While I may not fully understand what the "public safety center" designation entails, I do have a clear understanding of the level of professionalism, courtesy, and respect the public should reasonably expect when visiting a public facility. Upon arrival, the parking area was decent in size and appeared adequate for what seems to be a medium-volume library. The property is gated, and visitors share the space with government employees. There is also a small outdoor memorial seating area in front of the library. This is a thoughtful feature for visitors who wish to read outdoors, enjoy a snack, or take a break while working remotely. Inside the library, the Young Adult book collection was one of the stronger aspects of the facility and offered several interesting options for checkout. The seating area is relatively small but appropriate for the size of the library. Most seating consists of clustered couch-style chairs, though electrical outlets are limited and provide low wattage. I do not recall whether the facility offers a filtered water refill station. Unfortunately, the positive aspects of the facility were overshadowed by the conduct of the staff. From the beginning of the visit, staff members were not welcoming. Access to the restroom requires staff intervention to unlock the door, and the overall atmosphere conveyed a sense that patrons were being excessively monitored. The most concerning aspect of the visit involved staff behavior toward me personally. I experienced harassment and inappropriate conduct by an employee. While apparently believing I was not paying attention, an employee approached and sprayed chemicals directly at me. This conduct was inappropriate, unprofessional, and inconsistent with the standards expected in a public-facing institution. The current staff should be evaluated regarding their ability to interact with members of the public professionally, respectfully, and appropriately. The conduct described above warrants review and investigation by management. A public library and public safety center should foster an environment of accessibility, professionalism, and public trust. Based on my experience, that standard was not met.

I was very grateful to have finally found this book because it was completely checked out throughout my surrounding orange county locations and Long Beach.

Inside, the library embraces an outdated dark academia aesthetic. The atmosphere is generally quiet, making it a suitable environment for remote workers, students, and anyone looking for a peaceful place to focus. However, there are occasions when librarians become engaged in conversations with one another, causing the noise level to rise and briefly disrupt the otherwise calm environment. The library offers public restrooms, although staff members must unlock the doors upon request. A water fountain is conveniently located nearby for visitors who use reusable water bottles. One of the library's hidden gems is its outdoor garden area. While the tables and benches appear somewhat mismatched and lack decorative appeal, the space receives ample sunlight and provides a pleasant setting to enjoy lunch, read, work outdoors, or simply meditate and recharge during a break. For those looking to study or work remotely, the library provides several shared seating areas, tables equipped with electrical outlets, and a generously sized computer area. The outlets, however, can be inconsistent. The Long Beach library seems to be at the forefront of expanding Filipino heritage in our area, thanks to community activists. One of the latest accomplishments was the opening of the Filipino American Cultural Heritage Collection at the Bret Harte Neighborhood Library in West Long Beach. We couldn't stop by its grand opening on May 31, but was able to stop-in a few days after to check it out. It was great, making me proud that we live in a city that is able to celebrate its diversity. It had the largest display of books authored by Filipinos or about Filipino-Americans that I have seen in the area, occupying a decent size alcove room near the front. There are prominent signs announcing its location, along with free bookmarks, stickers, and badges. Between the 3 of us, we checked out quite a few books to peruse at home, which is a big change from our usual reading of content strictly on-line. Almost forgot...the library is named after a famous Californian author, poet, and newspaper man, who lived during the California gold rush. He lived during the times of strong anti-Chinese racism and Mark Twain, with whom he had a complicated and adversarial relationship. Learnt a bit more (not nice) things about Mark Twain as well. Also learned that there are elementary schools named after Harte in both Long Beach and Burbank, but also in Chicago, IL (not sure why).

With e-Books popularity, the actual hard or softback books are starting to be extinct. With only…read moreone major book chain left, the only other place to go is the library. As far as the size, this is one of the smaller ones, plus, if you're not a member of the Golden Rain Foundation, you cannot get a library card here. For for those of us who can, it's a good place to read the local papers, USA Today and quite a bit of current magazines. A number of books are available and not too hard to find. There are a number of computers connected to the internet as well. My favorite is the checking out of DVD and Blu-Ray, both movies and TV series. This place is here to stay since it caters to seniors and it is located in Leisure World.

I picked up a book on hold here and the lady working was EXTREMELY sweet and gave me a lot of library information that I wasn't aware of! This library is small and does not have many books but you can still put books on hold and pick them up here! Apparently a shuttle can drive the books over for you. Score! I'll definitely use this location more often!
