The tikka masala was good and is served mild by default so ask for some heat if you like it that way. The butter chicken is not on the menu but they have a Paneer version so they will make the butter chicken for you upon request. They used to serve a buffet but stopped during the pandemic and didn't start back up due to lack of dine in recovery. Who gets pizza at an Indian joint? We do! A group of friends and I went to Masala House in East Greenbush to try their Indian fusion pizzas. We ordered a few of their appetizers which were all great - the samosas were pretty heavy on the nutmeg and cinnamon though. Then we went on to order three of their pizzas which were well executed and tasty! They weren't over powering with Indian spice but were just enough. The crust was naan dough and were crispy and tasty. In our approximately 2 hours stay, we were the only guests in the restaurant. There was some pick up orders coming through but no one dining in. For us being the only ones there, our service was extremely lack luster. The waiter taking our orders was awkward, they told us not to order one of the pizzas because it gets soggy, then the food took a very long time to come out. Between the apps and the pizza we all felt it was taking a while. But, all in all, it was a decent meal. It's a good place for some indian if you're in the area! This place is A-Ok. I went for the lunch buffet and was pleasantly surprised at all the new-to-me options available. I've made chana bhindi (fried okra in Indian spices) at home but I've never seen it in an buffet before. Also chana masala (chickpeas) were offered! There was no butter chicken so I didn't know if that was my timing or if it isn't in their buffet line-up. Finally, there was tikka masala chicken and two kinds of dal. A whole vat of mint sauce. And tandoori chicken! So there were lots of old favorites served in a new way, plus new foods to try. All of the food was delicious and I went back for seconds. I finally ordered some chai ($3) and there were two versions so I went with masala chai. It was very creamy and spicy, so I was very pleased. The one thing that I couldn't shake is the overwhelming lack of spice and a startling sweetness in all the food. I looked at the menu and it said there were Bangladeshi foods as well as Indian and Pakistani foods, so I wondered if that is where the sweetness was coming from, since I don't know that cuisine. I always complain about the lack of restaurants in the East Greenbush area, so I was excited when this place opened up recently right in the center of everything. I haven't been able to dine in yet, but recently got some takeout that was great. I'm hoping for an in person visit soon to check out the decor (maybe for the buffet) and potentially bump them up to that last star. The chicken karahi is excellent - really one of my favorite Indian meals I've had in a while. The sauce was a perfect rich thickness, and the spices were deep and interesting. The chicken was nice tender white meat chunks, and there was a good amount of it along with peppers and onions. I do wish the dish was a tiny bit spicier. The vegetable samosa appetizer was also great. The shell had a nice flavor and consistency without being overly fried and greasy like some are. The filling was packed with vegetables. We went for lunch buffet, it was pretty decent, good warm Indian food. The naan was freshly served, although I didn't understand why did they ask our table, how much we need? I don't know, however many I feel like eating lol. Sort of impressed with buffet. I did a dinner take out, beef dish is bit too spicy( vindaloo ) I guess, that explains. And malai Kofta, was good. The koftas were bit too hard and greasy, I couldn't find any freshly ground vegetables. See after having malai kofta from RIP Sitar restaurant, nothing really tops that level. But overall it was fairly good treat! Vegetable Samosas were fresh made, although the mint sauce is very runny, no yogurt base. Tamarind sauce was good though, got the job done. read more

I came here to improve my rating from 3 to 4 stars because the problems mentioned previously seem to have been addressed. The overall management seems to have only gotten better in the last few months and given this was under pandemic restrictions, this is huge. Yay, Masala House! As for food, 5 stars. They have an array of complex flavors, a fairly extensive menu, including a few items somewhat unique to other Indian restaurants in the area (pizza?!). We love the paneer dishes, chicken tikka, the veg samosas. They are great at altering spice/heat level to your taste. Pricing since their increase at the beginning of the year still feels too high for takeout. No one lowers prices though, so improvements like paper cartons (like the ones Maharaja in Colonie uses) rather than plastic and styrofoam would be great as would a takeout menu with descriptions of the items. Masala House has been a wonderful go-to for us during this lockdown. I'm grateful! read more

When this place first opened, I was thrilled. I love Indian, and it's local. We went here a few times and we liked it. A couple of weeks ago, after learning that the lunch buffet was back open, we returned. Initially, I was surprised that the service was so shoddy. They used to be so attentive, but this time, we were hardly given the time of day. We were told to "seat ourselves", but none of the tables were cleaned off. We asked to have one cleaned. I think the guy was surprised that he was being asked to work. Then we got to the buffet. It was late (after 1:30) so I knew we might miss out off some stuff, but it was practically empty, and what was there had clearly been sitting around for a while. Whatever. It's still Indian, right? Except not right. Once we sat down, I started to really notice how filthy the place was. Honestly, I cannot think too hard about the fact that I actually ate anything there because it will make me nauseous. We wound up leaving very quickly. My husband said the men's room was also disgusting. Unless you have an iron stomach and are willing to turn a blind eye, you should stay far far away. read more

Finally East Greenbush has an Indian Restaurant in town. It used to be an IHOP so the restaurant is very spacious with plenty of seating. It is clean and well decorated in the Indian fashion. I was there around 6 o'clock and there weren't any dinners but plenty of people coming through for take out. I ordered the chicken korma with naan bread. It was an excellent choice as this dish was favorfull but not spicy. The service was great as my server was friendly. I will definitely come back. read more

The desi pizza is something new and different.The beef or chicken keema pizza replaces seasoned ground beef (or chicken) for tomato sauce. It has a great flavor, with just a hint of warmth. But they have great "traditional" indian food as well. Butter chicken, vindaloo, korma, palak paneer - all have great depth of flavor. Of course, there is the daily, lunch buffet. This is the best introduction to what Masala House offers, but then you'll want to follow-up with some of your favorites for dinner, either to dine in or take home. read more

As Masala House is very close to where I live (and I echo another reviewer in saying that I was very excited to have an Indian Food option in East Greenbush), I wanted to love this place. However, after two visits for takeout, I have to say I'm not overly impressed. The Good: * They have a lot of menu items to choose from, including some enticing vegetarian, and options you don't always see elsewhere, such as Goat dishes. * Prices are a little bit less than competitors in the Capital Region, so that's cool. * They've consistently gotten our orders correct / complete, even when there's substitutions and a lot of different selections. * Masala House is good about subbing in chicken breast meat for dark meat if that's your preference (it is mine), so I do appreciate that. Some places are a pain in the butt about this. * The owner seems like a very nice guy. He always rings out orders with a smile, and I watched him carry about 10 catering trays to an older woman's car for her. I do feel that he's been working on his customer service and genuinely cares, which is really commendable. * The first dish I ever ordered was the Beef Vindaloo, and I was happy with it. The flavor was good; what I was used to, in terms of a richly flavored sauce, with good cuts of beef. It wasn't as spicy as I had hoped, but I also did not specify how spicy I wanted it. (So just know that their baseline spice is pretty mild.) The Bad: * I've tried three other dishes besides the Vindaloo, and I haven't liked any of them. The Beef Palak was disarmingly salty, with nothing much else in the way of accenting spice. I had to add a bunch of cumin, garlic, pepper, Turmeric and a dash of cream just to make it palatable. I also wasn't overly pleased with some of the fatty cuts in this dish, either. The Chicken Korma was quite bland, as was the Chicken Karahi. In addition, the naan was pretty lackluster. It wasn't pillow-y, flavorful or even hot, and I ordered three different varieties over the course of two visits. That was pretty disappointing, as I've seldom had bad naan anywhere! Conclusion: Overall, I just feel that the value isn't really here right now. I'd rather drive all the way to Curry House in Hudson for slightly higher priced meals of far superior quality. I may give them one more chance and try the lunch buffet, since that's super affordable and I can sample a lot of different dishes at once. I hope they will tweak the recipes a bit with time to make them tastier, because I'd love to have a solid Indian option so close by. read more

I checked out Masala House for lunch today. I tried the buffet so I could try a variety of dishes. I enjoyed everything I tried. The chicken tikka masala was very good, no over cooked, the vegetable korma was also incredibly delicious. The rice was as you'd expect (which is good), the naan was tasty and the curried cabbage (can't recall exact name) was incredibly delicious. I cannot speak to dinning in for dinner yet but the staff I interacted with were very nice. The interior was clean and overall I had a good experience. A great addition to East Greenbush. read more

Can't decide if they deserve two or three stars. Beautiful interior, kinda cold staff, great food. However, the shrimp tandoori did not live up to my expectations, we usually go to Shalimar in Delmar so I'm spoiled. It seemed like the air conditioner was on. The sole server, who was also the host, the bus boy, phone answerer, and Grub Hub and take out guy contact. He was so busy doing everything else he never came to check on us. We needed to ask for any extras like a to go box, drink refills and to add on garlic naan (which was yummy.) He never asked if we were done and brought the check over without us asking for one and without a word. There were three other tables occupied when we left. In all, we will do take out at this place. I'll need to find something new to eat or ask my husband to go to Shalimar. read more

I was told by the man at the counter that the next time I wanted to order, to pick up the phone, as they get charged a fee for using this system! Tried take out from this restaurant last week. The food was excellent, staff was friendly. I would have given them 5 stars, but I thought they were skimpy on the amount of meat they gave you. We had chicken tika masala and lamb do piazza. There were 6 pieces of meat in each container then filled to the top with sauce. It took 40 minutes to get our pick-up order, which was only one dish and some naan. The Na'an was burned and fell apart, and there was a disgusting pool of grease on top of the food (a dish I've gotten many times from many places- it is not supposed to be like that). I hope they get things together and improve, since it's the only Indian food for miles. read more

I'm upgrading my review of the Masala house. Since my one visit to his new restaurant, I've availed myself of their take-out service twice. I cannot comment on service issues I raised in my earlier review, but I can say that two of the food critisism's I raised in my earlier review seem to have been addressed. First, there was a definite improvement to the onion naan this time around. The naan was much more flavorful and this time, full of onions. A major improvement. We also found the tandoori chicken improved and more aggressively flavored. The serving size was very generous for the price. Finally, I think the samosa's the Masala house serves are some of the best I've had. So, I'm bumping them up a star. I hope they continue to improve; as I'm glad to have them in the neighborhood! read more
