Went in and we were seated quickly, but the food took over and hour and a half to come out. The server was strange to say the least. She was talking to her co worker, and having a great time. We called her over and asked if we could get at least the salads we ordered and her response was that rhetorical kitchen was backed up. She could've easily helped them to make the salads. After an hour we ask if there was an update on our food. Her response was she didn't know but she needed to go to the bathroom. What?!?!? Nonetheless we got our food. While the burgers were okay the chicken fried steak was not that. It looked like a patty with slimy breading. The whole experience was awful. Fun decor, especially outside. Kinda slow with the food, we were the second couple in at 11am, it was 30 minutes ish before we got our food. The place started filling up at about 1115 am. Chicken fried steak and fries - perfect portion for me, I'm 61, tender, for once I didn't have to spit out a single piece of chicken fried steak! I guess home cooking is worth a little wait . Green beans had bacon, onion, and were good as well, fries good too. Sunshine Burger and fries - fries were good, there was meat in the hamburger! We stopped on our way through town. The food was alright, nothing great or terrible. The kids were excited for fish tacos, but then said it was too spicy. Burger was good. The service was really the outstanding part of this stop. We probably won't be back because of the unimpressive food, but if e we went back, it would be for the service. We had an awful experience at this restaurant. After traveling for five hours, we were just looking for a good meal before arriving in Amarillo. We ordered a Philly cheesesteak sandwich, but our waitress misunderstood and brought out a chicken fried steak instead. When we pointed it out, they said it was no problem and would fix it right away. During our wait, another waitress even came by and assured us our meal would be out soon. Fast forward 45 minutes--during which other tables were seated, served, and finished eating--and we still had no food. When I asked our waitress about it, she claimed there were several orders ahead of ours and it would be "quite a while." Frustrated, I told her we might just have to leave, though we weren't sure where else to go since this seemed to be the only restaurant around. Another waitress overheard us and promised it would just be a short while longer. Ten minutes later, we finally received what they called a "Philly steak." It was something like taco meat thrown on a bun. When they asked what I wanted them to do, I told them we didn't think we should have to pay for it. The owner did agree to void the bill, but by then, the damage was done. We didn't even eat the food because it tasted awful, we were completely stressed out, and I was honestly near tears. Our recommendation? Pick up a snack at Love's travel stop instead. Avoid this place. read more

Food was pretty awful, but maybe that was just the dishes we ordered? The Cobb salad tasted off and it came out without the avocado or egg. I asked for them and was brought the egg and a saucer of guacamole. Bacon on the salad tasted old. The taco plate comes with corn tortillas, which was kind of odd, and the rice was just pink mush. Our 13 yr old was thrilled with her mini corn dogs and French fries, so maybe the wife and I just ordered poorly. Great bathroom though, and super clean! read more

We were seated promptly and our orders didn't take very long at all to come out. My wife had the enchiladas and I had chicken fried steak. What a cooperative group of servers! The end of a long day of Sunday driving for me and almost the end of their workday yet the wait staff and the kitchen staff were willing to put together a taco salad for me to carry out. Service was exceptional and the atmosphere welcoming! First visit to Clayton and stopped here for lunch. Drinks were refilled consistently during our stay. When my Cobb salad came out I expected sliced avocado and received about a 1/2c of avocado "pudding" on top of my salad. Interesting to say the least. Bathroom was gigantic and super clean. A small Americana cafe that also serves Mexican fare. Excellent service from some very proud local workers. Small town with a small employee pool to get good quality service workers? But they did it. Super friendly and super efficient. Looks like they knew just about everyone coming in the front . . . or back, door. Prices were good and portions were adequate. Passing through Clayton, and decided to try this restaurant (we've passed by it many times on the way to visit relatives in Texas). WELL WORTH THE STOP. DELICIOUS chicken fried steak. The server was great. We love the local, non-chain places, and this one did not disappoint. PLUS, when most of the diners are locals, and seem to know everyone, we feel that is the highest endorsement. 2/6/25-When I stopped for the night the guy at my hotel recommended this place. It had classic American food. I ordered the cat fish which came with fries and slaw. I would say that the volume to price was ok. The problem was how greasy the fish was. They really needed to dry the fish on paper towels or something. The batter had a good flavor, but just way too much grease. I actually could not finish my fish because of how greasy it was and I would not recommending this dish if you do not have a gallbladder. The server was nice. Even though they weren't busy there was one large group of construction workers. From the people that were there when I was I would say it was popular with the locals. Super cute place with good food and nice folks. My husband and I shared the steak quesadilla (which was a big serving with perfectly crisp tortilla, tender steak, and good quality cheese) so we could save room for pie (banana cream and definitely worth saving room for!). We sat on the porch so our dog could hang out with us. The well placed ceiling fans helped a lot with the heat and it was nice to sit in the shade and check out all the decorations. The service was excellent! And for those on road trips like we were, the added bonus of private, well maintained bathrooms! A fun stop on a road trip. Really cute outdoor seating that is creatively put together with railroad boxes. I recommend the nachos. The half portion is huge and the amount of toppings are amazing. The hamburger is standard -- not overly flavorful but generous in size. I ordered the chicken fried steak. It was acceptable to good. It's about 7 inches in length and comes with green beans and your choice of potatoes. The gravy was quite delicious on top. The chicken fried steak was a little on the lumpy side. Not nice and crispy as I'm used to eating. I don't think it was worth the $13+ for the other unless you are craving cafeteria style country fried steak. We were passing through on our way home to Fort Worth and happened to google local food places when this popped up! We wanted a restaurant to dine-in and 87 offered us that with their outdoor seating area, under the beautiful blue skies! It really was a relaxing lunch break. They aren't allowing inside dining just yet, but they do offer take out. So you have options. The waitress was super friendly and attentive, her gorgeous blue eyes gazing at us from behind her mask. I am quite sure she has a beautiful smile as well, I wish I knew her name to give her a shout out!! I ordered the Tuscan chicken sandwich with the fries, they're homemade cut fresh. Husband ordered the supreme nachos, half sized which was perfect. He even had a little extra left on his plate. We also ordered the Mac and cheese for our kiddo, it looked like the Mac and cheese that comes from a box (not the shells). She loved it. We ate here Thursday on our way to Santa Fe. Food was good, service was good but the wait for our food was almost 30 minutes even though the place was not busy. We stopped back on Sunday 11 am on our return trip. The place was fairly busy but still had a number of empty tables. When the server took our order, he said 35 minutes for our food. We said OK. After waiting 65 minutes with no food in sight, we paid for our drink and left. We were not alone in our wait. Many people had been waiting as long as we did. There is something wrong with their kitchen when you consider our experience and the reviews of other people. They need to correct the problem, or they will go out of business. read more
