Iconic historical theater. It's gorgeous!Completely run by volunteers--amazing people! Showing movies from all decades. I went and saw The Sandlot, fun movie from my childhood. The concessions are so affordable!! You can't beat the prices! Cash is definitely preferred. Please tip! All money goes towards maintaining the theater. What is not to (mostly) love about the Redford Theatre, especially when it comes to their annual Three Stooges Fest. A sea of middle-aged, boomer, white guys come to this event. I think I was the only Asian girl in the place (and generally everywhere, for that matter, in the midwest), though the theatre has a lot of Asian themes in the architecture. So, I guess I was not TOO out to place. Everyone is warmly welcomed. Anyway, they show a lot of old movies and host live events such as concerts, plays, musicals, etc. Get tickets online to guarantee general seating. Ambiance: They celebrate their centennial birthday in 2027. Lots of beautiful, thoughtful, detailed craftspersonship. Renovations done and ongoing to keep it alive and kicking. You are transported back in time as you walk in, like Cliff Bells in Detroit. Service: All volunteers. This is a non-profit establishment. The staff BELIEVES in magic and making your experience worthwhile. One of the best highlights of this place is the LIVE organ player that entertains and hypes the audience before the show begins. WATCH the player appear from under the stage! It's quite a sight to see and sound to behold. They usually hold a 50-50 raffle. I won a shirt and not money, but the first couple winners won $100! The snack counter has REAL butter for popcorn. This. Is. Worth. Going. And, they have, literally, every kind of candy too. Prices are quite reasonable. Parking: Street, and fenced lot next to the theatre. It gets full quickly, so arrive early. Doors open at least an hour before every show. In all, lovely establishment for an outing to check out. I think what makes this place cool is the people that come to support it -- they are excited to be there. We to see the Sound of Music Singalong. First let me start by saying it is an older theatre it was great. I love it, the tickets were $8 but then you go to get concessions they have all the old candy popcorn big bag was $4, candy was $1.50. It was fast and efficient works who by the way are ALL Volunteers! They have an original old organ with someone playing it before the movie and during intermission, Along with a train village on display that they light up and working before, after the movie and during intermission. The also of people dressed up before the show like someone from the movie itself taking to the audience and during intermission they have a raffle. read more

The Redford Theater is an awesome place to see a movie (and get some great popcorn with REAL BUTTER!). They have lots of great classic movies, and events. I went on this occasion to see the 40th anniversary of The Wrath of Khan and the one and only William Shatner. The place was packed, but the volunteers did as well as could be expected. Bill's Q&A was so entertaining, and his stories were like a roller coaster - you knew where it started, more or less where it was going to end, but the middle and how you got to the end was anyone's guess (including his). The decor is Asian inspired, and they keep things pretty clean. The concessions and gift shop are must stops, but bring cash for that yummy popcorn! My niece is a HUGE Davie Bowie fan. So when it was brought to my attention that A Labyrinth celebration was going on at the Redford Theater, we knew we had to take her! She was so excited! The Goblin King Players were dressed to impress and walking around meeting guests. The audience didn't disappoint with their costumes for the event either. There was a little bit of everything! They held a 50/50 raffle and a costume contest. This was not a shadow cast event but there was a live band there playing all the music. They pulled out all the stops for this event! It was super fun! I'm planning on coming back to see the Hocus Pocus Shadow cast showing. It's one of my favorite movies. I can't wait. My niece must have enjoyed herself because she kept my sister up until 1 am to tell her about it. I am gonna miss this girl when she goes back to college. read more

You really should try and come for the holiday season - they have the most beautiful elaborate trains set up. It's such a nice, affordable family night - tickets are $5 and concessions are very inexpensive. This is a volunteer-run theater, so all concession money goes back to the theater. I was able to see a movie premiere here, where the theater allowed the hosts (movie producers) to provide drinks, cake, and a photographer for the guests for the night. The theater itself is beautiful and exudes a Japanese theme complete with artwork, stage, and ceiling made to imitate a night's sky. The theater popcorn leaves more to be desired (highly artificial and greasy with fake butter), but the prices are cheap, so you ultimately get what you pay for. Candy and soda are also available, as well as sugar-free candy, which I was surprised to find they offered. The theater has balcony seating as well, and for this winter season, they showcased Christmas decorations everywhere, including a Christmas tree and Wintery train models running through a small replica of the area. Overall, it was a well-kept building with interesting events and provided an exciting night to go out and enjoy yourself in a non-conventional theater. read more

I had heard good things about the Redford and even though I realized that movie lovers worship here I still hadn't been. But they and a friend got me here with the 5th annual Noir weekend. 3 days of noir double features. Some shown in 16MM and introduced first with obscure facts or watch for or notice this or that info. It's completely volunteer run and they do it well. Eats are varied and reasonably priced. Oh and it's across the street from Sweet Potato Sensations Parking is attached and there's lots of it and an overflow lot too. They have lots of different movie themes. They don't do first runs or current movies but that's the point. And the organ. It's something to see and don't let the organist get in a boogie woogie or blues mood. I didn't even think it was possible. I enjoyed myself and you should take a look and see if they have a theme that interests you and take some friends to do something different. But talk once the movie starts or check your cell phone and your neighbors may politely check you. But i came to do something different so didn't take offense read more

I just I love this place! Honestly, I don't think I would change anything about it. The staff is always so courteous and made up of volunteers, so it makes me actually feel good about going and supporting this establishment. They show some of the best classics and it's just a cool and cheap spot to go hang out with friends for a couple of hours. I really wish however, that there would be more dining establishments nearby. That could really be a new hotspot in metro Detroit! read more

This theater is GORGEOUS. Honestly, one of the most impressive theaters I've been to in my life (and I'm a movie buff so I've been to many). The theater itself has got an Asian theme to it in it's architecture. Beautiful gold hues and red velvet curtains. Just the way a classic movie theater should look! Upstairs the balcony seats many and has comfortable seating with a fantastic sight line (from now on I will always see a movie here from the balcony). The ceiling is gorgeous...a deep blue sky with sparkling "stars." I could stare at the ceiling all night and be happy. The space is actually pretty huge. I think it seats around 1,500 people which is pretty massive. I was last here for their screening of "To Kill a Mockingbird." It was a special occasion as they had brought in Mary Badham who played Scout in the film (and was Oscar nominated for the role!). They had done a lot of fantastic promo so the Saturday night showing boasted a crowd of 1,100! The largest audience they've had since the 1980s. So great for them! The entire staff is volunteer run which is really impressive. Everyone who works here does it because they love the theater and film. They're just so passionate about what they do and what they bring in. Like the Mockingbird event. They don't do celebrity guests often but when they do, they go all out. It was a fabulous experience. Also--CHEAP. Movie tickets are $4 typically. Popcorn, soda and candy is a steal compared to chain movie theaters. And the popcorn is really good, with real, honest to God, butter to serve on top. It's almost embarrassing for other movie theaters when you think about how much the jack up the prices and still don't serve as good of a product and experience as the Redford Theater. Of course they only show classics (every other weekend of the month on Fridays and Saturdays) so you won't catch any new films here but that's part of the appeal and beauty of this theater. What a beautiful building! I love the feel of this place, and can imagine what it must have been like during the days when theaters were new to society and were considered an 'event'. I was there for a movie premier, complete with red carpet and all. The evening was semi-formal and it was nice to get dressed up and go to the theater. I imagine it was reminiscent of times past, and I was thrilled to be there. Sadly, because it was a premier for a local movie, the evening didn't follow the normal format and there was no organ music. Also, the sound quality was really bad, but I will not blame the theater for that as I do not know the reason it was bad. It was just off, kind of muffled. I will definitely keep my eye on what is playing, especially around the holidays. I would love to go back and think this theater would be an awesome date night outing! read more

The Redford theater is an old theater that is keeping up with the times. They bring in old films or classic films and play them on par with the seasons. In the mood for something scary or traditional around Halloween or Christmas? Their schedule will have classics like Young Frankenstein, Evil Dead, Miracle on 34th Street, or A Christmas Story with some of the actor's. Love The Three Stooges, or remember when your parents or grandparents used to watch them? They have that too. Charlie Chaplin? Check. Singing in the Rain? Check. Movies you always wanted to check out on the big screen but never got a chance? Yeah they'll have that too. They also have an organ player that sets the whole mood and reminds you of the theaters rich history. They will sell merchandise for the movies that you won't be able to find anywhere else. Think old school movie posters printed on a t-shirt of your size and color choice. That is so cool. The Redford is also operated by volunteers. Everybody that you see is donating their time because they want you to experience what they love in the theater. That's just good people and good business. The concessions are super inexpensive, because they don't have to pay royalties to Hollywood to rent their reels. That is also cool. A one or two dollar bag of popcorn will certainly sit well with me. The historic Redford Theater is a gem. An absolute classic to be honest with you. The detail, the colors, the work that is put into keeping this facility as top notch as it is... is amazing. And yet, a ticket to a movie costs.... $4. How in the world could that be? Its because all of the concessions fund everything, and through donations from wonderful patrons... they make sure everything is as good as it could be. Popcorn is popped fresh right then and there, they use real butter, and concession prices are DIRT cheap!!! Make sure to get into the 50/50 raffle too! The one thing that really makes me happy, is that the beginning of the movie... a giant United State Flag is shown.. Everyone... repeat... EVERYONE... stands up and says the pledge of allegiance. Call me proud of our country, call me whatever. It just makes me happy. I'm just hoping that one day they bring back Braveheart so I can see it on the big screen. :) read more

This is the coolest theater ever! It kind of feels like you've gone back in time when you go. I love that they show old movies, and I think they've got a pretty good selection. They take suggestions for movies as well. I love the organ during intermission - you don't get that at any other theater! I am so happy to be going to the Redford Theatre again. The first movie I ever saw was in this theatre. And my mom used to give my brother, sister and I money to walk to the theatre when were we a little older and we would watch the double feature, all the cartoons and then walk home again. I'm sure it was a cheap way to get 3 out of 4 kids out of the house on a Saturday! Coming back as an adult is a small piece of deja vu that hits as soon as you walk in the building. Thanks for a little slice of my childhood. I'll be back soon for another movie. (And for those that say it's old movies - think of it this way, if you haven't seen the movie before, it's not old. This is my second time attending Redfordd Theatre... OMG I love the structure of this building. It's a little chilly in there, so make sure to have a light jacket or maybe even bring a small blanket. I don't care if they are showing new or old movies but you can bet $4 a show. I would highly suggest if you are bring a lot of kids, then to maybe bring in your on snacks but if you are solo, then you can buy from the stand. All funds goes back to the building to keep up maintance. Please note -- CASH ONLY!!! (I would have given 5 stars if they accepted plastic) I was lucky enough where someone purchase my popcorn/drink because I only had plastic... I prefect stranger which I give a BIG huge too! (it's surprised her a little but it's the little things that count) So enjoy the show and support REDFORD!!!! read more

Full disclosure demands that I mention that my parents volunteer here, so as to avoid too much abuse I grant it 5 stars. Without a doubt though, the price of concessions is the best you are going to find in a movie theater. I need to ask if they just sell them at cost, because this might be one case where its cheaper to buy them here than to just sneak in your own. The sound system (as of this review) may not be completely up to par, but they have to pay for that stuff out of the theater budget, instead of having a big corporate office pay for it. Fortunately most of the older movies they play are in Mono, or don't require a lot of Surround Sound. The seats are also a bit vintage, so if you are one of those people whose butt gets sore after a bit of sitting in the theater, you'll probably have that problem here too.. Just fair warning. If you are looking for a great "old theater" experience to see a great older movie this is absolutely the place you want to see it. My parents put a great deal of heart and soul into the volunteer work they do here, and I know they aren't the only ones! Even if you should discount my review because of my bias, I think you'll find enough other Yelp reviews fully in favor of visiting the Redford read more

Saw JAWS here. Well kept place. Staff is very friendly. Let me repeat that....staff is very friendly. I will visit again and will mention it to friends with hope they visit as well. We sat in the balcony for the first half then after intermission we sat on the main floor. Both gave a very good view of the screen. Restrooms were clean. read more

Been here a lot over the lady few years. I live they show movies I missed in theaters. Most were new when I was a kid or before I was born but a good movie is a good movie . We just saw Indiana Jones and Raiders of the lost ark. Wow..just wow. One of my all time favorites in the big screen!! We came last year and saw Evil Dead around Halloween. That was a super cool experience too. I always feel safe and popcorn/drinks are MUCH cheaper than any other place. So glad I found this place!! read more

Very unique classic film theater in the former downtown Redford that was annexed by Detroit in the twenties. I first came to the Redford with my good buddy back in 1994. We used to go frequently. Back then, it was a fledgling theater trying to bring people in. In serious disrepair, there was no one in the balcony in those days. Most of the attendees were old people at the time. As I recall, we saw High Noon. The theater is owned by the Motor City Theater Organ Society with overtures preshow and during intermissions. Movie tickets are around 4 bucks depending on the show. They play Fridays and Saturdays about every other weekend with some matinees. The staff is all volunteer. Candy and pop were 1 dollar for years but that has changed slightly. Still, one of the best values ever and one of a kind to the classic film lover. Even if you've seen the film, go for the experience. The Redford was built in the late twenties as an Exotic Revival style with with many deco and midcentury accents that have been added over the years during several mini remodels. The lobby has been completely rehabbed and the balcony seats were replaced with period repro seating. The interior features a Japanese-Asian Dynasty theme in Red and Gold accents. The ceiling is painted in sky blue with faint white clouds, little white stars "twinkle" throughout the show. In December of 2000, Carolyn Grimes who played Zuzu in Its a Wonderful Life made an appearance and spoke of her time working on the film as a child actress (she would've been 6 or 7 at the time). During her part when she was in bed sick, the audience cheered loudly! That was very memorable. When Charade played and Cary Grant's character Brian Crookshank admits to Audrey Hepburn that his mother lives in Detroit, the audience exploded in applause. When artist Prince passed away, the theater did a special impromptu feature of Purple Rain. The theater was packed for several shows that weekend. Tickets can be purchased at the door or in advance online via an app. Great place to take a date and if she's not into it, find another date. (It's worth noting that Scotty Simpsons Fish n Chips is only about a mile away-another great classic spot that's been around for 70 years.) read more

AMAZING community treasure nestled into a small neighborhood on the western edge of Detroit. I've been here four times as of this writing and have found each visit to be unique and always classy. Impressive that the complex is run by volunteers, who obviously take considerable care in maintaining the facility and keeping features interesting to the surrounding community. Two of my visits have been for VIP events, which appear to be at least a twice yearly affair at the Redford. Both times, the cinema staff has put together a tasteful tribute, allowing fans to have autographs and a quick meet and greet with the visiting artist, and then they will introduce their film or film(s), with accompanying anecdotes, to the crowd. The cinema always includes an intermission with the feature. Interior has been painstakingly and beautifully renovated to maintain the original architecture and designs. Also features an organist performance that is not to be missed! read more

This beautiful theatre was built in 1828, during silent film era!!! So cool! It has a full stage with fly space for doing actual theater as well. The Japanese artwork that was painted over during WWII and the beautifully decorated gold organ have been fully restored by volunteers, and the seats have been newly covered with a pretty turquoise velvet! It's just $5 to see a film on the enormous 20 foot x 40 foot screen! The place was almost full (and there are 1661 seats, including the beautiful balcony seats!) for the last showing of Casablanca this year (it's the theater's 90 year anniversary and Casablanca's 75 year anniversary!!!). The crowd thoroughly enjoyed the film, laughing in unison at the classically comic lines while the blue ceiling twinkled like the night sky. But, as awesome as the film, Casablanca, is, the best part was intermission! The beautifully restored organ rose up out of the ground and a gentleman played expertly and very enthusiastically for about 10 or 15 minutes, while the attendees were invited to come up and enjoy a lighted miniature Christmas town at the foot of the stage. There were trains whizzing through the town as the music filled the theater... It was magical! The Redford theater is a must see for anyone able to do so! They have a great lineup of movies and they will be having a live theatrical production of the musical, Shrek, the last weekend of April and first weekend of May, 2018. I would never have known about this theater if I had not been cast as princess Fiona! So excited to perform in such a historic and beautiful theater!!! read more

Love and support the Redford. Attended the showing of Planes Tranes and Automobiles on 11/7/20. WARNING NO POPCORN sold in concession area! Candy, Pop available but some genius decided not to include popcorn. Concession volunteers had masks, gloves and separate person handling money. Redford Theatre always had the best popcorn and we really look forward to it when attending a film here. Just FYI, the Farmington Civic, which is a classic old movie house sells popcorn w their movies. If I had known this in advance, I wouldn't bought tickets . Theatre should disclose the NO POPCORN because popcorn just goes with watching a movie, it's classic. read more

I've only been here once but I absolutely loved our experience. We took in a showing of Purple Rain on 33mm very soon after Prince passed away. The theater itself was great, all the staff we encountered was cool and the overall feeling of celebration of Prince was awesome to be in. I'd go back there for other films for sure. read more

I've only been here a couple times but each time I've seen a movie here, it's a throwback to a simpler time. This is how movie houses used to be. Thankfully the Redford is still around! My favorite part of the whole place is the organ. 30 minutes before the movie you get a great concert on the organ and then again at the intermission. The ceiling gives you the feeling that you are watching outside. Even cooler about this place is that it is all volunteer run. I love that each performance starts with the National Anthem on the organ. Great place, great experience, great environment. Give it a visit! read more

We both had a blast and the place was clean and everyone who worked there was really nice and accommodating.
