For all the haters
Erin T.

If you want upscale drinks and high class atmosphere, I suggest you go next door. This place is gritty, tenebrous and pleasantly elegiac...and I love it!! The first night I went there was to watch a Monday Night football game. They have a newer 60in flat screen and theater sound system was amazing. The bartender was kind enough to everyone to turn down the volume during the commercials so that one could hold a conversation. The beer was cold and the price was right...$2.50 for a 12oz domestic, $3.50 for the big bottle. I met a few people and engaged in some thought provoking and intelligent conversation. I went there with $20 and I crawled home with $10. I had so much fun that I went back the next night for the open stage. I was absolutely blown away by the talent!! The participants are people who regularly play with other bands later in the week. They were not just practicing..they were straight up jamming and knocking out the hits. They played everything from Bluegrass to Stevie Ray, to Prince to Eric Church. The acoustics might not be the best, but they have a really good sound system to make up for that. I could here all the instruments and the vocals and the bonus is I didn't go home deaf. At least not that night anyway. The bathrooms have recently been remodeled and were very clean. Everyone was so friendly and welcoming and not at all annoying. If you don't want to be bothered, no one will bother you in this place. Being a female, sometimes that is hard to find. Whether you are homeless or you drive a brand new Mercedes...it seems everyone is welcome here. I moved to Rockford from Central WI, and while I don't get home as often as I would like to, this place is the next best thing. I will definitely be back!!

The music is great! Their new pizzas are phenomenal. as a regular hangout, it may not be the place for civilized people.

Javier has turned this place into a first class bar/restaurant. City Market has never been the same…read moresince Javier has introduced an outstanding Mexican Menu during The City Market venue. During the day from 11: 00 A.M. to 3: 00 P.M. this is the place to go and have lunch. A first class menu, great prices, great food and they are not stingy with the portions. On Friday they have the best Fish Fry and Fried Shrimp dinner that any of the social clubs in town can't even come close to as far as price, quality and size of the portions. Come on in and have Erica show you what a first class act she is and all of the rest of the beautiful bartenders that wait on folks at CJ's. Don't mind the skinny Old Troll that runs the place. He is the only detriment about CJ'S. Otherwise, I highly recommend a visit to CJ's Public House. Very friendly, inclusive and low key.

Forget this place. My friend and I watched an older male bartender serve every single person around…read moreus except for us. We patiently waited as maybe we thought he didn't see us. We were trying to give him the benefit of the doubt, but after waiting almost 30 minutes and continuously watching him ignore us as we had our money out, we grew frustrated and walked around to the other side of the bar. We still continued to get ignored, so we asked this very sweet young girl to get us a drink while we gave her our cash. Shocker.... the same older male bartender (that ignored us) served her right away. Imagine that? My friend and I have no idea why we were ignored. It left us very confused. But I can attest to this, that will be my last time ever going to CJ's. My family has owned a restaurant in Rockford for over 30 years, and I've never experienced such rude service at an establishment before.

How have I lived in Rockford for years and never heard of this place?! This is a hidden gem…read more There are many things going for this spot. It might be small, but it's mighty. A very long beer list, great whiskey options, and a full bar to start you off right. The food is good, and they run daily specials which you can find on the homepage of their website. We came on a Wednesday so I ordered a buffalo chicken salad and got $2 off. Between the rest of our family, we ordered the brat Mac n cheese (unique and delicious), wings (70 cents on Wednesdays), the Detour burger (my favorite of the bunch) and the Cobb salad. The salads were my least favorite (which I guess is not surprising). The service is good and it was not crowded which opened up the staff to make us feel very cared for. The biggest plus about this place is the value. Most of the menu options are under $10 (and that's not even with the daily special discounts applied) and worth every penny. The only negative I can think of is that I've been missing out all these years. Excited we've found another great hidden spot in Rockford!

It's a really long bar. There's plenty of tables to sit. There's a game room in the back will be back.
