An old…read moreelementary school friend and I re-connected after many years and we decided we wanted to go away for a little weekend retreat to catch up. I stumbled along this place online and we were so happy I did! The innkeeper was very gracious and gave great recommendations on local restaurants and activities. It was September/October so we decided we wanted to take a "leaf peeping" drive and so we followed a map and some road signs for magnificent views of the New England fall foliage. We even went over a few covered bridges, that was a first for us! We did wine tastings at local nearby wineries, including Hopkins, which was our favorite. We bought some souvenir wine glasses and a bottle (or three) of wine and enjoyed it at Lake Waramaug -- the most beautiful autumn setting -- not far from home base at Constitution Oak. Bunnell Farm was nearby and they have a great corn maze. You can also stop for fresh produce, pickles and preserves at Freund Farm along the Leaf Peeping route. This B&B is in a great area with lots of local attractions nearby, including historic Litchfield. We stayed in a room upstairs and it was huge! There were 3 beds so we both had our own bed and then some. The bathroom was in the hallway but we were the only guests so it didn't matter. There was a nice dining room with pastries and coffee waiting for us in the morning and a cozy sitting room to unwind.

We dined with a small party in a private room, warm and comfy, and boasting elegant, polished service from a sharp and friendly team of servers. Excellent. For Easter, we were given a prix fixe menu ($150 per) that provided some fine choices among appetizers, entrees and desserts. The appetizers included octopus, quail and some super tasty (and NOT overcooked) seared tuna. Delicious. The entrees included duck and chicken but all of us deferred to the tenderloin which was perfectly cooked to our preference, tender and ... well, just what we wanted. Add in the desserts and the drinks -- lots of specialty beverages. all on the pricey side -- and we were totally satisfied. Not a complaint in the group. Winvian is very private, You can't just stroll in. Reservations are necessary, and you'll need to get buzzed in. Once there, however, the well-trained staff provide first-class treatment, thoughtful and never obtrusive. It is a grand experience -- but it is expensive. Definitely for special occasions.

The Plume House Inn in Thomaston had great reviews, so we called and made reservations. Owners Kay and Don made us feel right at home. Kay is a marvelous cook, and with Don's beehive out back, her breakfasts were hearty and fresh. Plenty of gourmet teas (brewed in your own individual teapot!) and a variety of sweet and savory made the morning meal stand out. We drove around Litchfield and surrounding areas. Hiking is plentiful, and can also recommend the Hickory Stick Bookshop in Washington. We had a late lunch at the Market Place Tavern (built in an old jail!) and loved their selection of drinks, apps, and entrees. Back at the Inn, enjoyed restful sleep both nights. Everything is clean, and decorated beautifully. Highly recommended!!

Over the weekend, we finally redeemed our certificate and had the best time! This is definitely my new favorite spot for an afternoon tea experience. The portions were hearty and I actually left full, unlike other tea experiences I've been to in the past. The owner, Kay, goes above and beyond to take care of your group, and everything is made from scratch by her. The sandwiches feature ingredients grown right in their garden (the cucumber sandwich on rye with her homemade dill spread is delicious!), and the angel biscuits were so fluffy. She prepares everything day of or minutes before, so you're getting it all as fresh as possible, and you can taste the difference! The list of teas is extensive. Kay was nice enough to even give us a tour of the inn, and we will absolutely be recommending them to our friends and family traveling in from out of town. I'll be keeping Plume House in mind as a spot to have a shower as well!
