I had an excellent 90 min deep tissue massage here by Yoshiko. I was able to call about 45 minutes in advance and book a massage when another place canceled on me last minute. The building is a hole in the wall. I walked right by it initially. You walk in the door, and then you walk upstairs. The room was a comfortable temperature. The massage table was ok. The face hole was to small for my face, so I had a lot of pressure on bony points. The massage itself was fantastic. Excellent pressure, and different technique than I've experienced before. However, I felt obligated to take the 5 minutes to log back in and clarify some things for those who are considering visiting this place... 1. The place wasn't exactly clean. The towels used were old. The oil used didn't smell fantastic. And I don't believe the A/C was working. 2. The women who massaged me must had been 90 years old. She was nice, didn't speak English well. The massage itself was.. inappropriate. Now, I've visited many placed for massage so I have a good grasp on what's supposed to go down. Let's put it this way, I've never had anyone actually move my junk to the side to massage my groin. Granted, she pushed it with the towel, not barehanded but... definitely inappropriate. Also, never had anyone run their hands down my crack and she spent way too much time massaging my butt. I was extremely uncomfortable and asked her twice to go back up to my neck area as I had previously pointed out.. in her defense, not sure she understood a word I said. 3. Don't drink the water. Looks refreshing but tasted like shit. Well, at least what I imagine shit would taste like anyway. We actually came an hour and a half early and they took us right in. The facility is cozy, clean, and quiet. Throughout the massage they made sure we were comfortable and communicated with us. You have to walk up a long flight of stairs to get to this place so my first impression wasn't a good one. We walked in and just wanted a foot massage. They sat us in recliners facing a wall, covered with sheets and put our feet in a metal bowl to soak. I still wasn't impressed. I didn't like the atmosphere. However, our massage therapists were really good. It started with a mini head massage then foot salt scrub and massage. It felt great. I also thought the price was too expensive. $35 for sea salt foot massage only. 30 minutes. You could go to happy head down the street and get an hour for that price. Although we won't be regular customers at this massage place since we live far and we just tried this after our dinner to pass the time, i can say we had a great massage. We did the 1 hour foot massage w/ sea salt scrub. I'm a critique with massages and for some reason i'm expecting to not have a great experience on this one, but i was wrong. Normally they would obsess on the knots in my shoulders but the way the masseuse kneaded my shoulders felt relaxing and the pressure was just right, then came the foot massage were i dozed off. We were greeted and welcomed, they served wine and tea at the spa. After flying into town and being a tourist for 1 day, my neck and shoulder were giving me major problems, so much so that it was difficult to enjoy my vacation any longer. I'm a regular for therapeutic and deep tissue massage due to chronic joint/muscle pain and see my own therapist at home in Texas about every 3 weeks. Additionally, I also see a chiropractor at least every 2 weeks. I researched spas in the area and read positive comments about Massage and Tea and decided this was the place for me (the fact that they state that all therapists are licensed with 3+ years experience also played a big factor in my decision, as well as that they are within walking distance of the Omni Hotel in the Gaslamp area). They also have an accurate (prices as advertised for example) and informative website as well. I am very pleased with my choice. They called and gave me an appointment within the same hour, and even texted me to let me know that they could get me in even earlier. Mie, the therapist, was interested in my health history and concerns. She paid extra attention to my shoulder and neck during the 60 min. deep tissue session, and let me know that I should speak up during the session if pressure was too much or if I experienced any problems. It was obvious by her confident muscle maneuvers that she had ample experience behind her belt. Afterwards, she even gave me tips on some exercises I could do to help alleviate discomfort even further and provided a receipt with her license number so I could attempt to have my medical insurance reimburse the cost. Really nice front desk manager and ladies were nice enough but the massages was not that great or memorable. Foot massage did not hit any sore spots, just a lot of leg rubbing ($29 for 30 mins). Deep tissue massage was with another masseuse and she was better but still did not do it for the shoulders. Her routine on the calves and feet were much better than the foot massage itself which says a lot about the unimpressive foot massage. The full body massage only worked on the back and did not flip over. The place is like any no-frills Chinese massage, clean enough and small but services were way too pricey (60 mins for $95 body massage). Also the name "Massage and Tea" does not serve any tea but ice water only, even though I requested room temperature water, they did not give any. I'm not a massage guy. Like, at all. In fact my previous massage experience ended about 38 minutes into a 90 minute session; i recall telling the poor gal to "Just get off me, please?" However. I'm also not a neck spasm guy, until two weeks ago. Since I'm 53 and I've never had one before, mine was THE WORST MUSCLE SPASM IN RECORDED HUMAN HISTORY. So I was open to my doc's suggestion of deep tissue massage. Josh at this oddly named neighborhood joint was available that same day. He gave me a very careful, thorough, and effective massage of the muscles in my upper neck and shoulders. And pain that prevented me from driving was gone. Simple as that. It's a little tricky to find on 4th Ave, between Market and Island (on the left relative to traffic flow) but once inside, I was in the care of professionals. They do a bunch of massage/facial/nails/etc stuff that are probably very popular with the hordes of bachelorettes thronging the Gaslamp, but my urgent, painful situation was solved quickly and affordably by Josh.
