Magnificent appearance on the exterior and interior. Just off the Cass Corridor not too far from downtown, the building stands alone like a castle. The mid-size seating capacity (about) makes it an ideal venue for musicals (I've seen Hairspray here) and concerts in a specific genre. Did the 2 1/2 hour tour on 1//19/20. So much to see yet the tour is long. Perhaps having separate tours, one that speaks about the Masons and one that is about the building would help (as there are so many rooms). We had three guides, which helped with the large group and with answering questions. The primary guide we had could have used tact when "correcting" a person on the tour. The guide proceeded to speak out at the end of the tour to a person on stage with "if you can't see me, I can't see you and there are items on stage not to be touched. I wouldn't want to kick you out of the tour at the very end". It was demeaning to whoever the person was and I felt a bit of a power play in the word chosen. The docent then proceeded to talk down to the other docents in front of the tour group. The other Master Masons where wonderful. read more

I went here for Pottercon yesterday and this place is beyond beautiful. It felt like walking into Hogwarts.. for the most part, no floating chandeliers sadly. I did some research prior (clearly) and found out it has over 1,000 rooms, was finished in 1922 and still has many architectural details from the period-- a marble shoe shine station in one of the Women bathrooms, a bronze handle to flush, antique water (drinking) fountains, etc. My sister and I snuck into the basement and it was pretty creepy too. Awesome venue been here a for a few concerts and comedy shows, most recently a Snoop Dogg concert. It was a typical Snoop Concert very smokey. The venue is nice the artwork in the main hall is very eclectic. The bathrooms are old but ok I get tired of the bathroom attendants but I guess they keep the bathrooms cleaned up and free from a lot of paper everywhere.Parking in cheaper than other similar Venus ie: The Fox, Fillmore etc. read more

The bar charges a fair price, and you get a good pour, not just ice like some places. There were ushers to help find your seats, and they were very pleasant. Saw Volbeat at the Masonic and had an overall good experience. Some weird things happened though that I have never experienced at other venues in Detroit. First, as other reviews have noted, they had us stand outside in two main lines wrapping around either side of the building. It was very confusing and people had no idea where to go. The Masonic is in one of the most crime ridden and dilapidated areas of Detroit too, so there are people hanging around that you do not want to be near, especially the further you get away from the doors. Even though doors were supposed to be at 7, they had us out there at least until 7:20 before the line started moving up. People got pretty impatient. Once at the doors, security separated everyone by gender so it split up groups and really confused everybody. I mean, really, what century are we in? They patted all of us down. Pretty strict security. My group was up in the balcony and, even though we are intelligent human beings who can find our seats and count numbers, the usher insisted that we follow him. He looked at our tickets and said, "Oh, those are good tipping seats." I didn't understand him and took my seat and he awkwardly stood around kind of looking at the floor. I was confused and just ignored him until he went away. I didn't realize what he wanted until much later. You simply don't tip the usher at a rock concert. This was not the opera. I was going to tip him later on because I felt bad, but then he led another group of people down our aisle during the middle of the first song. Inexcusable. He lost out... Otherwise, the venue is beautiful, maybe a little rough around the edges but breathtaking. Sound is phenomenal, parking is nearby and cheap. The Masonic Temple has to be one of the worst venues I have ever been to. First off it was my kids birthday(12 yrs old) he was super excited to see the comedian fluffy. Called the box office to see if there was an age limit just in case.. the woman I spoke to said it had a 16 or old age limit for the event. When we get there, which I might add we had to walk two miles because there is absolutely no parking followed by waiting in a line for 40 minutes just to get in.. there are a ton of lil kids there of the age of 12 and younger.. totally ruined my son's birthday. Then when we finally get to our seats it's so packed and compact, it has to be easily an uncomfortable 95°+.. and guess what.. the concession stands run out of water.. needless to say, the show was amazing.. the venue nearly made it unbearable.. The only positive thing I have to say about this place is it is stunningly beautiful inside...now I am reviewing the masonic temple in terms of music venue not for weddings or any other type of event.... When I recently went to the Masonic for the Erykah Badu concert (2/16/13) concert...from start to finish it was a disaster.....not sure who was in charge of the show but I am just appalled at the lack of respect from the workers. We had very good seats 6th row to the left side of stage.....somehow a pair of bums (lady and man) managed to sneak their way inside the venue and even up front to try and take peoples seats if they where not sitting there...making noises, being so rude and it was clear to everyone around them what was going on....the man was hopping from seat to seat while the lady clearly high on something was laughing hysterically at him from her stolen seat...at one point the man sat right behind us and started eating left over pizza he found over my boyfriends head!!!!!!!!!...... I must add my boyfriend has NO tolerance for ignorant people like this but I beggeddddddddd him to not start a scene as I wanted to enjoy the show....he obeyed my wishes to not beat the crap out of that man...but we just could not believe there was not ONE worker who was around to escort these people out...finally when the women whose seat he was sitting in came back, the couple disappeared...for a while anyways... The show started (2 hours late) regardless it was a great show as EB always performs well...but my boyfriend needed to go to the bathroom...so as soon he left.....sure enough...here pops that rude a** MF and sits down in my boyfriends seat.......I kindly asked him to please leave as he DID NOT WORK HARD FOR THIS TICKET as I could guarantee most people attending the show have...but he would not budge.....I warned him if my boyfriend came back to see him sitting there, he was going to get his face blown out...in fact after I kept asking him to please leave he started yelling at me telling me to calm down because "when my people come, he would leave" UMM EXCUSE ME????? I was SOOO ANGRY at this point and told him to get away from me NOW, I don't know him or want him sitting next to me....he wouldn't budge in fact he put his hands up to my face sort of "as if" AT THIS POINT I COULD NOT BELIEVE THIS WAS GOING ON ALMOST FRONT ROW AND NOT ONE PERSON DID A THING....not one security person was around, I was just appalled...finally I grabbed my stuff and stormed out...I found 2 young workers outside the hallway and told them what was going on... well...they where so young, immature and stoned out of their mind all they did was look at me and LAUGH, and say "uhhh...uhhh.....let me find some..one....uhhhh..." They where clearly right out of high school with no pride in their job...I was LIVID, I found 2 older security men who jumped at the scene of me flipping out,asking me what happened.....as we started walking back in to find the guy who was going around stealing seats, he came running out with his lady in crime and they started to escort him out.... the lady was screaming in my face telling me I didn't need to react that way...she was ghetto, incompetent and it was just disgusting....as she was screaming in my face my boyfriend came out of the bathroom and seen me upset and FLIPPED OUT on everyone.....he was ready to brawl...I knew if my boyfriend lost his cool this was going to end in someone going to the hospital and my bf would be in jail.....it was such a disaster.....thank god my boyfriend listened to me when I kept telling him they weren't worth it.....it took about 2 minutes for everything to calm down but jesus......all this could have been avoided if there where workers doing their jobs and not letting these people down there...it was not very busy up front so there is no excuse as to how or why they got through... Now I must add, we are not a white suburbia couple who only comes down to Detroit for events..my boyfriend owns 2 companies that are in Detroit and he's lived in Detroit on and off his whole life and I've been going down to Detroit since I could remember with my family. We were married on August 8th, of 2010. We had our ceremony in the chapel and our reception in the Crystal Ballroom all within the Masonic Temple. Some may say this place is expensive but after doing some comparison shopping I believe most people will find that this place is extremely affordable for a medium sized budget (admitting that a medium sized wedding budget is an outrageous budget by any other standard). Also, we had our wedding on Sunday which saved us a huge amount of money and worked very well for everyone. Now, Dorothy runs everything at the Masonic and she is simply amazing. She provides great advice and you can trust her staff to deftly handle every aspect of your wedding that you are comfortable handing over. The chapel is beautiful and provides great acoustics. We had a cello and violin player which sat in the upper balcony without any microphones and were able to fill the chapel with a great, rich sound. Moving to the reception via elevators was super easy, which was a concern for some of our older family members and friends. The ballroom is said to be the oldest standing ballroom in Michigan and NEEDS ALMOST NO DECORATIONS TO LOOK ABSOLUTELY STUNNING. The most surprising thing about our wedding was the food. We went to the tasting and quite honestly were not that impressed with what we tasted. My wife and I originally tasted some of the more unique items from the menu and only found one item we really liked, the coconut chicken tenders. As such, we decided to ask for some of the more simple foods for our wedding and hope for the best. To our surprise on the big day EVERYONE LOVED THE FOOD! My wife and I enjoyed it very much but we had about 10 minutes to eat and didn't really get to appreciate it but all night people kept coming up to us to rave about the food. My advice is to keep it simple and prepare for the compliments! Most people stayed at the Motor City Casino, which thoroughly impressed the out-of-towners, and is extremely close by which I would also highly recommend. Planning a wedding is a HUGE endeavor but having it at the Masonic and working with Dorothy is one sure way to make sure it all goes wonderfully. read more

First and foremost, this is not a good venue for concerts. I have attended concerts in various venues around the US, but have never experienced any thing as disorganized as the Young Jeezy concert on 12/28! The lines to enter stretched across the street and down the sidewalk quite a ways. There were two lines, but, there was no indication of which line was for will call, and which was for those purchasing tickets. Once close to the door, we could tell the concert already begun. THEN. There was the stampede to enter through a single door. When I say a single door, I mean: there was a set of double doors, and only one of the two was opened to let concert goers in. This caused a near catastrophic event, and in the process, my bracelet was ripped off my wrist. The structure is nice and the seats were not bad, however, staff working these events need to be more organized and respectful of the people paying their money. To say that female patrons would not be allowed to carry purses is asinine. What's more ludicrious is having them throw away hair spray or body spray that may be inside said handbag or purse, before allowing them to proceed. I understand that at these types of events safety can be an issue, but don't penalize an entire group of individuals on the basis of a transgression that has yet to occur. Again, I did enjoy the concert, I just did not appreciate the forced intermission used to clear the center aisle. Those people had been standing there throughout the previous two acts, so I was really irritated by security taking performance time from the headliner to address that. Better organization and staff are key to putting on a stellar concert here. read more

Worse venue ever! I don't care how beautiful this place is it's not worth the time, cold and energy. Waited 1 hr to get in, 2 lines wrapped around the temple in 20 degree weather. I was better off paying a swatter to wait in line for me. And once we got closer a staff member stopped us from crossing the wind tunnel...what do you mean there's a wind tunnel?! Lol so horrible! Came here from Cleveland to see Lana del Rey. Never experienced such an unorganized concert event. Stood in the freezing cold for over 2 hours. Got into the event an hour after the event started. Mind you, I was In line before the doors opened. Got in because they started giving away upgraded balcony seats Bc the general admission ticket lines were still wrapped around the building. No security or anything...didn't even have to prove I had tickets. How safe. Will never come back for a concert here. What a disaster. :( read more

Purchased tickets for Lauren Daigle and attended the concert. They should NEVER sell the tickets they did. Balcony against the wall where I spent the whole evening staring at a pillar. Also not to mention that the acoustics were so bad that from our seats every song she sang and every word she spoke we couldn't understand. The acoustics made it sound muffled. Attended Masonic temple to see the comedian Lavell Crawford. Ok, let's start from the beginning, show started at 630pm, we arrived between 6:30-6:45pm. There was a long line of people waiting to go inside building. It's winter time people and past the show time, why is there a line to get in the building? There are 2 parking structures directly across from theater. However, be prepared to pay $20 dollars to park. Allowed to enter about 730, and please don't wait outside in the cold, just sit in your car and wait for the building open, you have tickets. While watching Levell Crawford, a comedian, that kept us in stitches during his entire 90 minute+ set which laced in so many spontaneous, hollarious life experiences, it would be futile to describe. Levell should be experienced by all those who want to be emersed in laughter to tears. Oh yeah...the venue is one of Detroit's gems...catch a show for yourself. For my suburban neighbors: parking is ample and secured. The venue is museum-like and the architecture of the ceiling is breathtaking. Worth the short trip. Masonic Temple - Standing by before the show... - Venues & Event Spaces Near Me - Detroit, Michigan

I've been to 3 concerts here, so I've had a chance to see whether my experiences are standard for this venue and if I should expect more of the same if I return. Like many have said, it's a beautiful venue which adds to the overall experience, but in the end you're there to enjoy and hear the concert. The seats are pretty comfortable, and the view is good if everyone remains seated, if not, prepare to stand all night, like the last concert I just attended. The downside things - the seats aren't marked very well and once the lights go down, good luck getting around to the bathroom or for a drink. There is also a step down into the seat rows in several rows that is a real hazard even in the light. Drinks - you can buy alcohol but the lines are insane. 2 cashiers waiting on dozens of people. What kind of system is that? Drink prices weren't bad, but the glasses were small and filled to the top with no lid, again, navigating in the dark with 2 full glasses in hand led to some spillage. Bathrooms - pretty good # of stalls, but an annoying bathroom attendant. I don't need someone to squirt soap into my hand or tell me what stall to go into, I've been going to the bathroom by myself for decades, I can figure it out. Parking is a challenge in the area, it's not a good area so you'll probably want to use a pay lot, so be prepared for an extra $10 and up to park. Like others have mentioned, there didn't seem to be any security inside the theater part, but there are plenty if you go out into the lobby and concourse areas, of course many I saw were very elderly and women, not sure how helpful they would be if needed. I'd probably go back if someone was there that I really wanted to see and the price was right, but probably only in the summer. I would leave zero stars for this place if it was possible. I've been an avid concert-goer since I was a 14 year old and I have never been to a worse venue IN MY LIFE. The ticket buying process is so confusing for starters. Paid $70 to for "GA lower level" tickets which apparently doesn't mean floor tickets. Tried all night to get down to the floor and no one had any idea how we could do that. Been here three times and NEVER EVER GOING BACK. Security is rude. read more

I was so scared that the Sufjan show would suck because of what I read from the past reviews (free Lana Del Rey show!!). However, the venue was wonderful and the show was even better. Probably the suckiest thing was the 20$ parking, but I get it. We got there about 45 minutes before "doors opened at 8", and luckily they were already letting people in. Everyone got in smoothly. Staff was very helpful in terms of directions and finding our seats. Even had bathroom attendants. Classy. The sound and lighting was top notch, and it was a great night for everyone. read more

I had my wedding ceremony here, and it was wonderful. It is a great place to get married. They are very flexible and willing to accommodate any special request you may have, and they are a lot less expensive than other venues in the area. They actually offer a lot more than what's listed on their website (and it's free of charge). They will even put you and your fiance's names on the sign in front of The Masonic if they do not have any other events going on at the time of your wedding. Dorothy, the event coordinator was very helpful and easy to work with. The only issues I had were that the fish dish did not taste nearly as good at dinner as it did during our tasting, and there was some confusion about when and how to serve dessert, but otherwise everything else about the venue was great. read more

This venue consistently oversells concerts. I recently attendes Rezz and I had purchased the top tier tickets for pit entrance. This venue had run out of wristbands for entrance into to the pit and we weren't allowed admittance due to this. I am very displeased. I called to speak to someone at the box office and they were very rude. This was one of the most unpleasant experiences. read more

I have to note that I saw Aziz Ansari at the Masonic a few weeks ago, and while the process was better, there were still some major issues with getting people to their seats. They had everyone line up in the tiny hallways outside the theater based on which row their seats were in. The line for every section was horrible, with what looked like at least 100 people in each. It was so backed up because you weren't allowed to find your own seats. There were two people per line that would take you to your seats. It took a long time to get everyone in, and I missed most of the opening act because of it. I had two other groups of friends sitting in other sections. One of the groups didn't see the opening act at all and missed the first few minutes of Aziz. The other group missed the first few minutes of Aziz as well. And while you might be thinking "at least this ensures that everyone sits in the correct seat," you, my friend, are wrong. They sat people in my second group of friends' seats, and their only solution was to find them different seats. My friends were pissed that they already missed a few minutes of the show and complained, so the usher made the people get out of their seats (they had really good seats, and I'm sure the seats they would have offered were not as good). This made everyone else in the row pissed off that they all had to move to get my friends to their seats, but none of this would have happened if the Masonic could just hire more people or let people find their own seats. Seriously, we're paying good money for each of these events, so I don't understand why the Masonic can't staff them accordingly to allow people to enjoy their night and not have to deal with an issue for every single show. read more

Well, Detroit kind of has a theater district. Think Cleveland's theater district and take a step down. BUT, the theaters themselves are beautiful pieces of architecture, which maybe give you an idea of how Detroit may have been in the 30's. Most national touring plays and musicals make their way here or to the Fisher Theater when they come to Detroit. I've been to two concerts here, and the building is gorgeous! It's also easy to park and easy to get on and off the freeway. Staff is friendly, but unfortunately terribly disorganized. You are put in line after line and are often told once you arrive to the front of the line, where one person told you to be, that you were supposed to be somewhere else. Sections do not clearly translate to what is on your tickets, so it's confusing to figure out where you are supposed to be. They have one usher per section, seating people one at a time, so the line to even get seated wraps around the halls mixed in with drink lines and bathroom lines. When leaving we were ushered out one way, only to find those doors were locked and we could not get out. This could have been a real death trap if there was any sort of emergency. Understandably the building is almost 100 years old, so hallways are narrow and exits are limited, but a better crowd management strategy needs to be addressed before something tragic happens. read more

Me and a few of my friends came here to see all time low on August 7 and it was an extremely stressful and frustrating experience. Honestly the worst service I've ever experienced at a venue. The security was rude and unhelpful. I was pushed twice by one of them and I didn't even do anything wrong, I was just in his way. And no one knew what section they were supposed to be in. I paid for GA floor, paid extra for early entry, waited 3 hours outside, only to be told I had to stay in a seat. There was no indication that the tickets were split between "pit" and "floor." It was an All Time Low concert so fans were not happy about this. A good amount of people ended up getting away with jumping the barrier between the seats and the pit, which gives you an idea of how terrible security was. Never going to that venue again. read more

Wow am I disappointed. We put together a Christmas present for our Parents that included a Tour of the Masonic and Dinner out in Detroit. We booked the date Months in advance so that we could coordinate schedules (parents are retired and spend most of their time in warmer climates). Called today to verify and they said "Oops!" The person who took our reservation didn't write it down and now they have a huge private party booked on that day. PATHETIC. So glad that our present has been obliterated by underachieving idiots. I've been here many times for various different concerts. I am used to being treated like somewhat of a scumbag while attending shows like Bassnectar and Grizmas. I'm certainly not condoning it, but am not surprised by less than enthused workers. However, I definitely expected more when I went there for my brothers wedding. The venue was beautiful as always but I literally had a lady roll her eyes and mutter something under her breath because I wasn't done eating yet and didn't want her to take my plate. Since it was such a big deal to her I just told her to take the plate so she could stop pouting and decided to move on with the night. We discovered there wasn't very good cell phone service where the reception was at so we asked one of the workers for the wifi password. Most places just give you the wifi password when you spend thousands of dollars there, but instead the workers literally wouldn't give us the password unless we paid them money. The icing on the cake was that they still wouldn't give us the password, they just typed it into the phone of the person they extorted money out of. read more

Oh if I could rate this dump ZERO stars I would in a heartbeat. I already know they don't care about reviews but I'm too pissed to care. This is the worst venue in Metro Detroit by ANY and ALL standards. It doesn't matter if you are attending a comedy show or a concert, if you have assigned seating or general admission; you are 100% guaranteed to have a bad time. The security here is beyond ridiculous and completely unreasonable. I'm talking metal detectors and pat downs. I don't know of any other venue (even in Detroit) that has metal detectors. Security staff is extremely rude and seating staff is slow and insufficient. You'll get your ticket checked anytime you attempt to return to your seat after going to the bathroom or getting beer or whatever. There are only 2 seaters per section and this results in obscene lines and paying customers missing half of the performance. If you absolutely must attend, get assigned seats because they're only incrementally more agreeable than general admission. They usually serve a couple varieties from Atwater and that is this shithole's only redeeming quality. read more

The Masonic Temple is pretty historic to Detroit and is used for many things, such as Weddings or Events. I have been a lot in my past to actual Theater pieces, such as the Lion King and Phantom of Opera. The theater is pretty large and definitely architecturally awesome. Lots of people, including myself, love the atmosphere here, which is pretty sophisticated (sometimes a rarity in Detroit). I will say that the parking is a hassle! As of the last time I went, they only had 1 major parking lot. Be prepared to park along side streets and walk!! read more

Went to see Volbeat on Aug 12, 2016. Awesome concert they put on but will never go to masonic theater again.Security was aweful, fights were breaking out on main floor and security was ignoring it as we were begging them for help. There were about 20 cases of bottled water that security was supposed to hand out to us because it was so hot people were about to pass out and only the pretty girls in the front row got some, other people were paying for it and security was taking the money. Doors were supposed to open at 7 pm but opened at 7;20 and they let the people at the back of the line in first. No order in the building and very unsafe place to be. The members of volbeat even seem to get frustrated by the audience actions and fighting that made many comments to stop. read more

I attended the Killers show last night. The show was amazing. The experience at Masonic was terrible. We had floor tickets and arrived while the opening band was performing. Three of us were able to get to the floor but my husband was the told the floor was closed. I tried to talk with the security guard about our problem but he kept yelling in my face that the floor was closed. My husband was finally able to get in after a long wait. None of us could leave to get a drink or go to the bathroom since we were concerned about not being able to get back to the floor. This is the fourth time I have seen this group and I have been to a ton of other shows where I am on the floor. However I have never been treated so rudely by security or not been able to get on and off the floor when I chose to do so. I will think twice about going to this venue again.
