I have enjoyed good burgers in Upstate New York, New Orleans, and lots of places in between. The bacon cheeseburger here was the best burger I have ever eaten! The cheese was perfect, the veggies (including sliced avocado) were fresh and crisp, and the chilis (of course) were spot on. My wife enjoyed the rueben, which was also freaking amazing. I can't even begin to tell you that David has driven us through the entire state of Oklahoma. Through the back roads, corn fields and very dry agricultural areas. Today was no exception. We had some time so we left the Guyon OK and headed toward New Mexico. So we are always looking for a place to eat lol! We ended up going through the town of Boise, then on to Clayton NM. I found Mary's Back Porch on Yelp and it was the only place open in town that we could find. It is totally eclectic! Flowers. bric a brac- even a cockatoo when you walk in. We walked to the back and there were a few tables covered in red checkered table cloths. Ruby the server and all around go to person, brought us menus. I had a chicken salad sandwich on Sourdough and a cup of. Poblano cheese soup. The soup was excellent and I didn't care for the chicken salad because it was on the sweeter tasting side. Dave had the brisket quesadilla and corn chips with salsa. His was delicious as was my soup. It's sad to see a town where hardly any businesses can survive. The restaurant is actually in the back of a flower shop. It took us three tries to find it. I had pozole and an egg salad sandwich. My husband had a BLT. I am so glad we stopped, because the food was fabulous, and our total check was $20. The place is small and eclectically decorated. The service was excellent. Looks sketchy on the outside and kinda messy on the inside but food is amazing! Service was quick but we Were the only ones there. We got the Raspberry and Peach Tea (called flavored tea on the menu) and it was good but you might have to add sugar and please make sure to MIX IT WITH A SPOON. The syrup was all at the bottom. Grilled Cheese, Brisket Quesadillas, Brisket Burger, and Hamburgers were excellent. It was about $15 a person which is pretty cheap. We arrived at 10:20 MDT after coming from Amarillo TX. They agreed to let us in and order before their 11:00 opening time. Ruby was very friendly and made fresh chicken salad and a grilled Rueben for me even though chef was not there yet! Food was great, prices fair and friendly. Cute concept and darling decor for a luncheon deli. It is located in the back of Mary's Flower shop. The menu is rounded out enough that you can find something for most any palate. I had the bread bowl filled with mushroom soup. Who would have thought you could find what is essentially a brioche hollowed out and filled with a tasty soup in such a small town as Clayton, NM? We had been on the road all day and were looking for a place to stop and grab a bite. Your going to have to look for this one, the door is in the side of the building on the street. The front of the building is a second hand store I think. We were not sure when we went in, it looked as if the place was an after thought rather than a restaurant. Mary's filled the bill nicely -- very friendly people, excellent service, a nice menu and good food. There's a flower/gift shop in the front of the building and we had a very nice conversation with Mary, who was working on a special order for the high school kids for Homecoming this weekend. read more

While it's not really a back porch but a room behind Mary's Gift Shop, Florists & Children's clothing shop, we were pleasantly surprised at the quality of service and food. Stopped in for a quick bite while driving back to Texas. There isn't a lot to choose from in Clayton, so we decided to try it. The food was quick and warm (mostly). I ordered a spud with chili and cheese. The potato was cold in the middle, the chili was from a can, and it was cooked in a microwave. The boyfriend ordered a chicken wrap, which was also cooked in the microwave. The wrap was good and the salsa was spice. Guacamole was homemade. The staff was friendly and nice, and the kids were helping in the shop. Definitely a family business. Overall not bad, but reminded me of eating in the dorm kitchen in college. read more
