This is the real deal when it comes to Thai food. Don't expect much in regard to ambiance (in fact in the future I will call ahead so it's ready when I arrive), but expect much in regard to flavor. We visited around 5:30 on a Friday. Walked up to the counter, looked over the menu, and placed our order. The woman working the counter was quick and efficient, but maintained a friendly demeanor. After we ordered the phone rang pretty much non-stop and there was a steady stream of people for take out. It's clearly the place to be. Now for the food. The coconut soup was top notch; creamy and sweet with just a bit of kick. The Chilli Thai Basil Leaf Chicken was on point. It had two peppers for a spice rating (the highest was three); there was just enough kick (at least for me). We also ordered the Pad Thai. It was okay, but a little too sweet for my taste. I rarely leave reviews but have to congratulate Masaman's Pineapple Chicken Jasmine Fried Rice. BEST fried rice in Birmingham. Service is also quick and everyone is so friendly too. Consistent top notch quality. 11/10. I used to love Surin's fried rice the best, but Masaman blows that out of the park, for comparison. Also, I'm no "food expert" by any means haha, but I did live in Thailand a few years back and Masaman reminds me of one of my favorite places I ate there. BE WARNED!!! The hot pepper ratings provided on the menu are accurate!! Two peppers menu items come at you swinging! Tons of amazing flavor, but there is a heat infused punch to the senses. I love spicy food and I love it even more when it's done well. Meaning has some flavor to it as well, not just an overload of heat and no flavor. The seating area is very small so be prepared to go to an early lunch or dinner if you want to eat there. They have eight tables with 2 chairs at each. Very limited seating, but it looks like they are well equipped for take out orders. Several people came in and grabbed theirs to go. I had the Spicy Beef Salad. Included with the order is white rice and coconut soup. Coconut soup was on par with any of the other places I have had it. Went here a few times, and while I'm generally not a big fan of Thai food, I will say that everything I've had here has been pretty good. Got the green curry the first time, and the masaman curry the second time. Good lunch spot, quick service, very nice staff, and fairly inexpensive. For me, with these sorts of dishes, it really comes down to how well prepared the protein is. I can say that in both instances the chicken that I got was tender and delicious and able to be cut easily with a plastic fork. No gristly bits, no big chunks of fat. Both the green curry and the masaman sauces were flavorful and clung well to the chicken. I'll be back again for sure. read more

I have been meaning to try this place for a while. I have seen the reviews and pictured it in my mind. What I came across as far as ambiance was totally different than what is in my mind. But the food hit that high expectation well! We walked in and saw a sign about carry out only and no dine in. But when we went to order, they asked if we wanted to dine there. So a little confused on that. I am very familiar with this shopping center since we lived just a couple of miles away. So now knowing the location, I'm sure I would have pictured the much smaller dining area before my visit. The staff was exceptionally friendly and very interested in making sure that we enjoyed everything. We got the Thai egg rolls, pad thai, and chicken curry (masaman). All things that we really enjoy at other Thai places. Everything we had was better than our typical Thai carry out spot. Making us wish these were scattered at various spots around Birmingham too. The place is hidden in this plaza in Vestavia Hills. The food is amazing. You can select your spice level. We got the shrimp coconut soup which was so good. The Panang shrimp was just as tasty and one of the beat I've had in Birmingham. The shrimp noodles were also very good. The serving size is quite large. It's a must try place. read more

I went to this restaurant with my family. I'm not a fan of Thai food in Birmingham. However this is where my family wanted to go. An authentic Thai dish that I have always loved is Moo Tod. I have always requested this dish at five restaurants to see how authentic they are. This was the first Birmingham Thai restaurant in 20 years that knew what I was requesting. I ordered the Chili Eggplant. The other members of my Family ordered the Pad Siew and Massaman Curry. The waitress was great. She got our drinks out quickly and the food came out steaming hot. Once we had allowed them to cool and dressed them up as we liked we dug in. All I can say is "Fantastic". My dinner was excellent the eggplant was cooked perfectly and the flavour of it all was great. The sauce was not watery but thick and rich. I also sampled the other dishes and they too tasted wonderful. I am definitely going back to chow down on some Massaman Curry. I loved it. read more

With its newly expanded (and tastefully decorated) dining space, I'm going to go ahead and declare MTK as my favorite Thai place in town. Everything I've had here has been excellent, with the tempura green beans, panang curry, and pad see ew being the clear frontrunners for me. The recent addition of sushi to the menu is what places this restaurant over the top. Their Double Super Crunch roll puts its original namesake to shame. It's larger, fresher, and on Wednesdays, all their sushi rolls are $8, all day. Try it. Don't let this gem fall victim to the Curse of the Vestavia Publix shopping center. read more

The staff would walk around and ask if the customers are doing okay and whether the food is satisfactory. Not very typical for take out restaurants, but it was very sweet of them to do so. Interior: Simple and clean decor. The restaurant is small and can hold up to about 15 guests. There are tables and chairs available if customers want to stay to dine in. Portions: Lunch specials are designed for one person and will definitely fill you up! These come with the entree, rice, and coconut tofu soup. Masaman Chicken (lunch special): Delicious and quite fresh. This curry-like dish has chunks of carrots and chicken slices smothered with the sauce. There were also 3 thinly sliced avocado and plenty of cashews on top as garnish, which makes the dish extra colorful. The sauce is very flavorful and has a very small hint of spicy to it. Pot stickers with panang sauce: Perfect pairing with the sauce. Coconut tofu soup: It's different from other coconut soups that I have tried before. It's a bit less flavorful, but still pretty good. Tofu on pad thai: I did not try the pad thai but I did get a taste of the tofu. It was nicely fried and seasoned very well. The tofu tasted sweet and savory, a taste that I have not tried before. It was satisfying. It was my first time here and now on my list of favorites from Birmingham. read more

These people are amazingly nice, they put a lot love and care into making your food and genuinely care about their customers. They even checked with me at the end of my meal regarding how the food was. So that is the primary reason why they get 2 stars from me and not 1. The group I was with seemed to enjoy their food (although they don't eat Thai food very much) and did not have any major complaints (except for the guy who also ordered the same thing I did but with tofu). So here is the bad part: I eat a lot of Thai food. Pretty much everywhere I travel I try to at least have 1 Thai meal and also probably average 1 Thai meal per week in my hometown. I ordered the Pad Thai with Chicken, primarily because the other Yelp reviews seemed to have recommended this and also I figured it is hard to mess up Pad Thai. But the problem is, the Pad Thai I got was probably one of the worst Pad Thais I have eaten. On a scale of 1 to 10 (with 10 being the best), I would give this Pad Thai a 2. 1. Biggest problem was the flavoring of the noodles. I have never tasted so much sugar and sweetness in a Pad Thai before. It was not a tad sweet, but overly sweet. Everyone at my table who sampled my dish had the same feedback, the noodles tasted like they were tossed in a sugary syrup (killing any flavor of the dish). Another guy in my group also ordered a Pad Thai but with tofu, his was just as sweet and sugary. 2. The chicken in the Pad Thai was very bland and flavorless. It tasted like it came from a frozen package of chicken breasts and was not seasoned at all. Tasted like they cooked it separately without any flavoring and then just tossed it into the noodles. I've had Pad Thai all over the U.S. at probably some of the most popular and highly rated Thai restaurants. Never have I had it this sweet and syrupy to where it drowned out any potential flavoring/taste of the dish. The bland frozen chicken just made it even worse. Maybe they accidentally dumped too much of one ingredient into the Pad Thai? I will never know. Someone else at my table ordered the Pad Ke Mao (Kee Mow) and that tasted fine. My recommendation is just don't order the Pad Thai. For $10.99 it definitely wasn't worth it. read more

The pad thai is on the sweet side I guess to cater to an American audience so if that's not your thing, stick to the curries. The spice level is authentic so go with mild or one chili if you can't handle it. However, this is more of takeout place. Seating inside is super limited and is always very packed. You can manage to dine in but realize this is a no frills place and isn't like Surin or Taste of Thailand. This is a strip mall location but with that level of quality minus the price. One of the better lunch specials in the greater Bham area! I've been to Masaman Thai about three times now -- twice for lunch and once for takeout. It's counter-style with a self-serve drink machine, but on all occasions, the cashiers who took our orders were very friendly, took down our requests effortlessly, and courteously checked on us. For the lunch special, ~$8 gets you a cup of their delicious coconut tofu soup and a sizable portion of your favorite Thai delicacy. The pad thai doesn't have any veggies in it besides bean sprouts, but the blend of flavors is quite good - similar to Blue Pacific's. Masaman's spicy basil is even more delicious. When my fiance ordered it last week, I was amazed by the number of veggies on the plate. The decor has nice touches in places (shiplap siding on one of the counters, a few large but unobtrusive TVs quietly playing in the background) and is simple in others (such as the laminated plywood booth on the far side). If you're looking for a fast, laid back, and tasty meal in Vestavia, I'd recommend checking Masaman out. read more

The curry came with two scoops of steamed rice and each entrée came with a cup of coconut soup. Everything was delicious, fragrant and spicy.
