This review is hard to rate because we had two different experiences from one day to the next. We were in Rockford for a softball tournament and Rascals is next to the fields. It's a nice sized place and has a decent sized bar and a pretty extensive menu too. On day one we went in for just a drink or two and and a quick bite, and the food was good especially the fresh cut fries so we were excited to come back to eat the next day. Staff was nice and the Bloody Mary I had was really good. It was empty but it was also early. Now for day two, so we had the idea to take the team for lunch between games along with many other teams this tournament. Now I want to preface this with the day before we asked the bartender/ manager if they would be okay if we brought in a large number of people , and she said that yes she anticipated this and had an extra three servers on. Well the reality was they were not prepared. Table were waiting for 2 hours for food! Nothing came out together and you just ate when it came, and it made it tough when the girls had a game to get to as well. My daughter had to eat her burger in about 5 minutes just to be on time. They were extremely apologetic and were trying their best, but it was a mess. One of the moms on our group literally had to take orders and get them to the kitchen so we could eat. The crazy thing is that this place is big, so how can you be so unprepared. Maybe they rarely have that many people, but at the same time there were still open tables and others left not wanting to wait so long. Always had a pleasant experience in the past before tonight. Came in with a party of six, sat ourselves as we always do. They were not overly busy. We sat without anyone acknowledging us, not a nod or a hello, no menus were brought, no service at all. I was obviously watching waitresses and staff walk past us. Finally after 20 minutes or more I stopped someone and asked if anyone would be serving us, she said," I don't know I will find out." This is one of the more popular spots in Northern IL Metro in terms of sports bars Pros: +Good location, decent parking +One of the cleanier bars in terms of Ambience in the area. +Bar stock is on par with any other other local establishment Cons: -I have yet to eat something from here that actually would draw me to Rascals. Any food I've had from here is pretty routine bar food and is really "been there, done that". Is not bad, but it doesn't stick out in any way -The layout is kinda a mess. One gets the impression on how the heck the staff can keep up with what's going on. Service seems pretty random. -This place is LOUD. If they have any kind of live music you're not going to hear your companion. Period. Bottom Line: I have an appreciation for Rascals. It's simply not my scene. The service level is more adept to something I would expect out of a club. Its the customer experience that got the 2 star, and it was to tough rate it like that because its not a bad place. Came here on a Friday night for dinner and the place is usually always busy during the Friday night fish fry. The parking lot was full but there was still open seating. I got the smothered chicken with steak fries and it was pretty good. The chicken had a blackened char flavor to it and it was topped with bacon, cheese, onions, tomatoes. I also love steak fries, they also had regular fries as an option as well. My bf and his dad both got the walleye dinner - one got it Cajun style and the other got it blackened. They both said that the walleye had great flavor but the seasoning was too much and made it salty and they even had to scrape some of the seasoning off. Service was not the best. When you order a drink you shouldn't have to go up to the bar to grab it yourself. Also asked for a side of ranch and I was almost done with my dinner before it arrived to the table. She did apologize multiple times for the wait and said that she was busy with a big table that just finished up. Overall, I think the food is a hit or miss. This is the first time I've ever ordered food from Rascal's. I drive by and it's always packed. I went there once for a birthday party, but that is the extent of my relationship with Rascals. Anyway, it's Friday, and I'm looking for beer battered fish. My husband wants a burger. I call a couple of places and pick up time is 1.5 hours. No. I took a chance a called Rascals. Such a pleasant gentleman took my order, answered questions about the menu, said it would be 20 minutes. I arrived about 18 minutes later, and same pleasant gentleman greeted me for my pick up. I mean seriously so nice! Immediately someone brought my food out, no waiting!!! I paid and was out the door. When I opened the carry out boxes, both dinners looked delicious! I was so excited to eat it, I forgot to take pictures! My fish was lightly beer battered and the fish was so light and flaky, choice of potatoes, which included a baked potato, which I chose, because why not?!? He asked if I wanted butter and sour cream. Definitely. Beautifully baked potato. A sweet dinner roll which was fabulous, 2 containers of butter (heart be still!), sour cream, the tartar sauce was a perfect compliment to the fish, and the coleslaw was crunchy, sweet and tangy. Next time I will dine in, because to be honest, fish loses it crispness in a covered box traveling from the restaurant to my house, but even so, I was in the clean plate club!!! Well done Rascals! Compliments to the kitchen staff as well as the waitstaff! And yes, I'm gonna salt that lemon and eat that too!!! Oh yeah! Rascals is a local sports bar and restaurant located in a great location in Rockford Illinois. Located at the corner of a major intersection which made it easy to get in and out. Another plus is that we were in a camper with a trailer tow behind needed lots of parking and the parking lot had ample parking. Our waitress Kaylawas very attentive and came to our table at least six times during our one hour dinner visit which was very attentive. I ordered an IPA which is really good and she kept our Waters filled throughout the dinner. My friend ordered the chicken gumbo as a side soup and he said it was very good. IPA was delicious 16 and 24 oz. my wife had the special work which was the Pineapple Express spinach wrap which is notable because it had large chunks of chicken which was very unusual and delicious however the pineapple jalapeno sauce was a tad bit too hot for the average person.  The jalipeno peppercorn burger was larger than expected, very spicy. First off, they were not busy when we got there. Our server, Scott, was super nice when he came to greet us and take out drink order 10 minutes after we sat down. He came back about 20 minutes later to ask us if we wanted an appetizer, (by then everyone needed another round of drinks.) We asked one question about the menu because we were going to order an appetizer. After he answered the question, he apologized because he needed to take someone else's drink order and proceeded to walk away from our table. Came back ten minutes later to take our order, and we had to ask for refills on drinks. He came back a while later with everyone's but 3 of them. Then he walked to every table but ours. As they got busier, my sister asked if he was the only server. He said yes, they weren't expecting to be busy, ( even though a bunch of people came to watch the baseball game that was on..) But he said he liked being this busy... It didn't seem like he did. I walked up to the bar to get the drinks he forgot, and he rudely looked up at me and said, "what do you need?!" One pizza was forgotten about and definitely just thrown into the oven for 5 minutes barely had any chicken on it, and the sauce with just in the middle. I could've thrown that together in my own kitchen. Another pizza had hair BAKED into it. He took it off our bill, and took the entire pizza and never offered to replace it for the kids. If I could give a negative review I would. I went there to enjoy a night out by myself and got met with the WORST bartender of my life. I sat down. It took over 10 minutes for someone to even ask me if I wanted anything. Mind you, I am a patient person. That patience goes out the window when people who just walked up get served before you even get a hello. This bartender practically ignored me the whole night. When I asked her why, I got told because she was serving them drinks. Yet, I was not even getting served. It took me speaking out to get a menu or even a shot. When I FINALLY get my food it was ice cold. I kept my cool and was still trying to be nice. Even though I sat there ready to oder for over 10-15 minutes. My drink was gone. I didn't even get offered a water while I wait. No words were exchanged. She proceeded to cop an attitude with me for just asking simple questions. Threatened to call the cops on me. Over SIMPLE questions. She even instructed the other bartenders not to even talk to me just because I asked another bar tender if she knew any information. I asked for the higher ups name. She refused to give it. I asked for any name for when I call in. Refused to give it to me. Kept threatening to call the cops all because I asked for a higher ups number. I paid a 20, 10, and 6 1 dollar bills. Just to be told I was short 10 dollars when my meal and everything was only 31. When I asked for my change she copped an attitude and said I still owe. Even AFTER paying yet another 10 dollars. If I were you? Don't ever go to this bar. This is the 3rd time this kind of thing has happened. To me and to people I know. Don't ever go there. read more

I've eaten here multiple times. It's a great place to go, chat with friends or even have larger gatherings. A motorcycle group I belong to holds their monthly meetings there. The service is usually pretty good. On the rare occasion I've had a less than stellar waitresses. Everything I've eaten there has been good. One time I had soup and it was a little on the cold side, but again that was a rarity. One of my favorites is the Jalapeno Pepper Jack Burger, if you like your meal with a little kick. Get it! I've used Rascals for everything from Large Groups to just a casual date. For those on motorcycles, they are VERY biker friendly. They even have special spots designated just for those of us that like riding steel horses. read more

I try to be empathetic due to lack of staff with Covid, but our experience went beyond that. Went last night with a group of work friends. We all straggled in a different times and all got drinks shortly after arrival. However things really slowed down after that. Our waitress was stretched thin between 3 large parties. We ordered fries for an appetizer, they came out cold. We also ordered jalapeño poppers that never came out. They didn't give us any plates or silverware for the appetizers, we had to find someone to get that for us. After about 20 minutes of waiting for more drinks, someone else came over to take our second round drink orders only because we went to the bar and asked for assistance. She took our drink orders but then had the waitress deliver it and she didn't know what drink was what and there was a lot of confusion. We ordered food at 7:15 and didn't get our food until 8:45. The waitress reached across our table and got her sleeve in my friends salad. No third round of drinks. Two of us didn't get our food. The waitress came back to check on us and didn't even realize two of us didn't have food yet. They comped those meals but we didn't get to eat with everyone else and didn't get them until 9:15. Then my friend found a hair in her order. We waited forever for the checks and everything was screwed up. You could tell the waitress was overwhelmed, but what really bugged me is the management never came over to assist or correct the situation with us. And there were other workers there that clearly could have stepped up to help. It was insane. I don't think I've ever had a worse experience. The food, once we got it, was decent. read more

I live in Chicago and went to this bar while I was in the Rockford area visiting a friend. It was a really fun time! I'm a big fan of dive bars in Chicago, but I wasn't sure what to expect from a place like this in Machesney Park. I was pleasantly surprised. The drinks were cheap, the waitresses were cute and friendly and the crowd had a good mix of people. There was a band playing rock music from the '60s and '70s the night we went, so we had to pay a $4 cover at the door, but it was well worth it. They sounded really good and played a lot of my favorite songs. The crowd had a lot of older people (I think because of the band), but there were many middle-aged and younger people there too. Everyone we talked to while we were at Rascals was friendly ... with the exception of one girl who was a little bit too friendly and offered to give my husband a BJ. But other than that, the other customers were nice and personable. I also thought this place didn't have enough seating. All of the tables and stools at the bar were filled, so our group was forced to sort of camp out along a wall next to the restrooms. My friend who lives in the area said Rascals usually isn't that crowded, so I'm thinking the band must have brought in a lot of the customers that night. Overall, I had a fun time at Rascals (sans girl offering to give my hubby a BJ), and if I'm in the area again visiting my buddy, I would definitely want to go back. read more

Overall this is a great place to enjoy good food and drinks with friends. I have been to Rascal's several times and have never been disappointed. I will admit their prices are comparable to what you would see in Chicago, and as we all know Rockford is NOT Chicago. That being said, the food is always great, the staff is always very inviting and the drinks are ALWAYS cold. They have a cool outdoor area that allows you to play bags, its open enough that non-smokers like myself are not overwhelmed by those who are smoking. I am always taken back how big their Restaurant/Bar is. They have bands on a regular basis and it is always jam packed when they do. I highly recommend this place if you have not been. Today's Review is not Pleasant; Debbie and I have been in here many a time. Very disappointed tonight.service was a bit slow on the start up but progressed ok. Ordered the Meatloaf dinner for the both of us. Along with salads and a cup o soup...salads are placed and waitress (Lisa) said she'd be right back with the soup. 30sec later soup was here. Just started on the soup and Debbie her salad when the Meatloaf dinners were delivered...sat looking at my dinner getting cold. 10min later she stopped and asked how things were, We said well not that you ask our dinners were cold. I would easily give Rascals a 4.5 because I love the homemade fries and atmosphere but the service has never been their strong point. Several times when deciding on where to go to eat or have drinks, someone in our group will mention Rascals but when the issue of service comes up, we decide on another place, like Neighbors. Seems like an easy thing to fix but in the 3 years I've been coming here, they never have fixed it. My guess they never will. But then you never know. read more

Decent bar with a great staff. If you take the time to mingle, magic tricks and shot over pours will begin to slide your way. I love how the jukebox plays the music video of the song you selected on all the TV's. This is awesome when someone picks 2pac "how do you want it" followed by Michael Bolton "how can we be lovers". Priceless. The crowd is all across the board mixed. Day drinking is an older bunch while the night crowd is a bit of the same combined with 20-somethings. Definantly worth a stop if you rin the area. I have not tried the food, but they have plenty of daily specials to intice you. On an aside, this is stage 3 for the coug Spring/Summer circuit.
