and Kay (the midwives), but she always took the time to answer to my questions and I found her advices useful and very professional. I wanted a natural birth, so I was planning on delivering my baby with one of the midwives (that btw are just fantastic); well I ended up with a C-section... Dr O'Neill was great and the surgery went super smoothly; the next day I was already totally fine and now, 2 months later, my scar is not bad at all. For my next child I hope to be able to avoid another c-section; but in either cases I'll go back to Dr O'Neill office, confident that it'll be another really nice experience read more

Dr. O'Neill is an amazing doctor, and I cannot say enough about her knowledge and expertise in the field. After my wife was in labor for 20+ hours and nearly reaching the point of a C-section, Dr. O'Neill came in after being called and worked her magic to help us deliver our baby instantly and safely. It was amazing to see her work having been right in front of her. She knows the medical side of birth and can confidently execute in high pressure situations. She's exactly what you want in your delivery doctor when things get tense. The midwives that we've dealt with (Kavita and Kay) are extremely friendly and informative. I wish I could give a "zero" star rating. The best I could begin with, is by suggesting you look for a different OB/GYN. I was referred to her to treat a cancerous condition. The screening and treatment for this consisted of multiple biopsies, colposcopies, surgery, and an immuno/oncology medication. This was difficult on me psychologically and physically. She offered no empathy or comfort. Later on, I found out from another specialist in the field (whom I LOVE as my ob/gyn/oncologist), that she was "overtreating" me, to the extent that I was being unnecessarily brutalized and undergoing unneeded suffering. Here are some specific examples: 1. During a colposcopy, she applied an acidic solution to my genital area with a spray bottle (I found out later that the standard of application is with a large cotton swab, to specific area). This caused burning and a skin reaction so painful that I shouted out in pain and couldn't walk right for two days. The spray bottle just shot this acidic solution EVERYWHERE. I underwent this nightmare with her multiple times. I thought it was just something I had to deal with. 2. She biopsied many places in my genital area (inside and out). While I was given shots of lidocaine before (needles in all the worst places), she gave me no other pain medication before or after, and no healing ointment prescriptions. This absolutely required additional pain medication, as there was intense swelling and horrible pain for many days following these procedures. I would have to call in sick to work for two days afterwards, because I was in so much pain to move. Urinating was awful. I also underwent these procedures several times. I found out later from my current specialist (as he reviewed my chart from Dr. O'Niell) that she should not have been cutting me up like this. He looked very upset when he was reviewing this, and said out loud "why did she do this so many times??". He tried to correct himself and maintain professionalism, but I could see his distress. This finally helped me realized that what I had gone through was unnecessary and wrong. 3. She would barely make eye-contact. I would have to shout questions at her as she had one foot out the door if I wanted to get anything answered (she wouldn't ask if I had questions, nor would she take her time with me). When I found out that my cancer cells were aggressive and that I'd need surgery, we scheduled a date and she was in a hurry to get out the door. She actually looked back at me when I asked a question, and she saw I was about to cry and asked for the first time "are you okay?" and I responded that I was sad and scared, to which she replied--in the doorway, with the door open, mind you--"you'll be okay. Probably." And then she left and closed the door behind her. No joke. I couldn't believe it. 4. Before my surgery, I had a lovely nurse that waited by my side as they prepared me for the procedure. There was some interaction that the nurse had with Dr. O'Niell, and then the nurse observed an interaction with me, and when Dr. O'Niell left, the nurse asked "Is she always like this?" I said yes, and the nurse looked at me with great pity. Today I still suffer tearing of the many scared regions of my labia. I could probably sue her for malpractice. I am so happy with my current specialist. I recommend every other woman look somewhere else. You can get better care. read more

You will either hate her or love her. In my case, I love Dr.O'neill. I had a great experience with my first baby with Dr.O'neill and her midwives. If you are a diligent patient, you will experience Dr.O'neill to be very helpful. For example, my husband and I had so many questions and we always made a list before we went to see her. I was very satisfied with her answers/information which helped me to plan better with my first labor. She was also happy to see that we came prepared. If you expect Dr.O'neill to feed you information without asking any questions, you'd better find someone else. With our current health care system, Doctors are super busy and bumbarded with paperworks. As a patient, we need be educated to best utilize our time with doctors...that's just my personal belief... Her midwives are great! I met Kavita for most of my visits, and had Kay for actual delivery, and she was awesome! Stayed at the hospital most of the time with me and took care of all the paperworks at Good Sam. My delivery was induced three weeks early, and my labor was 22 hrs which 4 hrs of it was purely pushing...She and Dr.O'neill were a great team and I got my vaginal delivery that I've been wanted with their help! I'll never forget when Dr.O'neill said, 'Esther, after this push, you will meet your baby...so let's go!'...and guess what...she made it happen and I met my baby allison. My husband hugged Dr.O'neill after she was done. I highly recommend Dr.O'neill and her staff especially if your goal is vaginal birth. I had a swift recovery. read more

My wife and I wanted to share our experience with Cedar OBGYN to illustrate what a great practice it is, and to provide some guidance on how to make it work for you. I am a software engineer and my wife is a health care worker and daughter of a physician. Before we tell our story we would just like to say that we went to Cedar OBGYN because we wanted to work with the midwives. We envisioned for ourselves a beautiful natural birth with the midwives helping us with their experience, expertise, and patience; using medical interventions only when really necessary. We were pleased with all our interactions with midwives Kavita Noble and Kay Smolley throughout the entire pregnancy. They were recommended to us by different families and with good reason! However, our story involves necessary interactions and eventual delivery with Dr. O'Neill and we would like to share that story with our recommendation of her as well. Well, at 38 weeks, our baby was sitting breech and appeared to be pretty big. We were quickly thrust into the guidance of Dr. O'Neill. Up to this point, we had established little rapport with Dr. O'Neill and were unquestionably put off by her bluntness and lack of outward displays of sympathy. She quickly concluded that the baby would not turn and that we should schedule a C-section for the baby's due date. We weren't prepared to give up our dream birth, so spent the next week and a half trying every known technique for encouraging a turn. At the same time, we were working with the midwives to understand Dr. O'Neill's reasons for not wanting to wait an extra week to give baby a chance to turn. Two days before the due date, we met with Dr. O'Neill first to check on baby's status and then to sit down and discuss why she felt so strongly that a C-section (soon) was the right thing to do. Over the last week and a half we had heard story after story of someone who knew of a baby that turned in the last week or turned after mom went into labor. Dr. O'Neill asked the (now obvious) question - how big were those babies? Most likely, they were in the 6 pound range while this one looked to be in the 9 pound range. After going through many other details we were very satisfied that doing the C-section was the right thing, and doctor O'Neill was very receptive to every question we had about how the procedure would go as well as the small requests we made. At the end of the conversation, she said "I know this isn't what you had hoped for." It was a beautiful and genuine moment of humanity from Dr. O'Neill and it was all we needed to get fully behind her plan. From that moment on, she was a person to us (not just a baby delivering machine), and was one we had a lot of trust in. The birth went incredibly smoothly (and everyone involved treated it is a birth, not just a medical procedure). Dr. O'Neill was right- baby was ready to go. He was already peeling on his hands and feet, his lungs were strong and clear (in spite of not going through the birth canal), and he was indeed over 9 lbs. In the end, we were very happy with the whole process. In retrospect one thing we should have done was to establish a rapport with Dr. O'Neill earlier. Instead we just assumed that we would not have her involved with the birth at all. This is something that is both great about their practice as well as potentially problematic: Dr. O'Neill only deals with the difficult births. If it is a straight-forward birth, Dr. O'Neill doesn't generally get involved. If she does get involved, there is some complication, and she often has to come in and master a new situation very quickly. She is a serious person, and is the right person for serious situations. This can be off-putting when you are in a very vulnerable position, so if you can establish some trust with her ahead of time, things will go much better. Good luck with your process. read more

I've been with Dr. O'Neill for a long time but I had to relocate to Seattle, WA and was so bummed. She's been with me through my first miscarriage 3 years ago and a few other procedures. To my surprise, I found out that I was pregnant again when we stopped trying. My morning sickness was so severe, I had to fly back to CA to be taken care of by my Mother for my 1st Trimester. Dr. O'Neill saw me through my all my 1st trimester lab work and genetic testing. Staff at Cedar Ob/Gyn are so great. When I was spotting on the weekend, I called the on-call person on duty which was Kavita and she made me feel so relieved. I initially thought it was another miscarriage. During my first appointment, Laura was so kind and helpful, she gave me tons of prenatal and folic acid samples with Vit B6 since I was so nauseated. She even threw in vomit bags, ginger tea and chews. I felt really sad on my last and final appointment which was with Kavita, the midwife. She answered all of my questions that I had about my condition, food, test results, etc. She also gave me copies of all my medical paperwork to take back to WA state for my new Ob/Gyn. They are top notch and I wish I could stay with them throughout the rest of my pregnancy but I had to move due to my husband. Thanks Dr. O'Neill, Kavita, Laura and the rest of the staff for everything! I will definitely come by once I have my baby since I visit CA often. read more

If I could give NO stars I would! It was a three year nightmare. I was referred to her by my general doctor for uncontrolled uterine bleeding and my husband refused to let me change doctors(insurance issues) until it finally became too much even for him! She's cold and dispassionate and seems bored at times. She seems more connected to her laptop than her patients. Every time I came in for the bleeding she didn't even give me an exam. She just sat there staring at me blankly and told me there was nothing she could do for me and kept telling me that I was bleeding because I was going through Peri-menopause. She didn't give me any blood tests to check if It really was hormonal or even to see if I was anemic after bleeding for so long. She didn't seem to care. She never offered advice or options and when I asked her about a hysterectomy, she said she thought it was bad idea because SHE didn't perform that operation! On my last visit to her, I was desperate and at the end of my rope, nearly in tears. I told her I wanted to discuss having a Supra-cervical hysterectomy (which is where you take out the Uterus but leave the cervix). Again she said SHE didn't do that type of operation and then she actually laughed at me and said, "what do you need your cervix for anyway, I don't see why you'd want to keep it." Gee, I dunno Dr. O"Neil...let's rip yours out and see if you miss it! UGH!! I was so angry, I cried all the way home out of frustration and immediately got a new GYN. Who by the way, first thing she did was a Blood test and guess what...it's NOT Peri-menopause and I am anemic. Her staff was rude and she had this smelly dog (huge pony sized Mastiff) walking around and sniffing at my crotch and begging to be petted at her Campbell office. I love animals but for F**k Sake! She shut down her San Jose office without notifying her patients and subsequently I went to my appt. only to find everything boarded up and empty. I called the Campbell office and they said they'd wait and gave me attitude because I somehow thru osmosis didn't know the San Jose office had closed. So I get there 20 minutes later and the rude staff tells me to "forget it, we're gonna have to charge you for missing your Appt."!!! Wait...it gets even better.....While Dr Oneill is away on vacation I am referred to someone else in her office for the bleeding.... One of her east Indian midwives wrote on my file that I had been "raped", when I hadn't. She told me that I was in "denial" and even went so far as to say that my husband probably did it and that she would call the authorities on my behalf to report it! Say what?! She told me I needed to be "sterilized" and quickly left the room. WTF...is this some kind of sick joke? Ending yet another frustrating and very weird appointment. I had a helluva time getting that rape thing taken out of my files~! Don't even waste your time. Do yourself a favor and go find a REAL doctor with a professional staff. Dr. O'Neill herself deserves only one star, but I'm bumping it up to two because the certified nurse midwives in the practice (Kavita and Kitt) are so great. I was planning on having a midwife deliver my baby, which is why I originally chose this practice. But after finding out I am expecting twins, I met Dr. O'Neill for the first time. Neither my husband nor I have ever met a physician more cold than she. She walked into the room looking at her laptop and asked me if I had any questions. No hello, no introductions. So I introduced myself. And again, she asked me what my questions were. So I went down my list and didn't get very good answers from her. When I told her I wanted to do everything I could to ensure a good outcome for my twin pregnancy, she told me there was nothing I could do except watch for signs of pre-term labor. Uh, OK. I might as well go smoke some crack, then. After I asked my questions, she did a VERY quick ultrasound to check for heartbeats and didn't say anything else. During the entire appointment, she never once asked ME a single question, which I find disturbing, especially since this is my first pregnancy. If I don't ask her the right questions, the knowledge gap would just go unfilled. Also, I was not able to give a urine sample and when I asked if I could just come back later or in a few days, the staff told me not to worry about it and wait until next month. Again, it's my first pregnancy, so maybe I'm hyper-paranoid, but I feel like in the very least, they should have said I could come back to do the test if I felt like it! In addition, the older receptionist in the office leaves much to be desired. Warning bells went off in my head the very first time I called, but I discounted them since it was just the receptionist. I had scheduled an appointment in the Campbell office specifically, showed up, and it turned out it was closed. When I called the SJ office, the receptionist told me I should have known Dr. O'Neill was on vacation and that all appointments would be in the SJ office while she was gone. In a normal world, they should have called me to let me know the change of venue. (They don't call with appointment reminders either, but I don't consider that a requirement - just a courtesy.) On a good note, if you are lookig for a CNM, Kavita and Kitt are great, as I mentioned. My first appointment with Kitt lasted almost 2 hours - she really took the time to talk to me and it was a fantastic experience! read more

I just tried to go to my first appointment at this office to have an ultrasound. The directions I got online were wrong, so, 15 minutes before my appointment I called the office to get directions (I was very close). The person on the phone gave me the incorrect street name to turn on and I ended up driving up and down Bascom looking for a street that did not exist. Then, because I was late, they canceled my appointment. They wanted to reschedule, but why would I want to go back there when I was punished for their mistake. I just think it's common sense that the person answering the phone should know their location. read more

I have to start this review by expressing shock at some of the negative reviews of Dr O'Neill and racist comments made about Kavita. I don't believe most of the claims made by other yelpers because I've been a patient for ten years and through two births. If I had to describe Dr O, I would say she is professional and a bit shy/reserved, but never unkind or rude. Her midwives are well-informed, friendly and respectful. Dr O'Neill literally saved me from a c-section with my first child. There is no question in my mind, or my doula's, that the majority of the Bay Area OBs would have performed a c-section with my first pregnancy. After 55 hours of very slow labor, I asked for my water to be broken (please note that I wanted to avoid medical intervention during my labor, and neither my baby nor I were in medical distress). Upon breaking my water, Dr O noticed that my daughter was laying on her side, instead of face down, making a normal birth impossible at that point. However, respecting my desire for a natural birth, she allowed my doula and the nurses to try and gently turn my baby (still no distress). She let my husband know that a c-section was likely, but didn't "scare" me by telling me directly. Thankfully, our daughter rolled into the correct position, and I was able to deliver her normally. Oh, and she stayed at the hospital for many hours watching my progress, even though she was dressed up and clearly missing a dinner or party. My second birth was with midwives Kay and Kavita. Kay performed the actual delivery, but being someone who labors forever, I was cared for by both. I had a fantastic experience with them. My second pregnancy was straight-forward, except for being almost two weeks late. Once again, respecting my wishes for minimal intervention, they didn't push me into an unnecessary induction. They kept close tabs on my over-due baby and made certain we were both okay. Finally, Dr O'Neill also saved me from a likely stroke by diagnosing my blood-clotting disorder. After my first child, I experienced several miscarriages, and she performed multiple tests to find the cause. Turned out I had a clotting disorder that would have caused serious problems later in my life! Her tests allowed me to have a successful and safe pregnancy! So, if you want an OB, who's your new buddy, but will most likely c-section you, pick someone else. However, if you want an OB practice that RESPECTS you and truly understands childbirth, I cannot give this practice a strong enough recommendation!! read more

I have to start this review by saying how completely caught off gaurd I am by some of these 1-star reviews. Dr. O'neill is a fabulous doctor. Yes, she is not all rainbows and kittens, but she is intelligent, informative and very knowledgeable. She always makes me feel comfortable and I appreciate her direct and no-nonsense approach. While I have nothing but compasion for the women on here who have lost their children, I don't think it's fair to pass judgement on Dr. O'neill for her reactions to her patient's losses. I'm sure she is just attempting to keep a professional distance. I have had nothing but great experiences with Dr. O'neill and her staff. Roberta (the receptionist) is wonderfully welcoming and sweet. Laura (I'm assuming is an RN or medical assistant) is also always cheerful and friendly. I also LOVE when Dr. O'neill's dogs are with her in the office. They are lovable and well-behaved and make me feel more at ease before going into my appointment. So, if you are someone who wants great medical care, Dr. O'neill is a fantastic choice. read more

I was thrilled until, pregnant with my second child, I had a terrible disagreement with Dr. O'Neill regarding medicine. While Kavita was willing to listen to me and go over my research, Dr. O'Neill wasn't. In fact I was ridiculed. At 7 months pregnant I felt forced to find another doctor in order to protect my child. I've been with Dr. O'Neill for 8 years now. She delivered my first baby and I had Kavita the Midwife deliver my second and Third Child. I have always received great care and attention. I can always get an appointment without having to wait more than a few days or usually the same week in which I call for the appointment. I know Dr. O'Neill isn't the most talkative and outgoing person but that's not what I'm looking for. If I want to chit chat and have some girl talk I can get that from my hairdresser. I trust her Medical knowledge and many years of experience. I have received great medical care and I believe I did get the best care with all my pregnancies. Also I was very grateful when I developed Mastitis with my 3rd child on a Sunday Morning and I was able to call one of the on-call nurses and she called in a prescription to Target for me. She saved me a painful trip to the Dr.'s office and I didn't have to wait an extra day. I've also been very happy when I have to bring all my kids to the office. I have been a patient of Dr. O'Neill for quite a while. Her midwives delivered my first two children. My third pregnancy was very complicated and I ended up in the hospital for over a month until I delivered. Dr. O'Neill came to the hospital to check on me every single day, including weekends. When I ended up needing an emergency c-section she was able to be at the hospital within ten minutes. She was very informed about my condition. She was dead-on accurate as to the care I needed. I felt like she definitely erred on the side of caution and made my safety and the safety of my unborn child paramount. No, she is not over the top warm or fuzzy, but she is incredibly well educated, very intuitive, and she is very caring. She is well known as being one of the best OB surgeons in California. My c-section was done very well despite the emergency situation. I believe she kept me safe and was instrumental in saving my baby. I am very grateful for her care! read more

Would not recommend. Staff doesn't follow through on prescriptions, appointment messages, updates, anything. And yes, its in an older house which could be ok but its dirty and not from the dogs. The bathroom looked like it hadn't been cleaned in months. The dogs are actually a nice bonus to the office. read more

It's true she isn't very friendly. You won't see her smile much, but where she lacks in personality she make up for in knowledge and experience. Everyone else is very friendly and I love her dog. The Midwives are awsome I had one do my c-section and everything was perfect. Dr Oniel really was there for me through my multiple breast infections. Dr. O'Neill is wonderful. She was my OB for both my children. I liked her, because she knew the technical issues of all types of birth. My first child was born within 2 1/2 hours "start-to-finish". My 2nd child was born in 15 minutes. She even told me that the 2nd child would be born very quickly while the nurses at the hospital told me that it was take over 12 hours to deliver my second. I even asked her the strangest questions and she still answered my questions professionally. If I had more children, I would still have her has my OB. Unfortunately, my children had severe food allergies (hereditary) and that was enough for me. She graduated from one of the most prestigious medical schools in the country: Creighton University. She's not rude and pushy. She's actually quite calm and has a sense of humor. She took care of all my needs. Again, I would go to her again if I had another child. read more

My review is actually for the midwives in the office not so much on Dr O'neill. Kay Smolley delivered my daughter and was great. Kavita Noble is also great. It is unlikely that DR ONEIL will deliver your child unless you end with a c-section or high risk issues. I had a couple of visits with her, she does not have much in the personality department but I stayed since I liked the midwives. read more

She didn't brush off my concerns like another doctor of mine did (Dr. Sangita Johnson, I had an awful experience with her.) I have been with Dr. O'Neill's office for 8 months now. My appointments have been great, the staff is friendly and I love their dogs. Once I had an appointment scheduled, but when I arrived it wasn't in their schedule. I'm fairly sure the mistake was on their side. (I don't just write appointments in my planner...) But, they worked me into the schedule and it was just fine. I agree with people who have stated that Dr. O'Neill isn't the most friendly person the first time you meet her. But, do you really need your doctor to be the most friendly person you meet? She does a great job, answers all my questions, and has a great staff. I recommend the office. read more

Dr O'Neill herself is somewhat brusque and not very personable. However, she does seem to have an excellent grasp of medicine (from what a mere layman can tell) and is pretty good about answering questions if you know what to ask. The midwives are what make this office good. All of the midwives my wife and I have interacted with are great. Both our daughters were delivered by midwives and the experiences were positive. They're very supportive and willing to take a lot of time to talk to you about what you want as far as a birth experience. As other reviews have stated, the receptionist--an older lady--is terrible. Barely civil, she makes any request (even routine ones) sound like it's extremely annoying to her and she's doing you a giant favor to answer the phone. read more

I went here for my second pregnancy, having had my first in San Diego. It is a nice welcoming and homey environment, but the only consistent face I would see was the lady collecting my money each appointment. I saw at least three different women during my care. And when it came down to my going into labor, the midwife "on duty" that came to the hospital with me ( mind you my dr., Mary O'Neil never even showed up at the hospital) had no suggestions on how to progress through my labor naturally! She was quicker than the nurses on staff at Good Samaritan to get my epidural in and start me on pitosin! I had to turn to the nurse on duty for ways to stimulate and work through my labor naturally because my own midwife wasn't in favor of it. There was nothing scary or out of the ordinary about my labor, and the whole point to my going to midwives was that I wanted to try and do it naturally. Then when it came down to my actual delivery, both my midwife and my doctor weren't even there. RIDICULOUS! I will NEVER go back to this practice again, I would have better luck just opting for care straight through the hospital. read more

I have only positive things to say about this practice. I had good experiences with Dr. O'Neill, Dr. Vujjeni and all three midwives (there might only be two now). It's true that Dr. O'Neill is not a super warm and friendly kind of doctor, but she definitely knows what she's doing. The practice encourages you to have one of your appointments with everyone at least once and then you are free to see whomever you'd like. If you have a problem free pregnancy you can have one of the midwives attend your birth, otherwise you are encouraged to have either Dr. O'Neill or Dr. Vujjeni deliver your baby. I saw Kavita Noble most frequently and she delivered my baby. She was absolutely amazing and my experience was everything I had hoped it would be. I switched to this practice after first seeing an OB at a very busy practice. She was good but I had to wait a long time before every appointment and she always seemed rushed. I am SO glad that I made the switch. At Dr. O'Neill's practice I never had to wait very long before my appointments and I always felt that everyone I saw had plenty of time to go over any questions or concerns that I had. The midwives are very respectful of your decisions and encourage you to take control of your birthing experience (which is sadly a rare thing in our society). I have really only used the midwives at Dr. O'Neill's practice and I have only had positive experiences with all of them (both while pregnant and non-pregnant). Kavita, especially, provided me with excellent prenatal care and did an amazing job of delivering my baby. My daughter had her umbilical cord wrapped around her neck twice. While I was pushing her heart rate would drop. One of the delivery nurses panicked. However, Kavita remained calm and professional and due to her knowledge and skills I was able to avoid any medical intervention (no drugs or C-section, which was my desire) and deliver a safe and healthy baby. I would strongly recommend her to anyone and hope to use her again if I have another baby. I've never had to wait more than 5-10 minutes at any appointment, either. read more

I am posting this because I read some of the unflattering reviews about Dr. O'Neill and this practice. I changed from an OB/GYN to Dr. O'Neill's practice late in my pregnancy because I wanted a natural birth for my second child and I felt that a midwifery practice would make that more likely. My only hesitation was that I read some of the bad reviews on this website. The care I received from Dr. O'Neill and the midwives was wonderful - they took holistic approach and talked to me regularly about diet, exercise and ways to ensure that I had the labor and delivery I was hoping for. For prenatal care, I met with both midwives and Dr. O'Neill. I found all the care providers to be very competent and caring. I can understand how some people might want a more outgoing or gregarious doctor than Dr. O'Neill but I found her to be kind, helpful and direct (which I appreciate). My labor ended up being uncomplicated. When I went into labor, one of the midwives briefly coached me over the phone. I arrived at the hospital and the midwife arrived minutes later. I ended up with the labor and delivery I had hoped for - natural and unmedicated - it sounds strange but it made me feel blessed to be a woman. Even the hospital staff told me that I was very wise to use one of these midwives! So far, I have not experienced any billing problems, like some of the other reviewers mentioned.
