The goal was to try all of the good stuff. We had the grilled cheese, Fish & Chips, coney dog, onion rings and tatie tots. Big Moses and the Double Shift Burgers. We'd order it all again. The fried foods were crisp in the outside, tender in the inside. The burgers were big enough that we just ate half. The server was attentive, patient and kind. We were a little concerned about bringing a 2 year old and baby, but there was ample room in the bar for seating and the patrons were pleasant. We left before Trivia night began. Stopped into this dive bar on a Tuesday around 4 p.m., expecting cheap drinks and a laid-back vibe. The place was nearly empty, which wasn't surprising for the time, but what was surprising? Paying $7.50 for a draft Miller Lite and another $7.50 for a White Claw. For a dive bar? Absolutely ridiculous. I work in the industry, so I get the costs involved, but there's no world where a basic domestic beer and a canned seltzer should be priced like that. The woman who waited on us was such a sweet lady. It was our first time here, and she was patient with my questions. I had a medium rare burger with sautéed onions, mushrooms and cheddar cheese. Good bar burger, but too expensive in the long run. It's not that I wasn't decently impressed with it...it's just that, for a bar burger, fries, and a Diet cola, I believe that my out-the-door total (tax and good tip included) was $21, including tax and tip. That's asking a stinking *lot* for good, but pretty basic stuff, prepared well. It's not like I walked out waddling from having too much food, either. Look: the fact that they cook everything to order and do things like fresh grilled onions is very, very much in their favor. I was hungry, and that burger hit the spot on a day when I just needed to get some food in my stomach, and I was nearby and finally remembered to check them out. I'm not complaining about the quality of the food I was served, nor the way it was put together. But that total is just feel-it-in-your-britches high for a quickie lunch of a burger, fries, and non-alcoholic beverage. Plus, compared to the size of, say, a burger at Redcoat Tavern, this burger is significantly smaller in size. Still quite tasty, but probably 2/3 of the size. Now, Redcoat really isn't cheap, either, but the burger there is also of very good quality, and while I wouldn't be able to get fries with it there (I wouldn't need or want them...), the total would be less by a couple of bucks. The place itself is very drab, and walking in, it *feels* like it needs to be cleaned top-to-bottom in a very visceral way. There's evidence that they haven't done a real cleaning in that room for quite some time...visual evidence. Service functioned, but I sat at the bar and didn't require much at all. The dive-bar-ey-ness of the place doesn't bother me a bit, though...it's ultimately the too-high price of very standard food offerings that bring the rating down to "OK" status from "Good". While the food was quite tasty, the value isn't nearly so. I don't feel any legitimate need to return in the future. read more

Ordered carryout and was told it would take 30 minutes...it took an hour. The bartender was rude when I asked the simple question regarding when my food would be ready. I was leaving with my food and another patron, who also ordered carryout was walking back in with his order...he told me I should check my order because they got his wrong. I checked mine and they got it wrong too! I went in to get the order rectified and I was told that it was my mistake and that I received what was ordered. An awful experience coupled with a mediocre burger means I will never be back and will warn others every opportunity I have. Don't go...Sandy's by the Beech or The Burger Spot (depending on what direction you're coming from) are both far better options. read more

Food is okay, but service is slow and inattentive. Server brought us our food, and when we ordered other drinks they never came. The server never even checked on our orders to see if things were correct. I had to go to the bar to get something to drink (my burger had jalapenos on it) and when I asked for a water, the barkeep complained that she had nothing else to do. Clearly this location is understaffed. Perhaps the owners need to lend a hand to keep things in order. read more

Burgers are the main event here! Have one. Pile on your own onions and pickles from the condiment tray and pair with a good draft beer. This place is a dive, in the best sense. It has served as a watering hole and fill up station for local workers for a long time as evidenced by the memorabilia hanging on the walls. It is covered with photos of winning horses, sport team pennants, college posters, union signs, and a variety of other local brand ephemera - tons of automobile brand stuff. The crowd is super casual with people in for lunch, after work drinks, Ford employees meeting their families before heading down for a game, and locals. I would say the biggest contingent is folks who work nearby. Service is solid and casual. There is not a lot of formality. Ask for what you want. If they have it, you'll get it. My wife and I recently visited Mason's during a visit to the Detroit area from our home in the Philadelphia area. Having been local to the area in my earlier (much earlier) life, I knew of Mason's as it was a regular stop for my lunch or dinner 30+ years ago when I worked in Livonia. Imagine my excitement seeing that they were still there on this visit home. Now, you gotta understand, Mason's burgers literally set the benchmark in my young life of what I have looked for in a burger since those visits many years ago, and I've travelled the world trying burgers from all over, but after 30 years away it was so good to come home. I was afraid my memory of how good the burgers were was a false memory or some kind of nostalgia. It wasn't. As I was about to find out (again), they are that good. This bar hasn't changed much in the last 3 decades, and that's a good thing. It's a typical looking Detroit area dive bar, sports memorabilia and other nostalgia on the walls, several TV's playing all the sports you would want to see, a few die-hards hanging out early in the day getting ready for the Michigan game to start. We took a seat at a booth where we could see all the college football games that were on TV and ordered some yummy local beers on draft (good selection by the way!). For lunch, I ordered my old favorite, the Double Shift Burger. It was no less than glorious. 2 big patties cooked on a griddle to crispy outside, juicy inside perfection. A delicious bun (so, so many places miss the fact that if you make a great burger you have to put it on a good bun. This place gets it). Fresh veggies, condiments, and perfectly cooked fries on the side. This, ladies and gentlemen, was more than a burger, it was a religious experience. I will not miss a trip to Mason's in the future when I'm visiting the area. Do yourself a favor, loosen the belt a couple notches, and go enjoy. I'm jealous of those of you that can enjoy their burgers on the regular. This is not just the best burger in the Detroit area. Thanks to Yelp we stumbled upon Masons in a happy accident. The Mexican restaurant we planned to dine at had a 2 hour waitlist. Masons was close by and fellow Yelpers touted them as having one of the best bar burgers in the area so we were sold. The restaurant is small and spartan with some quirky wall decor and definite character. A few TVs allowed us to watch our beloved Tigers. We settled into a booth and scanned the menu even though we knew burgers would be our choice. The small menu focuses on classic bar food but quality is evident. For example, the Reuben features Detroit's Grobbels corned beef. The burger meat is a proprietary blend from Eastern Market and served on Browns sesame seed buns which are my all-time favorite. It's amazing how a bun can make or break a burger. The selection of beers on tap was excellent with 2 of my favorites: Cigar City Jai Alai and Brewdog Hazy Jane. My son settled on the Double Shift burger- a 2/3 cheese burger with crinkle cut fries for only $10.99. I had the 1/3 lb burger with Swiss and bacon (a delicious and generous addition for only $1). The burgers were cooked on a flattop griddle and unbelievably good- so flavorful and juicy. Definitely the best burger I've had in ages!! Our waitress was very sweet and attentive. By far the best burger you can get in Livonia. I've been going here with my father since I was 7 or 8 and I've never had a bad meal. The waitresses know our order as soon as we walk in. A Double shift with fried egg and bacon is a must. Hannah (the cook) does great work on the grill. We take family here all the time and always recommend it to others. The potato skins are delicious along with the fried mushrooms and just about everything else on the menu. I will definitely be coming back in the years to come. My sincerest apologies to the vegetarians, vegans and health fanatics of the world (my dietician in particular) , but I am a hamburger fan. I must confess that now. I like double burgers in particular especially hand formed patties cooked so that they are still juicy. Fries I can live without but man do I live for a burger. Heck I can even do without the bun if need be. Mason's is legendary. A dark and smoky bar with all junk local as decor (license plates, old street signs and the like). It really is not what I would call a homey atmosphere unless you grew up at a truck stop. This is definitely not a place to bring anyone who needs impressing, unless like me all they need to impress them is great burgers. The only things I have ever eaten in Mason's are burgers and sides of fries or O rings. I see other food in there and even hear tales of it being good, but I will always get a burger. Period. Once you taste one you will be hooked too. The best burger here is the Double Shift, two third of a pound patties with your melted choice of cheese- Swiss, Cheddar, American or Mozzarella for 5.65. It is served on an onion roll or plain bun with lettuce, tomato and mayo. You also get a dill pickle with it. You can add bacon or olives for extra but you really don't need them. Any other condiments you might need are in a little metal container they bring to you to doctor up your burger just as you like it. The burger itself is just perfect, too big of course but isn't that the beauty of it? The fries are extra and are your typical ridged affairs, hot and fresh but not the main attraction at any rate, single order is 1.95 or get the red basket for 3.95 and share with a friend or three for cheap. The O Rings are 2.75 and nice enough. This is not a heath food place, other items include fried fish on a plate or a bun, kielbasa, hot dogs, coneys, BLTs, sloppy joes, beefy chili, fried chicken bites and strips. You name unhealthy food and here it is. Their low cal option is chicken or tuna salad in a pita, somehow I am guessing they don't use non fat mayo though. This is no issue for me as I expect to eat unhealthy in a bar but I am giving you fair warning, there is no healthy option here and really did you expect there to be? If you are a petite eater they do have single burger option which my mother says is quite delicious but I just can't resist the double and I am not embarrassed about that a bit. I just eat better the rest of the week. Go on and try Mason's, splurge on the calories. In the Entertainment book there is a coupon for buy one get one free, so it will not be a splurge on the wallet at any rate. read more

Mason's cheeseburgers are exactly what a bar cheeseburger should be; Moist, fresh, and perfectly prepared. Be sure to go here if you are craving a burger. I also got their onion rings, which were crisp and very tasty. There is an internet jukebox, which accepts credit cards FYI. We tried Mason's about 7 years ago, when we first moved to the area, then never went back. We didn't have the burger then, so cut us some slack. Anywho, present day, I'm trolling through Yelp reviews (don't worry, I'm only semi-stalking you...) and this popped up. I was really craving a made-by-an-actual-person hamburger, so off we went. First off, the insides of this place are 100% local bar. And its dark. Like 'I had to turn my menu toward the TV to see it' dark. $4.90 for a burger, and the deep-fried side is extra? Seemed pricier than I remembered! But ooooh, it was sooooo good. We got the last order of mini tacos because they ran out of sour cream (I tried not to dwell on that last dusty tub of sour cream in the way back of the fridge). I ordered a single with american cheese and onion rings with ranch. Ken copied and got a burger, but with cheddar, and then ate half my rings (big enough order to share, and we got the smaller size). Nice little bar in Livonia. Big menu, standard bar food; we had a fabulous waitress. Unfortunately our experience was ruined a little by two EXTREMELY loud men at the bar. I've been to a bar or two, and I am by no means sensitive to noise, but they were seriously shouting at the top of their lungs the entire time we were there. Great stop for a bar burger. I love the fact that the burgers come with a "build your own" tray of onion and pickles as I love extra pickles on my burger but would never think to ask for them. I have noticed the tap beer selection has improved greatly in the last couple of years, so that earns the extra star in my book.
